Loving the new HBO series GIRLS. Makes me laugh long & loud.

I plan on doing all the characters as they have really fun styles! Today I picked Marnie's Twisted Updo from the Episode "All Adventurous Women Do"

Marnie is played by the beautiful Allison Williams. Her character is the most responsible of the bunch and she works as an art gallery assistant & lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn with Hannah (Lena Dunham).

Blow Dry Lounge

Hi ladies! How ya'll feeling today? I took a cardio dance class this AM with the biggest dance diva on the planet. There was even a live DJ! This is my new favorite class and it comes at a good time too because - and I cant believe I'm saying this - I'm getting a little tired of Zumba. I know, I know how can you get tired of Zumba? But I am. So to mix it up, I'm dancing like Britney Spears up in da club.

Yesterday I decided to try out a new Blow Dry Lounge which offers different types of blow outs & styling, braiding and updos. I went with a Basic Blowout and here are the results:

My stylist was really fast and well trained and the 'do

If you have a blow dry spot in your area I highly recommend a visit! Here's what I liked:

1. no cutting or coloring going on so the stylists just focus on styling

2. super high caliber hair dryers which cuts down on dry time

3. I was in and out in 30 minutes and the cost was $35. (If I hadn't worked out today I'm sure this blow out would easily last me another day or two)

4. this salon hired people who love to style hair so the staff seemed to be having fun and enjoying their work

Mini Mexico Break

Over the weekend I visited old & dear friends living in a small town in Northern Mexico. My family & I also plan to travel deeper into the Mexican interior this fall so I've been plugging away at my Spanish lessons. It's refreshing to work on a language less complicated then German!

These men are cutting up "Nopales" which are basically the pads of a prickly pear cactus. You peel the cactus to remove prickly spines and then boil or grill them

On Saturday we made fresh Nopalito salad (recipe here) which is delicious, hearty and refreshing. Add queso blanco on top for a little kick! Nopalitos taste a bit like zesty green beans.

my friend Vanessa is originally from Mexico City and is sometimes restless up North with the slower pace of life. But alas, she's enormorada (in love)

There's no shortage of pink and minty green buildings around Mexico & I fell in love with each and every one. I'm a sucker for brightly painted facades.

We had an inpromptu tequlia tasting - one with sweet agave nectar and maracuya ... yum

With all the spring sunshine my hair is lighter again and despite dying it "copper blond" it wants to be more of a traditional blonde. Oh well...

It was a lovely but brief trip and I look forward to further exploring Mexico over the years.

Los Angeles

My husband worked in Los Angeles last week so I joined him for a bit of fun. I adore LA! Here are snaps of my trip:

We stayed at The Standard Hotel on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood

The pool area was a great place to relax, take in the view & sip cocktails

we especially loved the Catalina Caipirinha: so refreshing!

Mr Berlin Hair Baby (can you believe homeboy is 46?)

Our room was modern, crisp & spacious with a balcony overlooking Sunset Strip

Mini bar featured a number of goodies including Vitamin C tablets (for the mornin' after) an interactive map of LA & of course lots o' liquor for when Lindsay Lohan stops by. LOL

we strolled Melrose & I loved the vibrant pinks of the Paul Smith boutique

I think what I love about LA most is the architecture.

Its an amazing mix of spanish colonial, art deco, mid century modern, storybook, craftsman .. you name it, toots!

Saturday we visited the breath taking Getty Museum set up in the hills. I especially enjoyed the Herb Ritts photography exhibit

For the weekend I did

hair: soft, loose curls with 1 1/2 inch curling iron

make up: black liquid eyeliner & false lashes

Before trips I love to read about where I'm going (fiction or truth) to set the stage.

Architectural walking tours & a juicy biography on Hollywood life in the mid 80s (think Guns & Roses, Hanoi Rocks, lots of teased hair & Jack Daniels!)

Welcome to Holland

These past few weeks have been difficult. My son was diagnosed with Autism and although it's not a surprise to his father and I, it still somehow feels final. Autism rates are skyrocketing and it's also common amongst low birth weight babies (you can read about my son's premature birth here)

It's hard for me to articulate everything I'm feeling. I'm all over the place! Angry, hopeful, isolated, focused, tired, determined, fragile. I'm reading everything I can get my hands on about Autism, meeting with a team of therapists, talking (and fighting) with my son's school to get him what he needs.

I'd like to share with you this very moving piece called "Welcome to Holland". I can relate to it perfectly - and I'm sure a number of you mothers and fathers out there can too. First published in 1987, it's an amazing peek at how it feels to parent a special needs child.

I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this......

When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland."

"Holland?!?" you say. "What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy."

But there's been a change in the flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay.

The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place.

So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.

It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.

But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned."

And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away... because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss.

But... if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things ... about Holland.

I've been kinda buggin' over my youtube channel lately. Worrying if people will like what I upload - how well it'll be received (or not). I think about the 16yr olds who watch my channel & wonder if they'll unsubscribe when I say something old lady-ish? Or if I look too much like their mom?

And then I saw Shirley Manson & Garbage in concert, hallelujah!

JC Penny!) has the cutest sundresses ever and all sorts of labels - from Liz Claiborne to Mango to Bisou Bisou and Jessica Howard. Seriously ladies: build a little time in your life for JC Penny, you will not be disappointed!

This sleeveless, belted shirtdress has a 1950's vintage feel and is extremely well structured for the $40 price tag. I'm considering picking up the black and white pattern for an engagement party I'm attending next month:

Spring Break

I'm single parenting through spring break (my husband is traveling for work) but happily my best friend & her daughter are visiting us from New York City, yipee!

Our week's been filled with sunshine, hot dogs, swimming, music, easter egg dying, giggles and ice cream...

Of course throw a few temper tantrums in the mix (sharing toys is so. very. hard. also there can be NO TALK of witches. Ever.) but overall, we've had a fabulous time.

and even a little window shopping as we try to keep an eye on the youngins

Eddy the Pug is on the scene, making us laugh and soaking up the rays. Eddy was in funk last week because Ayla the cat (whom you may recall from this post) very sadly disappeared. Ayla's owner has looked everywhere -she had tags on as well- but no luck.

Poor Ayla, say a little prayer for her safety.

There's something very special about a best friend you've known since the age of 12. I can tell Sarah everything. How could I not? She's seen me through my first heart break, college graduation, first job offer and motherhood.

I know that no matter what happens in my life, she will be there for me .. just like she has for the last 27 years.

Watching our children develop friendship bonds this week has been one of the greatest gifts in the world.

March Hair Care Favorites, Orchid Dress & Infinity Review

My favorites this month are Alterna Caviar Styling Tonic which I heard about from the Fabulous Sarah over at Hair Thursday and Tigi Rockaholic Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo

This styling tonic delivers professional, salon looking blow-drys and you only need a few sprays. It also has a built in heat protectant, score! Perfect for low maintenance women who dont want a lot of product or fuss.

This is the best dry shampoo I've come across. Its excellent post exercise or on 2nd/3rd day hair. It cleans the scalp and adds a bit of volume and texture.

my Outfit of the Night features a ruffled, orchid colored dress from forever 21

as you know I love dresses and the color of this one is to die for. It's light weight and not crazy long (as maxi's often are!)

Simple Pleasures

I present my favorite spring time simple pleasures:

Spotted on the Real Simple website...Iced Coffee is especially fabulous during spring & summer and I can make it in minutes using my martini shaker. Fill with coffee, ice, milk & sugar and shake! It actually blends really effectively.

Go to bed 20 minutes earlier

when I'm feeling run down, I force myself to go to bed 20 minutes earlier then normal for the entire week. It's really hard to stick to this as I'm a night owl and I love staying up late but I'm so thankful in the morning. I also keep my bedroom free of computers or televisions so the focus is on relaxation and sleeping.

Tapas for Dinner

ever since I visited Spain last year I fell in love with the idea of tapas. It cuts down on the amount of time spent preparing dinner & because they're small portions, you can (usually) get your child to try new things. Currently our favorite tapas combinations are:

hummus

baby carrots

figs wrapped with bacon (optional for vegetarians)

black olives

cantaloupe

whole grain pita chips

goat cheese

cucumbers

spicy cocktail meatballs

I also find that having these items on hand makes it super easy to pull out when guests come over unexpectedly. For more in depth tapas inspiration check out Tapena

Kohl Lined Eyes

The babysitter is arriving any minute and you're still not ready.

My advice: don't spend 30 minutes on eyeshadows & blending, simply take a black kohl eyeliner pencil and line your top and bottom lids for a edgy, dramatic look. Simple, Chic & done in 3 minutes!

One Gallery, Once a Month

this may sound forced for some of you, but the idea is to absorb yourself in something artistic, at least once a month. A few friends of mine have multimedia galleries so I'll pop over on a regular basis for inspiration and I make time for new exhibits or auctions. Many times instead of the 'dinner/movie' combo my husband and I will go to a gallery opening or event. It's a great way to meet people as well.

Mix Tapes (ok, actually cd's)

I just finished Chuck Klosterman's Sex, Drugs & Coco Puffs and he had me laughing out loud about the art of mix tapes:

"sequencing was very important. The strategy was to place specific "message" songs in between semimeaningless "rockin" songs; this would transfix, compliment and confuse the listener.. which was always sort of the goal"

While I no longer make artfully confusing mix tapes, I do love making them for myself - especially when I'm experiencing big changes in my life. The songs take on a bit of an epic role and become a soundtrack for what I'm going through. Perhaps it sounds a bit teenage drama .. but I love it. Now that I'm in the States I drive more often and enjoy popping in these mix cd's. All SOngs are linked!

Tutorial: Jennifer Lawrence inspired Hair (Hunger Games Red Carpet)

Jennifer wore a gorgeous, golden Prabal Gurung gown to the premiere

Back of the hair is a braided bun with a gold chain woven through.

Mine's a bit lower the Jennifer's and less bulky, however if you want a fuller bun, consider adding hair extensions.

Month Two in the USA, Already?

Hi ladies, I have a lot to tell you, but not a very organized brain today so this post may be a bit scattered. Bare with me.

Where to begin? I guess my first observation since the move is that time is passing too quickly. I feel like I just got here last week! I try to live in the moment, focus on the present etc etc but despite that, time is hurtling by. It's hard to imagine that we'll be back in Germany at the end of May for summer break. I'll blink my eyes and we'll be on a plane. This is especially magnified watching my son grow up. Dear time, please slow down.

My next observation is how powerful an open spirit and happy disposition can be during a time of change. If I decide to be positive and look at things in a positive light, it comes back to me ten fold. If I choose to see everything as stressful and negative then guess what? That's how my life will be! Of course "being happy" is easier said than done, but one concrete tip I have is to read 'The Happiness Project' by Gretchin Rubin. I've been reading it slowly over the past month and I love it.

Its an honest and insightful book about a woman's search for a more fulfilling and happy life. Gretchen is also hilarious and surprisingly methodical about her 'happiness project' so the cerebral part of me loved her approach - but she also peppers the book with wonderful literary and philosophical references.

Amen, amen, amen to the Yeats quote. Growth is essential to a fulfilled life. This past year my physical health has grown, I'm learning to garden, figuring out how to best parent my son, studying Spanish, and trying to accept criticism and laugh at my (many) mistakes.

My 11 year marriage has also grown. Communicating openly about a huge, transatlantic move wasn't always a cake walk, but I'm proud of the love and attention we offered each other through the process. When my husband and I work as a team, I feel like we can take on the world. I'm very lucky to have this wonderful person in my life.

So friends, life is good.

A New World

Oh, how I adore spring. Vines & branches are naked from winter one moment - and then slowly, tentatively, they grow their first leaves and from the leaves come blossoms...

It takes my breath away every year.

This spring is especially beautiful because for the first time in many years I have my own garden to tend and enjoy. The photos in this post are from my garden, girls!

Berlin meant many wonderful things to me, but I felt really out of touch with nature. Sure, we would go on walks and to parks - but being outside always took a "plan" - I couldn't just step out of my house and into my garden. I couldn't plant and grow, I would just observe.

So one big difference in my life post USA move is that I spend more time amongst trees, plants, flowers and vines and I adore every minute of it.

And for maximum fun, I put up a disco ball up in my garden

This photo is not from my garden - I took it at a community garden where I volunteer. I harvested about 10 lbs of camomile that day and I love the smell of this beautiful herb!

If you're looking to spice up dirty blonde or mousy brown locks for spring & summer I highly recommend considering a shade of Copper Blonde! This tutorial details the color and technique I use at home. I'm done in 30 minutes and the costs are minimal.

While viewing the red carpet madness, I realized that I've re-created 2 of the hairstyles before & want to share. Again!

The secrets to Angie's hairstyle are 1) a few long layers in the front - around the face - and 2) curling your hair with a hair straightener to create maximum shine, control & hold

Louise Roe

Louise's hairstyle is one of my go to favorites and I've done several different versions of it. The trick is to create enough volume on the side to give the chignon a full, bodacious effect. My tutorials show you how to do this WITHOUT hair extensions

My Dog's in Love with a Cat

This is a bittersweet story about a pug named Eddy and a cat named Ayla. Let it be a life metaphor - we can't always choose who we love, sometimes it just overpowers us.

Eddy is in love but there's a complication...

she's a cat.

yep.

Now clearly Eddy thumbs his nose up at society & says "I WILL LOVE WHO I WANT TO LOVE" but its not all LOL giggles...

he waits for her to visit & when she darts off unexpectedly (as cats do) he's crushed...

There are periods of distance between the two

as if they intrinsically understand their ill fated love.

but fun & playtime prevails

And at the end of the day I wonder if Eddy is thinking "If loving you is wrong, I don't want to be right.."

Tennis, Waxing & Buns

update: the waxing was fine! didn't hurt too much. I recommend going to a salon that specializes in waxing, rather then just a back room at a nail salon. warmer environment.

Okay so I suck at tennis. Really suck. Apparently I can dance, yoga, ride a bike, run, swim ... but hitting a ball over a net?

not really. not so much.

I recently started tennis lessons because the club I belong to hooked me in with a free lesson upon membership and then they doubled down by producing perhaps the hottest tennis instructor in the history of tennis instructors. Seriously, wtf? I already felt like a fool, now I have to live it out in front of a Ryan Reynolds look alike?

So anyway, I'm trying to navigate the crazy world that is tennis apparel and realized that no matter how I slice it, this homegirl needs a comprehensive wax. Those court lunges & leaps? Those tiny skirts?

Yep, it all kinda equals waxing...

Yesterday after Zumba class my mom & I stopped by an amazing boutique and I bought this funky, tribal style necklace. I have a weakness for statement jewelry and this piece does not disappoint..

I'm wearing it tonight for a double date dinner downtown then dancing. How's that for some D's!?
