Yesterday after Zumba class my mom & I stopped by an amazing boutique and I bought this funky, tribal style necklace. I have a weakness for statement jewelry and this piece does not disappoint..

I'm wearing it tonight for a double date dinner downtown then dancing. How's that for some D's!?

Yep!

Those of you who follow me over at Weightloss Wanda know that in August, I decided to dedicate myself to eating healthy and exercising. My initial goal was to lose 20 pounds but more importantly, to get in better physical shape. Well, I lost the 20 pounds by November (yay!) but the getting in shape goal is still a work in progress...

Exercising has become such a joy in my life. I love to sweat, tap into my "inner athlete" and push myself harder then I ever have before. Although the road trip & move were tough on my routines, I still managed to get exercise in most days - whether it was at the hotel gym, running outside or doing wacky fitness videos (Bess Motta anyone?) in my hotel room.

My life isn't all smooth sailing lately (my son still cries before school, I still miss Berlin) but exercise keeps me balanced and less bananas. This February, I'm excited to work out and MOVE as much as possible and I hope you'll join me in getting active...

What are you waiting for?!

Hello Dolly, I Heart You

One of the major highlights on our American road trip this month was staying at a Dolly Parton cabin in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

That's right folks: DOLLYWOOD!

Although the Dollywood amusement/theme park was closed for winter, we still had an AMAZING time at her cabin. I'm a huge Dolly Parton fan and believe she's the ultimate feminist and inspiration. This woman has economically revitalized one of the poorest areas in the United States: Eastern Tennessee. Dollywood has pumped a huge amount of jobs and money into a notoriously down trodden area. Not only was the cabin luxurious, it was also surrounded by the beautiful and dramatic Smoky Mountains.

Charlize Theron inspired Hair & Violet Eyes

I was inspired by Charlize's Golden Globe hairstyle and decided to re-create it last night for a Chinese New Year's Party that I attended. The party ended up being lots of fun (fireworks! foosball! chinese films projected on a wall!) and sure enough, I met some cool people and my spirits were lifted.

I wore a new Ralph Lauren dress that I got from Macy's & I love both the color and fit

Check out this same dress in "rich green" ... isn't that a phenomenal color?! It's officially on the wish list!

For my eyes I used a wet & wild palette called "Petal Pusher"

so far, I'm shocked at how pigmented the colors are and at $4.99 its so affordable!

I Bought a Ticket to the World, Now I've Come Back Again

Oh ladies. Ladies, ladies, ladies! I apologize for being away for so long. Closing up shop in Berlin was massive and then we embarked on a whirlwind tour through the USA visiting family and friends and now finally - we've arrived. We're here. Our new home in America.

And it's really hard. Super hard.

Everything is new! A new school for my son, new cultural oddities to deal with (why are supermarkets SO FREAKING HUGE? How do I choose a cereal AMONGST 100 DIFFERENT BOXES?!)New accounts to be set up - from banking to driver's licenses to fitness studios. And of course we have to find a house and buy a car.

I'm tired, overwhelmed and sad. I miss Berlin deeply and wonder if we made the right decision. I'm pretending to everyone that "it's great to be here!" but the reality is that I'm scared.

Get Ready with Me! New Years Eve Hair & Make-Up

I hope y'all had a lovely time ring-a-ding dinging in the New Year! I'm very excited about 2012 and a new chapter in my life!

Here's a 'Get Ready with Me' video I filmed yesterday in Hamburg -but had problems uploading it- so it comes a day tardy. I'm quite a chatterbox as the video is 20 minutes long, however in my defense I tried to go into detail about products and youtube channels I'm loving

My product of the year (drum roll please..) goes to Dior DiorShow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum Seriously, you will never need fake lashes again. I'm in love and I'm shoutin' from the roof tops!

We celebrated with family last night & at midnight set off fireworks in our front yard ... quite a spectacle!

I ended up going with my standard black cocktail dress for the evening paired with a blue wooden necklace from Diwali that I bought in Paris this fall. Diwali has fabulous, colorful and affordable jewelry.

Most of the NYE activity took place in the family den playing Kinect Darts - a motion sensor game that's super fun. I actually made it to the play off round but then completely crumbled under pressure and my niece kicked my butt!

I forgot about my diet for the evening and indulged in champagne, chips & salty snacks. It was heaven! Having said that though - its time for me to go swimming :)

Swim off a bit of the excess, clear my head and get mentally ready for our flight to New York tomorrow.

My Current Hair Care Routine & Must Have Products

Hair problems/issues: prone to severe dryness (especially because I color it), frizziness, major "S" shaped waves in the back but then poker straight in the front. In addition, it's rather thick & pouffy so I need to thin it out a bit every few months.

Here's a list of my current favorite products that help keep my hair in order and looking decent without any styling routines such as blow drying curling or straightening.

1. Phytonectar Shampoo:
Large bottle is $19 on Amazon and $24 at Sephora. Super concentrated, you only need a little bit! Concentrate on roots and hair ends and do not expect a big lather.

2. Tigi Color Goddess Shampoo:
This is a color protective shampoo made especially for brunettes and red heads. It does a good job at bringing out and preserving color but isn't that moisturizing.

3. Rene Furterer Karite Shampoo

Shampoo for dry hair and scalp however I don't love their accompanying Karite conditioner. Currently looking for a new conditioner. RECOMMENDATIONS WELCOME! In the past I've used Fekkai's Protein Conditioner and may go back to that.

4. Nuxe Mulitpurpose Oil
You've heard about this ad nauseum ... its a great hair oil!

5. Gliss Kur Leave in Conditioner Spray
Drugstore de-tangler with lots of vitamins to strengthen your hair. Do not rinse out. What I'm gonna do without Gliss Kur in the United States?!

6. Gliss Kur Daily Oil Elixor
this adds lovely shine & conditions hair ends.

NOTE: do not put these oils (numbers 4-6) directly onto your roots & scalp. Work it into hair ends and middle of hair. Always do so on partially dried hair so you can tell if you're overdoing the amount. If you overdo the amount hair will look oily.

bike repair shop which also sells handmade cycles from Patria. Owner Shaun Paul Simmons is an American who speaks excellent German and is amazingly talented with bikes. In the summer this is a fun hang out spot for cycle enthusiasts.

delicious food & drink mainly from Luxembourg. The best coffee to be found in Berlin! Also delightful quiches, cheeses, wines & salads. I often met my husband here for lunch as its right near his office.

Bonita Perla Jewelry WorkshopUnfortunately my camera battery died as we began to film in front of Bonita Perla - but it's right next door to the flower store. Here you can hand make your own necklaces, earrings and bracelets. The owner Melanie is lovely, helpful, creative & so kind! A college friend is arriving from Los Angeles tomorrow and I'm taking him straight to the cabaret. Berlin is famous for its cabarets and there's one to suit every taste - ranging from classic to nostalgic to underground. While looking through my closet for something to wear, I settled on my faux leather jacket, leggings & platforms. Perhaps not the most exciting, true, but then I decided on a Debbie Harry inspired make-up look:

A traditional smoky eye ... on cocaine!

Here's my amateur break-down:

1. Lots of color concentration in the crease

2. Work the hell out of lower lid line. Line it and smoke it.

3. Demi lashes on the outer corner for a slight cat eye.

4. Nude lips.

5. Lots of blush contour. Lots.

My preferred tools of the trade:

Bobby Brown Pencil in Black! You're gonna laugh - but seriously, I bought this pencil at Fred Segal in Santa Monica in 2004. NOT KIDDING! I STILL HAVE IT AND USE IT! Sure, its been sharpened down A LOT and is quite small, but its still amazeballs. Also love the smudge tip, perfect for my Debbie Harry look!

New Hair Cut: Face Framing Layers

While packing boxes last weekend I came across this photo of me, my sister Chaz & Grams. This photo was taken in my late 20's, so about 10 years ago. My grandmother influenced me more than anyone else on earth and I treasure this photo. She died a few years ago and I miss her so much!

Loving Grandma's python print bow tie blouse! Also I've got about $20K in gold coins around my wrist as Grams let me raid her jewelry box for the photo shoot. Like my bitten down nails? OLD HABITS DIE HARD!

This photo also made me realize that I wanted layers again so my friend (who's a wonderful hair stylist) came over and SNIP SNIP SNIP...

VOILA: Face framing layers! I like how they lift & soften my face a bit. Plus its really fun to style layers.

DIY Beauty: Treat Puffy Eyes with Green Tea Ice Cubes

If I eat & sleep well then I can keep my eye puffiness somewhat under control ... but if I'm short on sleep/late night out/eating salty foods the BLAM BOOM KERPOW!

As you can see, the Green Tea ice cubes helped tremendously. The tea only costs a few Euros, the smell is divine and the application takes a few minutes.(Please note I put foundation on before the second photo so my skin tone is more even as well..)

1. brew up some strong green tea

2. pour tea into ice cube tray

3. freeze overnight

4. wrap 1 cube in gauze, press on your under eye and eyelid for a few minutes ... until you see reduction of swelling.

One Trick Pony

When I enter a clothing store, its like I suddenly have 10 red carpet premiere parties I think I need to shop for. I gravitate to shiny, sparkly, special. Always. When I lived in DC I recall my friend Shalini telling me my closet was filled with "one trick ponies". What she meant were clothing items that did one trick and that was it. She dragged me to J.Crew to get neutral/beige colored sweaters that I could "pair with anything!" or sturdy black cords and "basics". Poor Shalini. She tried, she really did.

Goodbye Berlin

Hi ladies! I apologize posting has been so light lately but I do have a good excuse. In case you missed it, I'm moving back to the United States after a wonderful stint in Berlin! This is my informal "Goodbye" video, so check it out if you want to hear more:

There's so much to do! Packing, saying goodbye to friends, wrapping up work stuff, getting visas in order, finding a

place in the States etc etc. As mentioned in my video, I'm not sharing exactly where we're going because my family is very private. Also the town is A LOT smaller then Berlin and hence less anonymous.

But this is just goodbye Berlin. Its definitely not goodbye to YouTube or this blog. Berlin Hair Baby has been a delightful creative outlet for me and I plan on keeping her around for a while. So that's the news, folks! Wish me luck in this new adventure. I'm really excited for what lies ahead and to take you all with me...

A Trip Playmobil Land

Last weekend we took a trip to Nürnberg to visit Playmobil land, my son's current obsession. The fall foliage was gorgeous and we lucked out with clear, sunny weather.

I highly recommend a visit with your children. The park concentrates on active, outdoor play where children can use their imaginations becoming pirates, knights, sailors, princesses, cowboys & cowgirls.

The playmobil figures have helped my son a lot with role playing, language and story telling.

Paddling around the lake in these rafts was so fun and also challenging balance wise

We rented a holiday apartment at Ring Hotel Reubel which was lovely and only 10 minutes from the park.

Often when we travel/go on vacation I'm a huge fan of renting apartments or houses. You have so much extra space, can cook your own meals, have friends come visit and don't need maid services everyday! I'll never forget accompanying my husband on a work trip to Washington, DC and staying at The Ritz. Although its a beautiful hotel, it was wildly impractical with a small child!

MAC Glitter & Ice Holiday Collection 2011

Last night I joined Coci (who has a fabulous YouTube channel here) at the premiere of MAC's new holiday line Glitter & Ice. The principal face of this collection is American ice skater *Johnny Weir:

As we walked into the store I was thrilled to see Johnny's look re-created by Berlin based model Marco (total sweetie BTW & absolutely no attitude)

(isn't Marco conjuring Jordan Catalano w/ those eyes?!)

The MAC photographer who snapped this was teasing me about "showing more teeth" so I'm on the brink of laughter here. She also gave me tips on finding "my best pose". Needless to say after a few glasses of prosecco I was practicing poses all over the store...

MAC's Glitter and Ice 2011 Holiday Collection

My favorite product in the collection was "Shimmermint"(the pale green metallic eyeshadow on bottom left). It's a gorgeous color & ya'll know my current obsession with all shades of green.

That said though, the Glitter & Ice collection didn't really speak to me. I think its because I'm not into shimmery+glittery looks at the moment. Too much shimmer ages me and creeps into my wrinkles and just feels a bit too "showtime!"

Many of these colors however would look great on younger skin and especially fabulous on darker skin tones - for example the Silver Skate eyeliner and Whirls & Twirls lipstick: a glaze finish pink with pearl tones.

My Trip to Paris ....

I've been to Paris seven times and every visit I fall in love all over again. It's an easy 1.5 hour flight from Berlin and the Paris Metro gets you from Charles De Gaulle airport to the city center in 45 minutes and costs only 9 euros. Niceties aside, Paris can be an over-priced tourist trap. I'm a firm believer in knowing where to go and doing a bit of research first. The key is to choose restaurants and clubs that are hot and innovative, yet still a bit under the radar. Luckily my friend Jennifer selected wonderful restaurants while Sarah and I weighed in on cafes, salons and shopping!

Hotel Therese

A lovely & chic boutique hotel in the 1st arrondissement

Les Bistronomes

Outrageously good food in a gorgeous, intimate setting. Fantastic staff.

No Collection

A French label that embodies feminine & sophisticated clothing. Sarah and Jenny bought the place out!

Prescription Cocktail Club
A speakeasy bar that's difficult to find (I know, insert eye rolling here) but their cocktails are so incredibly well made that you'll be pinching yourself to make sure its all real...

Le Magnifique

When we walked into Le M a trail of stardust followed us. It's magic! Though sadly my video doesn't do it justice. You must dance the night away here. MUST. The door policy can be kinda tricky+tough so dress your best & be fierce.

This salon has a delightful concept called "bar du chignon" where you can book a chignon (updo)in 10, 20 or 40 minute increments. I told my stylist Kevin "brigit bardot circa 1960's" and 20 minutes later, voila!

The best part of the trip though was being with my two fabulous, smart, funny and adventurous girlfriends! My heart sings when we're together and this trio is living proof that life actually begins at thirty eight.

I love observing iridescent beetles because their colors change depending on the angle you look at them...
