HDTVs have become very popular very quickly, and with the switchover from analogue to digital by broadcasters very shortly, the need for a digital television is not one based purely on aesthetics. Certainly there us a great deal to be said as far as design is concerned for having a smart flat panel mounted on the wall in the living room, and it takes up a great deal less space as well. But there is more to simply choosing the size colour of the frame of your new HDTV, and some of the options can be a little confusing to the unwary and those still reeling from the shock of seeing television in colour.

The first thing is that not all HDTVs are built equally. There are different levels of quality, and different ways of formatting the picture. These differences are too technical to be included in this article, but if you are in the market to buy a new HDTV it would be well worth your while purchasing a magazine that can give you reviews and advice on current models, or doing a little more research online.

One of the most obvious choices that you will need to make is whether to go for a traditional looking direct view or tube television, or a flat panel. The advantage of direct view is that they are usually much cheaper. They also offer better contrast of colour with darker shades (in other words black looks blacker) and the viewing angle is much greater. This means that in a living room it will make no difference where you sit, whereas with some flat panel televisions if you sit anywhere other than directly in front of it you tend to get a loss of detail, loss of colour and eventually loss of the picture entirely.

Make sure you are aware of the difference between flat panel and flat screen televisions – because they are not one and the same thing. All too often people tend to use the terms interchangeably, but they are quite different. Flat screen televisions are simply standard televisions with a large tube, but instead of the base of the tube (the screen) being convex (curved), it is completely flat. This gives a sharper and less distorted picture. Flat panel televisions on the other hand are the very narrow type which can be mounted on the wall and take up very little depth at all. The screens are also flat, but unlike the tube sets, there is almost no depth to the television itself.

Another thing to look for is the choice of flat panel HDTVs between LCD and Plasma. The LCD televisions will be very much cheaper, but offer a very narrow viewing angle. Plasma television sets have a wider viewing angle, which suits more homes that have wide living rooms rather than narrow ones. The problem with Plasma televisions though is that they are prone to ‘image burn’/. This is where an image, if displayed on the screen constantly for an extended period of time, it can become burned onto the screen so that it is still partially visible at all times. This can cause unwanted ghosting and deterioration of the picture. This is more likely if the screen is used to play video games, as many games have portions of the screen where buttons, options and menus sit that are always visible and can end up being displayed for hours at a time.

Sometimes the manufacturer will advertise a 10,000 or 15,000 ratio that really refers to the dynamic contrast ratio of the TVs, which is different. This is something to look out for when searching for a LCD HD because with a LCD television the contrast ratio tends to be on the low side. The dynamic ratio only reflects the amount of dark and bright luminosity that the television produces over a period of time.

Next, consider selecting from HDTVs with standard definition. Most people still watch many forms of media that are not made for high definition TV, so this is an important feature to have. Although HDTVs can display standard definition from DVDs, VHS, and satellite and cable, the picture quality is not up to par. Televisions that are designed to play standard definition are a better investment.

The video processor is also important. The computer inside the LCD HDTV is the brain behind high definition television – it processes the high definition TV signals coming into the set and displays them on the screen. If this part of the system is not up to scratch, the picture quality will suffer, no matter how good the other specifications are. A cheap HDTV processor leads to a disappointing experience. HD televisions are meant to be high quality. The easiest way to research processors is to read reviews on High Definition televisions and find out what the experts say about picture quality for each system you are considering. Whether purchasing a LCD, or any of the other HD TVs available, research is key.

I purchased this Samsung LN46A650 LCD TV some time after it was available at Amazon and it is everything I have really expected. I spent more than a year and a half researching flat panel TVs. I came close to buying a Samsung 71F series, but then I decided to hold and do more even more research on those models. I was almost about to purchase the 5 series, but when I found out that it doesn’t actually have 120hz refresher rate, I decided that I better research the 6 series and ended buying Samsung LN46A650 LCD TV.

As you have probably read outside of the several hundred dollar premium for the Sony brand, the main difference is that the Samsungs specially have a shiny screen so in high light rooms there can be some reflection compared to the matte XBR screens. I bought this Pointy Aquos LC42D65U 42 Inch 1080p LCD HDTV 2 weeks before Yuletide , on a VERY strict budget. ( My wife’s cash ) I’m employed In the AV industry, ( commercial design and installation ) and I was beat, of working with stuff, that was far out of my budget. I have worked with the 52″ version before, and It actually looked great. The picture on the Pointy Aquos LC42D65U 42″ is very sharp. buy lcd hdtv

The Inputs, are absolutely adequate. Even including RS232 and USB port for firmware updates. HDMI’s out the wazoo. All the inputs are located in extraordinarily accessible places. Including the Television’s control buttons on the right side of the bezel. The “picture frame” bezel, rocks! I really **** looking at a wide, glossy, distracting bezel, that is common on flat-panals. This one, is thin with hard lines. Very professional looking. Why not have a great looking TV to match the quality of the picture on it?

Anyway, I was often anxious that most other Aquos models were 120Hz. Blu-Ray and Gaming, were the concern’s in my final call on what to buy. The standard for Blu-Ray is 1080p/24Hz. Your Totally Covered! Killer refresh rate! Great performance! Especially when used with a Aquos Blu-Ray player. Oh, yea did I bring up the mix, not only works together ( thru “Aquos Link” ), but is also one of the least expensive 1080p $975.00 Blu-Ray $200.00 combo’s. I got what I wanted, without having to “settle”. The absence of the fifth star on my review, was for the sound. Kinda stinks. Although, not so bad I would not suggest this to anybody. MOSTLY, all flat panel speakers pong. I adore this Pointy Aquos LC42D65U Television regardless. I wold endorse it to anyone.

The technology for dvd players has been around long enough now that it has matured and most dvd players on the market these days can be considered quality units with solid, useful features.
