Expensive books catch watchful eyes of Karlo

Davao Majority leader and house assistant Davao City congressman Karlo B. Nograles has appealed to the country's especially in Davao colleges and universities not to aggravate the burdens of parents whose children are barely coping with the spiraling cost of tertiary and secondary education by prescribing scandalously expensive textbooks.

"We have seen the green light given to educational institutions to increase tuition fees. Now, schools are compelling students to use books priced way beyond their parents' means. This is completely unacceptable," Congressman Nograles lamented.

The lawmaker said he continues to receive reports that schools are requiring the use of textbooks that are priced to the ceiling.

"I received reports that some books being required in a psychology subject in one school are priced at P10,000 each. Can you imagine the financial trauma that parents undergo if students would need two or three books within that price range?" Nograles surmised.
The lawmaker could not help but suspect the possibility of some sort of collusion between the institutions and book suppliers for reasons other than public service.

"I am confident that private higher education institutions look into the matter and review their respective programs/curriculum and explore alternatives that could help unburden parents," Nograles said.
He also asked the Commission on Higher Education to look into the matter.

"I am confident alternatives (to high-priced books) can be found," Nograles said, stressing that using books beyond the reach of the masses is hurting government's human development programs.

This place is very beautiful, peaceful and relaxing to stay with a lot of businesses and establishments are investing here inside and outside the cities in Davao. It only means of a lot of places, destinations, hub, parties to perfectly choices to go. Was it not a fun? Of course it is.

Indeed..!Friendly people, beautiful sites, a lot of malls, People’s park and even the San Pedro church are the most well known places here in Davao not to mention the famous durian and bananas. Most improved industries, condominium, Malls, Hotels and resort as well beaches nearby the cities. A lot fun exciting activities that will be celebrated and surely enjoyed by all Davaoenos and other foreign people to visit and have fun in Davao.

The most significant dates in the Philippine’s history "Independence Day"

The Philippine’s Independence day is a large celebratory event held across the country on June 12 each year. Independence Day is a day when many people, including government officials, employees, and students, participate in nationwide parades. However, the main highlight is the police and military parade in Manila headed by the country’s incumbent president, followed by a speech and a 21-gun salute. Many Filipinos spend the day in parks and malls. Many Filipino communities in other countries also observe the nation’s Independence Day celebrations.

In the Philippines, Independence Day (Filipino: Araw ng Kalayaan) is an annual national holiday observed on June 12, commemorating the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain on June 12, 1898. It is the National Day of the Philippines.
The declaration of Philippine independence from the colonial rule of Spain concluded the Philippine Revolution. Philippine independence, however, was not recognized either by the United States or by Spain. The Spanish government later ceded the Philippine archipelago to the United States in the 1898 Treaty of Paris, and the United States granted independence to the Republic of the Philippines on July 4, 1946 in the Treaty of Manila.

The flag is seen in various places across towns and cities in the Philippines during the country’s Independence Day. Many cars, tricycles, door houses also sport miniature flags on this day.
The Philippine’s Independence Day is a national holiday so government offices are closed. There are absolutely no classes in all schools. Many business establishments are closed except shopping centers. Public transport such as buses, passenger jeeps, and tricycles still operate but their routes may be limited due to the closure of streets used for parades.
The Flag of the Republic of the Philippines, representing the country is symbolized by the following:
   * Royal blue field – peace, truth, and justice.
    *Scarlet red field – patriotism and valor.
    *White triangle – equality and brotherhood.
    Three stars on the corners of the triangle – the three main geographical regions of the country namely Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao.    The sun at the center of the triangle – has eight rays representing the eight Philippine provinces that started the revolt against Spain.

Work Rule

Working beyond eight hours on June 12 would mean an additional payment of 30% of one’s holiday rate for every additional hour. See the complete list of DOLE holiday pay guidelines here. If employees who have Tuesdays as their rest day come to work on Independence Day, they will get plus 30% of their regular holiday rate.
As mentioned in DOLE’s Handbook on Worker’s Statutory Monetary Benefits (released in 2010), an employee is entitled to a holiday premium only when “he/she is present or is on leave of absence with pay on the work day immediately preceding the holiday.”

The world is so big especially in my city of Davao. All human beings here have three lives: public, private, and secret. When a private talk over a bottle of wine is broadcast on the radio, what can it mean but that the world is turning into a concentration camp?

From Wikipedia: When something is private to a person, it usually means there is something within them that is considered inherently special or personally sensitive. The degree to which private information is exposed therefore depends on how the public will receive this information, which differs between places and over time. Privacy partially intersects security, including for instance the concepts of appropriate use, as well as protection, of information. Privacy may also take the form of bodily integrity.

Lesson learned:

You want something to be in private? Live in a bottle where no one can see you, no one can talk to you. That is completely private. If you don’t want somebody to know your secret, then don’t talk about it to somebody since it might be the start of any conversation in the future.

Pacquiao -- who has won titles in eight weight classes and boasts a record of 54-3 with two draws and 38 knockouts -- has said his preparations for his last Marquez fight were hampered by marital strife, a thing of the past now that he has re-dedicated himself to God and spends his time in Bible study rather than gambling, drinking and womanizing.

"They're as happy as can be," trainer Freddie Roach said Thursday of Pacquiao and his wife, Jinkee. "He's in a much better place than he was before his last fight."

While promoter Bob Arum has characterized Pacquiao's life as "careening off the rails" prior to his spiritual re-awakening, Roach seemed to think things weren't that bad.

"He just got caught up in the limelight a little bit," Roach said. "He took a step back and looked at his life and didn't like it -- and he changed."
Roach said the change has carried over into the gym, but Bradley sounded a skeptical note this week.

"He's here, he's there, he's fornicating and now he's got his religion in place," Bradley said. "I don't have to throw religion in people's face."
Whatever the truth of Pacquiao's spiritual quest and its impact on his physical abilities, Bradley's trainer, Joel Diaz, said Saturday's fight will come down to ring skills, pure and simple.

Diaz said that's what will give his fighter a chance in what Bradley has acknowledged is the biggest bout of his life.

One-dimensional vs quickness?

"Manny is a one-dimensional fighter," Diaz claimed. "He unloads a lot of punches, but he's reckless.

"He doesn't focus on his defense. You can counter-punch him all night long. And Timothy's a brawler who can move his feet and be smart enough to make any changes he needs to in there."

Roach said Bradley isn't a slick counter-puncher and won't be able to match Pacquiao's quickness.

Manny Pakyaw lost his game this year 2012 for Split Decision from Timothy Bradley. Even my self i wasn't able to believe it or not? I just expecting a good result since Manny Pacquiao try his best and i know he is stronger than over fight before, more trainings and a humble guy. Might be His best was not good enough or "Bias Game" over the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.

Timothy Bradley shocks the world by grinding out a split decision victory over pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao last night (Sat., June 9, 2012) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pacquiao was dominant early, landing punches in bunches and staggering Bradley with his superior speed and power. But "Desert Storm" persevered and once he caught his second wind late, he came back to win the later rounds and, ultimately, the fight. Fans are already decrying the decision and declaring the fix is in but you can judge for yourself, Maniacs. Upset? For a more detailed breakdown of the Pacquiao vs. Bradley fight.

In a bizarre ending to a largely one-sided fight, Timothy Bradley upset Manny Pacquiao, winning an extremely questionable split decision victory with scores of 115-113, 113-115, and 115-113.

The story of this fight is undoubtedly going to be the decision. Over the course of 12 rounds, Pacquiao consistently looked like the better fight. He landed more shots on Bradley, connected with a higher percentage, and seemed to wobble Bradley on a few occasions. It wasn't a particularly close fight, with Pacquiao seeming to be the clear winner. And yet, at the end of the day, Bradley walks away with the decision. It's very hard to justify that result, and will surely add a lot more to the argument that boxing is inherently broken at this point.

What ever happens for the fight today all Pinoy all over the world say's that you are the winner. Here in Davao City really upset the result. Sbarro Opens at Abreeza Mall Davao @ June 1, 2012

After Sbarro opened its first branch in Davao at SM City in Ecoland last March 16 in time for Araw ng Dabaw, we have been waiting for it to open a second branch in Abreeza Mall which is actually more convenient for us.

When I asked a staff of Sbarro SM Davao last month when it will open in Abreeza, he said it will be on May 25. Right After we passed by that day though they were still closed. A friend said they will open in June yet. So we were surprised to find out today June 1, and then when we wandered on the restaurant row at the second floor of Abreeza looking for a restaurant so our minds think “where we could eat lunch, I saw it was already open! Yes Indeed! As part of it we don’t time go to SM anymore to purchase if the little boy requests to eat pizza, aside from Yellow Cab, We have another new choice if we like to eat pizza and pasta plus they also serve a few healthy salad choices. Yellow Cab is very fame for the past years in Davao city so it’s exciting to have a new taste and new ambiance so I keep wandering “Why many people just dropping by and get dine in Sm even though that day is inside the Store of Sm Sbarro superb heat while enjoying eating their pizza’s and pasta. I really Love the taste as I love someone in life. Whee! Well Good thing it is a little more spacious at the Sbarro Abreeza branch.

Service is good and hope they keep it up especially in making quality of the food they serve consistently delizioso and grandioso meaning delicious and big servings all the time! So I went their in Sbarro Abrezza for Dine If you’d like to ask me if the food was good. It is for those who love pasta and pizza at Sbarro. I have learned though after going on food trips for the past few years, in the end it is always to each own. People have different tastes.We like the food and service has been good. We were basically trying out those dishes that I have not tried at Sbarro SM Davao. I think we visited it thrice only mostly when it was still newly opened in March.

Based on our experience, service is better in Sbarro Abreeza.

Maybe one factor was that there were really more people during the days following the opening day at their SM Davao branch since it was also the first in Davao and there were more people then who wanted to try out their food now available in Davao. But I am not saying that there were not many people at Sbarro Abreeza. During the weekend when they opened in Abreeza, they were also full and some people had to wait. It really did help that the space was bigger especially near the counter. At their SM branch it was a common feedback then that it was really cramped during their first few days and it was really hard to move based on our experience when there are people lining up to order and those who want to pass going in could hardly do so and if you are seated at a table near the counter, well you’d really cannot ignore the people passing by as you eat, others bumping you with their bags as they pass by.

Good thing it is a little more spacious at the Sbarro Abreeza branch. Service is good and hope they keep it up especially in making quality of the food they serve consistently delizioso and grandioso meaning delicious and big servings all the time!

Just Visit Sbarro Abrezza or Sm City Davao for a good taste of Pizza’z.

Davao City Achieve to wins 3rd Red Orchid Award

DavaoCity added another feather to speak, after it bagged its 3rd Red Orchid Award in Manila.

The Orchid award, annually bestowed by the Department of the Health to Local Government Units, Centers for Health Development, Government Hospitals and Government Offices for advocating 100% Tobacco-free environments, placed in Davao City to its Hall of Fame.

Mayor Sara Duterte from Davao City received the award together with members of the Davao City Anti-Smoking Task Force, led by Dr. Domilyn Villarreiz.

Aside from trophies and certificates, the Hall of Fame awardees received a P500,000 project grant to sustain their tobacco control activities in the city of Davao.

Davao City has been in the forefront of the smoke-free campaign since it enacted its Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance in 2002,It was considered as the first exhaustive anti-smoking law in the countryof the Philippines, well ahead of the 2003 Tobacco Regulation Act Bill.

This is lead to the creation of the DavaoCity Anti-Smoking Task Force, responsible for monitoring ,organizing ,compliance and strict implementation of the local anti-smoking ordinance,to conduct advocacy campaigns and support the Davao City Police Office in filing charges for those violations.

“I would like to congratulate the city’s anti-smoking task force for their successful implementation of the 2002 Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance. This has inspired to other cities to follow suit and has brought us citations from national and international organizations, including the Red Orchid Award which was conferred to the city by the Department of Health for the past three years as a 100% Tobacco-Free Government Unit,” Mayor Sara Duterte said.

“We are humbled and grateful in sharing our success and challenges to the world as we reaffirm our full commitment in promoting healthier and longer lives by keeping Davao City smoke-free after being accorded with our third Red Orchid Award,” the mayor added.

The winners of this years Red Orchid Award were chosen on the strength of their comprehensive efforts to implement a 100% Tobacco-Free Environment following the World Health Organization’s “MPOWER” initiative. Several validation teams were formed and visited the nominees between March and April. The members of the teams came from the DOH, Civil Service Commission, Philippine Ambulatory Pediatric Association, Inc. and the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance Philippines. Remove Ambulant Vendors near School in Davao

City Hall told to remove ambulant vendors near Schools

The Davao City Council has ordered the City Hall to remove all ambulant vendors along Magallanes Street near Magallanes Elementary School (MES) that are causing obstruction to pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
Davao City Councilor Pilar Braga, chair of the City Council committee on energy, transportation, and communication during her privilege speech in Tuesday’s regular session, said the mushrooming of vendors are putting the lives of school children and the public in general at risk as they are the ones occupying the sidewalks while pedestrians, children among them, have to walk on the road.

With this, the council has passed on first reading, a resolution mandating the City Hall, particularly the City Administrator Office to remove these ambulant vendors in areas mentioned by Braga.
“The vendors have appropriated the narrow sidewalk, thus, pedestrians, adults and school children alike can’t walk through the sidewalk but instead they have to walk or pass through the street,” Braga said in her speech.
Braga said a similar situation is also happening along Paciano Bangoy Street, formerly called as Ponciano Street near the Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Elementary School, which for her, is also detrimental to the public especially children.

“The areas are busy streets with all kinds of vehicles passing through. This condition poses hazard and danger to the lives of our pedestrians especially school children. The vendors, therefore, appropriating the sidewalk should be removed,” she said.
Braga also said pedestrian lanes across the city, especially those in front of schools must be repainted.

Davao next stop BPO Hub

Davao can become country's biggest BPO hub

THE Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry in Davao City has a high demand for additional talents to expand its workforce, needing around 3,000 to 4,000 call center agents in the next two months.

Bert Barriga, vice president for the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Davao, speaking at the weekly Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City, said there's a big possibility that they can surpass their target of generating 30,000 workers by 2015.

Davao City has over 14,000 workforce for the existing BPO industry, but the demand increases with the coming of additional areas of service such as health, agriculture, finance and accounting and creative designs.

Barriga said three multinational companies are putting up business in Davao within this year, two of which will be setting up their facilities at the SM City Davao and the other one is at the Abreeza Ayala Malls.

"Two of those companies are among the biggest in the world," Barriga said.

These companies will initially employ around 2,000 talents, he added.

For the BPO industry in Davao, there is a clamor as to how they will present the city as the world's biggest IT park in the world, according to Barriga.

He said the city needs more investors for the infrastructures. "If we build them, they will come. If we don't build them, they will not come."

Barriga said the city has the potential to become the biggest BPO hub in the country, considering that Davao is the best city in Mindanao and has a huge number of talents.

Another advantage of Davao is its being a center in Mindanao, said Barriga, adding there are local call centers in the city that have Spanish and Arabic accounts.

"Imagine if we can serve all those accounts," Barriga said, adding that what some call centers do is they enroll their talent to short-term courses in those languages.

The city earlier topped the list of next wave cities for IT-BPO locators for two consecutive years since 2010 which, according to Barriga, is an advantage for more companies to locate here.

Davao to pay P2.3-B debts 'til 2018

THE Davao City Government has a remaining P2,323,171,937.74 in debt and based on Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio’s estimates, it would take up to 2018 to pay-off all the city's debts.
Based on a certification issued by the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) forwarded to the City Government of Davao, the City has paid a total of P461,252,589.87 in 2011, while P145,806,740 was paid in the first four months of 2012.

Duterte-Carpio, in Monday’s press briefing at her office, bared her top three priority programs that include eliminating the city's debt.

"Hudton sa nato bayad tanan natong utang kay hantod 2018 pa bago nato mabayaran tanan (We have to pay all the city's debts until 2018)," she said.
The mayor also said that she did not avail of any loan from any financial institution since she assumed her post as city mayor in 2010.

She said she prefers spending only what is in the city's coffer generated from enterprise and tax revenues.
Of the city's outstanding loans, a bulk of the debts was used for the third phase of the city's traffic signalization amounting to P524,608,691.26, followed by the P523-million loan that financed various infrastructure projects of the City Government. (JOP)

Mayor: It’s not the running, it’s the post

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said Monday that her problem is not whether to run in the coming 2013 midterm elections but rather on what position.
Speaking in her weekly press briefing at her office Monday, the mayor said she is yet to meet with party and the people whom she needs to discuss her political plans.
At present, she said there are still no preparations being made among the Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, the quasi-local political party of the mayor.

"Modagan ko, provided that sa position na gusto nako, kung unsa ‘to, kana ang dili sa nako i-sulti kay syempre wala pa may discussion, planning yet, nothing (I will run, provided that in a position that I personally like, but on what position, that I will not tell you because we still haven’t discussed anything)," Duterte-Carpio said.

She said she is not in a hurry as there is still ample time between now and the filing of Certificate of Candidacy (COC) on October 1-5.
"But it can be in any position, pwede vice mayor, pwede konsehal, pwede mayor, pwede congressman sa pagkakaron, wala pa gyud ko naka-decide (it could be vice mayor, councilor, congressman, or mayor)," Duterte-Carpio said.
The lady mayor said she is not affected whether their opponent has already formed a line-up for the next elections.
The mayor refused to elaborate when asked about the position she liked and the position she might bid during the next elections.
She said regardless of the position she might chose later on, each position she is eyeing will surely for the betterment of the general public.
In earlier interviews, Duterte-Carpio said among the factors she's been considering before she bids for the next election are her finances and her health as she wants to have a baby.

Banana exporters lose P174M weekly

DAVAO CITY -- The banana exporting industry has been losing P174 million a week, or a total of P1.44 billion, since March 5 when China started to impose stricter regulations on the shipment of bananas from the Philippines.

In fact, as of Thursday afternoon, there are at least 1,500 container vans still being held for inspection in major ports in China, the Philippine Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA) said.

PBGEA president Stephen Antig said this is a result of the stricter quality measures recently imposed by the Chinese government.

He said under the new quality measures, if a single insect/mealy bug is found in a box, the whole container will be rejected and will be sent back to its origin or the Chinese government will dispose them.
Mindanao exporters, including small banana farmers, have been shipping more than 600 40-footer container vans containing a total of 924,000 boxes per week. Each container van has around 1,540 boxes.
Antig said Beijing Customs Inspection and Quarantine has already banned the entry of container vans of 41 exporters from Mindanao into China ports, including Dalian, Shanghai, Tianjin, Beijing, and Qingdao, after finding insects in a box of bananas.

China, Antig said, has given Philippine exporters until June 1 to comply with the new stricter requirements, including the improvement of the packing facilities.

In Mindanao, there are around 300 small and medium packing facilities.
"Kailangan sementado na ang floor, flowing ang tubig, ug butangan ug kural (The floor must be cemented. There should be a water supply, and must install a fence)," he said.
Jimmy Estimada, consultant Federation of ARB Banana-based Cooperatives (Fedco), said Thursday that even as they will be given until July, they still cannot comply with the requirements because of financial constraints.

Antig said China's move of not accepting banana produce from the Philippines will greatly affect the small banana farmers, and not so much about the big players of the industry.
Banana is the second largest export product of the Philippines, next to coconut.

PBGEA records showed that 70 percent of the country's banana production is sold to China. Of the 70 percent, 35 percent are the produce of small banana growers.
If China would push through with the ban, around 35,000 workers with more than 100,000 families would be affected, Antig said.

Earlier, Malacañang said that China has been pressuring the Philippines because of its defiance to surrender the Scarborough shoal in the West Philippine Sea.
"We are being bullied," Antig said.

Antig requested representatives from Department of Agriculture, Department of Foreign Affairs and Department of Finance, among others, to meet with their counterparts in China and discuss the problem.
He said there is no other country to which they can sell as much bananas as China need, not even Japan.
"Japan is already a mature market," he said. "If the Korean government would reduce the cost of its tariff, maybe they will buy more."

Last year, banana exporters here shipped a total of 158 million boxes to China.

Seventy-eight Taiwanese nationals, most of them young males and females, were arrested by Philippine and Taiwan police in a series of raids in Davao City, southern Philippines yesterday afternoon.

Senior Superintendent Ronald de la Rosa, city police chief, said the suspects have been charged with large-scale fraud, possibly involving "millions of dollars", in Taiwan.
"They are operating like an international fraud syndicate victimizing Taiwanese and Chinese nationals," De la Rosa said, adding that the suspects were here apparently to hide.
De la Rosa said back in Taiwan, the suspects would call their victims, telling them that they failed to pay their debts. If a victim refused to heed the demand, the group would then threaten him with arrest. The same group, now pretending to be the police, would call the victims, forcing them to pay a certain amount through bank transfer.
Aside from arresting the suspects, the raiding team also found several laptop computers and documents in three separate houses here.
Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said prior to the raids, the Taiwanese government had asked Philippine authorities to help in arresting the group.
"We are just cooperating with the Taiwanese government," Duterte said.
A representative from the Taiwan government who was part of the operations, refused to comment on the matter.

22 people including two leaders in several cities throughout the island suspected of forming a telephone scam ring based in the Philippines.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau said the arrests took place Wednesday in coordination with police in the Philippines, where another 78 Taiwanese suspects were also detained for alleged involvement in the scams.
