Also known as Near Field Communications, this technology allows a smartphone to communicate with other devices or smart tags via radio waves. Used as a tap-and-go payment system through Google Wallet and for exchanging information between phones. NFC is integrated into such devices as the Samsung Nexus S and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Unfortunately, users can’t do much with the feature yet. But they will be using it soon.

Baked into Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Google’s Beam feature uses NFC to let users do some nifty tricks, such as transferring videos, pictures, contacts, and websites by touching two Android phones together. For example, a YouTube video shared via Beam will pick up on another device exactly where it was last played. The technology does pose some security concerns, but those are being addressed. For instance, to prevent others from using your Android phone as a wallet, Google Wallet uses a PIN number that you must enter at timed intervals. Under Settings you can set the PIN timer to 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, or 30 minutes.

Movie Review: "Ghost Rider 2"

"Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" (Sony Pictures)

Poor Nicolas Cage, his career just keeps on going downhill. At least in the past when he made B action movies he would intersperse them with something worthwhile. Now it seems he just makes one bad movie after another. ìGhost Rider: Spirit of Vengeanceî is in keeping with that tradition. The original movie in this series was bad but this sequel is worse. Where is Eva Mendes when you need her?

As we know from the first film, and it is repeated here, Johnny Blaze (Cage) made a deal with the devil in order to try to save his father. Now he is human at some times and a demon at others. When he is in his demonic state he is all afire and skeletal. Not a pretty sight to see.

Now it seems that the devil had a son with a woman named Nadya (Violante Placido). His name is Danny (Fergus Riordan) and he is now thirteen years old. At the bequest of a man named Moreau (Idris Elba), Johnny agrees to help find and protect this Danny. Moreau says he will free him of his demon if he does.

The rest of the movie concerns Johnnyís efforts to protect Danny and also to confront the devil (Ciaran Hinds), or Roarke as he calls himself in this movie. This leads to some fairly good action sequences but not good enough to make the movie entertaining or enjoyable.

Cage, Hinds and Elba are all too good to be in a movie like this. They are slumming big time as they play these roles. Cage goes all crazy on us in his role, Hinds plays his tongue in cheek, and Elba plays his straight. Three actors in movie hell and these are the choices they make.

The special effects are fairly good and it is exciting to see a skeleton on a motorbike burning up the highway literally. You also get some other gory effects with a character who can cause anything and everything to decay and rot. He is called Carrigan (Johnny Whitworth).

The movie is rated PG-13 for profanity and violence. Hopefully this is the end of this series. I wouldnít want Cage to have to betray his talent in another ìGhost Riderî film. Better he go make ìNational Treasure 15î or something like that. Or maybe go way back and revisit his ìMoonstruckî character.

"Ghost Rider" is a movie that might appeal to fans of the comic book, but all others will want to sit this one out. I scored "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" an ungodly 4 out of 10.

Polaroid launches instant print digital camera

The company recently debuted its Z340 Instant Digital Camera, which combines the Polaroid devices of days gone by with modern digital technology. The result is a 14-megapixel camera that delivers instant, full-color prints in less than a minute.

The Polaroid Z340 uses ZINK Inkless Printing to produce 3×4″ prints of photos that can be edited (adding borders, cropping, etc) before printing. The camera retails for $250 and is equipped with a 2.7” bright color LCD for viewing images, has a SD card slot for expanded memory and comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

Apple announces Mountain Lion operating system

Mountain Lion, which is available to developers from today, takes more features and applications from the iPad and iPhone and brings them to Apple's laptop and desktop computers. It will be available to users, Apple says, "in late Summer 2012".

The new version of OS X brings iOS features such as Notification Centre, Game Centre and AirPlay mirroring will now be a part of the Mac Applications such as Notes and Reminders, which will be familiar to iPhone and iPad users are also coming to OS X.

“The developer preview of Mountain Lion comes just seven months after the incredibly successful release of Lion and sets a rapid pace of development for the world’s most advanced personal computer operating system," said Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, in a statement.
The biggest new feature is Gatekeeper, which lets you control the apps that run on your Mac. With Gatekeeper turned on, your Mac will run only apps downloaded from the Mac App Store or those from elsewhere that have "a unique Developer ID from Apple". For added security, users can choose to run only apps from the Mac App Store.

The new security features clearly nudge users towards the Mac App Store - and towards a more controlled application environment, similar to the iTunes App Store. However, Gatekeeper is optional, so users who prefer to run whatever apps they like can continue to do so.

As with iOS, Twitter has been integrated throughout Mountain Lion to make it easier to share links, photos and other content. Sharing to Flickr and Vimeo is also possible from several places within the new version of the OS but Facebook and YouTube remain notable omissions.

Mountain Lion extends the integration of iCloud, Apple's cloud storage service, further into OS X. When users start up a Mountain Lion computer for the first time they will have the option to sign in with their Apple ID and automatically set up iCloud, FaceTime, the iTunes Store and the Mac App Store. In a statement, Apple said: "The new iCloud Documents pushes any changes to all your devices so documents are always up to date, and a new API helps developers make document-based apps work with iCloud."

Fujifilm XP30 14MP 5x Waterproof Digital Camera for $134 + free shipping

Last year’s Envy laptops were a bit of a disappointment. The design that wowed me in 2010 had grown stale by 2011; at that point, the rest of the world had caught up to and surpassed the Envy’s design, while HP was content to update only the system’s internal components. The new Envy 15 and 17, which HP released right at the end of 2011, finally feature a whole new design. For the most part, it’s great, but a few nagging issues keep the system from being an easy recommendation.

First, know that the new Envy laptops come in 15.6-inch and 17-inch sizes, with the 14-inch version transitioning to the new Spectre Ultrabook. Our review concerns the 15.6-inch Envy 15, which is pretty big as all-purpose laptops go. It’s 15 inches wide, 9.6 inches deep, and 1.2 inches thick. With a weight of 5.8 pounds, it’s not a back-breaker, but it certainly doesn’t qualify as “lightweight.” The silver-toned aluminum inside deck and edges are reminiscent of a MacBook Pro, but Apple’s 15-inch laptop is smaller in every dimension and just a tad lighter.

Our $1250 review configuration (price as of January 25, 2012) is the base model with a single upgrade (more on that later). It features a Core i5-2430M processor, 6GB of RAM, a Radeon HD 7690M discrete graphics card, and a 500GB hard drive. Bear in mind that although the Radeon HD 7690 may carry 7000-series branding, it doesn't actually use the new architecture, and it isn't a product of the 28nm manufacturing process that AMD is using for the 7000 series of desktop graphics cards. Instead, it’s a “rebrand” of the previous 40nm generation, equivalent to the Radeon HD 6730M. Overall, this selection of hardware was enough to power the system to a decent WorldBench 6 score of 119, as well as to reasonable gaming frame rates, though you won’t be able to play at the highest resolutions and detail settings.

The aluminum keyboard deck looks and feels all right, but the lid, supposedly also made of aluminum, feels like cheap plastic, and the bottom is plastic. Overall the aesthetic isn't bad, but it pales in comparison to, say, the upcoming Envy 14 Spectre. The full-size backlit keyboard is quite easy to type on, but I’m not as enamored of the touchpad. It is large and smooth, and it tracks movement well. It supports all the common modern multifinger gestures, too. But the bottom quarter or so, where one would click to activate the left or right buttons, is quite stiff. Worse, the palm rejection is horrible: No matter how I tweaked the touchpad settings, I couldn’t type more than a couple sentences without seeing the cursor jump around.

Our review unit does have one upgrade, and it’s a genuine deal-breaker. For $150 more than the base $1099 price, you can upgrade the Envy 15’s 1366-by-768-pixel “BrightView” display to a full HD “Radiance” display with a resolution of 1920 by 1080. This upgrade not only increases resolution, but also greatly improves the panel technology from TN (Twisted Nematic) to IPS (In-Plane Switching). The upgraded technology gives the display bright and brilliant color, plus very wide viewing angles. Normally this is the kind of thing I would consider a must-have, so what’s the problem? It turns out that most users with the IPS panel upgrade have reported a color-calibration issue, in which red shades have an orange hue. And that's certainly true of our review unit. You can find a lengthy forum thread about this problem at Notebook Review, as well as a thread on HP’s support forum. The high-res, bright IPS display upgrade is a major selling point for the Envy 15, and this color problem is very real and very disconcerting. HP is “looking into it,” but until the company comes up with a satisfactory solution, I would steer clear of the display upgrade.

Ports and connectivity are real highlights. The left side of the Envy 15 features a slot-loading DVD-RW drive, but the system has no Blu-ray option. That omission is pretty odd, given that the machine’s thickness should be able to accommodate a Blu-ray drive, and the laptop is directly aimed at entertainment enthusiasts. Next to the optical drive are two USB 3.0 ports, a microphone jack, and two headphone jacks. The right side houses the gigabit ethernet jack, full-size HDMI and DisplayPort connections, a USB 2.0 port, and a multifunction memory card slot. Wireless support is excellent, with 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, WiDi wireless display support, and even HP’s own wireless audio (compatible with KleerNet devices).

HP is proud of its Beats audio integration, and rightfully so. The analog volume knob at the right edge is a delight, and far easier to use than mashing a volume button up or down. The Envy 15 has a dedicated mute button, too, plus a Beats button that brings up the rich audio tools. You get full control over audio features such as volumes on various inputs and outputs, equalization, and echo and noise cancellation for the microphone. Play a movie or listen to music, and you’ll be pleased by the volume and clarity of the built-in speakers.

HP’s built-in software is improving, but still manages to annoy a little. All the custom menus and stuff are thankfully gone, and the included software is pretty good: You get Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements 9, CyberLink PowerDVD and YouCam, Skype, and lots of Windows Live items (Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Messenger, and the like). Unfortunately, you’ll see nag notes from Norton Internet Security, which seems to go out of its way to wreck the user experience on new PCs. You’ll also encounter both the Bing Bar and the Norton Bar when you fire up the Web browser--that's two bars too many. Overall, though, the Envy 15 has a lot less “cruft” than HP’s laptops used to carry, and it's nothing that a couple minutes in the Add/Remove Programs control panel can’t fix.

The new HP Envy 15 is a fairly slick all-purpose laptop, if a little on the bulky side. It has lots of great wireless and wired connectivity options, fantastic audio, a very useful analog volume dial, and a good keyboard. HP has two major issues to work out before I can recommend it, though. The first is the color-calibration problem on the otherwise very desirable display upgrade option, and the other is the terrible palm detection and stiff clicking on the touchpad. If the company can address those two sticking points, it will be easy to give the Envy 15 a thumbs-up.

Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30 mm VR Zoom Lens

Nikon launched its first mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, the Nikon 1 J1 and its more advanced sibling, the V1, last fall. The Nikon 1 J1 is the smaller and more affordable of the two, although both were designed from the ground up around a 10 megapixel (effective) CMOS sensor and feature a new lens mount and a few matching lenses.

In many ways, the J1 is an entry-level camera, particularly for those who want to move up from a point and shoot model, but it has enough manual controls to attract more experienced users as well.

The J1 is available in several kits including a single lens kit (10-30mm); a 2 lens wide-angle kit (10-30mm and a fast, f/2.8 10mm prime); 2 lens zoom kit (10-30mm VR, 30-110mm VR); and a two lens zoom kit in pink (10-30mm, 30-110mm, with pink accessories). Nikon recently released an adaptor for Nikkor E-FS lenses, expanding the range of glass for the J1.

Design and notable features
Available in white, black, red, silver, or pink—depending on the camera/lens kit selected—the Nikon 1 J1 body is tiny but well built. Although it measures a mere 4.2 by 2.4 by 1.2 inches and weighs only 8.3 ounces, most of its lenses prevent the J1 from being pocketable.

Unlike the V1, the Nikon 1 J1 does not have a viewfinder. But it does sport a 3-inch, 460,000 dot LCD that works pretty well under most lighting conditions. The J1 is equipped with a petite built-in flash but doesn’t accept an external flash like the V1.

A streamlined design and lack of a grip means the best way to hold the camera is to grasp the corners between thumb and forefinger, which is the norm for many compact cameras. Operation is pretty straightforward although consumers should at least browse the user manual to understand what lies beneath the options on the mode dial: Motion Snapshot, Smart Photo Selector, Still Image, and Movie. The occasional tip or hint will appear on the LCD suggesting a trip to the F (function) button for mode-specific options.

Below the mode dial on the camera’s rear panel is a typical compact camera control layout: display, playback, and menu buttons, along with a multi-selector/command dial for navigation, adjustments, and accessing AE/AF lock, exposure compensation, flash, and self-timer. The top panel is home to the tiny pop-up flash, on/off, shutter, and movie buttons. However, the J1 is menu-dependent for anything above the basics, including exposure modes.

Features and performance
The J1’s control layout is designed for simplicity but the camera is well stocked with features, including manual and semimanual exposure controls, Raw capture, and full HD video. In addition to a full complement of video controls (including manual exposure and AF), the J1 offers a few non-standard movie options.

Although not unique to the J1, users can shoot slow motion video at frame rates of 400 or 1200, and the camera is great for taking slo-mo clips of action like a dog shaking off water or a sports scene. The files are physically small and low resolution, but they’re fun to watch and great for posting on the Web.

Perhaps one of the most interesting, and potentially useful, functions is being able to shoot stills while simultaneously shooting video without any breaks in video—I don’t know any other camera that can do that.

A fun, but not necessarily practical, feature is Motion Snapshot, which produces a combo file. The camera buffers video and saves about one second of video captured just before the shutter snap. The video portion plays back in slow motion, fades out and then displays the still image at the end, accompanied by one of four themed music soundtracks.

Nikon made some hefty claims about the J1’s performance and, for the most part, those claims are justified. Autofocus, particularly in good light, is fast thanks to a hybrid AF system that utilizes phase detection or contrast detect AF, depending on the lighting conditions (in low light, contrast detection is used because it activates an AF illuminator). Unfortunately, it sometimes locked AF in the wrong place, but most test shots were accurately focused.

Continuous shooting starts at 5 frames-per-second at full resolution with autofocus, but can zip along as fast as 60 frames-per-second (with AF locked at the first frame). The Smart Photo Selector, similar to Nikon’s Best Shot Selector, captures a burst of up to 20 frames and then selects the five best shots. Users can opt to save all five or only one.

Image quality
I found that the J1’s images looked best when captured under bright lighting conditions. I shot with three kit lenses and, on average, most shots produced respectable detail. Color rendition was good, with relatively rich and saturated colors. Unfortunately, the tiny flash didn’t help much in low light, even after going into the menu system to increase the flash’s intensity. The Nikon J1 did not fare well in Macworld’s lab tests.

Given the camera’s relatively small sensor, image noise was an issue. Pixel peepers will spy shadow noise at its lowest ISO (100) but it’s not bad. Increase the ISO and noise levels rise, of course, so it’s best to keep it lower than 800. The best bet is to shoot in Raw and process the images to reduce noise, but if you don’t want to hassle with post-processing, turn off the camera’s noise reduction to avoid extra smearing.

T-Mobile Lumia 710 Grammy Awards Ad Made US Consumers Look Surprised That Nokia Is Still Making Phones

Nokia has never been a powerful brand in the United States as the consumers always preferred Palm and BlackBerry devices before the launch of the iPhone and Android. Well, the company has hit an all-time low in 2012 if it were to consider the jokes made by multiple Twitter users last night.

T-Mobile has bought several commercial spots during the Grammy Awards 2012 event, and most of them mentioned the Nokia Lumia 710. Lots of people were unable to tell the difference between an old Nokia device and the fact that it’s a new Windows Phone 7 handset, and they were surprised that Nokia still existed.

If you searched for “Nokia phones” on Twitter, then you would have been “welcomed” by several tweets from people wondering whether Nokia is still making phones. Apparently, they didn’t know that Nokia is making Windows Phone 7 devices now, and many of them were curious to find out whether they will have Snake pre-installed.

The reaction of the Twitter users is pretty harsh as we’re sure that they’re probably not familiar with the tech world – Windows Phone 7 has been around for about one and a half years, while the first Nokia Lumia phone was launched last year. Despite a very rough start, it appears that the Windows Phone 7 platform will finally take off later this year.

Anyway, the opinions of the consumers matter, and the Finland-based company will have a lot of trouble selling its devices in the US. Will the T-Mobile Lumia 710 be successful? After all, it’s the smaller and less powerful brother of the Lumia 800 and Lumia 900. To answer the previous question, I’d say that this smartphone won’t be sold in too many units in the US. In Europe, things are different as Nokia sold more than 1 million units in just a couple of months.

Well, if you are one of those people who are unaware that Nokia is still making phones, you should know that the company never stopped doing them, and it will most likely continue to make smartphones for several years.

Nokia and Microsoft are expected to invest millions of dollars in marketing in the US this year, and we’re very curious to find out whether the campaign will be successful considering the fact that many consumers “couldn’t believe that Nokia phones still existed.”

Meanwhile Nokia is also preparing to launch an improved version of the Lumia 710. It’s going to be called Lumia 730 and it will feature support for both CDMA and GSM networks, and a 8-megapixel camera. The smartphone is expected to be announced later this month at the Mobile World Congress 2012.

Canon GPS camera
