My name is Janneke Parrish. I'm one of the founders of the solidarity union, AppleTogether We are the union representing Apple workers, and one of many unions in the tech industry.

In 2021, Apple fired me for my work with #AppleToo, a movement that brought the discrimination, harassment, and retaliation that many Apple workers were experiencing to light. Since then, I've continued to be outspoken about workers' rights, and how unions can ensure those rights for tech workers.

I now have a new book - The Tech Worker's Guide to Unions - that goes into not only my experiences at Apple, but the experiences of dozens of other tech workers and organisers throughout the industry. It's a guide not only on forming a union in the tech industry, but of being aware of your rights more generally, and of knowing how to stand up when your rights are violated.

I’m Shane Harris, an intelligence and national security reporter at The Washington Post, where I cover the CIA and other U.S. spy agencies. My colleague Sam Oakford and I obtained hundreds of classified documents that Jack Teixeira allegedly shared on Discord. Sam and I, working with our partners at PBS Frontline, spent several months investigating Teixeira’s online world to understand who he is and why he allegedly shared this classified information with his friends.

I’m Samuel Oakford, a visual forensics journalist at The Washington Post with a background in open source reporting. Shane and I obtaining hundreds of classified documents allegedly shared on Discord by Jack Teixeira. We never stopped reporting on his story, and along with Chris, spent months charting the online world of Teixeira, tracking down his friends to better understand what set the stage for the alleged leaking. In 1966, at the age of 14, I left school to join my father, Roy Bates, in transforming an abandoned World War II fortress in the North Sea into our own sovereign nation. On September 2, 1967, we raised our flag & declared this fortress the Principality of Sealand, with my father as Prince and my mother as Princess.

Our sovereignty was fortified in 1968 when I was involved in an incident with a British vessel. I faced weapons charges for firing warning shots, but a British court declared it had no jurisdiction, as the incident occurred in international waters.

A decade later, our history took a dramatic turn. A group of Germans, with ambitions of turning Sealand into a Luxury casino, staged an armed invasion, taking me captive. Following my release, my father & I led a dramatic helicopter raid to regain control of Sealand. We released all prisoners except one specific German, which sparked an international incident. After Britain declined involvement, citing their 1968, the German government dispatched a diplomat directly to Sealand to negotiate the prisoner's release. This action effectively amounted to a de facto recognition of Sealand's sovereignty

Sealand boasts its own flag, currency, passports, national anthem, stamps, and even a national American Football Team. A Hollywood film depicting our adventures is also in the works.

Today, Sealand is more than a nation; it's a global community united by the values of freedom, self-determination, and adventure. Through our Noble Title initiative, we invite like-minded individuals worldwide to join our community, supporting the ongoing maintenance and regeneration efforts of our fortress home. I went into sudden cardiac arrest at home this past February - my husband called 911 and started CPR. It took 24 minutes for EMTs to resuscitate me. After 9 days in the ICU, I was declared “cognitively intact” and have no visible brain damage on MRIs. I also have a normal EEG despite a history of seizures and status epilepticus for over 30 minutes right after resuscitation. Greetings Reddit! My name is Brad. My wife, 2 children ( #3 on the way), and I live on a 10 acre homestead in central Minnesota. This past year I’ve seen an explosion of people interested in our lifestyle. Not only in real life, but on Reddit as well.

Born in Up State New York (St. Lawrence county). I grew up on my family’s second homestead. We lost our original homestead that my great-great-grandfather originally settled to the 1954?-1959? St. Lawrence Seaway/ Moses-Saunders Power Dam project. As a millennial, my childhood and teenage years were spent alongside my father, grandpa, great grandpa tending to homestead responsibilities. Some of my fondest memories were spent listening to my great grandfather’s “ back in the day” stories.

I have the cliché “country boy moves to a city to find opportunity and money. Finds the love of his life, marries her and starts a family. Moves family back to the county to live out a much more wholesome lifestyle.”

My objective of this IAmA is to give the aspiring homesteaders and purely curious folk an opportunity to ask about homesteading. The good, bad, and ugly. My responses will be honest and every question will be answered. Be it 5 questions or 10,000.

My background is in nursing and hospital administration. In my mid-50s, I started my solo travels by taking a healthcare job in Saudi Arabia. From there, I was invited to work for the World Health Organization, then the United Nations Development Program and the International Executive Service Corps. Over more than 20 years, these positions allowed me to indulge my sense of adventure and penchant for personal connection across seven continents.

I've gone white water rafting on the Nile, trekked through the jungles of Uganda to see the gorillas, lived with a Shona family in Zimbabwe, was circled by a tiger shark after exploring a wreck in the Red Sea, climbed Mt. Hi, I’m Dr. Neil Howard from the University of Bath. I research Universal Basic Income, also known as ‘UBI’, ‘Basic Income’ or ‘Guaranteed Income’. I direct two large-scale UBI experiments in South Asia and am involved in UBI research around the world.

A Basic Income is a simple, regular, individual, and unconditional cash payment to help people survive and thrive in cash-based society. It is a policy proposal to transform social security and the world we live in.

Many of the problems we face come down to income insecurity: poverty, illness, crime, depression - all can be understood as symptoms of the precariousness that so many people have to live with.

Researchers argue that a Basic Income would make sure that all of us, no matter who we are or where we come from, have a secure financial floor on which to stand and build. Evidence suggests that this basic security would increase health, wellbeing, freedom, creativity, trust, connection, and social cohesion.

Hello! You may know Zach from SMBC or BAHFest or Bea Wolf, or Kelly for co-discovering this super weird wasp, or both of us combined from a book called Soonish. After WAY too long, we have a new book, A City on Mars (click here for UK-based readers), on everything to do with space settlement.Six years ago we decided to write a book about how space settlement was cool and probably coming soon. A few years of research in, it became clear that space settlement probably won’t happen soon (for science/tech reasons), and probably shouldn’t happen soon (for ethical and legal reasons). Being sci fi geeks who write for a nerdy audience, you can imagine this was a distressing finding. This resulted in a nightmarishly large research project to try to make as comprehensive and detailed a response as possible, while also making it a fun book to read.Ask us anything at all, but our expertise right this second is about space settlement. Possible topics could be law, ethics, ecology, human reproduction, or whether space will save the biosphere. Popular topics could be toilets, sex, space-tampons, how human bodies respond to space, and whether space cannibalism is legal (it’s complicated).

I am senior lecturer in behavioural economics. The focus of my research is on the motives of investors and entrepreneurs to think “beyond the money” towards the social impact of their investments/enterprises, even if the societal impact is at the expense of their personal financial returns/profits.

My aim is to both understand these motives, and to think about how we can encourage more of this ‘world-changing’ behaviour across society. I employ social preference theory, in which people are not narrowly self-interested, but act with a sense of altruism, fairness, empathy or warm-glow when they think of others.

I work with a colleague in our psychology department to test these motives. For example, see this paper.

And here is a theory piece of mine where investors may think beyond the money to act with empathy and fairness.

More recently, I am beginning to examine Christian investing, which has parallels with social impact investing. Ask Me Anything!
