However, with more than 1’000 stations within the city you could easily calculate itineraries of less than 30 minutes each.

History

Le Marais (literally the Swamp) in Paris is the number one must go quarter. There are different reasons for this. First, it is now a very trendy and chic place. Second, as you will discover with this brief history, you will get the feel of the medieval Paris in this quarter. The former residents here were very wealthy. Therefore the building are really beautiful.

In the late Middle Age this quarter was constituted of a lot of small parcels where vegetables were cultivated for the city. Then, in the 16th century, noblemen and bourgeois were looking for a place to build their residences. This place was not developed at this time and therefore was perfect for this. Later, in the 18th century, they erected splendid hôtels particuliers (large one-family houses).

However, after the Revolution the rich left the place which became more bohemian and poor. The officials of Paris wanted to modernize it. A lot of the city was redesigned by Haussmann under Napoleon which created big avenues. They didn’t have time to redesign this quarter which is nowaday one of the most famous Jewish quarter of Paris.

One treasure of this quarter is the Place des Vosges. Henri IV built. Victor Hugo lived there at the #6 when he wrote the famous Les Miserables. Nowadays, it is a very appreciated square of Paris. Some say it is the most beautiful one!

The Latin Quarter is called like this because latin was the language of study for the students in this old quarter. In fact, its history begins in 1215 with the creation of the first university in France and soon after the creation of La Sorbonne (1253), the nowadays famous university.

In 1793, latin was officially not anymore the language of study but the quarter stayed linked to universities under Napoleon I. Later, in May 1968 it is the scene of strikes and rebellion from the students.

History

The history of the famous cabaret Moulin Rouge begins in 1889 with two business men : Joseph Oller and Charles Zidier. They saw the success of another dance hall in Montmartre and decided to create a concurrent one. Actually, they create one of the most visited attraction of Paris.

They bought an old dance hall called White Queen and had to renovate it. They erected a windmill above the entrance and painted it in red. This intrigued the people and they began to come see the show. Then, they poach the best dancer of their concurrent in Montmartre. She was already well known for her daring behaviour. She was called La Gouloue.

Toulouse-Lautrec was one of the visitors and he draw some very iconic images of Paris nightlife while watching the dance. Now you can admire some of them in the Museum of Montmartre.

The first line of the parisian metro opened in 1900 for the Olympic games at the Bois de Vincennes. Therefore, the line Porte de Vincennes – Porte Maillot is the oldest one. A few other lines came right after to prepare for the World Fair the same year. However, two compagnies managed the few existing lines implying a different design or the use of the same name for two different stations.

In 1913, already 10 lines constitute the network of the parisian metro. Between the two World Wars they opened three more and the two companies merged. Then, it is only in 1998 that a new line was added. This 14th one is very modern and serve as a demonstration model. (It is the purple one from St Lazare to Olympiades).

History

The famous Galeries Lafayette (premium commercial center) is a must go in Paris. First, Paris is one of the fashion capitals. Its development began in 1893 with two cousins from Alsace (Theophile Bader and Alphonse Kahn). They began with only 70 square meters.

This style fits perfectly with the idea of the cousins. Indeed, they wanted to build a luxury bazaar with different stores under one roof. It is exactly what it is. Plus, one day (around 1958), Theophile Bader decided to develop luxury fashion affordable for everyone. Therefore, he acquired production capacity to realize it. Then, the center also became a place to exhibit artists and designers. Nowadays a space is dedicated to emerging creators.
