Does anyone else feel my pain? A few years ago I convinced my folks to get a PC. They didn't know what to get so I got them a nice used Dell from a friend. It worked great but I suddenly became the support center for everything related.

My folks are in thier 80's now and it's been about 8 years since I got my dad hooked on the internet. He's on his 3rd PC a spanking new Dell with Windows Vista.

But of course I had to move all the old files from the other PC, set the old one up for my Mom so she has her own PC now and network them so she could print on the one printer. Whew...

I don't know what my mom does online but she must click all sorts of links and stuff she gets in email. The viruses and spyware I cleaned off their PC's a few months ago took hours.

I was dertermined to find software that would be easy for both of them to use and that they could run on a regular basis as to avoid me having to clean out and "tune up" their computers.

Here's what I did for my folks and would recommend for anyone.

Run Ad-Aware at least once a month for optimal control of scans, malware removal, and damage repair.
Run Spyware Doctor at least once a month to remove spyware.
Run Registry Mechanic at least once a month to improve PC performance, remove unwanted dead links in the registry (from installing and removing programs, temporary internet stuff, and all the junk you can't see and don't need).

Believe it or not thousands of people spell judgement recovery this way but the proper way to spell judgement recovery is judgment recovery. There is no "e" after the "g". I was just researching information and discovered that I'm not the only one that misspells judgment recovery from time to time.

Okay, that is not why I wrote this article. I just wanted to let my readers know that it is possible to locate bank accounts and assets legally for judgment recovery (no matter how you spell it).

A Social Security Death Records search also known as Social Security Death Index "SSDI" is a database of death records available online from many resources. It is included in most reverse social security number lookup searches.

This list is a brief history of the SSDI:

August 14, 1935 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the Social Security Act into law.
1936-1937 - Approximately 30 million U.S. residents apply for and receive Social Security numbers.
Jan 1, 1937 - Workers begin acquiring credits toward old-age insurance benefits, and payroll tax (FICA) withholding begins.
1947 - Application for Social Security number no longer includes employer information.
1962 - Electronic requests for benefits become commonly used, resulting in what is known as the Social Security Death Index.
1963 - Issuance of Social Security numbers beginning with 700-728 to railroad employees was discontinued.
1965 - President Lyndon B. Johnson signs Medicare into law. Many citizens over age 65 receive Social Security cards for the first time.
1967 - Department of Defense begins using Social Security numbers instead of military service numbers to identify Armed Forces personnel.
1972 - SSA is required by law to issue Social Security numbers to any legally admitted alien upon entry, and to obtain evidence of age and citizenship or alien status and identity.
1972 - SSA begins assigning Social Security numbers and issuing cards centrally from Baltimore, and the area number assigned is based on the mailing address zip code from the application.
1989 - SSA program enables parents to automatically obtain a Social Security number for a newborn infant when the birth is registered with the state.

The SSDI is an index to information about persons with Social Security numbers whose deaths have been reported to the Social Security Administration. The death may have been reported by a survivor requesting benefits. It may have been reported in order to stop Social Security Benefits to the deceased. Funeral homes often report deaths to the SSA as a service to family members.

Beginning in 1962, the SSA began to use a computer database for processing requests for benefits. About 98% percent of the people in the SSDI died after 1962, but a few death dates go back as far as 1937.

Because legal Aliens in the U.S. can obtain a Social Security card, their names may appear in the SSDI if their deaths were reported. Some 400,000 railroad retirees are also included in the SSDI.

The Social Security Death Index is not an index to all deceased individuals who have held Social Security Numbers. It is not a database of all deceased individuals who have received Social Security Benefits, or whose families have received survivor benefits.

If you are pretty sure the individual you are looking meets the criteria for inclusion in the SSDI but does not appear in the index, there are some things you might try:

If searching by name, try searching by possible alternate name spellings.
If searching by birth or death dates, change them around (i.e. instead of searching for 5 Oct 1958 [10/5/58], search for 10 May 1958 [5/10/58])
Change years around (i.e. 1974 becomes 1947).
Use all other possible spellings of the name (and perhaps some that aren't so likely). When searching for a name like O'Reilly, or other names with punctuation in them, try the name without the punctuation (e.g. OReilly).
If you are looking for someone using first and last name but can't find them try searching with first initial and last name.
There are also rare instances of what appear to be middle initials included with the last name, so you may want to try that as well.
We also recommend switching the last name and first name around.
Or, try searching for a middle name as a first name.
Even if you know a piece of information, try omitting it (i.e. if you know first and last name and death date, try leaving off the first name).

If none of these suggestions work, it is possible that the SSDI has erroneously omitted your subject. If this is the case, you can contact the SSA to correct it.

I see a lot of people requesting a free people search, unfortunately, there is really no such thing as a free people search with social security number.

But don't despair; I will reveal the truth about free people searches here. No tricks, no schemes, no sales pitch - only information and explanations.

First let me explain. There really is no way that someone can enter a social security number into a web site and get the name or address of a person for free. Social Security Numbers are used as a National ID number and there are security issues surrounding the data.

Almost everyone you do business with (Companies, medical, dental, credit, financial, businesses, and even private firms) request your Social Security Number (Tax Identification) when you do business with them. Even your employer needs your SSN for their records.
You are constantly giving out your SSN on all sorts of forms, employment applications and much more. In some states your SSN is or was used as a Drivers License number or on a health insurance card as an identification number.
There are also many companies that collect, store and warehouse all types of data so there is a cost associated with data entry, security, data storage, encryption, administration, overhead, insurance, and so many other business expenses. That's a main reason you really can't get an effective free people search.

There is also a lot of concern about identity theft so many states and businesses are changing the way they use and share SSN information.

If you could visit a web site and enter in a SSN and get back personal information about the social security number without any form of payment, then that web site really has no idea who requested or obtains information. That would not be good.

If you have license plate numbers and need owners name to that license plate you can review the available searches however, you must have a legitimate DPPA purpose for your search.

There is no such thing as a public records license plate numbers search. You must hire a professional to obtain license plate information and you must provide a valid DPPA reason.

Your search must conform to a DPPA purposes as follows:

For use by any requester, if the requester demonstrates it has obtained the written consent of the individual to whom the information pertains.
For use by an employer or its agent or insurer to obtain or verify information relating to a holder of a commercial driver's license that is required under the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 (49 U.S.C. App. 2710 et seq.)
For use by any insurer or insurance support organization, or by a self-insured entity, or its agents, employees, or contractors, in connection with claims investigation activities, antifraud activities, rating or underwriting.
For use by any government agency, including any court or law enforcement agency, in carrying out its functions, or any private person or entity acting on behalf of a Federal, State, or local agency in carrying out its functions.
For use in connection with matters of motor vehicle or driver safety and theft; motor vehicle emissions; motor vehicle product alterations, recalls, or advisories; performance monitoring of motor vehicles, motor vehicle parts and dealers, motor vehicle market research activities, including survey research; and removal of non-owner records from the original owner records of motor vehicle manufacturers.
For use in connection with any civil, criminal, administrative, or arbitral proceeding in any Federal, State, or local court or agency or before any self-regulatory body, including the service of process, investigation in anticipation of litigation, and the execution or enforcement of judgments and orders, or pursuant to an order of a Federal, State, or local court.
For use in providing notice to the owners of towed or impounded vehicles.
For use in connection with the operation of private toll transportation facilities.

Natural Supplements for a dog

Well, this is a bit off topic but I think enough of my readers have a dog as do I. He's with me at work often and he is a great companion. Loyal to the bone, always by my side, ah... I digress.. if people were as loyal and trusting to each other as our pets are, the world would be a better place.

I take Romeo (an Italian Greyhound) to the dog park 3 - 5 days a week. He has a blast running and playing while I talk with other dog owners. People and their pets are very fascinating.

Everyone talks about their pets or their job and it's just a great way to network with new people and get some friends for your pet. It's always interesting when I meet someone new and they ask what I do. I always get questions about how to find an ex-girlfriend from college or former roommates or track down dead beat debtors.

Just goes to show you that people search is for anyone (even pet owners) trying to find someone, even a former veterinarian for your best friend :)

While at the Dog Park I met a woman who owns a terrier (Lucy, formerly "Bo", but she had to change the name as it sounded like "No") and a pug (Spike). Over the next few weeks I will be answering several questions we get asked quite often. The first question is.

Do you guys offer bulk searches?

A quick simple answer is yes, but it's just not that easy. Most of our searches are performed on an individual and personal basis by private investigators so when we hear this question we often have follow up questions to best answer this one.

Some of our questions include; what kind of bulk searches? If you have hundreds or even thousands (tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands are best) of records in a database that you need "cleaned" or matched, those are service we provide but not on our standard web site.

If you have a bulk search need, it's best to call our office or use our online contact form and we can work up a custom quote for you.

For example; if you are a university, medical facility, research group or other type of institution or business and have years worth of old patient or customer records and you need to figure out which ones are deceased, that is something we can do for you quickly and inexpensively.

You can simply supply us with a text file of Social Security Numbers and we will return a file that tells you the number of valid Socials, along with invalid Socials as well as which Socials Security numbers have been reported as deceased.

Turn around for bulk Social Security Death records could be as quick as 24 - 48 business hours and if you have over 150,000 records can be just a few pennies.

We can do similar bulk searches for reverse cell phone information (albeit not as accurate as an in-depth private investigator search) but when you have hundreds or even thousands of Social Security Numbers, cell phone numbers or names that you need phone numbers for; you have to consider a bulk database provider.

Can you find current cell phone number

A recent question from a "Potential Customer" submitted on our contact us page.

Question: Within the last few months our subject has changed cell phone numbers. We need the CURRENT one. We can provide our debtors complete SSN, Name, & previous address.

Other companies on the Internet advertise this at $14.95. Can you provide the current cell phone for the same price if all of the above information is furnished to you?

Answer: I don't know of any company that can locate an individual's current cell phone number for $14.95 with much accuracy. We would appreciate it if you could send us the links from these "other companies" so we can test their services. If there's a better, lower cost, more efficient way to conduct this type of research we would love to know about it.

Since we are not aware of any private investigator that will work for $15, the $14.95 fee must be an automated database. Typically, online databases don't have the most current information (since it takes time to update those) and that's where you would need a professional investigators help.

We have been online since 1999 and offer access to prescreened professional investigators that conduct actual investigations to find accurate up-to-date information.

How to find individual's addresses by social security number

We are often asked this question and our top three answers are listed below.

A good option is a basic reverse SSN search. This would provide the last reported address and address history information.

This is the least expensive search and the investigator would conduct several manual proprietary searches using the subjects SSN to locate address information and conduct cross reference searches to assess which of the addresses were the most recently reported.

This is a good low cost search option that can produce a current address but is not guaranteed since the investigator does not verify the last reported address is still current.

If your subjects moves often or has moved within the last year or so, it might not be current.
A Utility search is often a better option to locate an address as you will find out where the subject has utilities in his/her name as verified by the SSN.

This works best if you think your subject owns his/her own home or rents a place and has utilities in their own name.

This would not be a good option if your subject owns multiple properties or, is a landlord that provides utilities with the rental. This would also not be a good choice if your subject was someone that may be living with a spouse or a roommate that has the utilities in their name or if your subject is renting where utilities are provided.
The best option would be to request a Guaranteed Current Address Search.

This is an in-depth search where the investigator will run down all leads during a 4 week long investigation. This is the only search that guarantees the investigator will verify the address is still current.

I can't tell you how many times we are asked about debt collection letters and how to collect on a debt. Well, I finally found a service worth telling you about that can provide a wide variety of debt collection letters for a creditor.

It seems that the collection business is a big mystery to many individuals and small businesses that are owed money. Whether it's from a bad check someone gave you (NSF), a judgment, child or spousal delinquencies, or a promissory note gone bad, it's difficult for the average person to be a creditor.

I have helped many collection agencies and skip tracers with search services and I wanted to introduce a new flat rate collection company that offers debt collection letters for creditors.

Google offers free 411 for business listings

Just saw that Google has introduced a new FREE 411 service. You can ask for BUSINESSES by name or Category (no residential listings).

Call 1-800-GOOG-411 (1 800 466 4411). The service will also provide details, such as address and will CONNECT you for FREE.

This is easier to do than the free GOOGL (46645) text messaging if you are driving, and sure beats paying the 411 fee through your cellular provider.

Can I get someone's credit report?

We get this question a lot:
"So and so" owes me money, how can I pull his credit report without him knowing about it? I need to find out where he works or lives to serve him papers.

Unfortunately and I guess fortunately you really can't. Sometimes it would be really helpful to pull a credit report on someone that owes you money before you try and chase them down. This way you know if it's worth spending time, money, and effort pursuing them to get what's owed.

Sometimes we're all glad it's not that easy to obtain one and there are laws in place preventing anyone from getting that information.

I'm no attorney and I don't claim to know much about the various laws on this subject. If you are a lawyer, or know the law, please leave comments to help others.

We currently don't offer to obtain credit reports. There are plenty of places to obtain your own credit report and you can obtain the report of others with the right credentials.

One of the credentials to obtain someone's credit report requires written permission from that individual. If you are a lender, a company that deals with issuing credit or insurance or need it for employment purposes you can also obtain the reports.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act "FCRA" is the law that pertains to the financial matters of others. This federal statute does allow a business to pull a credit report for an individual or a business in certain situations, the key phrase here being "certain situations". Use this link to view the FCRA, but I warn you that is an 86 page PDF and is not easy reading.

Bottom line: OK to pull if you have a written release from the consumer, for credit, employment or insurance purposes. OK to pull if you have a judgment or a court ordered document against the consumer.

If you need to locate someone's employer for a process server or to garnish wages you don't need a credit report. You can simply hire an investigator to conduct a Place of Employment "POE" search.

Social Security Number Fraud Q & A

We receive a lot of questions about Social Security Number Fraud which is often tied to Identity theft.

One of the most recent Questions was:

How would someone determine if a person who is currently using a valid Social Security number is actually the person the number was issued to, and is not just using a valid number in a fraudulent manner?

Say for example: Person “A” has a valid social security number and person “B” lists the number on their employment records as their social security number. Your Free SSN verification would show the number is actually valid but the number would be being used in a fraudulent manner.

Our Answer was:

Yes, a Free SSN verification would most likely show the SSN was valid. The only way to figure out if it's being used fraudulently is by conducting one of a few professional investigator assisted searches. If you are an employer checking on a current or former W-2 employee you could use the SSNVS system from the SSA.gov.

Otherwise, we would recommend one of the following four searches.

Any one of these investigator conducted searches often reveals all the names reporting the SSN with the address history.

The amount of information provided by these different reports vary, however most of them typically include dates the address information was reported to the various bureaus and reporting agencies.

This would give you a clue as to who actually established the SSN first. Typically the person who was issued the number first establishes it first (establishing credit, utilities, etc).

Sometimes immigrants who have established themselves (went thru the process of getting a work permit or visa) and obtained a SSN so they can work legally share the number with relatives or friends.

Sometimes a loan application is completed using a slightly different name or a variation of the name the SSN was actually issued to. Even if the loan is turned down for credit the name is actually reported in the credit bureau records. This establishes a new or additional name attached to the SSN.

It can sometimes be difficult to know who the actual number was issued too. If you are an employer as registered with the IRS and need to verify current or former employees (only for wage reporting [Form W-2] purposes) you may use the Social Security Number Verification Service (SSNVS) found on the SSA.gov web site.

If you not an employer or you are trying to verify a prospective employee or other individual (independent contractor or any other 1099 type of employee) you would need to use a third party investigation service and still need to abide by FCRA and other employment laws.

Are you considering buying something on eBay but afraid of getting ripped off? Well, you're not alone. There are millions of eBay users and the scammers and fraudsters abound. If you’re considering a sizable purchase (a few hundred dollars or more) for collectibles or a vehicle perhaps, it’s always a great idea to do your homework (background check) and research the seller.

About 3 years ago I purchased a medium priced SUV from an eBay seller. Here are the steps I took to ensure I was dealing with a reputable seller.

Reviewed all feedback from buyers
Made sure seller had sold vehicles previously (or at least sold other large ticket items).
If it was the sellers first vehicle (everybody has to have a first) make sure the seller had a “Me” page posted on eBay and/or listed all personal information in the auction.
When you have nothing to hide and are a stand up citizen or reputable business you should be willing to have your profile be public, especially if you’re asking someone to spending $1,000 or more and you are basically doing business with strangers. [I sell things on eBay and I have an about me page. I’m easy to find and verify.]
If the seller does not have any information posted on the auction about who they are, send a message to them using the eBay system.
Tell the seller you are interested in the item and ask them to provide their name and contact phone number. This is a very basic request.
If someone is selling a laptop or other piece of expensive equipment, or a high ticket electronic device, or a vehicle and they are not a full time eBay business they should provide their name and phone number. If they are a full time eBay business, their auction should list their business name and address or phone number.

If the auction you are interested in does not have name or contact info and you ask the seller for their name and phone (just send a simple message that says:
“Hi, I’m [insert your name] and my eBay name is [xxxx]. I am interested in bidding on your [describe item and include auction number].
Before I place a bid on such an expensive item I like to know who I am doing business with. If you would be so kind as to reply to this message with your contact information (name and phone number) I would like to speak with you for my peace of mind.
Once we speak I will feel more comfortable bidding on your item. If you prefer to call me, please do so at [add your phone number]. The best time to reach me is [enter day and time]. Sincerely, [your name].

This simple message may save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars as well as the anxiety and time of dealing with eBay fraud.

There are thousands of thousands of honest sellers on eBay, both businesses and individuals. You just have to make sure you’re dealing with one of them, because there are also thousands of scammers too.

If you do not get a response from the seller from your request, please don’t bid on that item. There are plenty of legitimate auctions and sellers that are more than happy to speak with potential customers.

Have you ever heard of a business that does not want to speak to their potential customers? Well, okay, some of our competitors don’t post phone numbers or contact info, but you probably wouldn’t want to do business with them either.

I successfully heard from the seller and he provided his name and cell phone number. Once I had his name and cell number I requested a reverse cell phone number lookup to be sure this was actually his cell number and obtained the address associated with it.

Once I had his name and address and was comfortable with the conversation we had and was pretty sure I was going to bid on the vehicle, there were a number of things I could request to put my mind at ease even more.

I actually requested a few things including a complete background check (only $67) and a Financial Due Diligence report ($57). Since he claimed to be a business, I had a Business Background Check done too. After all, a vehicle purchase can be in the tens of thousands, and I was required to send a cashiers check for the vehicle. So for less than $250 I assured my check was safe and that I was fairly confident I would get the vehicle I paid for.

This method has been successful for several of my friends, family members and other bestpeoplesearch customers who successful purchased very nice vehicles at substantial savings from eBay motors sellers.

If you've already been ripped off and have lost your money, there are way to try and track down the fraudster.

First thing is to contact the police in the town where you mailed your check (if you paid by Paypal or credit card, file a fraud report). You can also contact the secret service (they are the agency that deals with Internet fraud).

Aside from that, you can try and track down the thief yourself (try an email trace if you have an email from them), then notify the authorities that you've found the thief and need help apprehending them.

Answers:

In short, yes you can Secretly verify if SSN is legal and it is confidential. It's not necessary to secretly verify SSN information. If you are an employer just trying to find out if someone is providing a valid SSN you can call the SSA or use our system or both. You should not rely on one system and you can not make employment decisions based on the information you receive from our web site. Employers much abide by current laws such as GLB, FCRA and any others that affect your industry. Consult an HR or legal professional for further advise.

It is not necessary to conduct a separate death records search. If you use our free SSN verification system and know the SSN we will do a free death records search for you at the same time we check to see if the SSN is valid. If a death record is found we will provide the date of death or whatever if located.
Um, sorry, but no. A full background check requires a professional to uncover all the necessary information. You can obtain a comprehensive background check from one of our investigators it's just not a free background search by SSN.
Well, if you provide the SSN (no name or anything else), our system will check to see if the social security number is a valid number or not. If it is, the system will provide you with the state that issued that number (in the future we hope to provide an approximate year as well). Some of the responses can be "Valid" or "Active", which means the SSN has likely been issued by the state reported, and it has not been reported to the Social Security Death Index. If the SSN report comes back as "not valid" the most likely explanation is that the number you entered is not a legitimate SSN or the number has yet to be issued. If the free SSN report comes back as "NOT active" the SSN was most likely found in the Social Security Death Index and the report should include the approx date of death if available.

A Long Question: Can you please provide an explanation of how your free SSN verification works. We need to make certain that the information you provide is credible and reliable. Please provide more information about how the system works and the resources that are used to verify the information.

Trace an Email Address - Reverse Email Lookup

Have you ever received an email from someone and really wanted to know sent it. I'm not talking about finding out who sends you spam or junk mail. I'm talking about a harrassing, threatening, or suspicious email; or maybe even an email you found on your spouses computer (you know, the one he or she didn't want you to read).

Until now there really wasn't an effective method for identifing the individuals behind these email addresses.
