A number of cases are found where bird owners brutally neglected their pet birds by sticking them in bird cages that were far too small and keeping them locked in at all times. Unfortunately this is abuse and if you intend to buy a pet bird for this purpose we advise you to re-consider.Naturally, smaller birds like finches and canaries are harder to release just for the sake of it and if their cage is big enough and they have ample room to fly around it is ok to keep them locked away. But even then they should be fed a nutritious bird diet and given save bird toys to play with.

Your bird will usually be healthy if she is properly fed, gets plenty of exercise, has necessary vaccinations and is well cared for. When your bird first arrives home, you should schedule an appointment with your avian veterinarian as soon as possible to check her health and get the necessary vaccinations she may need.

Although parasites are uncommon in domestically raised birds, external parasites are more common in birds than internal ones and usually include various species of mites. Regular grooming of your bird is important for a number of reasons including the chance it gives you to check your bird for signs of external parasites. You will spend many hours taking care of your bird from her youth through her older years. In the first stages, you will spend a lot of time keeping her out of trouble and starting her out on a healthy routine. In later years, you will be working on keeping her healthy.

Items to keep handy include:

A bird bath or spray bottle to help your bird keep herself clean and free of parasites

A cuttlefish bone to help keep her bill trimmed and to provide calcium

A mineral block to help keep her bill trimmed and provide the minerals she needs

Vitamin and mineral supplements and specialty foods in case your bird doesn’t get all her essential nutrients in her normal diet

Bird nail clippers to keep nails properly trimmed (take her to a vet for this until you have been properly trained)

First-aid supplies in case of accidents

Tweezers or needle-nose pliers for the removal of blood feathers if one is accidentally cut or broken and a blood-stopping product in case you cut into the quick when trimming her nails.

Always remember that at the first sign of any health problem, you should immediately call your avian veterinarian. If an appointment is not needed, they can tell you what steps you need to take to keep your pet healthy.

The origin of aquarium keeping can be traced back to thousands of years before. Ancient Sumerians kept fish in artificial ponds almost 4500 years ago; even the ancient Romans and Chinese people had the same hobby meant for entertainment. In numerous ancient cultures, fish was considered to be sacred for their beauty and agility. Even today, we love keeping aquariums, wondering regarding the source from where an amazing aquarium can be purchased.

I have noticed that when some people start out with a new aquarium they really don’t take into mind that a little research is necessary to maintain a clean tank and keep healthy fish. I was one of those people who thought it just involved setting up the tank and throwing the fish in and that was it. However, you will find from experience that keeping fish shouldn’t be taken lightly and I believe it is important to have some good fish advice before starting out or even while maintaining your fish aquariums.

I’d have to say the thing that disgusts me the most is some people really don’t look at keeping fish seriously. If you screw up, they can be replaced. If they suffer, they are just fish. But in my opinion, it is important to know how to maintain a healthy tank and how to care for the fish. They are a pet and shouldn’t be mistreated as with any type of animal.

This is why I thought it might be nice to offer some of my own tips that I have gained through knowledge and experience with keeping tropical fish.

5 Tips For Setting Up Your First Aquarium:

1. Perform regular maintenance on your filter to keep it clean

2. Properly treat all tap water before adding it to your aquarium

3. Rapid pH changes stress fish. Keep the pH of your aquarium’s water stable

4. Select fish that are native to waters having similar chemical properties (pH and GH) to your local tap water

5. Choose the fish to fit your aquarium: A fish needs enough space to swim freely, but the size of the aquarium and the temperature of the water also affect oxygen content and will determine the number of fish that you can held. lower oxygen levels mean fewer fish. The depth of the aquarium is not relevant to the oxygen content calculations; it is the surface area of the water that is important. Coldwater and all marine fishes consume proportionally more oxygen than their fellows freshwater fishes.

The winter season can be a dangerous time for your pets and they need special care and attention during this time. Firstly, ensure that if your pet sleeps outside the house, that he/she has a warm spot to sleep in. Pets can succumb to very cold weather and risk catching a chill. Ensure that your dogs kennel does not bear the onslaught of the wind and faces against it. If your dogs kennel is just small enough to give him/her space to get up, turn and lie down, then it is likely to be warm in the winter.

Secondly, ensure that your pet is drinking adequate fluids and is eating a nourishing meal as the cold could lead to dehydration. Give your dog or cat a warm drinking bowl with water as frequently as possible. Thirdly, your pet could be suffering from dry skin on account of the dry air during winter. One effective way to solve this problem is to brush frequently, try an oatmeal shampoo or provide your pet with fatty acid supplements. Fourth, ensure that your parked car does not have any cats or other animals that are sleeping under it. The engines warmth attracts many animals and you should be careful to avoid a fateful accident.

Fifth, certain kinds of anti freeze chemicals used on pavements and in cars can lead to fatal consequences for your pet. Pets can be poisoned to death by such chemicals and you should keep them safe by practicing washing of paws after a trip outdoors. Sixth, your pet could injure his/her tongue by getting it stuck on a metal bucket or bowl in extremely cold weather. To avoid this, in the winter, switch to a plastic or ceramic bowl to minimize the threat to your pet. Seventh, pets face a serious danger from frostbite and so you should ensure that they dont retain any snow on their fur after returning from a trip outside.

Eighth, ensure that your pets stay indoors if their coats are not too thick or if they are not used to temperatures that are too cold. A pet can experience hypothermia if exposed to very cold weather and if left unprotected. Ninth, get yourself a mobile space heater that has an automatic shut off function if tipped over. Pets can start a fire at home if left unattended with a mobile space heater. Lastly, dogs tend to go in search of warm places in the winter and are thus in danger of getting lost and you should thus keep a close watch on them.

Tips for your Pet Care:

If one owns a small puppy or an older dog, try to keep him inside, so as to provide protection from cold, as they are very sensitive towards weather. For grown ups limit the time of keeping dog outside in cold air.

Winter is a time for great fun and distress. But consider buying booties for your dog when he walks on snow or ice. It will provide him little warmth.

While it’s respectable to want to give a pet a home during the holidays, the unfortunate fact remains that many pets are returned to animal shelters and humane societies after the novelty of a new pet wears off. Trupanion, North America’s fastest growing pet health insurance company, has released a list of tips to help new pet owners keep their pets.

1. Expect a Transition Period:

Whether a pet comes from a breeder or a shelter, there will be a transition period where the new pet is adjusting to its new life. This can take anywhere from a couple weeks to a few months, and even longer when in the midst of the holiday season. While this period can be frustrating, it is normal. Give the pet time to adjust before assuming there are life-long behavioral problems.

2. Expect Some Accidents:

Even if the pet is guaranteed to be potty trained, there will be some accidents during the transition period. The pet needs to figure out its new surroundings and the appropriate places to relieve itself.

3. Get to Know Your Breed:

Research your dog or cat’s breed. While not every Boston terrier is going to be the same, there are certain personality traits and health concerns that are inherit in the breed. Preparing for these characteristics will make you much better prepared to deal with them when they present themselves.

4. Purchase Chew Toys/Scratching Posts:

Dogs tend to chew and cats tend to scratch. In order to help save your furniture, shoes, and other belongings, give you pet another way to do what it loves.

5. Purchase Other Necessities:

Being prepared with food, treats, dishes, beds, toys, leashes, collars, and other necessities will save a lot of headache moving forward.

6. Join Groups:

Building a community around your pet’s species and/or breed can help you enjoy your pet and will give you a group of people to talk to about behavior or health issues.

7. Develop a Relationship with a Veterinarian:

It’s important to choose a veterinarian you trust and who understands you and your pet’s needs. Do some research on veterinarians in your area and elicit advice from your pet community. Having a professional to turn to when something goes wrong will save you a lot of frustration.

8. Prepare for the Unexpected:

No matter how much you educate and prepare yourself, and try to protect your pet, the unexpected can always happen. Make sure to place an I.D. tag on your pet’s collar with the pet’s name and your phone number clearly visible in case your pet gets lost. Also, invest in pet insurance to help protect you against high veterinary bills associated with accidents and illnesses.

“Pet ownership can be a wonderful thing if you are prepared for the responsibility,” said Darren DeFeo, Senior Vice President of E-Commerce at Trupanion. “We hope these tips will help new pet owners navigate through the ups and downs of owning a pet. This facility is soon to be implemented in various countries including INDIA…

Unlike Humans, Cat’s bad breath issue is also an alarming and stinky one: it tends to be caused by the activities of bacteria in the mouth that break down proteins and release sulphur compounds into the air. Sulphur smells bad, so breath that contains sulphur compounds smells bad also. In cats, the bacteria that cause the problem tend to be associated with a build up of tartar on the teeth. Tartar is a coating composed of food particles, bacteria, and minerals.

To cure cat bad breath, it’s helpful to try to remove the tartar that has built upon the cat’s teeth. Some pet foods are formulated to help reduce tartar by
producing mechanical friction that scrapes tartar off, or by including an enzyme
that helps to dissolve it. Pet treats are also commonly marketed as tartar
fighters in one way or another. If the build up of tartar on the cat’s teeth is
extensive, it might be necessary to pay to have a professional cleaning. When the tartar is removed, the cat bad breath should go away.
Some people are able to clean their cat’s teeth at home. Animal toothpastes are available in meat flavours – the mechanical brushing is important for removing tartar, but some of these toothpastes also contain enzymes that dissolve the tartar, so just getting it on the teeth regularly will help a bit to cure cat bad breath. Toothbrushes and tooth scrapers are also available. It is a fortunate cat owner whose cat will tolerate this kind of attention: start early with your cat to prevent the build up of tartar in the first place, and avoid cat bad breath later. Another approach is to try to decrease the number of bacteria in the cat’s mouth that are producing the bad smell. Just as chlorhexidine and other antibacterial are helpful for humans, these substances can be added to a pet’s water or sprayed directly on the teeth to combat cat bad breath. Alternative products are also available that treat the problem by fighting the bacteria. These remedies don’ t remove the tartar however, so they won’t permanently cure cat bad breath – a combination of a bacteria-fighting product, with a mechanical means of tartar removal might be the best approach.

Keep in mind that, like people, cats sometimes have an odour in the mouth that is not coming from the mouth: kidney and liver disease are two things that cause cat bad breath. Take your cat to your veterinarian if your cat has a consistent problem, so that a complete examination can be done. Even if the problem does originate in the mouth, treatment under the watchful eye of a veterinarian is important because problems in the mouth can lead to other serious health problems later.

Keeping your dog safe can sometimes seem like a daunting task. However, there are several simple things you can do to help ensure your dog’s safety.

Avoid Poisoning for Your Dog

One of the most common types of poisoning seen in dogs is with human prescription medications. Be sure to keep all of your family’s medications in an area where your dog cannot access them. Be careful when you or your family members are taking medications. A pill or pills dropped on the floor can quickly be snatched up by a curious dog.

Some medications are more dangerous than others. However, if your dog has ingested your medication by mistake, contact your veterinarian immediately. Be sure you have the telephone number for your veterinarian as well as the nearest emergency hospital easily available. You don’t want to be searching for telephone numbers in the middle of an emergency.

Another common type of poisoning is with toxic foods such as chocolate, grapes and raisins. Be careful what you feed your dog off of your table.

Always use both prescription and over-the-counter medications for dogs according to label directions. If the label is unclear, consult your veterinarian.

Plants are another common form of poisoning. Many common household and garden plants are toxic for dogs.

Keep Your Dog Safe in the Car

Riding in the car may be an enjoyable experience for your dog. You should always use a safety harness when your dog is riding in the car with you or place your dog in a carrier to keep him safe. Sudden unanticipated stops can send your dog flying and can cause injury.

Driving with car windows open can damage your dog’s sensitive eyes so caution is necessary when driving with your windows down or when driving a convertible. You can use Doggles® (googles made for dogs) to protect your dog’s eyes.

You may also want to consider using the automatic window locks on your car doors, if your car has them. These can prevent your dog from accidentally lowering a car window with a misplaced foot.

It is important never to leave your dog untended in your car. In warm weather, the temperature inside of a closed car can raise to dangerous levels within minutes, even with a window cracked.

Make Sure Your Dog is Easily Identified with a Collar and Tag

You will, of course, take every precaution to make sure your dog does not get lose and become lost. However, should the worst happen and your dog gets away accidentally, it is important that he can be easily identified. Your dog should be wearing a collar with an identification tag that includes your name, address and telephone so that you can be contacted easily if someone finds your dog.

Having a microchip implanted in your dog may be something to consider as well. Collars and tags can be removed or fall off. A microchip is permanent and will remain with your dog for his entire life. It will require a scanner to find and read the microchip but most shelters, pounds and rescues have scanners and use them regularly. Many veterinary hospitals also have scanners available.

If you do decide to microchip your dog, be certain to register the microchip so that your personal information is available and you can be contacted if your dog is located. Be sure to keep your information up to date as well in the event that you move to a new location or change your telephone number.

Are you planning to buy one for your youngster as a holiday or other gift? Do you want one just because they are cute or on impulse? Are you fostering one or taking one in out of the goodness of your heart?

Rabbits & Small Children

I do not advise buying a rabbit for a child under the age of 10. Chances are you will end up being responsible for the animal and if you do not take care of the rabbit, he will suffer the consequences of neglect. There are always exceptions to the rule, but usually children and pets do not mix.

Another point I’d like to make is that if you do bring a rabbit into the household where there are small children, you might wish to consider a larger one instead of a dwarf or other small rabbit. Larger animals are better able to tolerate the sometimes rough handling small children can provide. From my experience, larger rabbits are usually friendlier than smaller ones as well.

Remember that if you purchase a bunny for your child, you also need to take the responsibility of teaching your child to care for the rabbit properly.

Bunnies are Cute

But this is a poor reason for buying one. In the case of purchasing a baby bunny, the cuteness eventually wears off when they get older and many ‘owners’ neglect or abandon them. In my opinion, they simply go from being cute to beautiful, and deserve the care and attention of any beloved pet.

Please do not buy a rabbit on impulse. Too many people have done so, having no idea how to care for one properly, and the bunny suffers for it. Just because you may know how to care for a dog or cat that you own, does not mean you know as much about rabbits. The unfortunate thing about this type of situation is that usually the dog or cat takes precedent over the rabbit. The rabbit loses again. All pets require proper treatment and care.

Fostering A Bunny

It is admirable if you choose to do so, but make certain that you know what you are getting into or you may unintentionally lose the rabbit to one of the many possible maladies or malnutrition. There is a big difference in caring for a bunny by putting him into a cage and feeding pellets from a pet store and taking the extra step to learn everything you can concerning bunny care and using it. The education is a lifetime process (for the rabbit at least), but well worth it.

What should I do before bringing a rabbit home as a new caretaker?

Educational Resources such as Books and Websites.

Food and Equipment Sources.

Get to know your local veterinarian.

Bunny proof your home.

Consideration for current pets.

You will always feel better, if any new member comes to your house, and if that member is nothing but a small puppy, then you will be much happy and you must be very excited to start a new life with loyal friend and companion.

Puppies are just like new born babies, you have to take care of them a lot, and you also have to pay a lot of attention to them. This will create good things and bond between you and your puppy.

You will be having lot of work in the first week, after bringing your puppy home, but if you’ve done them carefully and on time, you will just go through it fine. Small puppies are very energetic and they like to play all the time. They also like lot of cuddling and they like to show their affection all the time. Just like little kids do, they will do lot of mischief and test your patients.

Puppy Proof your Home

Puppies chew everything which catches their attention, because they are very curious. So you should keep the harmful things away like chemicals, choking hazards and sharp objects. Give non toxic toys to your puppy and something big by which your puppy can swallow.

Proper Feeding and Grooming

Always feed your puppy with healthy puppy food, and give them clean drinking water regularly, make sure that your puppy drink hot water, if the puppy only drinks cold water, it will be become the habit, and the puppy will only drink cold water. Feed them right amount of dog food, and that also in enough quantity which fill their little stomachs.

Train Your Pup from the First Day

It is very important to train your puppy, and teach them obedience, rewarding is very effective in this matter. Give them good treat every time they do well.

Make your Pup Comfortable

Just like small Childs, puppies also need to take rest after they had a long day to play. Keep them well snuggled and comfortable on a small puppy bed, if you do this from the beginning, then he/she will not sleep on the floor or on your furniture.

Everyone loves to see the fishes in aquarium, when they swim and dive in clean and clear water. But some people Get confuse that do fish make a good pet?

Generally Fish are not cuddly, they do not lick like cats and dogs do. They also don’t bite or fetch. So if you need a pet for your child, you can definitely have a fish to your house because your child can touch and hold the fish.

Fish tanks and fish Bowls are available in all sizes. Like one gallon goldfish bowl to 200 gallons tank with their oxygen motor and beautiful lights. Fish tanks are now available in the wooden cases which had become the part of décor in our house. They usually come in long and oblong shape to fit in any space you find in your home.

Your child can also decorate the fish tank and keeping the necessary plants which are needed for the fish. They can learn the upkeep by keeping the tank clean; feed the fish daily on their time.

Fish do not need extra care if you wanted to go out for the holidays. They have weekly feeders that can dispense food gradually over the time while you are away from your house. Lights with timers are also available so when you are away, they will automatically put the light on and off and set the suitable temperature so that it can remain same for the weeks.

Fish makes a good pet for your children’s; they do not need any training. They don’t bite; they stay stable in their environment. Children’s should only feed and observe them.
