Now that spring is on it’s way we’re going to really get into shape so you can take this great lively energetic mix of house, electronica, club and electro tunes with you and get into the groove. Shake, shake shake and drop drop drop all the pounds you put on during the winter months. It will really get you shedding the excess weight – really try the mix in its entirety (1 hour and 15 minutes) during cardio for a week and you’ll see what I mean. You’ll be brand new person.

When I do these energetic mixes I make sure I mix in a pretty big variety so I include hits from the past like Pow Wow by Cory Daye. It’s an awesome disco classic that not a lot of folks know about but I absolutely love it.

I absolutely love Pjano by Eric Prydz. I think this guy does some really fun music including the Steve Winwood Valerie cover entitled Call On Me and the Pink Floyd cover of Another Brick In The Wall called Proper Eduction.

Nu Disco? Anything that sounds like disco but more modern. These tracks are all from the 90s to today so they have a more electronic and house sound to it but utilizing the disco elements and sounds.

This is a fun mix and great to have for a party or to drive fast to in a car. So could go both directions because you can chill to it to but it’s slightly more upbeat than your regular chill collection. I decided to put together this mix because I do love disco very much and I always love to hear new dance sounds that like to utilize the disco sound and this mix proves that disco is still alive and kicking!

Cafe Lounge

Well I do like my lounge chillout music and I do love listening to it at a cafe or a cafe setting. It’s nice to sip a hot cup of coffee – bite into a pastry with the jazzy, spacey ambiance in the background. Sound good right? Well I hope you think so with the mix I’ve put together below. Check it out.

We start things off with Les Courant d’ Air by Grand Tourism featuring the deep voice of Terry Callier. I’ve actualy heard the French version of this song sung by a French chick which I do like very much but I figured this version would be better for this mix. Terry actually does most of the song in English but he goes into it in French for a bit and out. It’s a nice one! Slowly by Max Sedgley is a smooth sexy slow groove track which gets things going in this mix. I don’t know much about Max Sedgely but I have this track in so many different compilations so I thought it would a good idea to include this in this mix. It works quite nice here.

Our next track is by Lambchop called Up With People. This is a slow, acoustic very late 60’s early 70’s track. Kind of sparkly choirish piece. It’s nice. It has a very slow and sunny feel to it. Perfect to sip coffee to.

Well this next track by Hooverphonic I pulled from a compilation called Recaffeinated Iced. Kind of what gave me the idea to do this mix but I’ve added my twist to this mix. I love Hooverphonic and I especially love 2Wicky from back in 1997. I’m sure you all remember that right? This one has a slight cinematic feel to it too but not quite like 2Wicky. Boy 1997 was the year of great Trip-Hop music. I remember it very well. What happened to those days?

I do love the idea of a remix if you don’t know already so I had to include a Cesaria Evora track from her Club Sodade remix album. This remix set it quite nice and her voice lends to the remix quite nicely. This piece is Petit Pays (Chateau Flight Remix) which is nicely remixed to a very mellow floating twilighty mix. Works quite nice here. Doris Days Blue Skies (Paul & Price Remix) works quite nice as well here. It’s got a nice laidback chill beat which compliments her big bright voice nicely. I like Keren Ann’s music especially her French tracks so I ran across this piece that she guests on. Bang Gang who I don’t know much about except for this track called It’s Alright which I’ve included on my DInner Party Music ‘08 playlist.

Dinner Party Music

I like the music and I especially love this piece it’s quite moody and slow at first and gets quite dramatic towards the middle but then gets mellow and slow again. Worth finding more out about Bang Gang as I do love both tracks.

Next couple of pieces are from very familiar faces – Moby and Goldfrapp are no strangers to this chill kind of music. So I’ve decided to include Dream About Me and Utopia one after another. Think fireplace and a nice conversation with this music in the background.

I really love the music of Aya off of the Naked Music label. Her style is very chill R&B – very stylish and sexy. This track Nobody Knows Me from her debut album Strange Flower works quite nicely here in this mix. It’s a very mellow beat and her silky smooth voice is quite catchy. Check her out if you haven’t.

You can see that I’ve decided to put all vocal tracks here but everyone of the pieces are very chill and downbeat – nothing too obnoxious because you’re relaxing at the cafe not energizing! It’s definitely not a workout mix! Enjoy.

Chocolate Kisses – Valentines Day Mix / Playlist for 2009

Here’s a romantic and sexy playlist that I’ve put together. More French themed tracks and pretty downtempo and chill which I think is perfect for Valentines Day right? Well this mix is perfect. I start and end with French speaking ladies doing a spoken word thing. I figured that would be perfect for this. The tracks contains jazzy, sexy cuts from folks like Gare Du Nord, Eva Be and Lemongrass. As well as some lo-fi mellow electronica from the likes of Sebastian Tellier and Ambrosia.

Winter Chill

For this mix I decided to pull some dark, moody ambient cuts. Music that sounds really cold. Chilled. I was looking for tunes that contained sound effects of thunder, lighting and rain within some of the tracks. That is the deal with Fyresvatn by Asle Bjørn. It’s mellow, ambient and full of light sound effects. It’s the thunder sound effects that really get the track going. It’s pretty chill and laidback. It definitely moves though until it winds down to rain and ocean waves sound effects. Which nicely fades us into the next track. Winter by Lippok & Morgenstern a mellow, acoustic ambient track. Really quiet. Perfect for cold evenings at home to chill to while you are wrapped in a blanket. I like the piano touches in it as well. It’s certainly really mellow. Up next we have the spacey piece called Angel Face by Aaron Jasinksi. It’s certainly got a nice downtempo, idm thing going for it with the clicks and pops of the electronics. It mixes well right after the Lippok & Morgenstern piece. Boards of Canada fitts perfectly in this mix. Their music is quite dark and cold. Very electronic. So the next piece is Left Side Drive. I lvoe this track as it’s quite thought provoking – makes me think for some reason and it’s a nice mood driven piece. I like the slow beats though. I absolutely love Boards of Canada. Their music is some of favorite music and they are perfect for chilling to in the background.

We then head into some vocal experimentation by M83. I like this piece as it’s mostly beatless but it’s cold and dark. It sounds like it’s lifted off of a movie soundtrack. It works well here right after Boards of Canada. Almost makes you want to cry – thinking you are watching this sad, sad story and one of the main character just died. Perfect track! Next up is a modern classical piano piece with operatic voices. Very dark and cold. It feels like we are in a different scene in this film and now our only main character is trying to put their life back together. This is quite the powerful piece. Works nice here right after M83.

Avia doing Why Should I Cry is somewhat quirky. I thought twice about putting this piece here and I almost didnt but thought I didn’t want to make this mix way too dark so this works here. It’s mello downtempo track and with some slow scratching effects throughout with the vocal repeating Why Should I Cry – Now You’re Gone. Works right?

L’amour Et la Violence the next track by Sebastian Tellier is pulled from his Sexuality album. I figured this mellow piano piece would work here. It’s mostly piano and then his vocals until it gets into this lo-fi seventies sounding piece – something that sounds like it’s lifter from A Clockwork Orange. I love it. I actually really love Sexuality – it’s an amazing album and the producer Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo from Daft Punk did an excellent job at the production of this album. It’s my favorite album from the last several months and I keep listening to it over and over. It’s perfection.

Lots of minimal vocal pieces in this mix with light, minimal beats added to the tracks and that’s just what Mangia Amore by Marsmobil is. It actually does get going and get fast but it’s still quite minimal and dark and cold.

With the next track I decided to get a little warmer. Forgotten Places by Alif Tree seemed like the perfect track to do that segue and it works. It’s jazzy downtempo with beautiful vintage sounding female vocals. I wanted to change the direction of the mix so this tune does that very well. I wanted to play some laidback, downtempo soulful house and Naked Music’s Pleasure Seeker was calling to fit in this mix so it was the perfect track to follow Pleasure Seeker. It’s sexy, cool yet warm with laidback vox. Romantic is another word that comes up when I hear this track.

The rest of the mix goes into some light acoustic fair with electronic background and ambient touches. This was the best decision to wind down the mix. I especially love U-Turn (Lili) by Aaron. It’s sounds like the Coldplay track that never was. And of course Dead To The World by Röyksopp is the perfect tune to end this mix with. Perfect mellow climax. Enjoy!

Deep South

I got the idea to do this mix because of the track Deep South by Layo & Bushwacka. It was pretty big trend in the late 90’s early 2000’s to add blues vocals to electronic music – think the Play album by Moby so several of the tracks on Deep South is similar in style to tracks from the Moby Play album. I decided not to include anything off of Play because we’ve heard it so much – and he had even licensed all the tracks to adds so figured we’d heard it enough. Sorry Moby!

So Deep South kicks off quite upbeat with Deep South. Then I slow things down quite a bit with the downtempo track Pablo’s Blues by Gary Du Nord. It’s quite a nice track. Very bluesy and and sad. Then we’re back to a little more upbeat soul sounding track by X-Press 2 which features the vocals of Kurt Wagner. This one’s a remix by Quantic Soul Orchestra.

Well I had to include Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. She sounds like she stepped off of the early 60s. Nice soul music – very retro!

Quantic’s Pushin’ On Featuring Alice Russel is another very retro sounding soul track. I love this. Amy Winehouse, you can retire now. This is the real retro music!!

St. Germain’s My Mama Said is a very jazzy blues track. I really do love St. Germain and his music was so ahead of it’s time when he released his first album back in 1992 I believe. Chocolate Elvis by Tosca is a dark moody downtempo track that fits here nicely also – it’s a bit experimental for this mix but things by now have slowed down and we’re in a dark gritty jazz club in some sketchy part of town. So this fits quite nice!

I end the mix with Right On 4 The Darkness. WOW! What can I say about this track?? I love this the original and the remix of it. I think it’s one of my all time favorite pieces of music ever created. If you haven’t heard it well it’s time. It’s awesome!
