PHP Lesson 5: Functions (Building Reusable Code Blocks)

Welcome back! As your programs grow, you'll find yourself performing the same tasks repeatedly (e.g., calculating sales tax, validating a user's input, or formatting a date). Functions allow you to bundle these tasks into a single, reusable unit, avoiding repetition.

1. What is a Function?

A function is a block of code written to perform a specific task. Once defined, you can execute that code block anytime and anywhere in your program simply by calling the function's name.

2. Defining Your Own Function

In PHP, you define a function using the function keyword, followed by the function's name and parentheses ().

3. Parameters and Arguments

4. Returning Values

Most functions don't just echo output; they process data and give a result back to the code that called them. This is done using the return keyword.

When PHP hits the return statement, the function immediately stops execution, and the specified value is sent back.

5. Built-in PHP Functions

Before writing your own function, always check if PHP already has a built-in one! PHP has thousands of functions for common tasks, which you've already seen examples of:

date(): Formats the current date and time (Lesson 1).
count(): Returns the number of elements in an array.
strlen(): Returns the length of a string.
strtoupper() / strtolower(): Converts a string to uppercase/lowercase.

PHP Lesson 4: Control Structures (Decision Making and Loops)

Welcome back! So far, our code executes line by line from top to bottom. Control structures allow us to change that flow, enabling our programs to be smart, responsive, and efficient.

1. Decision Making: The `if...else` Statement

The if...else structure executes a block of code only if a specified condition is TRUE.

The Basic Structure

Comparison Operators

To create conditions within the if statement, you use comparison operators:

2. Looping: Automating Repetitive Tasks

Loops are used to execute a block of code repeatedly as long as a certain condition is met. This is crucial for tasks like processing all items in an array or showing a list of database results.

The `for` Loop

The for loop is ideal when you know exactly how many times you want the loop to run.

Structure of a for loop:

Initialization: Set the counter's starting value (e.g., $i = 0).
Condition: The loop continues as long as this condition is TRUE (e.g., $i < 5).
Increment/Decrement: How the counter changes after each loop iteration (e.g., $i++ means add 1).

The foreach loop is specifically designed to easily iterate (loop through) every item in an array. This is by far the most commonly used loop in PHP development.

3. Combining Structures

You will often use loops and decision structures together. For example, using a foreach loop to check a condition for every item in a list:

PHP Lesson 3: Arrays (Storing Collections of Data)

Welcome back! So far, we've used variables to store single pieces of data. But what if you need to store a list of items, like user names, product codes, or days of the week? That's where Arrays come in.

An Array is a special variable that can hold more than one value at a time.

1. Indexed Arrays (The Standard List)

The simplest form of an array is an indexed array. In this type, each item is stored at a position marked by a number, starting from zero (0).

Creating an Indexed Array

You can create an indexed array using the array() constructor or the modern, short-hand bracket syntax ([]).

Accessing Array Elements

2. Associative Arrays (Key-Value Pairs)

Instead of using numeric indices (0, 1, 2, etc.), associative arrays use descriptive names or keys to access values. This is perfect for storing data where the key has meaning (like a database record).

We use the arrow operator (=>) to assign a value to a specific key.

The echo command only works with simple strings or numbers. If you try to echo an array, you'll get an error message. To see the structure and contents of an array while debugging, use the powerful print_r() function:

PHP Lesson 2: Variables and Data Types (The Building Blocks)

Welcome back! In Lesson 1, you learned how to display simple text using echo. Now, we're going to learn how to store, manipulate, and reuse information using Variables.

📦 Understanding Variables

A variable is essentially a container or a named memory location used to store data. Think of it like a label on a box: the label is the variable name, and whatever is inside the box is the value.

In PHP, a few key rules apply to variables:

Starts with $: All variable names must begin with a dollar sign ($).
Assignment: We use the equals sign (=) to assign a value to a variable.
Naming Rules: Variable names must start with a letter or an underscore (_) and can only contain alphanumeric characters and underscores (A-z, 0-9, and _). They are case-sensitive (e.g., $name is different from $Name).

Basic Variable Declaration

Here is how you declare a variable and then use the echo statement to display its value:

A Data Type defines the kind of data a variable can hold (e.g., a number, text, a true/false value). PHP is a loosely typed language, meaning you don't have to explicitly tell PHP what data type a variable will be—it figures it out automatically!

Here are the most common data types you'll use:

PHP Lesson 1: Your First Steps into Server-Side Programming

Welcome to the start of your journey into PHP! If you're looking to build dynamic, interactive websites, PHP is one of the most powerful and widely used languages on the internet.

❓ What is PHP?

PHP stands for Hypertext Preprocessor.

It's a server-side scripting language. This means the code runs on the web server (the computer that hosts your website) before anything is sent to the user's browser.
It's primarily used for web development to generate dynamic content, manage databases, track user sessions, and much more.
It is embedded directly into HTML. You can mix PHP code with your standard HTML markup.

🌐 How PHP Works (Client vs. Server)

To understand PHP, you need to know the difference between the client (the user's web browser) and the server (where your website files live).

Request: A user types your website address into their browser (the Client).
Processing: The Client sends a request to the Server. The Server finds the requested PHP file.
Execution: The Server runs (executes) all the PHP code within that file.
Response: The Server takes the output generated by the PHP (usually HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) and sends it back to the Client.
Display: The Client's browser receives the standard HTML/CSS/JS and displays the final web page.

The important takeaway: The user never sees your raw PHP code—they only see the result (the HTML) it creates.

🛠️ Getting Started: What You Need

To run PHP code on your own computer, you need a local server environment. The easiest way to get this is by installing a WAMP (Windows), MAMP (Mac), or XAMPP (Cross-platform) package.

🧠 Key Concepts & Rules

Statements End with a Semicolon: Every instruction (statement) in PHP must end with a semicolon (;). This is a common source of beginner errors!

Case Sensitivity: PHP is mostly case-sensitive, especially for variable names (we'll cover these next time!).
Comments: You can add notes to your code that the server ignores. Use a double-slash (//) for single-line comments or /* */ for multi-line blocks.
