The Emergence of Flat UI

Over the past few months Flat design has been picking up steam online. Every day a new article comes out showing a new set of flat UI elements. Even here at bestpsdfreebies.com we’ve jumped on board flat design and released a couple flat UI freebies including our 6 Flat Blue Icons and our Email Icons.

So What Exactly is Flat UI

Flat design leaves behind drop shadows, subtle textures and gradients in favour of solid colours, clean layouts and sharp typography. I would have to say Windows 8 was the starting point to this trend when we were introduced to their metro style UI.

Flat Designed WordPress Templates

This doesn’t mean that without drop shadows and gradients designs are boring, quite the opposite. Here are a couple great flat design WordPress templates that have become very popular.

Rumors are floating around that iOS 7 is going with a more flat designed UI. Here is an article I found showcasing possible designs of iOS 7. Based on the comments I don’t think many hardcore Apple junkies are digging it:

Where to Get Started with Flat Design

There are a few great resources you can turn to if you want to get started with flat UI design. One of the best is the free user interface kit released by designmodo. The kit contains PSD files of buttons, inputs, selects, checkboxes, tags, menus, progress bars, sliders and navigation elements, as well as color swatches and SVG glyphs.

You can also find great examples of flat UI on Pinterest by searching “flat design”. Here’s a quick link to get you started.
