Anyone on my RSS list will know that I stopped posting. What you don’t know is that I have been working on dozens of other sites. I have figured out the recipe for making cash and it is has nothing to do with blogging.

Incidentally I have realized that it is possible to make money while blogging if you pick the right niche and plan it properly. You plan it as a business first then do the blogging stuff second.

That’s how to make money with a blog.

No matter how good your content is you need the business mindset when creating the site. That’s why less than 1% of us actually make money with our sites.

A lot of it is SEO. Understanding the theory of how Google thinks and exactly how the algorithm works will give you a huge leg up in an ultra competitive niche. Here’s the thing–it’s not even necessary.

Stop sweating the intracacies of SEO. All you should worry about is link building. Rank #1 for something, make some money and then start worrying about how to repeat it with a big money site.

You need to do the small stuff and move on up to your own youtube-sized project. The smaller stuff will also help bankroll the bigger stuff.

Blogging - Not the same as making real money

Sorry about the caps but I hope you understand the urgency here.

A lot of people want to know about Jon Leger’s 3waylinks.net. It is a link network that helps you build large amounts of low quality links. In exchange your sites must link out with dozens and dozens of low quality links.

Does 3waylinks.net work?

Yes, it does. I’ve seen people take over niches with very little competition by using 3waylinks.net.

Do I use 3waylinks.net?

Of course not. And I won’t recommend it to anyone looking to build links. When it comes to getting links, you need to stay away from anything that leaves a big sign on your head asking to be slapped by google (ie. reduce your footprint).

3waylinks.net is inferior to connect content because you need to use their script for linking out, which means it’s extremely obvious you are part of their network…that’s a nice way to get the Google Slap quicktime.

Connect Content allows you to get backlinks more discretely and even in a more white-hat way. Since all the links you get are from related posts there is no “unrelated link building”.

Most of you have heard this already. You’ve read this information before and it’s nothing new to most of you. You know that you need to rank at the top of the search engines to get traffic. You know you need this targetted traffic to make money.

You even know how to get to the top of the search engine rankings. You’ve read over and over that it’s all about seo and links. You even know that you need the right kind of links–links that use the anchor text of the term you are trying to rank for and several variants.

So if you’re trying to rank for search engine optimization then you will get links with the text seo, search engine optimization, seo strategies and many more long tails.

Put here’s where you get stuck–where in the hell do you get these links? Well that’s a good question. There are several places where you can score good links which allow you to control the anchor text, however most if not all are frowned upon heavily by Google. Therefore you won’t see me linking out to any services, and for that reason I also need to add the disclaimer that you should use these at your own risk and know that they go against the Google TOS.

I’ve seen 3waylinks in action and I know it works. I should warn that because you need to link to sites, it puts you at danger as well and for that reason I don’t use it. However, it is a good way to score dozens of low quality perfectly optimized links. Even better is 1waylinks, which is very cheap, gives you fewer links but gets the job done.

Private links works are a step up because they have blogs with some juice, so you get your hands on pagerank 1-3 links (although over time these turn into PR 0 links). The next thing is an article marketer that gets your spun articles all over the net, more low quality backlinks.

The next method is building your own sites to link to yourself, high pagerank and permanent but require a load of work.

Getting search engine rankings

In recent weeks, one of my proficient BANS stores got a pretty hard Google slap. There are some things going around on the regular mmo blogs so I wanted to take a second out of my usual program of helping you learn seo to instead talk a little bit about BANS stores. If you’ve had trouble with your BANS stores and seen your search engine rankings fall, then here are some steps you might want to take:

1. Evaluate your rankings: Did you get a Google slap or were you removed from the listings? Going from page 1 to page 3 could just be the algorithm deciding you built links too quickly. Having a certain page removed from the index, or your site altogether gone from the rankings is a sign you were classified as spam.
2. Fix any keyword stuffing you may have. One of the strategies people employ with BANS is to keyword stuff their posts like crazy. Well, this is a nice and easy way to get classified as spam in Google’s eyes. Tone your stuffing down.
3. Go to Google Webmaster Tools and file a reinclusion request. Apologize for your keyword stuffing and wait anywhere from one to three weeks. Google receives so many requests that it will be a while before you’re included.
4. Forget about it! You will need to wait to see if anything happens so take the time to work on your other websites.
5. If all else fails: If up to a month later your site is still in the dog house, you’ll need to get creative. Try adding a contact page, an about page and a privacy policy. Then stick a blog on your BANS site and point some links to the BANS pages. This is a nice way to get noticed by the search engines.

In my experience, search engines are all about what’s best for the user. Yes, building links is the most important aspect of search engine rankings, but be smart–if your site delivers the best experience for the user then you’ll never have to worry about a manual google spam label. My review on the home cash course fills a need for those looking for this product. It has audio and a whole lot of text. A BANS site doesn’t need all that flash to fulfill a search engine visitor’s need–the ebay program does that for us.

Hopefully you can employ these search engines strategies to get your BANS stores back on track.

Search Engines and BANS

Google pagerank

There are actually two definitions of pagerank, but for now we’re going to focus on the pagerank most webmasters of aware of. Earlier on I wrote about search engine optimization links and how search engines use links to determine which websites are important. Google, as king of the search engines, decided to make the importance of a page clearly visible, by creating numerical ranking system.

If you have the google toolbar installed, you can quickly see the pagerank of any page at the top of your browser and should look like this:

Now what is pagerank? It is an easy to view, numerical form of measuring a page’s importance as viewed by Google (only Google, not other search engines).

Note that every webpage (ie. every page with a different URL) has its own pagerank. So even if your homepage is a pagerank 3, your posts may have little or no pagerank (although we’ll go into this later).

The maxiumum pagerank (or PR) any website can have is 10. Now as far as websites go, anything that has a pagerank 5 or above is considered to be a strong webpage. Achieving a high pagerank gets exponentially harder as the scale goes up.

That is, it is very easy to gain pageranks 1-3, harder to get a pagerank of 4-5 and becomes much more difficult to get anything 6+.

Pagerank updates

Now the numerical value Google has for each webpage constantly changes. However, in order to stop webmasters from gaming the system, Google only updates the pagerank bar every so often (they like to keep us guessing so updates range from a few months to over a year).

That means your website could have a much higher or lower pagerank than is currently displayed, but the toolbar may not have yet updated.

Note: The most recent update was the end of July 2008, so your pagerank is likely to be reflective of your website for at least a little while.

One last note about pagerank: Google differentiates between having a pagerank of 0 and being unlisted or banned. If the bar is white and empty, this means the page has a rank of 0. If the bar is grey, the page is unlisted by google or has been banned by google. Placing your mouse over the bar will show either the 0/10 rank or “No information available”.

Note: before you panic, all of your new pages will display as grey bar. Only after a PR update will your greybar pages show the pagerank they’ve earned - my home cash course review has a PR of 0.

Increase pagerank

Pagerank is huge in the webmaster community. It is what webmasters look at when they want to know how good your website is. Many people use pagerank to gauage how successful your site is (thats bogus btw), so learning how to increase pagerank is a priority for most webmasters.

This is how you get a higher pagerank: links. Remember that we said more links means you’re more important. Since pagerank measures importance, more links means higher pagerank.

One major thing I left until now was the quality of backlinks. Right now it sounds like its just a matter of quantity of links. This is completely false. When someone links to you, you gain a small amount of pagerank. How much you gain depends on the pagerank of the linking site. So if a pagerank 4 links to me, I’m getting a lot more pagerank then if a pagerank 1 linked to me (this is what we call Google Juice [OK, Google Juice is a little more complex, but we'll cover this further on]).

So to recap this: getting links from sites with high pagerank will help you get high pagerank. Additionally, you get increase your pagerank by limiting how many links you have on a page. Every page you link to is a page you’re giving your juice to. So if you have 50 links on your page, each page is getting very little juice. By this method, it sometimes is better to get a link from a low PR 1 or 2 page that has very few links than a PR 3 or 4 that has tons and tons of links.

*Note: I felt I should add in: Once your homepage gets a nice pagerank, you’ll be able to spread that across the site. All of your homepage links will automatically transfer pagerank to other posts that display on the homepage.

Either way, we get the highest possible pagerank by: getting links from high pagerank sites and having very few links on our pages.

If you want to link out and don’t want to lose any Juice, add the tag rel=”nofollow” inside the link. So the syntax looks like:

<a href=”WEBSITE URL” rel=”nofollow”>ANCHOR TEXT</a>. This is good for keeping your pagerank and is also good in case you want to keep a link for your visitors to click but don’t want to lose any juice.

Search engine rankings and pagerank

What does pagerank have to do with search engine rankings? Some webmasters seem to believe that having a high pagerank ensures that Google will rank you for whatever keyword you’d like. In some ways, it is true that having a higher pagerank increases search engine rankings.

That’s only because pagerank comes from links and the more links you have the more important Google thinks your page is.

However, the main factor in ranking is NOT the number of links you have. In addition to having high quality links, the anchor text of your links is extremely, extremely important. So when my friend Justin from SEO Zombie is trying to get ranked, it is important that I link to him using his keyword in the anchor text. He wrote an seo guide which is really a page with links to his old post.

Now he can choose the anchor text for all of the linked posts using this post, so he’s helping to increase the juice of all these individual posts.

By contrast, I have a friend who I will call BL. She writes a very funny and entertaining personal blog that has a pagerank of 4. Justin only has a pagerank of 2. But BL’s blog is unlikely to ever show up in the search engine rankings, because all her friends link to her using the keywords “BLs Blog”. Justin gains links with seo-related keywords, so he shows up in the search engine results for these terms.

BL’s friends give her more pagerank with their links, but Justin gets the right anchor text, which means he gets into the search engine rankings and THAT is where the money is.

Search engine rankings and keyword authority

Remember when I first baited Justin in I said that we were “in the perfect position to trade links”? You see, gaining links is not just about pagerank or anchor text, its also about keyword authority. This is the other meaning of Google Juice–getting this stuff means that Google starts to associate your keyword with your site.

So here’s what I mean: let say BL links to me with her blog which has a pagerank of 4. She even uses the anchor text search engine optimization and links to one of my posts in the middle of her post. If you haven’t caught on, this means the link is high PR, right anchor text and looks perfectly organic to Google or any search engine.

Now this will give me some juice for the term “search engine optimization” and any SEO keywords that stem from this. I will also get some pagerank from her link. However, Google takes into account the juice that the original website has. What this means is that BL’s link is NOT perfect.

Because she has no authority for any SEO keywords, the amount of authoirty that I get isn’t as great.

Authority is how you get high search engine rankings, NOT pagerank. So for me to get lots of search engine optimization authority, I need backlinks from sites that have built up authority for that keyword. Now, I’ll take any link I can get since a link coming to my page can never hurt me.

However, I’m going to try to get the perfectly optimized links for maximum SEO effect. Now back to Justin. The reason that I linked to him is that he too is targeting SEO related terms. This means that when we exchange links, we are also giving each other lots of authority for these keywords.

Note: Being an “authority site” and having authority for keywords are two completely different things and will be covered later.

Increase search engine rankings

So the basic question still remains: how do I increase my search engine rankings for my website? Well lets go over some of the basic search engine optimization you need to do:

1. You need to build links to your website. Your links should be coming with sites that have some pagerank (at least 1) and should have the keyword anchor text you want to get ranked for.

The fewer links that webpage has on it, the more juice this page is going to pass on to you.

Also make sure to get links coming from sites that have built up keyword authority for keywords related to yours (a later post will show you how to tell).

2. Limit the amount of outgoing links you have. If you are linking to irrelevent things on your site or someone else’s be sure to use the rel=”nofollow” tag.

3. Link internally to your own posts using desired keywords.

4. Make your links look organic by being in the middle of posts and to different pages of your site (not just your homepage).

5. Build links slowly, getting low PR links first and moving your way up to higher pagerank links (again, making your site look organic).

I think that’s enough for one post. My next post is going to be about search engines and content and a little experiment that I’m actually doing right now.

Search engine rankings and pagerank

First of all, I want to talk about an SEO challenge that started a while ago. The challenge was started by a web solutions company known as Busby. The name of the challenge? The Busby SEO challenge.

The rules are simple: whomever can rank the highest on Google for “Busby SEO Challenge” wins $5000. I noticed this contest going a while ago and having been paying attention since.

This is one of those rare opportunities where we get to see SEO at work. Please guys, use this opportunity to learn about getting to the top of search engine rankings.

Think about it–hundreds of webmasters are trying to optimize for a single term. Studying how the top 10 got their rankings is a great way to learn about search engine optimization FOR FREE!

You might be wondering why I didn’t decide to join in. Well there a few reasons:

1. Let’s be realistic here: I’d have to beat some of the best SEO experts out there–the odds of which are slim. To jump start your Busby SEO post, you’d be better off using a PR 5+ Authority site that will easily pass huge amounts of authority to your post. The only site that I have like that have nothing to do with SEO, which brings me to…
2. Google bait. This competition boils down to one thing: getting anchored backlinks with the term “Busby SEO Challenge”. This means everyone is calling in all the chips and using their entire link network to get links. To me, this rubbing Google bombing in Google’s face…not something I’d reccomend.

All SEO experts are calling in their chips right now, so it’s a good time to be giving out favours. What goes around comes around and there are plenty of big sites looking for perfect anchored links right now.

The reason I decided to blog about this now was that the webmaster of MyTradeDomain told me that he was participating in the Busby SEO Challenge. Well the interesting thing is that he started the contest late and has less backlinks than anyone else, but is still ranking in the top 10.

How does he do it? His website is a pagerank 5 authority, so his site is getting plenty of Google love.

Best search engine rankings

There is one thing I wanted to point out about the SEO challenge–most of the top sites are teams. That’s because getting to the top of search engine rankings is all about anchored links (as shown in my home cash course post)

5 people can get way more anchored text links than one, so why not pair up?

This is the point I’m trying to make–the real way to top the search engines is to build yourself a link network. Back when I was talking about search engines and links I baited Justin from SEO Zombie to this site. That was my first step in creating a link network.

All those at the top of the SEO challenge rankings have created a network of friends who understand SEO and will give each other perfect, keyword anchored backlinks.

This is exactly what you need to do.

Now I was going to talk a bit about my new project which shows people how to make extra money and the changes to the ebay partner network, but we’ll save that topic for another day.

But the blog wasn’t always this way. Not too long ago it was like thousands of other webmaster blogs–affiliate marketing reviews of products I never purchased, a mass of different posts about whatever I thought might help webmasters and making barely any money.

Now if you’re been following along with my articles on search engine optimization strategies then you’ll notice that right now all the posts are very basic.

Basic search engine optimization

There are a few reasons for starting with the most basic seo.

1. I’m looking to help seo newbies who know nothing about search engines
2. It helps clear up any basic misconceptions a lot of people have about search engines and search engine results
3. And most importantly, I need to slowly start to target my seo-related keywords

For the longest time this site has been about whatever I felt like writing about. That was my first big SEO mistake. If a search engine can’t get a good grip on what I’m all about, I’ll never rank for my keywords. So although I wanted to rank for “search engine optimization” I didn’t have a chance.

Optimizing your website

OK, let me start actually giving out some of the goods. There are some very basic SEO techniques to show Google and other robots what your site is all about. First off, if you’re running a wordpress blog, you can read my article on how to seo wordpress for your theme and/or blog. I’ll give you some time to read that quick list over.

Now back to what I was saying. I actually wanted to avoid giving out any real SEO tricks for a while. Mostly because you list all your greatest search engine practices and you’re all done. The problem most bloggers have is pacing themselves out.

To stop myself from doing this, I actually write these articles days or even weeks before they’re ever published. That way I can sit back and make sure Google has indexed my previous posts for a bit before I put out some fresh content (this is something else I’ll have to do another post about). I wrote the home cash course review way before I posted it.

I’ve gotten off-track, here are the goods:

SEO basics

1. Use a unique h1 tag on every page. This is really a theme thing (assuming we’re talking wordpress) and can be fixed if you read my 5 ways to SEO your blog post. Most bloggers don’t use any heading tags, which is a huge minus. Those tags were created to create big neon signs on your content for search engines that say “THIS IS IMPORTANT”.
2. Use a unique title tag. I’ve found that the title tag is imperative for getting ranked. SEO buffs might try to argue with me on this one, but I really couldn’t care. I was able to get one of my authority sites ranked on the first page of search results just by putting an extra keyword in the title tag.
3. Place all sidebar and any other duplicate content after your post. This is why I don’t use left hand sidebars, because they generally come before my unique content (although a smart coder can avoid that). The less duplicate content before your posts on each page, the easier it is for search engines to find your unique content.

Those are 3 very basic search engine optimization techinques. Some of you may already know all of them and some of you may have never heard of them. In any case, there will be other days for more advanced website optimization, but for now we’re helping the newbies.

Improving your search engine results

Back in my first post, what is search engine optimization I talked a little bit about trying to manipulate the search bots. Now by manipulating them I meant trying to get ourselves ranked for a certain keyword because we know it has a good payout or because it gets tons of traffic. Well there’s nothing wrong with that if we’re correctly targeted these keywords (you guessed it, a post for another day) but that’s not what I meant.

I made this mistake not too long ago…I had done my keyword research for my authority blog and found a perfect keyword–these were the visitors I wanted on my site. So I started laser targetting those keywords until I had optimized the site pretty well. Sure enough, I ended up ranked third or second on Google (damn Youtube videos) for this keyword. Now I had plenty of traffic coming in, but a ridiculously high bounce rate (bounce rate being visitors to who to your site and leave without looking at any other pages).

This was because I had decided that I wanted these visitors, but I hadn’t geared my content towards them. Instead I’d again written whatever came to my mind, just being careful to target my keyword enough to get ranked…not a bad way to beat the search engines but it didn’t end up helping my bottom line.

My point here is that many people will try to target a certain keyword and forget to match their content to that keyword. Now if you’re an authority (more on that later–I should really make a list) than you might be able to accomplish it.  If you’re not, it’ll make your life a hell of a lot harder.

Sometimes improving your search engine rankings is as easy as looking at your website name, target keywords and content. If these key things don’t all point to the same thing, you’re in trouble.

Search engine keywords

Let me clarify: your blog name, your target keywords and your content should all be closely related. Let’s take a look at my homepage. The blog name is search engine optimization. The keyword I’m targeting–obviously SEO related. Now the content should be extremely relevent to SEO, search engines, search rankings or SEO services. And if you look throughout this post and others, I think you’ll find that true.

If you can do this, you’ll naturally improve your search engine rankings and you’ll lower your bounce rate. You’ll also have more people staying to read your posts, which depending on your monetization method may be good or bad.

To recap this post: If you’re a SEO newbie apply those three techniques to everyone of your post pages. Read my post on optimizing your wordpress theme or just buy my wordpress theme. This is all ridiculously basic, but you’ve got to crawl before you can walk.
