Facebook is buying WhatsApp for $16 billion

Facebook has entered into an agreement to purchase WhatsApp, the massively popular messaging client, for $16 billion in cash and stock. A document filed with the SEC today confirms the huge purchase. As was the case with Instagram, the company says WhatsApp will continue to operate independently after the acquisition — separate from Facebook Messenger — but claims the deal "accelerates Facebook’s ability to bring connectivity and utility to the world." Facebook is also throwing in an extra $3 billion in restricted stock units that will go to WhatsApp’s employees; those will vest over a period of four years after the acquisition is finalized.

In a press release announcing the monumental buyout, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, "WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable." He also shared news of the deal on his personal Facebook page, saying, "WhatsApp will complement our existing chat and messaging services to provide new tools for our community." Over 450 million people use WhatsApp each month, according to statistics in the press release, with 70 percent of those users active on a given day. WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum will join Facebook’s board of directors as part of the deal, but his team will remain stationed in Mountain View, California.

"Doing this will give WhatsApp the flexibility to grow and expand, while giving me, Brian, and the rest of our team more time to focus on building a communications service that’s as fast, affordable and personal as possible," he said in a blog post. According to Kuam, users don't need to worry about ads "interrupting your communication." "There would have been no partnership between our two companies if we had to compromise on the core principles that will always define our company, our vision and our product," he said.

Update: In a call with investors following the deal, Zuckerberg said he proposed the purchase to Koum on Sunday, February 9th, with the two agreeing on a price a few days later. Zuckerberg also went into more detail on why Facebook will hang on to its existing chat services, which he views as something people use to send one another messages asynchronously instead of in real-time. "We think that those are two different use cases, and that the world needed both," he said.

Analysts also asked Koum and Zuckerberg whether the deal meant that ads were coming to WhatsApp. Koum responded to by saying the two companies were more focused on growing how many people were using the app over how money will be made off it.

Protect your Facebook Account From Hackers

Recently a friend-of-a-friend’s Facebook account was hacked. She realized that spam e-mails were sent from her account. Then a few days later I heard that another acquaintance experienced the same problem.

Here are some steps you can take if you believe your account has been compromised, along with some steps to prevent this from happening. Please share this with your Facebooking teens. A 2011 survey showed that 30% of teen’s accounts had been hacked – by a friend! So help them check their privacy and security settings on a regular basis.

What to do if your Facebook Account has been hacked

Go to https://www.facebook.com/hacked and follow the instructions on-screen. You’ll go through three steps:

Verify your account and change password. You’ll be asked to identify your account, change your password, and change the password associated with the e-mail account that you use for Facebook.
Review and fix anything the cybercriminal changed.
Unlock account.

How to prevent your Facebook Account from being hacked

Security settings are the key. So stop what you’re doing and print out this article. Then log into Facebook and update these settings.

From Account settings, click on Security. I recommend the following settings for the highest level of security.

1. Secure Browsing – enabled.

2. Login Notifications – enabled.

3. Login Approvals – enabled. This feature requires that you have a cell phone capable of receiving text messages. When enabled, you will receive a code via text message if your account is accessed from an unrecognized location.

This is important for teens. They may use computers at a friend’s house, the library, or other public locations. As an example, if you are logging in to Facebook from a computer in the library, you’ll be asked to enter in a code. You’ll receive the text message, know that it’s YOU using Facebook, and enter the code. If you receive the text message and you WERE NOT trying to log into Facebook, you’ll know there is a problem. And the hacker trying to get into your account will not have the code.

4. App Passwords – If you don’t have many apps associated with your Facebook account, you can probably leave this off. If you do enable login approvals as described above, and you do use apps such as Skype through Facebook, then you may want to set app passwords. You can read about this feature on Facebook Help and Inside Facebook.

5. Recognized Devices – if there is anything listed here that doesn’t look familiar, or the date is not recent, remove it.

6. Active Sessions – remove all except Current session.

As a last step, go to General Account settings and change your Facebook password. And finally, log out of Facebook when not in use.

Now with your Facebook account safe and secure, you can get back to important Facebook activities, such as post-election re-friending, without too much of a fear of hackers accessing your account.

New Processor to Bring High-End Features to Cheap Smartphones

The smartphone you buy this fall is going to be way better than the one in your pocket now — and it might even be cheaper, too. ARM, the company behind the chip technology in virtually every smartphone and tablet today, is launching a new kind of processor that brings today's high-end features to more affordable devices.

The new ARM Cortex-A17 design is kind of the 2014 version of the Cortex-A9 that's in chips like Nvidia's Tegra 3 (which powers devices such as the original Nexus 7 and Microsoft Surface) and Apple's A5 (which was in the iPhone 4S). ARM said the A17 is 60% more energy-efficient than the A9, meaning manufacturers who use it will be able to coax more features out of chips based on the A17 design.

First out of the gate is MediaTek, which is getting in on the ground floor with Cortex-A17. MediaTek chips power a large number of devices — roughly 250 million worldwide — but they have a relatively weak presence in the U.S., mainly because its business targets the low end. (If you bought a $50 Android phone someplace in India, chances are it has a MediaTek processor.)

MediaTek's A17-based MT6595 processor could be the company's first-class ticket to America. Far from a bare-bones piece of silicon, it's a full system-on-a-chip (SoC) design with eight cores that includes compatibility with LTE networks (Release 9), something the company's processors have been lacking until now.

The design includes high-end features such as the ability to handle 4K video, as well as support for 20-megapixel cameras and Quad HD phone displays. It's also able to connect to wearables via Bluetooth Smart and ANT+.

With the new chip, manufacturers will be able to offer devices with all the features of a current high-end phone that costs just $200 — unsubsidized, according to MediaTek. With more U.S. carriers signaling that phone subsidies may be ending (T-Mobile already got rid of them), a sudden influx of cheap, high-quality smartphones would be welcome news for consumers.

ARM said its new A17 architecture will be powering the majority of mid-range smartphones by 2015, with new chip designs from Nvidia, Broadcom, Samsung and others. Smart TVs, which ARM expects will number 140 million by next year, will need those kinds of chips, too.

For MediaTek, the new wave of chips represents an opportunity to break into the U.S. market in a big way. The company said it intends to bring even more American-friendly chip designs — along with its well-established aggressive pricing — in the coming months, including ones that will be ready for the ultra-high-speed LTE-Advancednetworks. Submit Blogger Sitemap To Google Webmaster Tools
Below are some easy steps you have to go through in terms to submit your blogspot blog sitemap.

Sign in to Google Webmaster Tools.
Click on the blog title for which you want to add sitemap.
Click on Sitemaps button as shown below.

At the top right corner of the page, press Add/Test sitemap button.

Once you click the button, a small box will appear as shown in the screenshot below.

That section helps us a lot to make your blog search engine friendly and to gain handsome traffic from search engines. Facebook Announces News Reader App 'Paper'

The new app will surface content from 19 different "sections," including sports, tech, pop culture, and "LOL." The app also has a "Newsfeed" section, which is the same News Feed users are accustomed to on the native apps, but with a new design.

Each section will have a rotating carousel of images across the top, and individual cards and stories below that image. The new app was specifically designed to look different than the native apps, and has larger images and content cards without the typical blue trim present on Facebook's native apps.

Users will be able to select which sections they wish to subscribe to, and all content will be curated through a process that includes an algorithm and a human selection. For now, sections will not be personalized. For example, a user in San Francisco will see the same items in his sports section as a user in Chicago, although personalization could be added in the future.

The app also has a preview feature for users to see what their posts will look like before they are shared on Paper. Anything shared on Paper will also appear on that user's Facebook News Feed in the native apps and on desktop.

Despite Facebook's mobile ad success — 53% of the company revenue came from mobile ads last quarter — Paper will launch without any ads on the service. This includes sponsored stories. It's likely that ads will be added once the company examines how users engage with the product, but for now, the app will be ad-free.

The new app was announced after Wednesday's earnings call, where Zuckerberg talked openly about the company's upcoming product plans. "While the core business growth is going to come from the main app that exists," CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, "you should also expect us to start building a few of these other things that we will focus on over time and develop into meaningful things like Messenger and Instagram are today."

The app was created by a 15-person team known as Facebook Creative Labs, located at the company headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif. (This is not an actual lab, but simply a group focusing on these types of standalone apps.) The news reader app has long been rumored, and was reportedly the pet project of Facebook's Head of Product, Chris Cox, for years.

The initial look of the app is reminiscent of Flipboard, with large photos and card tiles. LinkedIn's news reader app, Pulse, also has a tile look. LinkedIn recently updated Pulse in order to integrate the content more closely with what was available on the platform's web service.

Paper is schedule to hit the App Store on Monday February 3, but will only be available to iPhone users at launch. There is no Android or iPad versions of Paper, and there is no timeline for when they may be available, according to a company spokesperson.

Wikipedia Voice Intro Project (WikiVIP) launched to preserve voice recordings of celebrities

The Wikipedia Voice Intro Project (WikiVIP) is a novel attempt to record voices of notable achievers in diverse fields, and make them a part of the Wikipedia entries (e.g. biographies) in their name. Readers can reference these voice recordings and get to know more through the voices behind the personalities. The recordings are short – about ten seconds or so, but they could add significantly to the multimedia bank on the online encyclopedia. Readers can not only find out how their favorite celebrities sound, but also learn how to pronounce their names right. The audio project should also contribute to the digital archiving for future generations.

The project asks prominent people like famous scientists, artists, and more, to make a short recording of their voice, lasting around ten seconds. The recordings are then uploaded to their respective Wikipedia pages so that readers know "what they sound like and how to correctly pronounce their names".

While Wikimedia is off to a good start with WikiVip, it has a long way to go before the majority of biography pages include a voice recording. At this writing, there were less than 200 voice recordings available on Wikipedia via the WikiVip project— you can find all the voice recordings on Wikimedia.org

Microsoft renames SkyDrive to OneDrive

Microsoft is renaming its SkyDrive cloud storage to OneDrive. The software giant has registered onedrive.com and the company has a promotional video on YouTube announcing the new name. Microsoft says the name change will take place soon, and that the service "will continue to operate as you expect and all of your content will be available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business respectively as the new name is rolled out across the portfolio."

The name change comes more than six months after Microsoft was forced to rename SkyDrive following a trademark case with British Sky Broadcasting Group (BSkyB). Microsoft is positioning the new OneDrive naming as the one place for documents, photos, and other content. "Changing the name of a product as loved as SkyDrive wasn’t easy," admits Microsoft's Ryan Gavin. "We are excited about what is to come, and can’t wait to share more."

Naturally, Microsoft has been swift to dispel any notion that the changeover will be anything other than smooth and seamless. For SkyDrive users, all content will be available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business as with the current, corresponding SkyDrive services, so anybody worried about their data – provided Microsoft keeps to its word – shouldn’t have too much to be concerned about.

Using Your Smartphone as Your Hotel Room Key

If you're staying at the Aloft Hotel in New York City or Silicon Valley, you'll soon be able to use your smartphone as your room key.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide is adding a "virtual room key" to its Starwood app in hopes that it can help make the checkin process less of a hassle.

Rather than waiting on a long line to get your key from the front desk at the hotel, users can check in and set their payment method on the app. The app then becomes your room key.

Starwood's CEO Frits van Paasschen told The Wall Street Journal that he believes this new feature will "become the new standard for how people will want to enter a hotel." He concedes that the idea might "be a novelty at first" but said he thinks "it will become table stakes for managing a hotel."

The technology works using Bluetooth and will work with any iPhone 4S or higher, and Android phones

running Android 4.3 or newer.

The Bluetooth connection in the phone connects to a sensor on the door that activates the lock. The locks are battery-powered, meaning they will work even if a hotel's computer system goes down.

This isn't the first time using a smartphone as a room key has been discussed. As far back at 2010, Apple filed patents for using the iPhone in various travel and retail scenarios.

Starwood is going to pilot the program in its Aloft hotels in Cupertino, Calif., and Harlem, N.Y., hotels in 2014, but hopes to roll the feature out to all of its Aloft and W hotels by the end of 2015.
