Sir John Sorrell discusses the importance of design to economic growth in the UK, and what the Design Festival can do to promote British design skills.

London Design Festival will take over the V&A with a host of events, workshops and talks. Among the highlights are:

A striking installation by Amanda Levete Architects outside the museum's entrance
Textile Field, a foam and textile floor covering by the Bouroullec Brothers in the Raphael Gallery, where you can lie down, relax and admire the artworks
Power of Making, an exhibition with the Crafts Council exploring the nature of making and featuring 100 exquisitely made objects
Designer guides to the V&A by Tom Dixon, Lulu Guinness, Annie Lennox and Judi Dench

Other highlights of the London Design Festival's 250-strong events programme include:

Perspectives at St Paul's Cathedral: An installation by architect John Pawson on the cathedral's Geometric Staircase, made from Swarovski crystals and mirrors
Cut It Out at Outline Editions gallery: An embossing machine designed by graphic artist Noma Bar, where you can create your own image, which will be signed and numbered
Reddress at the Finnish Institute: An enormous dress made from 550m of fabric, which will be worn by a performer and fit an audience of 238 people inside its folds

Australian Season - British Museum

From now until October 2011, experience some diverse aspects of Australia at the British Museum. The season includes a specially commissioned space presenting Australian biodiversity in the Museum's forecourt, in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, an exhibition of modern Australian works - most of which have never been seen in public before - and a display of beautifully handcrafted baskets, created by Indigenous Australians.

Tracing the history of animation over the last 150 years, Watch Me Move: The Animation Show brings together for the first time, contemporary artists, cut-out, collage, puppet, clay and stop-motion animators, auteur filmmakers and exponents of experimental film alongside the creative output of the commercial studios such as Walt Disney, Hanna-Barbera, Aardman, and Pixar. Presenting animation as a distinctive and highly influential force in the development of visual culture, this exhibition explores the relationship between animation and film and offers a timely insight into animation as a cultural and socio-political phenomenon.

Artists, film-makers and studios whose work is represented include: Aardman, Walt Disney, Studio Ghibli, Fleischer Studios, Eadward Muybridge, Lumière Brothers, Stan Brakhage, Len Lye, Francis Alÿs, William Kentridge, Christian Boltanski and Kara Walker amongst others.

Larger Than Life is a major exhibition of original paintings by Britain's most popular painter, Beryl Cook. The artist, who died in 2008, lived in Bristol for several years and was best known for her humorous paintings of ordinary people 'having a good time'. Glamour of the Gods: Hollywood Portraits

The National Portrait Gallery's latest exhibition features more than 70 vintage Hollywood photos taken between 1920 and 1960.

The show gives a rare insight into the now defunct Hollywood studio system, where studios had a huge amount of control over the image of the stars they represented.

In a time before paparazzi, the studios would send thousands of photos to fans and publications. Stills were used to encapsulate the plot in film posters and lobby cards.

Glamour of the Gods includes the work of more than 40 photographers, including:

Clarence Sinclair Bull
Laszlo Willinger
Bob Coburn
Davis Boulton, one of the few British photographers working for the Hollywood studios

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2011

The Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition is one of London's longest-running art shows, now in its 243rd year.

It's also the world's largest open-submission contemporary art exhibition with around 11,000 works submitted annually.

See new and recent work by established, unknown and emerging artists, including Royal Academy artists (Academicians).

The show covers painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture and architecture. Most of the pieces are for sale, so it's a great chance to purchase some original artwork.

Although the names of the artists on display at this year's exhibition have yet to be announced, the coordinators of the various exhibition rooms have been named as:

The festival will include 'BIG Art' whereby a series of large canvases will be painted in one day, then exhibited and sold at auction; an art fair; an open painting competition and an 'Art car-boot'.

At the At Home in Japan exhibition you can literally step into Japanese life, thanks to the Geffrye Museum's re-creation of a standard Japanese urban apartment.

Decorated with everyday possessions, the model home includes an entrance hall, "Western-style" room, traditional tatami room, bathroom and combined living-dining-kitchen room.

William Turner: painter of elements

Kunstmeile Hamburg: "William Turner was known to his contemporaries as "the painter of light". In his landscape paintings he created new, unusual combinations of earth, air, fire and water and closely examined their interactions.

His lifelong observations of the natural world gave him fundamental insight into the truth of nature and supported his increasing fascination with the fusion of the elements. Turner's vision of elements merged together by the forces of nature was closely linked to contemporary research in the natural sciences.

This exhibition brings together around 85 works from the Tate Gallery in London and other collections from Britain and the USA. The five subject areas, Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Fusion illustrate the development of Turner's landscape paintings over a period of many years and show how his painting technique, which blends shapes and elements together, was influenced by the latest scientific discoveries.

Hamburg is the first location for this exhibition, which has been designed by the Bucerius Kunst Forum. Subsequently, it will travel to the National Museum in Krakow and then be shown at the newly opened Turner Contemporary in Margate, England."

The use of mind-altering drugs is nothing new. Throughout history, drugs have been used in different ways: as medicines, to inspire works of art or to connect with the divine.

Many drugs commonly used in Britain today – such as alcohol, coffee and tobacco – were once illegal.

High Society looks at the history of drugs in society, from Egyptian poppy tinctures to Victorian cocaine eye drops.

The exhibition explains how various mind-altering substances were first discovered and how our attitudes towards them have changed through the ages.

This exhibition takes place on 17 Jan - 25 February 2011. The exhibition comprises images taken from a successful MA Photography project called ‘From Above’ which researched the concept of taking photographic images exclusively looking down and the effect of this perspective on perception. The images drew inspiration from the photographers of the New Movement in Photography of the 1930’s where the development of the miniature hand held camera allowed the flexibility to capture images from previously inaccessible locations and unusual angles.

Initially appealing was the way that looking down on a subject can isolate and expose an almost abstract quality to what are often familiar objects, however the new perspective also revealed that there would often be a commonality of shape, pattern or form, a connection between very diverse subjects that had previously been invisible, to retain these relationships the images are presented as non narrative sequences that I call Transitions.

Italian artist Rosa Barba has brought her beguiling mix of film and sculpture to Tate Modern's Level 2 gallery. In her work film projectors command the viewer's attention as much as the images they project. They are found hanging loosely from the ceiling, or whirring away noisily in the centre of the gallery. In this interview Barba tells us how works like 'A Private Tableaux' (filmed in Liverpool's ventilation towers) and 'The Long Road (documenting a race track in the Californian desert) are like drawings made with a camera.

The V&A's fascinating exhibition Imperial Chinese Robes reveals what life was like in the Forbidden City by examining the clothing worn in the imperial court.

Imperial Chinese Robes from the Forbidden City features garments, robes and accessories worn by the emperors and empresses of the Qing Dynasty, the last ruling dynasty of China.

See everything from informal garments and hunting outfits, to intricate clothing designed for grand state functions and imperial banquets.

There are more than 50 garments to admire in Imperial Chinese Robes from the Forbidden City, plus 20 accessories and 15 fabrics, including:

Intricately woven brown gauze robe with golden dragon roundels dating back to the Kangxi reign (1662-1722)
Wedding dress robe with red dragon and phoenix worn by Yehe Nara Jingfen for her marriage to the Guangxu emperor in 1889

Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition

Titanic sailed from Cherbourg on 10 April 1912. Three days later, the world's largest ship sank after colliding with an iceberg, claiming 1,500 lives.

Now you can see more than 300 artefacts from the ship, along with recreated rooms and interiors at Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition at The O2.

Recreated first and third-class cabins, the cargo hold and boiler room

The Saatchi Gallery is a London gallery for contemporary art, opened by Charles Saatchi in 1985 in order to exhibit his collection to the public. It has occupied different premises, first in North London, then the South Bank by the River Thames and currently in Chelsea. The gallery has been a major influence on art in Britain since its opening.

In 2010 it was announced that the gallery would be given to the British public, becoming the Museum of Contemporary Art for London.

Saatchi & Saatchi is a global advertising agency. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange and founded by brothers Maurice (now Lord Saatchi) and art collector Charles in 1970. Saatchi & Saatchi has offices in over 80 countries around the world.

The Saatchi brothers were born into a family of Iraqi Jews in Baghdad; the name "Saatchi" means "Watchmaker" in Turkish.

Saatchi brothers were noted for their campaign "Labour isn't working" on behalf of the Conservative Party before the 1979 UK general election and for the advertisements for British Airways, Silk Cut and other state-owned interests privatised by the Conservatives in the 1980s.

Now in its eighth year, the London Design Festival is firmly established on the international design calendar.

Last year the festival hosted more than 200 exhibitions and 150 launches, private views and parties. This year looks set to be even more exciting.

The centrepiece of this year's London Design Festival is a giant mechanical octopus called Outrace in Trafalgar Square.

Designed by Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram, the installation will be made from six massive robotic arms from car maker Audi's production line.

The tentacles will emit light beams, and the public will be invited to control the piece and draw "light paintings" and texts in the air.

For the second year, London Design Festival is taking over spaces in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Highlights of the V&A programme include:

A pop-up Festival Café
A dramatic installation by Stuart Haygarth on the grand marble staircase leading to the Architecture Galleries

A new exhibition at Handel House Museum commemorates the 40th anniversary of Jimi Hendrix's death on 18 September 1970.

The Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition is one of London's longest-running art shows, now in its 242nd year.

It's also the world's largest open-submission contemporary art exhibition with around 11,000 works submitted annually.

Each year, the Summer Exhibition features work by Royal Academy artists (Academicians). This year, you'll be able to see new work by artists such as Ed Ruscha, Gillian Ayres and Tracey Emin.

Guest curators in 2010 include Fiona Rae, who will take over a room within the exhibition, and David Chipperfield, who will curate the Architecture Gallery.

This summer, renowned Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto is transforming the Hayward Gallery with a series of spectacular installations.

Neto is known for his immersive artworks, often made from stretched lycra, which give the impression of being inside a body. Spices, plastic balls and cushions are used to provide different textures and scents.

Recently, Neto has been exploring a new direction in his work, using steel to produce large-scale structures, one of which will be shown for the first time at the Hayward Gallery.

Neto was born in 1964 and lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. Last year, he created his largest work to date, called anthropodino, at the Park Avenue Armory in New York.

Princess Grace and Prince Rainier had three children: Caroline, Albert (current ruler of the Principality of Monaco) and Stéphanie. Grace died in 1982 when she had a stroke at the wheel of her car and drove it off the edge of a cliff in Monaco.

Contemporary French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has created a walk-through aviary with 40 zebra finches for this free exhibition at the Barbican.

The birds' perches are made from guitars, and they feed from cymbals filled with seeds and water.

As the birds go about their daily lives, they make music by plucking the guitar strings and pecking at the cymbals.

Boursier-Mougenot trained as a musician and began his career as a theatre composer. He started making installations in the early 1990s.

Working in a variety of media, including sculpture, video and sound, Boursier-Mougenot creates installations that bring together sound and visual art.

The Barbican show is Boursier-Mougenot's first solo exhibition in the UK.

Henry Moore (1898-1986) was one of Britain's greatest artists.

This new exhibition at Tate Britain will demonstrate Moore's position at the forefront of progressive 20th century sculpture, with the most comprehensive selection of his works shown together for a generation.

Among the fantastic range and quality of Moore's art, the new Tate show examines three themes: war, women and world culture.

Henry Moore first emerged as an artist in the wake of the First World War, during which he served on the Western Front. This exhibition looks at the impact this had on his art.

The recurring motif of the mother and child is explored throughout Tate Britain's exhibition.

Moore called it his "fundamental obsession", and presented a complex vision of the maternal relationship, ranging from the nurturing bond of Mother and Child 1930-3, to Suckling Child 1930.

Other highlights of this show include sculptures influenced by world cultures:

Moore's primitive masks and works such as Girl with Clasped Hands 1930
abstract sculptures from the 1930s such as Composition 1931
threatening and sexualised works influenced by Freud and psychoanalysis such as Reclining Figure 1939

London artist Michael Landy is proving modern art is indeed rubbish with his new show, Art Bin, at South London Gallery.

Landy appealed to artists to donate their unwanted works, to be thrown into a giant, see-through bin, which he calls "a monument to creative failure".

Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Gillian Wearing are among the high-profile artists who’ve contributed work.

But you don’t have to be famous to have your art binned: anyone can take a work to the gallery, where Landy or one of his assistants will decide whether to add it to the bin.

French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot creates works by drawing on the rhythms of daily life to produce sound in unexpected ways.

For his installation in The Curve, Boursier-Mougenot creates a walk-though aviary for a flock of zebra finches, furnished with electric guitars and other musical instruments. As the birds go about their routine activities, perching on or feeding from the various pieces of equipment, they create a captivating, live soundscape.

A giant pride of 100 individually decorated, life-size lion sculptures, will be taking up residence in and around the World Heritage City of Bath from May to October 2010 in a unique cultural event to raise funds for local charities and bring a smile to the faces of residents and visitors alike.

The lion sculptures, sponsored by businesses, local communities and individuals, will be decorated by artists and craftspeople using their skill and imagination to produce eye-catching artworks from the beautiful to the bizarre. At the end of the summer all of the lions will be auctioned for charity to end their days as fabulous works of art in offices, homes and gardens.

Turner Prize-nominated artist Roger Hiorns has transformed a derelict London council flat by covering the interior with copper sulphate crystals.

The work is commissioned by Artangel, which has a long tradition of transforming urban housing into large-scale works of art.

Artangel's legacy stretches back to Rachel Whiteread's landmark House in 1993, in which the artist made a concrete cast of the interior of an East London terraced house.

Hiorns filled three rooms of a derelict London flat near Elephant and Castle station with 90,000 litres of concentrated copper sulphate solution.

Two and a half weeks later he drained it out, to reveal a glittering interior encrusted with deep blue crystals.

At once eerily pure and deeply industrial, a visit to Seizure involves pulling on wellington boots and protective gloves.

Inside, light from bare bulbs bounces off the jagged edges of crystal-encrusted walls, heightening the sense of wonder inside what, from the outside, appears to be just a boarded-up London flat.
