The Seattle Seahawks were one of the biggest surprises in the league in 2012. Not much was expected from them as they decided to start a rookie quarterback in Russell Wilson. Well, Wilson made a huge name for himself in guiding the Seahawks to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth. Seattle would go on the road and defeat the Washington Redskins before falling short in the closing seconds against the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Divisional Round.

With Wilson and the offense ever-improving, and one of the best defenses in the league, the Seahawks are primed to contend for a Lombardi Trophy in 2013. These players absolutely love playing for Pete Carroll, who made a big splash this offseason and traded for Percy Harvin to give this offense another weapon. There’s no question that this is going to be one of the teams to beat in the NFC.

Seattle will be up against the 11th-toughest schedule in 2013. Its opponents combined for a 130-122-4 record and a 51.6 winning percentage last season. The Seahawks are set to do battle against the AFC South and NFC South divisions. They also will take on the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants due to finishing second in the NFC West division in 2012.

The oddsmakers at Cantor gaming are absolutely huge on the Seahawks in 2013. They are an underdog in just one game, which is a 2-point dog at San Francisco. They are a pick ‘em in one as well, which will be their rematch at Atlanta in Week 10. I certainly believe there’s some value in fading the Seattle in 2013 against the spread, though I do believe it is capable of winning 11 games again this season.

The top-seeded Miami Heat and the third-seeded Indiana Pacers will collide once again in another expected physical battle on Friday, May 24, at the American Airlines Arena in Miami. The game two of the Eastern Conference Finals will be aired live on TNT starting 8:30 PM Eastern Time. The Heat are listed as 7.5-point favorites in the latest odds, while the total has been set at 180.5 points.

Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers are clearly behind the Miami Heat in terms of talent, but they almost stole one from the defending champions in the series opener. Had they avoided a defensive breakdown in the final two seconds of the game, the Pacers would have escaped with a huge victory in game one wherein the Heat scored a thrilling 103-102 overtime win on Wednesday in Miami.

Although he struggled early in the game, Paul George had an excellent performance as he finished with 27 points, including a three-pointer that sent the game into an extra period and three cold-blooded free throws that gave the Pacers a one-point lead with 2.2 seconds to play in the game.

David West also had a productive night with 26 points on 11-for-17 shooting to go along with five rebounds, while Roy Hibbert added 19 points and nine rebounds, but he was questionably taken out in the final play of the match.

Miami Heat

With 2.2 seconds left to play in the game, LeBron James took the matter in his own hands and drove to the lane, converting the game-winning layup without any challenge from the Pacers. Roy Hibbert could have made a huge difference if he was in the final play of the match.

James, the reigning and four-time league MVP, was simply too much for the Pacers in game one as he posted a triple-double with 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Dwyane Wade was also a huge factor, tallying 19 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists, while Chris Bosh added 17 markers. Chris Andersen was also an x-factor, scoring 16 points on a perfect 7-for-7 clip from the field.

Head-to-Head

If the series-opener will be a strong indication of things to come in the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals, game two is expected to be another exciting ball game. There is no time to relax and no room for complacency if the Miami Heat wants to take a commanding 2-0 lead, while the Indiana Pacers needs to be more prepared mentally in the upcoming game. Three-point shooting will also be a factor for both squads as both of them struggled with the Heat shooting just 5-for-18, while the Pacers had a 4-for-14 clip from the three-point region.

The St. Louis Cardinals have a massive edge on the mound with Lance Lynn over Chris Capuano tonight. I’ll gladly side with the small road favorite in this one. The Cardinals (30-16) are clearly the better team over the Dodgers (19-26).

Lynn is 6-1 with a 3.27 ERA and 1.164 WHIP through nine starts this season. Capuano is 1-2 with a 5.49 ERA and 1.424 WHIP through four starts this season, including 1-2 with an 8.03 ERA and 1.865 WHIP in his last three home starts.

St. Louis is 9-1 (+8.5 Units) against the money line vs. an average bullpen whose ERA is 3.75 to 4.50 this season. The Cardinals are 80-38 (+27.6 Units) against the money line vs. teams outscored by opp by 0.5 or more runs/game on the season over the last 3 seasons. Lynn is 22-6 (+13.0 Units) against the money line vs. an NL team with an on base percentage .325 or worse over the last 2 seasons. Bet the Cardinals Friday.

Jim Harbaugh has led the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship in each of his first two seasons on the job. Management has been giving him the right players, and he has been getting the most out of them. After falling short in overtime in the 2011 NFC title game, the 49ers erased a 17-0 deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons 28-24 thanks to a late goal-line stand with only a few seconds remaining.

San Francisco would fall behind 28-6 to Baltimore in the Super Bowl before the lights went out in the stadium. A light came on for the entire team, and they rallied to actually have a chance to win the game. However, the 49ers would be stopped near the goal-line, and eventually lost by a final of 34-31. Harbaugh and company will be one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl in 2013 with almost all of their key players returning from a year ago.

The 49ers will face the ninth-toughest schedule in the NFL in 2013. Their upcoming opponents combined for a 132-122-2 record last season and a 52.0 winning percentage. They will square off against the NFC South and the AFC South divisions. They also have to face the Washington Redskins and the Green Bay Packers, who are fellow divisions winners in the NFC East and NFC North, respectively.

Cantor gaming has pegged the 49ers as a favorite in 14 games, an underdog in one, and a pick ‘em in the other. San Francisco is clearly getting some heavy praise from oddsmakers heading into 2013. Being favored in 14 games, I believe that there will be some value in fading this team all year. Sure, I think they will win close to 11 games and compete for the NFC West title with Seattle, but that’s a far cry from 14 wins.

The St. Louis Rams were at least competitive in head coach Jeff Fisher’s first year on the job in 2012. While they only went 7-8-1 on the season, they would win four of their final six games to give themselves some momentum heading into 2013. In fact, they actually owned a 1-0-1 record against the eventual NFC champion San Francisco 49ers, proving they could play with anyone.

Fisher and company have continued to improve this team through free agency and the draft. St. Louis selected a pair of West Virginia wide receivers in Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey to finally give Sam Bradford weapons that he has desperately been needing. They also added underrated tight end Jared Cook from the Tennessee Titans. St. Louis could be primed to surprise in 2013.

The Rams will be up against the fourth-toughest schedule this coming season. Their opponents combined for a 137-117-2 record and a 53.9 winning percentage last year. Outside of the tough NFC West division, St. Louis will do battle against the AFC South and NFC South. It will also take on the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears, who each finished third in their respective divisions, just like the Rams did a year ago.

The Rams are only expected to be favored in four games, an underdog in 11, and a pick ‘em in one according to the early NFL lines released by Cantor gaming. I have no doubt that this is going to be one of the most undervalued teams in the league heading into 2013 based off of these lines. The Rams managed to win seven games last year, and now with more talent, should at least win that many games in 2013.

The Arizona Cardinals were the talk of the league early in 2012 as they got off to a shocking 4-0 start that included victories over the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots. They were the worst team in the NFL thereafter, going 1-11 over their final 12 games to finish a dismal 5-11 on the season. That finish would lead to the firing of head coach Ken Whisenhunt, though many believe it wasn’t his fault.

The problem with this organization has been the lack of stable quarterback play ever since Kurt Warner retired. Enter Bruce Arians, the former Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator. Arians helped guide the Colts to the playoffs last season while taking over for Chuck Pagano as head coach while he recovered from cancer. He’ll be in charge of improving the offense that now rests in the hands of quarterback Carson Palmer, who the team traded for in the offseason.

Arizona will face the seventh-toughest schedule in the league in 2013. It will be up against opponents that went a combined 131-121-4 for a 52.0 winning percentage a year ago. The Cardinals will square off against the NFC South and AFC South divisions. They also get the Detroit Lions and the Philadelphia Eagles outside of the already stacked NFC West division.

The Cardinals won’t be favored in any games heading into the season according to Cantor gaming. They will be an underdog in 13 and a pick ‘em in the other three. They open with a manageable schedule the first five weeks before having to play the 49ers, Seahawks, Falcons and Texans in a span of four games. Provided they can survive that stretch, there could be a lot of value in backing the Cardinals late in the season. That’s because their next five games come against the Jaguars, Colts, Eagles, Rams and Titans, and they aren’t projected to be a favorite in any of those contests.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were a feel-good story in the NFL through most of the season. They opened 6-4 under first-year head coach Greg Schiano and his new no-nonsense approach. However, they were one worst teams down the stretch, losing each of their next five games before topping the Atlanta Falcons in a meaningless finale.

Off a 7-9 campaign in 2012, the Buccaneers are expected to be improved in 2013. They have added Darrelle Revis to what was one of the worst secondaries in the league a year ago. There’s no question they will be better defensively, but the offense is now the biggest concern heading into training camp. Josh Freeman has yet to prove he can be a consistent, winning starter in this league. This may be his last chance.

Tampa Bay will face the 17th-toughest schedule in the league in 2013. Its upcoming opponents combined for a 127-127-2 record and a 50.0 winning percentage last year. The Buccaneers will do battle against the AFC East and NFC West divisions. Due to finishing last in the NFC South, they will also square off against fellow last-place division finishers in the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles.

The Buccaneers are only projected to be favored in six games, and an underdog in the other 10 according to Cantor gaming. Some books have set their win total at nine, so this team is certainly undervalued against the spread in the majority of their games in my opinion. Tampa Bay should be a solid spread bet all year as it wins eight or nine games in 2013.

The New Orleans Saints were a huge disappointment in 2012 due in large part to Bounty Gate. They had several players suspended early, and they were without head coach Sean Payton for the entire season. They would lose their first four games before winning five of their next six to get back in playoff contention. However, they dropped four of their final six games to finish a dismal 7-9 on the year.

There are no more excuses heading into 2013. Payton is back to call the shots this year. The offense remains explosive behind Drew Brees, but the defense needs to improve dramatically if this team wants to compete for an NFC South title. That’s a big reason why the Saints have brought on one of the best defensive coordinators in the league in Rob Ryan this offseason.

The schedule makers have done the Saints no favors, though. New Orleans will face the third-toughest schedule in the league in 2013. It will be up against opponents that combined for a 137-117-2 record and a 53.9 winning percentage last year. The Saints are set to do battle with the NFC West and AFC East divisions. They will also take on the Dallas Cowboys and the Chicago Bears, who each finished third in their respective divisions.

According to Cantor gaming, the Saints are expected to be a favorite in 10 games, an underdog in four, and a pick ‘em in the other two. I believe Cantor is a little too high on the this team heading into 2013. They will not win 10 games in an improved NFC South division because their defense continues to hold them back. They will be improved from their 7-win campaign a year ago, but I don’t expect them to win more than 9 games in 2013.

The Carolina Panthers are coming off a dismal 2012 campaign. They were expected to be improved in the second year with Cam Newton under center, but that wasn’t really the case. They opened the season 3-9 through their first twelve games, losing seven games by 6 points or less. This was a completely revived team down the stretch, winning each of their final four games to close out the season.

Now, with some momentum from a great finish last season, the Panthers are poised to finally take that next step forward. They have done an excellent job of revamping their defense over the past two offseasons, and the offense remains explosive with Newton under center. Ron Rivera has been brought back for a third season, but he’s clearly on the hot seat and needs his team to make a run at the playoffs to keep his job.

Even though it finished in the bottom of the league in 2012, Carolina actually has the toughest schedule of all 32 teams in 2013. Its upcoming opponents combined for a 138-116-2 record and a 54.3 winning percentage a year ago. The Panthers will square off against the tough NFC West and AFC East divisions. They also draw the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings due to finishing second in the NFC South.

The Panthers will be favored in only four games, an underdog in 11 and a pick ‘em in one according to the oddsmakers at Cantor Gaming. I believe this is going to be one of the most underrated teams heading into 2013 based on these lines. Sure, Carolina drew the toughest schedule, but I really don’t believe it’s as tough as it’s perceived. I look for this team to win eight or nine games in 2013.

There are 33 drivers ready to tackle the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500. Indy fans can only hope to see the same kind of excitement and record-setting performances that were on display at the Indy 500 in 2012. Dario Franchitti took home the checkered flag in dramatic fashion. There were a race-record 34 lead changes, seven of which came by Franchitti, including the final one that counted most.

There will be two drivers that have won the Indy 500 three times in this year’s race. They are Franchitti (2007, 2010, 2012) and Helio Castroneves (2001, 2002, 2009. As you can see, the two have combined to win six of the past 12 Indy 500′s. They will be trying to join the all-time elite drivers with four wins at The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.

There are other great stories heading into this 102-year-old race. Ed Carpenter is the surprise pole sitter, while current NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger is in the field. All 33 drivers will be fighting to drink the traditional celebratory glass of milk in Victory Lane, while also being presented with the massive Borg-Warner Trophy.

Six of the last seven Indy 500 champions have been represented by the two most dominant teams in IndyCar. Target Chip Ganassi Racing and Penske Racing are the clear kings of the sport. However, all five Andretti entries will start within the top nine positions, putting his team in position to stop this recent trend set by Ganassi and Penske. Andretti Racing has not won the Indy 500 since the late Dan Wheldon’s triumph in 2005.

The betting odds have been set for the 2013 Indianapolis 500. The favorites are Scott Dixon (7/1), Helio Castroneves (7.1), Marco Andretti (7/1) and Ed Carpenter (7/1). They are followed by Dario Franchitti (7/1), James Hinchcliffe (8/1), Ryan Hunter-Reay (10/1), Will Power (12/1) and AJ Allmendinger (12/1). The rest of the field is 15/1 or longer odds. I’m going to go through and offer my predictions on the top three drivers that have a chance to win this Sunday.

Indy 500 Predictions

Helio Castroneves (7/1) – Unlike Franchitti, who is also going for his fourth Indy 500 victory, Castroneves’ Chevy has been very fast in May. He has been on the cusp of win No. 4 for a few years now, and I look for him to likely break through in 2013. His Indy excellence, coupled with the great strategy at Penske Racing, has me believing that this is his year.

Will Power (12/1) – Out to prove that he can win on an oval in IndyCar, Power will be right there at the finish line. Penske will pull all the stops to make sure he’s in the front, but his biggest obstacle will be overcoming teammate Castroneves. Power is simply due for his first win in over a year as he continues to put the work in. He’ll start 6th, which certainly helps his cause.

AJ Allmendinger (12/1) – The current NASCAR driver certainly has the car and the speed to win the Indy 500 on his first try. Sure, he doesn’t have much experience on the IndyCar oval, but I love his aggressive style. He has the right race team behind him as he’ll be provided with some of the best strategy on pit road. Allmendinger will start 5th on Sunday, and at this price of 12/1, he’s worth a look.
