The ‘Reveal’ survey is coming!

The spiritual growth of our congregation is of vital importance to us at Bethel Bible Church. Whether you’re just starting to explore the Christian faith, or you’re a long-time Christ Follower, we want to do everything we can to help you on your spiritual journey. That’s why we need your help.

On May 18th we’re going to launch an online assessment called ‘Reveal’ that will ask you questions about your spiritual life to see how our church as a whole is growing spiritually. The survey is COMPLETELY ANONYMOUS and hosted by a third-party research organization.

The value of this survey is directly related to how many people take the time to fill it out, so your participation is greatly needed! The survey will open May 18th and from that point you will have two weeks to complete it. It will be entirely online and should take about 30-40 minutes to finish. Please make the commitment now to set aside the time to do this yourself and encourage your life group, Sunday school, and friends at church to participate as well. We will have more information including the link to the online survey coming soon.

Friday in Sierra Leone

Friday in Sierra Leone
Much of the day with Rob again at BEE for Zach, Matt, Lee, and Chad in the village near Waterloo.
BEE is an amazing organization and it was awesome to hear some of their meeting with the local pastors today. They started with a prayer that broke out into song, and then back into group prayer, and then back to single prayer. It was very different than how we would start anything in America but it was beautiful and worshipful. A great way to start. The class ended in a similar way, with group prayer, a very gracious thank you to Rob with BEE and us with Bethel. The local pastors send their regards to the church family and are very thankful for you’re support!

A couple times throughout the day we got brave and walked around the neighborhood to talked to a few adults and a million kids. It never fails, if we step outside the main building we would get attacked by local kids… But that’s pretty much the expectation here! We talked to a couple kids who were getting water from their well and Zach wanted to see if it was as hard as they made it look… Apparently it was! He keeps complaining about being sore but in think he’s just being a baby. Of course, I didn’t try it so I can say all I want haha! The “rope” tied to the bucket used at the well was made of a cut up tire but it really worked well for them! They asked if we see going to install a pump for them. Of course we don’t have any clue on how to do that so we said no and they were a little disappointed.

Power bar for lunch while the locals had Kasava leaf with fish and chicken on rice. It looked good but we didn’t want to risk it so we kindly declined. The class wrapped up around 330 so we started the 1.5 hour journey into town at Bliss (a Lebanese restaurant on the west side of town) for the meeting with the GEM board.
The board meeting was supposed to start at 630, but we didnt really get going until about 730. Different culture, different values on time. As with any board meeting on either side of the Atlantic, needless to say, it was a late night.

The ride home was long but safe and were headed to bed for our last night in Africa. It’s bitter sweet really. We’re all excited to get home to our families and “normal” life, but at the same time we will miss these people and unique experience we had on this trip.

Thursday in Sierra Leone
I want to title this blog post “What the Shiny Missions Brochures Don’t Tell You.”
Today was pretty good. We hung around Rob today as be taught “Biblical Education by Extension” (BEE) to a group of local pastors in one of the local villages today.
It is awesome that he was able to “pastor the pastors” and interesting to see that pastors are very similar across cultures when you get a few of them in the same room for a while… That’s not a bad thing it’s just the truth :) We played with the village kids; well, actually they played with us. Some of them have never seen a white person before so they don’t know what do think! We’ve heard that they like to touch our hands and arms so much because we are softer than the people here because we don’t do as much manual labor. Odd, but believable. If a child finds out that we are in the area they tell everybody else and they all come out to play with the “opotu.”
It’s great to play with the kids and hold them and love on them but really soon you realize that they probably haven’t had a shower in a few days. And well, they’re kids so they touch, roll around in, and play with ANYTHING they find. The “helicopter parent” phenomenon is definitely not a problem here. When playing with the children you end up with a real psychological battle going on inside your own head and its tough to deal with. Either way the people are awesome.
Mission brochures also don’t mention that water and electricity are serious things here. This means the showers you do get to take are cold and you have to take an “African” shower. That is, turning the water on, getting wet, turning the water off, soaping up, water on, and rinse. It’s really not too bad and after you’ve been sweating and dirty all day it is the best feeling in the world!!
Another thing people typically don’t tell you about; food is hit or miss. What you think you’re going to get isn’t always what you actually get, and sometimes you don’t get ANY food, so take a few power bars just in case (not chocolate, they melt.)
Transportation is hit or miss! As you may have gathered from the previous posts, we’ve had more than a few issues this trip. With very lenient emissions and safety standards, the cars here stay on the road till they are literally falling apart or falling off the road! That’s the culture though. Cars are expensive and frankly, mechanics are a little cheaper here than back home. This all adds up to very high chances of your vehicle having problems. But don’t worry because you can get just about anything fixed really quick (a day or so if not a matter of hours) and cheap. So you’ll be puttering along again in no time!
They also don’t tell you what kind of struggles you will face in your own heart. There’s nothing in there about how quickly you will connect with people, even across language barriers. I’ve never read anything that could prepare me for the personal dilemmas I would be forced to deal with when facing; poverty, a culture that is constantly under spiritual attack, and so many people across the world that are trying to help but actually paralyzingly a whole people group.
Finally, in the shiny missions brochures they don’t tell you how awesome it is to realize that you are worshiping the same Jesus as people oceans away who look different, speak a different language, and have a totally different way of life. When God shows you THAT, and you realize that the only thing that matters is preaching the word and encouraging fellow believers, you won’t need a shiny missions brochure to convince you to carry out the great commission.

Wednesday in Sierra Leone

Eggs, plantains, pineapple, etc for breakfast again. It still amazes me how different their eggs are from ours. They should be mostly the same but the yolks aren’t nearly as yellow. They still taste great though!
After the fiasco last night we got a new vehicle today and only Bobson was allowed to drive it so we got a new driver too! He’s a great driver and the vehicle is air conditioned and has tinted windows!! It’s really nice but after rolling with the windows down for 3.5 days I sort of feel numb to the world. We kind of miss the “unique” smells, the sounds of the city, and the slight temperature changes as we to from the city to the country. It sounds weird, but it’s true.
We went and met with Kiamotos school teachers this morning and they were very nice. There seems to be quite a few polio survivors in their village and most of them had little NON-motorized scooters. Yeah, they looked like hand driven “Rascals” really genius actually I’ll post a picture when I can.
After that we went to “The Raining Season” orphanage for a meeting. The “adults” met while Zach and Matt went to hang out with the kids. Unfortunately it was afternoon rest time so the kids were in their rooms but they weren’t sleeping! Four boys, Malligie, Joseph, Suwaju, and Umaru, were hanging out their windows wanting to talk. They spoke very good English and were very smart. The youngest was 10 and the oldest was 13 but they all looked much younger. We even got to speak to the pastor who helped start the organization and it was a blessing to see his love for the children after coming out of an orphanage himself. A great conversation with Pastor Daniel. As we left the orphanage one of the kids said “don’t forget us!” It broke my heart.
Our ride back to the hope center was pretty uneventful. We got word earlier that our other team got stranded on the side of the road for 5 hours on their way back from B.E.E. (biblical education by extension) in Kabala. The last we heard they were moving again and we hope to see them soon!

Tuesday in Sierra Leone

Tuesday started similar to monday with eggs, bread, pineapple, and fried plantains. It was all very good and the ladies who prepared it at the hope center were very gracious.

We went to meet with teachers at a couple of the G.E.M. Schools. It was great to see the world from their prospective and hear their heart for the kids. They all have very little to teach with; small buildings, and curriculum far behind . They do the best with what they have and it really shows with the kids.
The second or third grade kids at one of the schools had a song to sing for us when we got there. It really made us feel welcome and they did a great job even though we couldn’t understand most of the song. The teachers explained to us what their normal day looks like; they start with “religious morality” lessons which is teaching from the bible, then they have math, reading, writing, science, etc like our schools. The kids all wear uniforms and look very organized and seem very well behaved.

Back into Freetown tonight to meet with Sondra who came to Freetown via mercy ships in 2008. She has an awesome story that I don’t have time to go into here but it was very good to get to talk with her and hear how she is helping in the local hospitals.
On the way into town we saw that the ships came in loaded full of cargo crates. We saw them in the harbor unloading hundreds of huge metal crates into trucks. More on that later.
Before eating dinner Zach and nick joined a bunch of guys playing soccer on the beach. Nick got a pretty bad blister on his foot and Zach got schooled by a Sierra Leonian but they all had fun and enjoyed playing together which was really cool.
We are dinner at the “Atlantic” which was on the Atlantic (of course). Eating by the beach was amazing and a much needed change from the past few days.
After dinner while we were trying to make it back across the southern part of Freetown the traffic was stopped up much more than it had been the nights before. We soon realized this was because the trucks with the cargo freight boxes were headed down the already narrow roads and stopping up traffic. I don’t know where they were going but they were full of “stuff” from all over the world.
We made it through the town headed out toward Jui and this is where the night gets interesting. We had been having trouble with the land cruiser we were in for a couple days. It would get hot, start puttering like it was out of gas, we would stop for a bit and it would start back up and run fine again. Tonight this happened so we shut it off for a few minutes, started it back up, and it was still just puttering along. The first time we were forced to stop was right by a huge pile of trash (I’m sorry but you probably don’t understand what I mean when I say huge pile of trash but you will see from the pictures later.) The car limped across the narrow bridge, and we had to stop again… By another huge pile of trash (see the theme here?) We did this for about 3 miles. We finally made it to our turn off where the hope center was just under a half a mile away so we just got out and walked. The road was full of potholes, a few vendors, and a lot of motorcycle taxis going up and down. 5 white guys walking in the pitch black night down the street in Sierra Leone. We used our iPhones to light the way and every one of us still stumbled through the half paved mangled road but we finally made it and the driver got the car to work and made it to the hope center as well.
This wasn’t the end if the experience though… The hope center was locked and we couldn’t get inside. It’s about 11pm and the gate man was working with us to try and figure out a way in since be key he had didnt work. After about 20min he was able to wake Rochelle inside and she came to let us in and we finally made it to bed.
Another very interesting day.

Monday in Sierra Leone

Sunday night we arrived at the guest house called the “hope center” located in Jui. The missionaries and staff there are all very welcoming and helpful. The center itself is nice. Very western in design, no AC but the fans and windows circulate the air. The showers and toilet stalls are about what you would expect in a third world country, very different than America. Water is hard to come by so every place has their own reservoirs mounted high on top of the buildings and the plumbing is gravity powered. The showers aren’t hot, but after a day of sweating and being dirty I am thankful for any water and soap!
Monday we met with pastors of local churches supported by G.E.M.; Solomon charlie, Kaimoto, James, and Charles. David who used to be the pastor at Lumpa was also around for a little while so we got to learn from him as well. We got some video interviews with them including their testimony and why they like being a pastor in Sierra Leone.
Anywhere we go, the young kids are immediately drawn to Zach out of wherever they are. He is literally a kid magnet. So while the “grown ups” were talking, Zach was playing with the kids. It’s interesting to see the childlike innocence of the young children here just like in America. Once they get to about 13 they are much less likely to come up to us and try to touch us and play with us. Younger than that, they have just about zero inhibition! As we played with the kids we would see their parents in the background working and taking care if house chores and we would try to engage them in conversation but they were much more guarded.
One important thing I have failed to mention… Sierra Leone is in the middle of a serious fuel crisis. The stations are dry and if they do have any petrol, they are rationing and only giving drivers 15liters at a time. The lines (que’s) are sometimes 20-30 cars long down the road waiting for the station to open up again or getting back in line for more fuel. The reason for the backup was that the tanker that was supposed to come with the last load of petrol didnt make it in and got stranded but they were supposed to have another big load come in on sunday. Well that load came in but it wasn’t enough to meet the demands of waiting motorists and it was soon depleted. This directly impacted us as we ran out of gas in the center of Freetown by the cottonwood tree and the amazing missionaries Dave and Lisa at the Hope Center drove their vehicle about 30mins into town to pick us up and drive us all back. It was a blessing in disguise because we got to ride the rest of the way in a car with better shocks and AIR CONDITIONING! Did i mention before that the car we had been riding in all week in African heat had no Ac? It’s not much of a problem when you’re moving but when were in town and its smoggy and hot and you’re not moving fast… Well, you get the “real experience” of Freetown Sierra Leone.
God is good and we actually ran out of gas right by a gas station MINUETS before it closed and they even let us fill up the tank and didn’t ration us! God continues to show himself.
We got back after a great conversation with the missionaries in the car and got some sleep.

Sunday at young life Africa

Sunday YL Africa
Pretty good nights rest last night even though we were sleeping 2 to a bed and not all of us had AC. Woke up to African omelets which is similar to American omelets… But totally different.
Out to camp to spend time with the kids. When we got there they were all already up and playing games and starting their day. The women were prepping for the meals in the hut out back that they used as a kitchen, the boys were playing basketball, and some were playing a game they call Chinese ball which looks like of like tennis without rackets or a net.
We saw one guy harvesting palm wine from the top of a palm tree. It’s a sort of milky water that ferments into wine. They harvest it by tapping buckets to the tops of palm trees right under the branches. It’s a pretty neat process.
We spent a lot or time with the kids hearing their stories and getting to know them and their culture. I really shouldn’t call them kids, many of them were 20+ and some were older; but they were hearing the truth preached and responding in a way that they most likely would not in a different setting.
After we had lunch we went back to the camp to set up for their final meal and send off. If it seems like we are eating earlier than they are… We are. They dont eat lunch till 3, and dinner is quite a bit later but that’s their culture. One last time we helped set up, serve, and clean up the meal. We then cleaned the camp, and said our good byes to the kids as they boarded the busses to go home. The little village kids who were 3-6 years old, kept following us all the way to the car and asked us to take them with us. It was heartbreaking.
We left the camp on a 2+ hr car ride back to Freetown to meet Rob Lowe who was delayed on his trip over. We met him at a restaurant and ate very good pizza for dinner… We felt a little guilty, but we hadn’t had anything close to American food since the previous wednesday (airplane food doesn’t count) so we forced ourselves to enjoy it.
About an hour drive back to the encampment for some much needed showers and sleep.
On a side note, the Internet availability has not been very good so I apologize for not being able to post as much or as many pictures as I wanted.

Saturday at young life Africa

Today started with eggs and hot dogs at 8am which was very nice actually! We left Freetown and drove about 3.5 hrs through town to the young life camp in Lansar.
We did get delayed by a fatal accident on the main bridge on our way to the camp. There was a head on collision just a few mins before we got there so the traffic was backed up while they cleared the road. Henry Fornah bought some boiled peanuts from a girl capitalizing on the delayed travelers and they were pretty tasty! We got to the YL camp about 2hrs later than they were expecting us but we got some good hang out time with the kids, played some games, then we went to check into our room.
Zach stayed with the kids and we went back with Henry and Maurice and had ground keevah Leaf with rice for lunch. It was my first experience with that and it was really pretty good! A little like curry with chicken pieces. Had good conversation with Maurice about the camp and it is great to see how much he cares.
Back to camp to spend more time with the campers, set up for their lunch, help clean up from their lunch, and play with kids! Picked up more trash but there is enough that we could do that for days but that’s the culture.
We had fish for dinner. The pictures to follow will tell more of that story. More conversation with Maurice and some of the guys from YL Africa over dinner.
Back to camp to serve them dinner, clean up, pray and help with the evenings activities!
Over 30 kids made decisions to follow Christ after Maurice gave a moving message about sin and gods graces.
Lots of little neighborhood kids stood outside at the windows to hear the message. they were singing and worshiping just like everyone inside and that was really encouraging
Lots of clean up today so we are all exhausted.

Sierra Leone stage one

By Gods grace we made it safe and sound in Sierra Leone We left Thursday morning at 7am headed for DFW to catch our 11am flight. After a brief turnaround trying to find the “parking spot,” (seriously, its a real parking lot, Zach found it in maps and we left the car there) we made it to the airport.

No real hiccups getting through security. Matt and Nick had to remove their belts and get rescanned, Zachs bag got searched and they confiscated his illegal toothpaste. No big deal, we made it to our gate and grabbed some Burger King for breakfast and boarded the plane for DC!

The flight was pretty bumpy due to the crazy weather system that moved through, but God had us in His hand and we made it safe-and-sound, ready for a little exercise?
We found out that it would take us 12 mins to walk the terminal… so we did it in 10. Booyah… and found an awesome sandwich shop.
The trip from DC to Brussels left at 5 and we were all pretty excited about the in-flight-entertainment. Each seat had a touch screen with games, current movies, music, and even a GPS with flight data! The best part may have been that there was also a USB port for phone charging. Awesome. The flight was long (almost 8hrs) but we had our fill of free entertainment.
We flew through the night and landed in Belgium around 7am. It was cold and rainy but we were excited to be off the plane! We walked around some and experienced REAL Belgium waffles, and then waited for our next flight.
The next flight was about 9hrs total and took us to Dakar and then into Sierra Leone. Another long flight filled with in flight movies and unfamiliar airplane food.
We finally landed in Sierra Leone, made it through customs, and met up with Henry. We were all so glad to be off the airplane that we barely noticed how bad as all needed a shower, but the travel wasn’t over yet. Next we board the hover craft that will take us over into Freetown. The ride was about 45mins but was the last leg in our journey to Africa. From there we checked into the hotel, had dinner, and got some much needed sleep to prepare us for the week to come.

A group of 6 Bethel guys will leave Tyler early Thursday morning on a missions trip headed for Sierra Leone in West Africa. What makes this trip a little different is that, in addition to this being a missions trip where we will serve in the area, one team member will be documenting the trip along the way. He will be shooting video, taking pictures, and posting everyday to our facebook page (Facebook.com/bethelbiblechurch) so you can follow along and pray effectively for the team. Our goal is to better show what we support in Sierra Leone, and give you a glimpse into what goes on during a missions trip!

The team will be leaving April 11th and returning April 21st so please check back at our facebook page regularly between those dates!

Downtown Campus News!

We have some exciting news! Moving forward, the Downtown Campus of Bethel Bible Church will be meeting at the Liberty Theater right on the square in Downtown Tyler! This Sunday at 9:00am we will have a sort of “open house” so you can see how the new children’s space works, get your kids checked in, and get familiar with the new set up. We will have Rusty’s tacos for everybody at 9:00am in the children’s building and worship will start at 10 back in The Liberty!

We believe God has directed us to this new location to better carry out His will and we look forward to beginning this new chapter with you.

Staff Christmas Party!

We had our staff Christmas party in the theater yesterday at lunch and, well, it was AWESOME! Great food, fun and challenging group games, fellowship with friends and family, and most of all, celebrating the birth of our Savior!

Thank you to Donna Ridenour, Kay Rice, and everyone that helped set up and make this possible!

Just wanted to post a few shots of the crew before the inevitable “post-meal coma” set in!

Bethel Christmas Schedule 2012

Service Schedule

The South Campus will have normal service schedules on December 23rd as well as December 30th however, BabySnapshots (nursery) and Snapshots (pre-K) will be the only childrens ministries meeting those two Sundays.

Downtown will continue services and schedule as normal without any changes through the holidays.

Office Schedule

Bethel offices will be closed December 24th, 25th, 26th, and January 1st.

Downtown Location CHANGE!

This Advent, we again celebrate the coming of Christ into our context. Speaking of our context: As we all know, feel, and experience, this world is not our home, and we still have challenges. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will be unable to conduct our weekend services in our normal venue at 202 S. Broadway.

Instead, this Sunday, December 2nd we will have church at 10:00 AM in the Liberty Theater. This is located on the southeast corner of the Square in downtown Tyler. There is ample parking on the square and around the courthouse (no need to pay the meters on Sundays!). We WILL NOT be having any of our discipleship programming at 9:00 AM, but we WILL BE HAVING BREAKFAST! We will have Don Juan’s breakfast tacos with coffee, juice, & water, so please plan on coming at 9:00 AM and fellowshipping over breakfast!

One of our greatest concerns is that the word doesn’t make it to everyone who needs to hear it. We will have a team of volunteers stationed at our typical worship venue so that any visitors can be directed to The Liberty. How can you help?

Come! I know this is a (temporary…one-week) change, and that most of us love change about as much as a swift kick to the kidney. But this will be an opportunity for you to see a really neat venue, fellowship together over breakfast, and be a part of a fluid church.
Spread the word! The likelihood of this email getting to everyone that needs to see it is pretty remote. So, please help by emailing, texting, or calling anyone you think may not have gotten the message. Also, please feel free to use other social media like Facebook & Twitter to broadcast the news.
Pray! God is not surprised, nor is there any crisis in heaven. So, please join us in praying that the Body of Christ would still gather together in joy to ascribe greatness to our God.

Thanks so much for being a part of our family. I look forward to seeing each of you in worship this Sunday as we continue in our journey of Knowing God (2 Corinthians 5:6-10).

It’s that time of the year! Temperatures are (finally) dropping, fall festivals are taking up every weekend, and you’re probably making those important decisions of where to go for Thanksgiving and… Christmas! You are hard pressed to find someone who loves any holiday more than Christmas. They’re out there, but for most, it’s the most memorable time of the year.

A couple years ago, Andrew Peterson and his passionate crew of talented musicians began a concert tour they call “Behold the Lamb of God,” and we’ve been fortunate enough to have them perform this amazing show right here in East Texas; and this year they’re going to do it again!

Jamaica Update #3

When you’re away from home, you can never tell how things will go, especially when you’re on an island in the Caribbean sea; prone to completely unpredictable afternoon rain showers… or in today’s case, thunder storms.
We began our day with renewed strength and a drive to do much work, and before lunch that is just what we did. Work was done on the nature trail and continued on the ping pong table construction, and new painting projects were begun.
However just as it was time for lunch, our day took an unexpected turn. Rains moved in, they were pleasant and light at first, but over the next hour, our team learned exactly why a rain forest is called a rain forest.
We enjoyed our lunch, and enjoyed the serenade of rain on the tin roof of the dining area, and after lunch, we called it a work day.
The sun was right back as soon as the rain stopped and we all changed to head to the public beach, which was another nice refresher for our hard work this week. We played for a solid hour and a half and then went for ice cream on our way back to camp to freshen up for dinner, where we went to Scotchies, a local jerk restaurant. Everyone loved it, even Ms. Barbara and our other Jamaican friends enjoyed the treat!
It was a great way to end another day, and once again refuel for more hard work the remainder of the week!

As we near the end, please continue to pray for our:
1-team energy levels
2-all the relationships we’re forming and building
3-the impact that will be made at New Generation after we are gone
4-that God will continue to move children to come to our gathering on Saturday

Jamaica Trip Update #2

As a veteran of two previous Jamaica trips, it’s incredible to see each time how the Lord remains at work in this place. Most of all, it is a blessing to see that no matter how different every team I’ve been here with is, He always unites us in such a way that we accomplish much for His glory and purpose.

Today the team hit the ground running. Although we worked hard on day one, everyone went into day two with great enthusiasm and willingness to work without grumbling. Work was done on the nature trail, building rails and reinforcing steps. Teams also worked to clear a landing for a permanent, outdoor ping pong table to be built, put together new chairs, and helped to clear branches and limbs that could pose potential threats to camp buildings in bad weather situations.

Ms. Barbra fed us well, and kept us full with happy bellies and good energy.

In the afternoon, we traveled to a community about 15 minutes from camp, called Mines, and met and played with 15 or so children from Lemon’s church. It was incredible to see everyone loving on those precious babies and pouring into them and the parents who had also come. We have invited them all back on Saturday, and it is hard to say who is most excited for that time, us or the children.

Tomorrow we’ll be doing more work around camp for most of the day, and then relaxing and restoring at the beach for a bit in the afternoon and cooling down with some Devon House ice cream, a local treat! Then, we’re treating Mrs. Barbra and the other New Generation staff to dinner at Scothies, a local jerk place we’ve enjoyed in the past.

The days are long and the work is by no means easy, but our God is so faithful to restore us each morning and fill us with joy as we love on and pour into these precious brothers and sisters!

Please continue to pray that we will be:
1. Restored and energized.
2. Remain joyful and loving as a crew
3. Be well received on Saturday at the church
4. Continue to complete projects
5. Continue to pour into and build relationships with the Jamaican people.

Jamaica Trip Update

From Jeff Bice and the Team:
We have had an excellent start to our time in Jamaica. Everyone is healthy and working hard on the long list of work projects. I should back up to say all our travel proceeded without any delays. We were joyfully greeted at the airport and after a fast food stop for dinner we made it to camp without incident.

It is amazing to be sleeping in the cottage that we helped build on previous teams. The beds are comfortable and the fan keeps a cool breeze on us all night. Development around the property and generally beating back the jungle are our main objectives while here. We worked all day on improving the trails and steps that lead people all around this beautiful property. Painting in the bathhouse kept some of us busy. Lush greenery is an understatement in describing the variety of flowering plants that cover every square inch of this place.
After a sweaty day of laboring alongside our wonderful Jamaican friends, we took the short hike to the head of the river that flows next to camp. It is stunningly beautiful; truly a picture of tropical paradise. After a refreshing swim in the cold water we were recharged and ready to get back to work.

Nel Blanken the camp founder has been anticipating our arrival and is full of joy now that we are here. Ms. Barbara is cooking up tasty nourishment for us three times a day. Stephan and Stacey are working with us in preparation for campers to arrive. Oral, Roderick and Lemon are skillfully guiding our projects.

Please keep praying for us:
1. Safety in all of our work.
2. Unity and love on our team.
3. A good response from the children we will meet this afternoon to play with and invite back to our program Saturday morning.
4. Completion of the many projects.
5. Relationships to be forged with our new Jamaican friends.

Sierra Leone Trip Update

Praise God for an excellent trip! Our 10-member team returned safely with stories to tell of a great spiritual harvest. During their 10 days in Africa they were a part of some amazing numbers. Here are the details:

209 – Out of the 345 students at Young Life Camp in Freetown, Sierra Leone submitted their life to Christ.
160 – Out of the 240 students at Young Life Camp in Bo, Sierra Leone submitted their life to Christ.
More than 200 of the campers that made decisions for Christ were from a Muslim background.
43 – Were baptized in the creek by Peter Conteh indicating they were following Christ in the GEM churches.
9 – Completed the first level of BEE curriculum and had a commencement service.

Praise God our team was unified and joyful in their service at camp, and though they went to be a blessing they definitely received more of the blessing.

Sierra Leone – Day 3: No Internet Until Thursday

We had a great day of camp preparation today in Bo. We are fortunate to be staying at the Missionary Training Center with our hosts Alan and Patty and their wonderful staff. They have all been very gracious, and the food Fudia prepared for us has been amazing. Today has mostly been a day of respite before the major work begins tomorrow at Young Life camp, but also a great time of planning and visiting with the camp leadership from Young Life Africa.

All of the team had the opportunity to see downtown Bo. Some of us stayed longer to explore the market and grab a few last minute items for camp. We were very blessed today to spend time with our brothers and sisters that have just finished up with Young Life Camp in Freetown and have travelled here to work for the camp in Bo. Despite their fatigue, they visited with us and spent some time in worship and prayer with us this evening. We leave early tomorrow to a campsite in the county about 2 hours away from Bo. There is an excitement about not knowing the specific tasks we’ll have throughout the 3 days of camp, and great comfort in knowing that whatever it is we are doing to serve the camp staff will be one less thing they will need to fret about.

Please pray for safe travels tomorrow for our team, Young Life Africa camp staff, and the 200+ young people that will be arriving at camp Tuesday.

Sierra Leone – Day 2

The highlight for everyone today was the baptism… worship with our
African brothers and sisters was amazing too, but the baptism in the
little creek was powerful. It was a joy to be able to participate with
these who were publicly declaring their faith and allegiance to
Christ. There was a crowd of onlookers made up of random people from
the villages who happened to be walking along the road, plus the 40 or
so people who were baptized and their friends and family. What a
Blessing!

After the baptism, we proceeded on a 4 hour journey to Bo! we met the
remainder of the crew who will be working along side us at Young Life
Sierra Leone! Tonight was filled with wonderful fellowship as we sat
around a table and shared our hearts and stories! It is so amazing
getting to meet others from the other side of the world who share such
a passion for God and serving youth. Dustin DeLong led us in a
worship time and the Zena taught us a few African songs we’ll be
singing at camp. We ended the evening with a good time of prayer for
the campers staff and leadership of the Young Life camp.

Please pray for God’s love to flow through us and for unity with our
new African team members.

Sierra Leone – Day 1: Finally Have Internet

What a great first day in Freetown, Sierra Leone! After a good
night’s sleep Friday night we were all refreshed and recovered from
our 36 plus hours of travel.

We were greeted this morning by running, smiling children as we
entered the village of Waterloo. Gathered in the Grace Evangelical
Ministry’s (GEM) main office were about 50 children set to hear the
roaring story of Daniel from Ellen Krafve. We sang songs, worshipping
God in Krio. John Carr was up next with the story of the Good
Samaritan with the application question about who was their neighbor.
After a few more songs the kids were dismissed and we were joined by a
40 men who were students of the BEE (Biblical Education by Extension).
The ministry leaders had a detailed schedule for us to follow. Jeff
had the “Keynote Address” and Rick had the “Prayer for the Students”.
It was a memorable celebration for the nine men who completed the
first level certification. They each were awarded a certificate and
challenged to continue to pass on what had been entrusted to them.

A good walk through the villages gave us a tour of two more of the
five churches that have been planted through GEM.

The drive into Freetown was quite an adventure. About two hours into
our journey we had covered about 15 miles in heavy traffic. Then, one
of the vehicles ran out of gas. All the guys jumped out to push the
car off to the side of the street while the driver ran down to fill up
his plastic container with a little more fuel. Back underway, we had
only traveled a little distance when, surprise, the brakes failed and
we bumped the Mercedes in front of him. After a some yelling and angry
looks, everyone was no their way again to the Aberdeen Women’s Center.

The Aberdeen clinic is the medical center that Jerry Putman helped
open when they lived here with Mercy Ships. We had a brief tour and
then were off to a nice dinner with some of the staff from the clinic.
The Country Lodge is one of the most beautiful restaurants in all of
Sierra Leone. It has an amazing scenic view of he city and ocean
beyond. We had great conversation around the table with our friends
living and serving here.

Tomorrow, we will be a part of the baptism service for 43 people who
will publicly declare their allegiance to Christ. Afterwards we’ll
drive to Bo. I’ll update you soon as I can.

Ten of us leave today for a 10-day trip to Sierra Leone. Will you please pray for us while we are gone? The first half of the trip will be with Peter Conteh and GEM our partners in Freetown. Acts 3:6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!”

You may have seen the movie Avatar. It was the biggest and most expensive movie ever made. Some of you may have even seen it in 3D and in this theater. You were blown away. The visual effects were literally stunning. Then you rushed out & either bought or rented the DVD & watched it at home. You yawned a bit. The effects just didn’t seem quite as special. In fact, for some of you, you may have even noticed that the actual story was a bit shallow…and that in fact it was just the futuristic reincarnation of Dances With Wolves. Some of you just got that too… Here’s the point: The glitz & the glam masked the fact that the story was actually pretty weak. God is different. He works an incredible miracle, and then when we are able to see the back-story, we realize that the story is so much more spectacular than the special effect.

The Holy Spirit, and I believe Luke, is using Acts 3 as narrative example of Acts 2:43. Within this example or expression, we get a glimpse of what the early church was like and what they experienced. Acts is descriptive; it is not prescriptive. Scripture is not providing a pattern for the healing of human bodies, rather the story of God saving human souls.

All of the healing events in the book of Acts involve unbelievers, and they are always used as providing occasions for the Gospel to be preached and proclaimed. Because that’s the point: Jesus is King. Peter performs a miracle because of the gift of faith given him by Jesus, and then takes the opportunity to deliver a 2nd incredible sermon. The preacher was on a role.

Peter essentially equates the lame man to his hearers. We are all natural disasters in need of a Sovereign God of grace to give us transformative life. We are by nature opposed to God and actually work against Him. But He has made a way for us to be re-created into the people He originally created us to be: Repent and return. Literally, turn and run back to Him when we sin; not from Him as is our tendency. The healing is the illustration. The sermon is the illumination. We are as dependent on him for sanctification as we are for salvation. Rise and walk!

Voting will convene shortly after the welcome at the first service (about 9:45 am) and conclude 15 minutes after the second service (about 12:45 pm). Voting will take place in the foyer.

Bethesda is a health clinic near downtown Tyler for the working poor. We need a core of 4-7 doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dentists, nurses, clerical professionals and people that speak Spanish — a total of 20 people! Redemption Recipe

Acts 2:37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

Food / cooking shows are ridiculously popular these days. One of the reasons is people love to see transformation and the process of “Before & After.” That’s in each of us (Ecc. 3:11). There’s a latent question that every person has hard-wired: Luke 18:18(ESV) And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” In other words: What’s the recipe for redemption; how does one cook a Christian?

Acts 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Biblical repentance is essentially synonymous with belief. Repentance is not the fear of consequence but rather the love of holiness and virtue. It is glimpsing His grace and glory and goodness and recognizing that I deliberately rebelled against it. And now there is nothing I can do to undo what I did. That’s what hell is, the eternal and infinite regret of not embracing the Son. My only recourse is to repent and rethink my thinking. He’s not just a carpenter’s son from Galilee, He is Lord and Christ (2:36) and I participated in His humiliation & execution (Zech. 12). So now I want to abandon every aspect of my former mindset and pursue Him.

Water baptism is not saving, but it is a demonstration of the conversion that has taken place. It is because of the forgiveness of sin. It is identifying with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Colossians 2:11-12). We are literally raised to walk in newness of life “in Him.” Water Baptism is supposed to make it impossible to be a secret disciple. One who desires secrecy has still not re-thought their thinking and internalized the reality that He is Lord and Christ.

Then, we are entered into one Body. We do worship, discipleship, ministry, mission, fellowship. Church essentially consists of doctrine and fellowship; praying and “breaking bread” together are expressions of fellowship. This is God’s plan for this age.

Many of us still need to reorient our thinking and build our lives around what God is doing in the world. We claim Christ as King, but in reality He is not making the decisions. The Jews had to abandon their affiliation with Judaism as a primary identity and be identified with someone who had been branded a blasphemer. They risked social, economic, and even physical ostracism. People who have identified with Christ need desperately to come together to commune and share the experiences of participating in “the rightful King’s campaign of sabotage” (C.S. Lewis).

So what’s the recipe for redemption? Rotate (repent), Hydrate (baptism), Congregate (Church). It takes a Church to raise a Christian. May we mix well.

Pentecostal Preaching

Acts 2:14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.

Powerful preaching is still God’s plan for proclamation. That doesn’t mean it’s the only way we should unpack the Word, but it does mean that when both Jesus and Paul give unambiguous commands to teach & preach, we should. But preaching must be Spirit-lead and Spirit-fed if it is to have any eternal significance at all. Peter, in Acts 2:14-41, preached the very first Christian sermon ever. It was powerful then and it is our model now. Peter takes the opportunity to explain a current conundrum with the exposition of an ancient text. He essentially says, “this is that.” All good preaching should aspire to that strategy. Rather than merely “teaching the Bible to people,” powerful preaching takes the truth of God’s Word, synthesizes it with the contemporary context, and addresses the latent questions of the hearers. It must matter. It must change people.

Answers for “why now” and “how then” come from God’s Word written way back when. Peter explains the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the coming of the Holy Spirit by preaching from Joel 2, Psalm 16, and Psalm 110. Interestingly, Joel was also preaching from an ancient text as he references Deuteronomy. And what is the powerful message? The Gospel. Peter explains a mystery. The last days began at Pentecost, but they haven’t finished. We’re in them. The end has come, it’s just not over yet. He unpacks what Joel and David could not have seen: There has been one Advent and there will be another. The first advent was catalytic; the second will be cataclysmic.

The Gospel presentation lands with the intended wallop. The hearers are cut to the heart and they are moved to response. So too must we. Peter’s Gospel presentation cuts them to heal them; ruins them to resurrect them. We killed the Christ, but God has made Him Lord. And it was God’s plan. Pride is dealt a death blow when we realize that repentance means we envision Christ on the cross by our own hand and will. Then we ask our Father to apply our sin to our King. He did. He also imputes the full righteousness of Christ to us. What a marvelous exchange. What we intend for evil, God actually intends for good. This is that.

Our sole response is our soul response. We are living in the last days, the days of the soul. No longer is our identity merely national, it is individual. The Kingdom has inaugurated, and indeed it is here in it’s spiritual sense. The earthly Kingdom is yet to come. Until then, we live as citizens of heaven and we eagerly await our Savior from there, and while we wait, we offer our bodies as living sacrifices in view of God’s mercy. This is that.

A team that cares for our friends who arrive before 9:30 on Sunday morning and help with traffic flow starting at 9:30.
Looking for: jr. high/ high school students who can arrive early to responsibly and enthusiastically spend time with a group of 5-10 children.

Special Buddies Team

A team of people who are one-on-one buddies for Bethel Kids with special needs.
Looking for: students and adults who can be flexible and adapt to specific and specialized needs. *many of our friends integrate very well into the classrooms and simply need someone beside them to give them attention throughout the class, not necessarily intensive special care.
Commitment: either a once a month rotation with friends we already care for, or “on call” status for when we have new friends come on a Sunday morning.

Large Group Storyteller

A stage personality that host and teaches the bible story during a twenty-minute large group segment.
Looking for: an enthusiastic and engaging person with confident stage-presence

THE DISCIPLINE OF FASTING

Excerpts from Celebration of Discipline By Richard Foster

Throughout Scripture, fasting refers to abstaining from food for spiritual purposes. It stands in contrast to the hunger strike, or for health reasons such as dieting. Biblical fasting always centers on spiritual purposes.

Scripture Describes Different Types of Fasts

The Normal Fast
This involved abstaining from all food, solid or liquid, but not from water. In the forty-day fast of Jesus, we are told that “He ate nothing” and toward the end of the fast that “He was hungry” and that Satan tempted Him to eat, indicating that the abstaining was from food, but not from water. (Luke 4:2)

The Partial Fast
The Bible describes what could be considered a partial fast: that is, there is a restriction of diet, but not total abstention. Although the normal fast seemed to be the custom with the prophet Daniel, there was an occasion where for three weeks he “ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.” (Daniel 10:3)

The Absolute Fast
There are several examples in Scripture of what has rightly been called an “absolute fast”, or an abstaining from both food and water. It usually appears as a desperate measure to meet a dire emergency. Upon learning that execution awaited herself and her people, Esther instructed Mordecai, “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.” (Esther 4:16) Paul engaged in a three-day absolute fast following his encounter with the living Christ. (Acts 9:9) It must be underscored that the absolute fast is the exception and should never be engaged in unless one has a very clear command from God, and then for not more than three days.

Is Fasting a Commandment?

Nowhere in Scripture do we find Biblical laws that require regular fasting, nor do we find a direct command to fast. What we do find are examples of many Biblical personages to whom fasting was a regular part of their lives: Moses, the lawgiver; David, the king; Elijah, the prophet; Esther, the queen; Daniel, the seer; Anna, the prophetess; Paul, the apostle; and Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son.

Many of the great Christians throughout church history fasted and testified to its value. Among them were: Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Knox, John Wesley, Jonathan Edwards, David Brainerd, Charles Finney and Pastor Hsi of China.

Jesus gives instruction on fasting in the Sermon on the Mount. He states: “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting.” (Matthew 6:16) Jesus did not say “If you fast”, neither did He say “You must fast.” He seemed to make the assumption that people would fast, and what was needed was instruction on how to do it properly.

The Purpose of Fasting
Fasting must center on God. It should draw us closer to God, where we will experience a deeper relationship with Him. Like Anna, in Luke 2:37, we should be “worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.”

Fasting reveals the things that control us. We tend to cover up what is inside us with food and other good things, but in fasting these things surface. If pride controls us, it will be revealed almost immediately. David said, “I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting.” (Psalm 35:13) Anger, bitterness, jealousy, strife, fear – if they are within us, they will surface during fasting. At first we will rationalize that our anger, for example, is due to our hunger. We will then discover that we are angry not because of hunger, but because the spirit of anger is within us. We can rejoice in this knowledge because we know that healing is available through the power of Christ.

Fasting helps us keep our balance in life. How easily we begin to allow nonessentials to take precedence in our lives. How quickly we crave things we do not need until we are enslaved by them. Paul wrote, “Everything is permissible for me”–but I will not be mastered by anything.” (I Cor. 6:12) “No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” (I Cor. 9:27) David wrote, “My knees give way from fasting; my body is thin and gaunt.” (Psalm 109:24) That is not asceticism; it is discipline – and discipline brings freedom.

How to Have a Spiritual Fast
Purify your motives. The purpose of a spiritual fast is to focus upon and worship God, not to lose weight, go on a hunger strike, save money on food, etc.

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:16-18

Begin with a partial fast. It is wise to learn to walk well before we try to run. Many people find that beginning with a twenty-four hour fast from lunch to lunch works well. This would mean that you would not eat two meals. Fresh fruit juices are excellent to consume during this time. You may be fascinated with the physical aspects, but the most important thing to monitor is the inner attitude of worship. Outwardly you will be performing the regular duties of your day, but inwardly you will be in prayer and adoration, song and ministry to the Lord. Break your fast with a light meal of fresh fruits and vegetables and a good deal of inner rejoicing.

Progress to a twenty-four hour normal fast. Use only water, but use healthy amounts of it. You will probably feel some hunger pains or discomfort before the time is up. That is not real hunger; your stomach has been trained through years of conditioning to give signals of hunger at certain hours. In many ways your stomach is like a spoiled child, and spoiled children do not need indulgence, they need discipline! Tell your “spoiled child” to calm down and in a brief time the hunger pains will pass. You are to be the master of your stomach, not its slave. Fasting can have a powerful impact on your spiritual life. Consider a regular discipline of fasting one day a week for six months. Regular or weekly fasting had such a profound effect in the lives of early church leaders that some sought to find a Biblical command for it. John Wesley refused to ordain anyone who did not fast every Wednesday and Friday.

Prayer for Bob and Barbara Campbell

Today, about 340 million people do not have any Scripture in their language. For almost 30 years, Bethel Missionaries Bob and Barbara Campbell, along with their sons Jonathan and Steve, have been serving in Brazil with the Jamamadi, a remote indian tribe. The Campbells have developed the Jamamadi written language and translated the Scriptures into their language. There has been a whole community movement to Christ and now some Jamamadi are going from their village to other people groups to tell them about Jesus. Please pray for: The final editing to complete the translation of the Bible to be accomplished in a timely manner; Fodina, one of the Jamamdi interpreters is recovering from a major surgery she received in Tyler; funding for the last steps to publish and print a Bible in Jamamadi; and strength and good health for the Campbells in order to finish the task they have been called to.

Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Luke and Paul must have swapped some amazing stories. We know that Luke was one of the last and only friends that stuck by Paul near the end of his life (2 Timothy 4:11). We can, by our sanctified imagination, picture Paul explaining the theological nuances of several events while Luke recorded the description with precision. And that’s the key to understanding the book of Acts. It is a description of events that occurred while Paul’s epistles are a prescription for how the saint is to strive. Luke often provides a play-by-play illustration for what Paul will later prescribe. Pentecost, the birth of the Church and the coming of the Spirit, is just such an instance.

Pentecost is a big deal. Perhaps the only equivalent understatement is that God is awesome. In this new mysterious tapestry, Pentecost weaves together pictures, prophecies, and predictions from all the Old Testament. It was a fulfillment of the Feast of Weeks from Leviticus 23 and it was the undoing of the tower of Babel in Genesis 11. Pentecost was the pouring out of God’s Spirit that resulted in a nation of royal priests (1 Peter 2:9). That was supposed to have occurred in Exodus 19:6, but the people then would not have it. This time, God instituted it on His timing by His sovereign grace.

After the confusion of languages at the tower of Babel (Genesis 11), God inaugurated the Abrahamic covenant in which He said that He would bless all nations through Abraham. After Pentecost, God inaugurates the New covenant long foretold by Ezekiel, Jeremiah, and Joel. Scripture is full of stunning symmetry. But Luke’s recounting of those events is for us a description, not a prescription. Luke “slows down the action” so that we can more clearly understand what happened. Luke describes the baptism with the Spirit (Acts 2:2-3) and the filling of the Spirit (Acts 2:4). These are separate events. Baptism with the Spirit takes place one time at salvation, and is eternal and non-experiential. Filling of the Spirit takes place repeatedly through the saint’s life and is both momentary and experiential. The baptism grants the power; the filling turns it on.

And what is the filling for? Luke details the languages that people spoke to proclaim the mighty works of God. Again, this is not intended to be a pattern. What it does show is the practical power that comes from the filling of the Spirit. Paul explains this practical power in parallel passages such as Ephesians 5:15-20 and Colossians 3:12-25. What is the power the Spirit offers? To love our wives, submit to our husbands, disciple our children, and bless our community. These are also mighty works of of God that we cannot do on our own power. This filling happens when we yield to His Spirit. We declare our dependence and release every facet of our lives to His control. This Spirit-filled life is the only life that really works. May He have His way in us by having His Word dwell in us richly.

Kingdom And King

Acts 1:6 (ESV) So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”

Seems like a fair question to me. If I had heard Jesus talking about the Kingdom for three years, and then seen Him in His resurrected glory teaching even more about the Kingdom, I’d like to think that I would be thinking about the Kingdom. I don’t think this was a selfish question, or even a narrow-minded question. The disciples had been instructed to be expectant for the Kingdom. It permeated all the teaching of Christ. But the King didn’t give them the information they wanted.

Acts 1:7-8 (ESV) He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Often, when we want to know, Christ merely says “go.” If we know something, we feel like we control it. We are certainly not in control. What a blessing and a relief! Besides, if I knew the exact date of His return and establishment of the Kingdom, I’m pretty sure I would be utterly useless up until about 48 hours prior to the deadline. OK, 8. Fine: 2. God does not offer us control; He offers us confidence. We claim to be expectant, but the reality is that we can gauge the sincerity of our expectation by our preparation.

Luke gives us a great little narrative to show what preparation really looks like. We track, in the story, from the Mount of Olives to the upper room. Here we see the disciples desperately praying. They were praying to their teacher, friend, and family member as if He could really hear them and as if they could really hear Him. What a concept. How is that really possible in our context today? His Word. It’s how He still teaches and touches and transforms. They depended on it like oxygen. This led them to diligent study. They did theology together in community to try & answer some really tough questions, in this case, how to explain what had happened with Judas. Peter references Scripture (Psalm 69:25 & Psalm 109:8). The eventual outcome of this study & prayer was decisive action. Based on Christ’s promises of the disciples’ role in the Kingdom (Luke 22:28-30), they cast lots for Matthias. We’re not told if this was commanded by God or not, just that apparently God honored it.

So what? How can we know that this same sort of transformative living is really sustainable today in our context?

Acts 1:12 (ESV) Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away.

This is subtle, but this is special. Luke is describing Jerusalem geographically to the reader. Why? Because the readers (in Rome) had no concept of Jerusalem; they’d never been there. What Jesus predicts in Acts 1:8 Luke hints has already happened in Acts 1:12. The Gospel has gone forth. God is getting it done, and He does so through people who are expecting Him to speak, preparing for Him to move, and acting upon that revelation.

But it happened in Jerusalem first. That means we have to take care of the business of Christ-likeness at home before we can expect to make a global impact. Be Christ in your kitchen, then you can address Kuala Lumpur. May we wait well. May we live Kingdom-lives now as we eagerly expect our King (Philippians 3:20-21).

O Theophilus!

Acts 1:1-2 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.

What would a doctor for your soul prescribe? The prescription would be for whatever was necessary for your soul to thrive. Luke wrote his Gospel and the book of Acts to be a prescription for Theophilus, a “friend of God.” Was that the recipient’s real name? We don’t really know so it really doesn’t matter. What we know is that Luke deeply wanted for this one who was loved by God to get it to the point that he was changed.

Luke 1:3-4 Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

In fact, Acts is all about change; about something new. Luke’s Gospel depicts the birth of Christ, the book of Acts details the birth of the Church. Prior to His ascension, Christ provided His disciples with preparation in teaching and example, Presence through resurrection, and power through the Holy Spirit. All of these are available to us here and now. But that doesn’t mean that we should feel a burden to change the world. Christ has already done that. We just have to be Christ in our context. We are not Messiah, we’re on His mission.

Christ only began His teaching ministry while present in His earthly body. He now continues that work through His Bride. May we do and teach all that He instructed.

Relationships are essential to our spiritual growth and maturity since the Christian life was designed to be lived out in community with one another. If you are not in a Life Group, please contact Jeff Bice to find the best fit for you. If you need child care for your child or children (birth through 8th grade) on Sunday or Wednesday nights, remember that we require advance online registration.

There are seven Life Group Sunday meetings this semester:1/8, 1/22, 2/12, 2/26, 3/25, 4/22, 5/24
Registration for Life Group semester child care must be done as soon as possible for this Sunday! We need to know by Friday, January 6, at noon so we can staff appropriately, but we will continue to accept semester registrations until Jan 20.
Beginning this semester, middle schoolers must be registered also.

On Sunday, January 1, there will be one service at 11 am. Nursery care will be available for children two years and younger (no registration required). Preschool classes will meet, but there will be no elementary, middle school, high school or adult classes.

The church office is open from 8 am to noon every day this week until Friday, December 30. We will be closed Monday, January 2. Normal church office hours resume Tuesday, January 3.

Year-End Giving:
For your offerings to be included on your 2011 contribution statement, they must be received or postmarked by December 31. For online giving, please process your transactions before 11:59 pm on December 31.

As result of my situation GEM Ministry provide me the opportunity to reveal my academic pursuit through funds provided by Bethel Bible Church. Since then I was enrolled and happily continue my education in one of the community schools.

“As student ready to gain entrance into university, I owe it all to God’s grace and Bethel Bible Church. I lost my father just after entry secondary school. My mother who was supposed to have helped me continue my schooling was affected with madness. Eventually the money and properties left by my late father has to be used in order to heal my mad mother. All that I should have use to be educated got finish and there comes the end of my education. All other family give no attention to me and I was wondering I will life treat in the future? I was in this frustration when the chance of enrolling me in the GEM scholarship came my way. Here I came to understand deeper things on the word of God. As we are normally called together to study Gods word every Saturday I now persistence pray and the Lord answer me. I thank God for the scholarship venture through which I have completed my High School education and trusting God for my post High School Education.

Our selection for August is Summer of Light, by Dale Cramer. This novel is a touching story about a family with a young boy who suffers from Asburger Syndrome—a form of autism which is quickly becoming a common childhood diagnosis. It’s against this backdrop that Cramer presents a compelling drama touching on the themes of fatherhood, God’s purposes in human suffering, traditional family roles, marriage, family unity, and hope. Worship Center Air Conditioning

On Sunday, July 31 during the second service, an air conditioning unit that cools the worship center quit working. The broken unit has been replaced and upgraded. An additional unit is also being added to the Worship Center to increase cooling capacity. Please help us maintain the temperature by making sure all doors that lead into the worship center, as well as doors leading into the building, stay closed as much as possible.

Immediate Need at the East Texas Salvation Army

The Salvation Army needs your help! They have an IMMEDIATE need for fans. With current temperatures more than 100 degrees, more and more households are realizing they are without the funds to keep their home at a livable temperature. For this reason, The Salvation Army provides fans to help combat the heat. However, as of recently, thier supply of fans has been completely depleted and are currently not able to help those who come to us seeking assistance. The local Tyler SA is asking the Tyler community to help them help others make it through the summer by donating a fan today. They are also accepting monetary donations for fans that we will purchase to give out to the needy. Fan donations may be made to The Salvation Army, 633 N. Broadway, Tyler TX 75702.

We are pleased to welcome three new members to the Bethel staff. Stephanie Focht will replace Erin Richards as the Sunday nursery coordinator. Erin and her husband Joel will be moving to Bryan this summer. Lacey Melinder joins us from Pine Cove as the interim director of elementary education, replacing Paula Meyers who is moving to Houston. Jeff Bice, who has served as interim missions director will now serve full time as the director of missions and discipleship, responsible for missions, life groups, connection and men’s and women’s ministries. Sierra Leone Trip Update, 3/1

It seems the closure to yesterday’s email made the Tyler hotline, so we are choosing to clarify the status via a blog post. Sarah was, indeed, bitten by a mangy mutt. However, her quick wit and cat-like responses allowed her to escape the sinewy jaws of the raging beast. (Retraction: A small dog bit Sarah. She pulled her leg away quickly. The bite did not pierce the skin.) Truly, the dog’s assault of Sarah was a fitting ending to a difficult day. She carries on, unscathed by the experience.

Today was all about the boys. They taught the B.E.E. Course, working through Galatians. Nick, Lee, and Jeff commanded a presence; but most of all, they LOVED listening to Pastor Conteh. Nick said he loved Peter’s fervor from the pulpit and his sound doctrine. God used this to encourage the men that He placed the right person in the perfect place to lead the people of Molambay.

Our day continued with a meeting with Restore Hope (hearing about their work), playing with the most wonderful children outside of the Molambay church, listening to Fatamata share her story of the war and loosing her husband, her parents, and her children, perusing the market for needless whatnots, meeting with Gwen (a woman working alongside the government to improve education, and finally to dinner at Country Lodge, which has a breathtaking, scenic view of the entire city.

Ramatu came to say goodbye. She just left our room where we enjoyed one more moment of sisterhood and comradery. Now, we will pack and prepare for tomorrow’s departure. Although bits of the trip have been difficult, we are preparing for the most difficult portion – goodbyes. God knit each of our hearts to our sisters and brothers here in Sierra Leone. Departure will be hard.

Please, pray for safe travel and continued wellness. Pray for peace between our brothers as they work through church business. Pray for provision for spiritual and physical heath and nourishment. Both are needed. Thank be to our Lord for the provision He has already granted. Praise to him for the churches and people in Molambay, who have already committed themselves

Sierra Leone Trip Update, 2/27

Riding on the inside of a Land Cruiser in Sierra Leone and sleeping in an air conditioned room, it can be difficult to remember the kinship and common difficulties that span the distance from America to Africa. Over five days, God has endeared us to Ramatu, Peter’s wife, as she’s obliged our translation and relational needs and relevance. Ramatu is a beautiful specimen (or in local vernacular, “fine, fine”) of a woman. Her defined cheekbones frame her wide, almond-shaped, deep, brown eyes and pillowy lips. These, however, hold no flame to her tenacious and hard-working spirit and the fervent desire Ramatu has to pour herself out for the Lord. Raised Muslim, Ramatu came to the Lord in 1998. Since that moment, she’s been shaken by the Lord’s redemptive hand, which snatched her from a hopeless, eternal afterlife.

We were not sure if Ramatu’s body or heart was more exhausted as she plunked her body down on the bench outside of the B.E.E. building in Molambay. We sat on the porch and talked to Ramatu. She revealed the pains in her heart. They were very similar to the weight that every mama I know carries, plus some. As a wife to a pastor, a co-shepherd to the congregations, a Bible teacher, a problem solver, a mom and tutor, a nurse and financial contributor, a sister, a daughter, and ultimately, a servant of the Most High, she is struggling to resolve the roles to carry and what God would have her relinquish. She grieves over the time away from her husband and children, but she is grateful for the provision God’s given her with her job. Once Ramatu and Peter move out of the home they share with their 14 relatives into a family home, with travel time, Ramatu’s nursing job will take her away from home from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Once home, she still assists her children with studies. Housework and cooking will still needs attention; and then, there’s always Peter, whom she loves and adores, and with whom she desires to relationship. Now, factor in the weight of the other roles above, and the time she gives to growing in the Word, Ramatu works on negative time.

Our hearts ached for her, not out of pity, but out of understanding. Understanding to some degree…not of others. To pretend we understand perfectly, would imply the difficulty of this impoverished country are not great. That is not the case. We understand as women. We understand as mothers. We understand as wives and servants of Christ. We understand as laborers. We sat and approached the throne of God together and the time was sweet. There’s no doubt, the Spirit orchestrated her sharing her struggles so we will continue to think and pray for her and her family. Please, commit to praying with us for God’s wisdom for Ramatu to balance work, family, leadership, growth and guiding the women of Molambay.

Sierra Leone Trip Update, 2/26

What a fruitful but hard day! About 175 children attended the Children’s ALPHA course this morning and, yes, this was in building smaller than the Reel-to-Real room. Kids happily pile on top of one another. The girls taught and acted out David and Goliath. Sarah and Lori, the animated actresses that they are, rolled on the ground, climbed chairs, and fell to their death as Goliath, David, the king, sheep, and many other Oscar-worthy roles, while Paula seamlessly narrated. They were able to deliver the truth that God uses the smallest to do MIGHTY things in His name, praying they instill the hope of the gospel. You would’ve loved seeing the children singing and dancing to “Just a Boy Named David,” the newest song in their repertoire. This time was a tank-filler for those who thrive on energy and pure love.

The men affirmed the BEE course got off to a great start. Jeff couldn’t be more proud of Nick and Lee, who he says did a prodigious job. They were successful in explaining the role of a facilitator in the body. Each meeting shows advancement and hope in the attendees. These men are growing in the Lord and His word!

The G.E.M. pastor business meeting, which we had the joy of attending, ran long. This made the team late to the Youth ALPHA course (even on Africa time). Regardless, “Chief” impacted the group with a lesson on the master potter and the vessel. How we do wish you could see him fashioning not just clay but also lives. The Lord has gifted “Chief.”

Each part of this group embraces the privilege of serving as servants of Christ doing the will of God from the Heart! It is true joy to be a part of His work, to see His hand, and to walk this road together with you, with Young Life of Sierra Leone, with G.E.M. Ministries, and the other parts God is bringing together.

Please, pray for a spirit of unity and breakthrough for the conflict, which exist in reconciling G.E.M Ministry and Canaan Poultry Farms and for the G.E.M Ministry board meeting, which takes place at 11:00 a.m. CST on Monday. Also, the men preach in three of the churches tomorrow, the team would covet your prayers for clear delivery and receptive hearts of those hearing.

Traveling from Waterloo to Freetown, we saw a perfect picture of the spiritual turmoil existing in Sierra Leone. Two punta-punta (public transport vans) traveled one after another. One read “Jesus Reigns.” The other read “Allah Reigns.” The worship of other gods exists plainly side by side with the movement of the gospel. The conflict plays out in every realm. It reminded us that the battle here is not of flesh and blood but against principalities, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual wickedness in high places. Pray for the continued redemption of souls and protection of your brothers and sisters in Christ.

Sierra Leone Trip Update, 2/25

God pronounced His might in many ways today. The strength of the sun and its powerful heat beat down in a vigorous pronunciation of His handiwork. Needless to say, we sweat. We sweat more than the nationals, who are used to the heat. Oh, and, did I mention, we sweat?! We are so grateful the people of Sierra Leone are not offended by our cache of sweat and malodorous smell. The hours we spend at a standstill in traffic allows Sarrah, our driver, Ramatu, and Peter Conteh (who accompany us around town) plenty time to take in our fetor.

On a serious note, the Spirit definitely equipped the women as they completed the women’s conference today. Several Sierra Leonean women, who are new to faith, don’t belong to a body of believers, practiced Islam, and are in a marriage with unbelievers, attended the conference today. This was a bold move for them and the first time Martha and Yeanoh shared the hardships of their marriages publicly. How tremendous to know the Lord allowed us to use the story of Abigail to encourage women in difficult marriages! They were vulnerable and shared. They live in hardship. They left with hope. Pray for their husbands, their faith, and their pain.

Peter and Albert both shared their personal encounters with the civil war, which gripped the nation from 1991-2002. The Lord’s joy and restoration dwarf the devastation, the death, the incomprehensible suffering, and the physical and lasting evidence of the war. Albert recounted the moment the R.U.F. (rebel force) took him to chop his hands as was common during the war. The machete fell. With only a Bible and ID card in hand, Albert shared that he was a pastor of a local church. This caused the rebel to stop and spare him. The Lord interceded. The men in front of him and behind of him were not so fortunate. He explained (with a smile on his face), “The Lord plucked me out and spared me!” None of us could believe how fully the Lord has healed the mental and emotional scars of this experience. God restored Albert’s great hope and chance for a future.

While the women were teaching and fellowshipping with the ladies, the men filled their day with meetings. Nick, Lee, and Jeff met with Edgar, the chairman of G.E.M. board. God’s hand accompanied them. The meeting was a success. The men were glad to confirm Bethel and G.E.M. are on the same page.

We have currently been driving for over an hour and traveled a mere 3 kilometers. The bumper-to-bumper, sluggish traffic allows time to debrief, laugh and share. “Chief” (Lee Ridenour) provided many chuckles. In a fatherly manner, “Chief” protects the ladies; so as the ladies visited the loo, “Chief” waited outside. A local asked him what he was doing. “Chief” answered, “I’m just watching. I mean, I’m just listening.” At that point he stopped. There was no need to go further.

Sierra Leone Trip Update, 2/24

God provided ease on our final leg of travel from London to Sierra Leone. We easily passed through baggage claim and customs. Peter and Sarrah greeted us warmly at the airport. Abu, the usual driver, is unavailable due to his brother’s illness. The ride from the Lungi (where the airport is) to Freetown provided much culture and entertainment. New national friends, whom we met on the ferry, gave the women (and Lee) their African names, from here on to be referred to as Mariama (Paula), Aminata (Sarah), Fatu (Lori), and Pa.Alimamy or Chief (Lee). Pa.Alimamy is a term of respect reserved for the important – rightly given to Lee.

Our car disembarked the ferry and headed to the hotel. All enjoyed the ride as it allowed views of Freetown and the lively culture of Sierra Leone. Driving to the hotel, the buildings half demolished from years of war, the obvious presence of amputees and polio cripples, and the absence of light and people appeared eerie and unnatural. As the girls sat in the room and decompressed from the sites seen, we agreed the best description of what we saw was not “impoverished”, it is more war-torn and oppressive. What a reminder that in the midst of the darkness and pain of our own lives and culture, Christ is the light and hope.

Today the group met for breakfast and quickly headed out for a full day. Once again, we tried to take in some of the sites and sounds of the city around us. It is truly difficult to absorb and process them at the rate in which they come; it’s nice that we don’t have to process them in order to move forward in the name of Christ. We traveled to right outside of Freetown to Restore Hope in order to look at the facilities for future stays and possible partnering, on to Waterloo, and into Molam Bay. Here, the men spent time making acquaintance with the BEE group and fellowshipped. Meanwhile, God was busy answering the prayers of peace for the women as they led bible study at the women’s conference. “Mariama” credits the Lord for a flood of the Spirit covering her with peace and allowing a delivery of His word. I believe, each of the women wept as we had the privilege of worshiping alongside the women gathered for the conference. There is such a sweetness of experiencing how the Spirit links us together even when languages collide. The day with the women ended well as we were able to take and share personal photos of each of the women attending the conference as reminder of their identity in Christ. The responses of the women varied from embarrassment to thrill. Peter was grateful for the team’s arrival. He says it allows him a bit of reprieve as the congregation interacts with us, and he can relax.

As I type, we are sitting in traffic at a standstill in the middle of Freetown because Sam Sumana, the Vice President, is entering town and bound to cross our paths. Next, we will head to eat dinner at Alex’s. The team is tired, but we are also fully restored in the Lord.

Please, continue to pray for a complete healing for Jeff. His sinuses are blocked and his ears have great pressure. Pray for each of the members of the team as we interact with the nationals and share God’s truth, love and hope. Pray for wisdom and discernment to rule.

Church Library Closing

As part of the relocation of children’s ministry from the 2nd floor of the education building to the first floor on March 13, the Bethel library will be closing. Many have worked or donated books to make this an asset to Bethel families over the last several years, especially Jill Garrity who has led the project recently. However, the growth of the church requires that space for check in for children on Sunday a.m. Effective immediately, anyone who has donated a book to the library and would like to reclaim it can do so at any time prior to February 28. From March 1 until March 6 feel free to come by and take any of the books in the library for your personal use. After March 7, they will be sold or donated to a charity. Sierra Leone Trip Update, 2/23

After nine hours on a plane, we arrived at Heathrow Airport with the entire team and carry-on luggage intact (we’ve been told to keep our eyes open for a few members of the team known for misplacing luggage). The flight was uneventful, which is an answer to prayer in itself. Jeff is feeling better, minus major sinus pressure in his ears. The rest of the team seems to be well too. All are maintaining a regimen of Tamiflu (preventative since Jeff has been sick) and malaria meds, which Lee is lovingly overseeing with an iron hand. Currently, we are waiting for the flight to Freetown. We unexpectedly met up with Sandra, the pediatrician who runs the pediatric hospital in Sierra Leone. Jeff picked out her face in the crowd of people waiting for the flight. How nice to see a familiar face when it’s least expected! Please continue to join us in prayer for travel safeties; peace for all the parts of the travel party; families left in Tyler health and wellbeing of the children, fathers, and wives left behind. Pray that the hearts of all those we come in contact with will be readied for the Word of God, the movement of the Spirit and the love of Christ given in mutual humility of all.

All church activities held on the Bethel campus for Wednesday, February 2, 2011 have been cancelled due to the rolling blackouts across Texas. This cancellation includes (but is not limited to): Discover Bethel, Wednesday Night Live, Men’s Bible Study, Women’s Bible Study, Women’s Prayer and the Women’s Exercise Class.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has instructed utility companies to begin rotating outages to compensate for a shortage because of the extreme weather. The scheduled, temporary interruptions of electric service usually last about 10-45 minutes (hospitals and nursing homes are generally not included in the outages). Today is the first day of school for the new year in Namibia, southern Africa. Bethel supports John and Suzanne Hunter and Community Hope School. They open their doors this year to 107 students from impoverished circumstances. Please pray for the teachers and the students to settle into the new year. Pray that God would continue to open hearts and heal wounds. Pray that education would be one of the keys to helping these families out of poverty. Pray that the Kingdom would advance through this strategic ministry.

A Special Message From Ross

Dear Bethel Family,

I don’t know how long it has been since you noticed the sign at the front of Bethel’s property. I see it at least 10 times a week as I come and go out of the entryway. I know I have seen it before, but I noticed it afresh a couple of weeks ago.

The picture that was chosen to represent the ministry of this church: a tree. A tree coming out of God’s word. The caption says, “Being Firmly Rooted in the Word.” It is a picture that comes straight from the entryway into the Psalms:

“Blessed is the man who delights in the word of God… He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”

This has been a year of prosperity and fruit in the ministry of Bethel, and we praise God for His blessing. Looking back on 2010, we can see God at work at Bethel: More than 60 new believers baptized, launching Bethel Institute with visiting professors to deepen our understanding of God and His Word, and our growing youth ministry that pours God’s truth into young people at a very crucial age. Through your generosity, God has blessed us materially with a record year of giving of $1,309,527 and the completion of Phase I of our expansion project with the opening of the Attic, our larger youth meeting space with classrooms for small group discipleship.

I pray and believe that God will continue to favor Bethel in 2011 as we work to build disciples through:

Expanded Life Groups and their focus on community, serving, and teaching;
Additional Bethel Institutes so that as our understanding of God grows, so will our love and gratitude for what He has done for us;
A greater investment in the children’s ministry to train up a new generation of followers of Christ.

To accomplish this, we estimate our financial need for 2011 to be $1,563,781 for the general fund and $120,000 as an immediate need for the building fund. These resources would enable us to add additional pastoral staff focused on children’s ministry, discipleship, adult education, and complete the expansion of the children’s ministry facilities and relocation of the children’s classrooms to the first floor. December is a critical month for Bethel as our fiscal year begins.

December giving in years past has been more than 30% of total annual giving and provides us with a strong indication for the giving trend for the year. The goal for this December is $450,000 and we plan to base our hiring and building for the year in large part on the funds received in December. So, as you reflect on God’s blessings on you and how he has used Bethel in your life, would you prayerfully consider a year-end gift to Bethel to further His ministry?

Bethel will hold one service on Christmas Eve at 6 pm. Baby Snapshots (birth to under 2 years old) will be the only child care available. Please note: There will be no preschool child care. Please RSVP for child care by registering online here or emailing Rhonda Lauby at texaslaubys@hotmail.com.

On Sunday, December 26, there will be one service at 10 am. Only Baby Snapshots (birth to under 2 years old) and Snapshots (preschool) child care will be provided. The Gallery, Reel-2-Real (R2R), Middle School, High School and Sunday classes will not meet.

End-of-Year Financial Contributions

If you have not completed your year-end contributions to the church, you must make them in the month of December in order to have them considered for 2010. If you place your contribution in the offering box or have it postmarked by December 31, 2010, then by law it will be considered a contribution for 2010. However, if you bring a check to the church office the next week, even if it is dated December 31, 2010, it will be considered a contribution for 2011. Likewise, a check mailed with a postmark after December 31, 2010, will be considered a contribution for 2011, no matter what the check date is.

So, if you want your contribution counted in 2010, make sure it is received by the church by Friday, December 31st or mail it with a December 31, 2010 postmark and check date.
