It smells like a draw from miles this one! Both teams are coming after a successful weekend in their domestic leagues and will bring their best in this Champions League game to ensure the good mood continues. Liverpool have a momentum of scoring goals and Torres looks back in shape pretty much. The problem is that Fiorentina, specially at home, are able to close the game so well and wait for their chance as long as needed. The team is solid in defense and has a couple of players up front who are capable of scoring from everywhere. Pool are not the same team as was last year and it will be too brave of a man to back them blindly on the road in Europe, specially when visiting an Italian team. However draw looks likely enough to put your money down on such a bet - I expect a close game, no more than 2 goals and just can not see how these two will find a one way exit.

Arsenal were so happy in their last outing in Champions League and over used some luck in the Premier League also - it is time for us to see that this team is again very close to be crowned but still lacks quality and experience enough. Last sunny days of the season host one of the most expected World Championship events ever. Just few days after the exhausting Tour of Spain offered severe mountain stages and finishes we have the desert of this season - UCI Road World Championships in Mendrisio. One hard day, 262 kms and a couple of clear favorites to have it. I will skip all the previews on the course and detailed analysis on every rider - you can have them all here. I will take a quick shot at my favorite rider instead - Cunego looks like money in the bank and prices for him are going down so fast. Started from 7.00, now it is hard to find better than 6.00 offered by bwin today. You know in cycling there is nothing for granted but this time the Little Prince legs can lead your bankroll safely to a nice reward.

The course suits him to perfection, no doubt about that. His and his team only concern should be to avoid an early break away group which will be very hard to be followed up and down on this route. Looking at the Italian national line up I see the team is very well balanced and capable of control the race from minute 1 till the end. Cunego will have great support in terms of speed, climbing and downhill skills with Ballan, Pozzato, Paolini and Garzelli next to him. The captain should consume their efforts properly and I can predict a well prepared attack to be leaded on the final climb of the day.
Cunego showed a great hints of top form in Vuelta. However I thought he was going to leave the race a bit earlier. The pick of his form should come in Mendrisio and it will be a major surprise if someone manages to steal the glory. Spaniards are also very good on paper with Sanchez and Valverde on the front line but I think both left their power in Spain and the legs will shout for rest on this hilly, "no recovery possible" course.

Upsets are the heart of this tournament and I think this one should be one. Call me mad but I expect Villa to become a victim of their outstanding performance recently. Lack of motivation, short bench, different focus - I can add many reasons for going in that direction but the main one is actually with the opponents here - Cardiff City. Visitors are in a bad mood after loosing all the points against QPR on Saturday and after the great start of the season things starts looking not as bright as just few weeks ago. A win or a good result here will lift their confidence high and bring the desired power to stay competitive on the top teams (which is under question mark after Cardiff lost to QPR and Newcastle). It is true the injury list is long - McCormack, Etuhu, McNaughton, Adam Matthews are all there - but Cardiff still have a decent players who may bring the glory home and restore some pride.
I see Villa are not so interested of this tournament with Premier League top 6 on the table this season. The team had a slow start of the campaign but now looks well in form. The problem is that Villa will need every preserved power by their regulars for the Premier League battles as the bench is still too short for such a high class team and options are not too many, indeed.
I tip them to approach the game with less concentration than needed which will be properly used by Cardiff City strong attacking line up. It is time to see goals in Villa's net after 2 unusual scenarios.

I am back on the betting basics with more wisdom to be shared, hopefully for the good of your bankroll. In part I we went through how to build and manage a bankroll as well as on how to avoid betting on not known sports and options. This time I will share two things I find extremely important about successful sports betting.

Approach the game, not the prices
I am sure everyone does it. Get up in the morning, a big coffee on the table, bookie uploaded in the browser and than scroll the games staring at the odds and the odds only. After some time with betting and specially if you lost money in a row your brain starts to scroll down the prices only and often forgets about the game and opponents. Ask your self an honest question - am I staring at the tasty draw not on the listed game? If the answer is yes, you are in trouble, man. You are that close from starting to stake a number of draws for extremely big accumulated rewards - it is so thrilling when you put your money down on 4 "so likely" draws and so disappointing at the end of the day when all 4 went wrong.
Keep your mind on the game, analyze the opponents, browse the statistics and the archive in your head, feel it with your instincts if you have any live impressions on the opponents so far and then, but only then, look at the prices for each option. And you should do that every time, on every game and build a discipline of a kind that will save/bring you money.

Find the right value
Be careful with all these easy looking 1.35 - 1.60 priced options - I have learned that from experience but you can save some time and money. It looks 100 % save, like no chance to go the other way, a smashing advantage on the table and when the final whistle goes and 0:0 is on the screen you are close to suicide (specially if that game is the last in your coupon to bring you a massive award). Most of the time it is just not worthy compared to the risk you are taking by only putting your money down on the option (remember, all of the other options are still likely enough before the game starts, pure mathematics!). Of course, you can have an accumulator but my advice is to avoid this kind of bets if you are not experienced enough - the easiest looking things are, as always, the hardest! I am doing it like this - when it comes to Premier League in England I am browsing the fixtures on the official league site first and identify a list of games I am interested to take a bet on. Then I am reading all the related news, injuries, suspensions, etc. and finally I have a look at the prices in one of my favorite bookies. I am selecting the games that responds to the 1.80 - 2.20 rule and the list becomes shorter. After that it is time for some picks by experienced punters I am following on the net, some background and, of course, checking for possible better price across the sports books.

What we have here is the worst defense in the league against one of the less dangerous attacking line ups. The visitors should perfectly suits Hull playing style and be an easy victim at KC stadium, on paper. However I saw a couple of Birmingham performances on the road this season and they were close of getting more points due to a confident defending and well organized midfield. If David Murphy and Liam Ridgewell manage to make it for this one things will start to look bright for the visitors. I can see a possible upset here but still have doubts in which direction to go exactly - primary bet should be on goal/goal option as it is time to see more from Birmingham up front and Hull's defense looks like the best patient. My opinion is that Benitez should be given more minutes to prove his quality. On the other hand draw is so tempting as a point will be a reward for visitors and will put them back on the right track after the painful loss of the derby with Villa. I look at my statistics and the draw should be right here today! I don't know why everyone fancy visitors chances that much. I admit it won't be the scenario we saw already when United and Everton were visiting and goals are likely but Burnley should be considered as a totally different team when playing in front of the fans. Captain will be missing again but this is the only concern for the manager. On the other camp we also have almost fully available squad and one man in focus - Dent is outstanding so far up front and just can not stop scoring goals. But it will be too much of an euphoria to me to think Sunderland can change their mentality on the road so quickly due to just one striker. Yes, they are fast, yes, they have dangerous counter attacks, yes, they score plenty of goals, but away of home Sunderland remains a middle quality team and on a bad they things look so sad.
I am a bit scared of the home power here but will follow my instincts blindly and take the draw at a delicious price. If appears it will be the first draw for both teams this season - chances are good.

I know - sounds like a boring stuff, specially when finds you in a good day with a series of winning bets. But you should believe, things can turn wrong for less than a second, i know!

If you live in London do not try to reach home for the early kick off when Fulham opens the campaign in UEFA Europa league groups. Why? Things look no good as the British side will host many dramatic changes in the line up and rest no less than 10 of their Premier League regulars. It is a long list but I will mention Andrew Johnson, Bobby Zamora, Brede Hangeland, Clint Dempsey and Damien Duff all missing the visit in Sofia. Roy is still hoping for the best but this is not serious when you play against team as CSKA Sofia on their home ground.
CSKA missed first points for the season in their domestic league (0:0 on their visit to Pirin in the weekend) but hold the table under control and are still to receive a goal after 4 games. The reason of such a solid defense is the brililant collaboration between the center backs in the faces of Ivanov and Kotev. Both have crucial influence on the whole team as often scoring headers from corners too. CSKA have no fresh injuries but coach Penev is totally unpredictable on the tactica front and often features fully debutant who rocks the game later. CSKA held Dinamo Moscow for a 0:0 draw in the qualification round and were close to the win.
I just believe the home side is more concentrated on this game, well motivated and will surely find a way to put Fulham under serious pressure n Sofia.

It smells like low scoring affair here and I will take this chance to add a tasty desert to my accumulator bet today. As everyone is talking for the Inter-Barcelona clash tonight let me change the perspective a bit and focus not on the trendy but on the winning bets. The game I have chosen looks like the main favorite to win the prize "top boring game of the night" - two defensively minded teams built around solid line ups in the back, well organized and physically ready to smash every competitor. Rangers will give a fight here and as always we can expect brutal press and challenges on the edge of the fair play designed to destroy the opponent fluency and to open gaps for some fast counter attacks, quick ball in the penalty area and a clinical finish. I saw this scenario so often when Rangers were playing in Europe!

It was such a bad news for CSKA Moscow when Wolfsburg lost 2:3 on Saturday from Bayer at home. Why? Now the "Wolves" are furious and you can rarely see two results of that kind in a row on that stadium. Armin Veh is a great motivator when it comes to situation like this and I expect them to go and eat the grass if it is needed to collect all the points. I give no chance to CSKA defense to stop Grafite (2.25 for him on bet365 to score anytime) and company from scoring and the question is just are they able to score one more. The home side has a decent home record and they just proved goals are no problem even when the squad is reduced by the referee.

Bordeaux are moving the ball quickly and this will answer Juventus style with pressing on every inch of the pitch.
The home team suffers two important injury blows as both Diego and del Piero will miss the game. This will certainly affect the imagination in the midfield and creativity should be decisive against a team like Bordeaux. Gourcuff, Marouane Chamakh and Yoan Gouffran will cost Juve some power in order to be neutralized and sharing the points looks fair on the start of the campaign. Can be brutal physical battle this one and 0:0 is what came to my mind when I first saw the fixture.

It is one of the derbies capable of producing upsets despite the current form and standings. I have a lot of respect for Birmingham playing at home and they are still unbeaten in this campaign - 1:0 win against Pompey and 0:0 to share the points with Stoke. The team is performing well so far, solid in defense and a bit to improve in attack. Birmingham admit it - this is one of the games of the season and no additional motivation is needed. The problem is that Villa is constantly improving after the outstanding 3:1 win at Anfield. They beat 2:0 Fulham at home in the last round and now are confident of getting more and more points to secure a top 6 finish. I have the feeling this team is only warming up and we will see it flying high soon. It is Villa who currently reign in Birmingham, having won the last four meetings and I expect another one to come tomorrow and extend the record.

You may easily take the home win here and you will be probably right. Statistics will support the decision as Fulham is totally dominating the clash in the last 10 years with just one loss here (0:2 last year). Zamora and Andy Johnson are both back in contention and the fact will boost the home attack.
However it smells like too easy bet which can balance the market for the bookies tomorrow. Draw is likely as both teams find it difficult to score goals and practice similar styles of football. It will be a midfield battle with limited chances up front. Everton seems ready to forget the nightmare and a good result here will help a lot. I will skip the fixed odds and take a safety bet on Under 2.5 Goals market.

Wolves are doing just fine at the top level but Blackburn desperately need goals and victories. 0:0 with West Ham at home just before the brake was another indication of a weak attack and this won't be improved as Benni McCarthy is still doubtful. However I expect a serious boost by the fact that Ryan Nelsen, Franco Di Santo, Steven Reid, Brett Emerton and El Hadji Diouf all come back into contention. I bet the home side will offer their visitors a severe physical battle and the risks Wolves usually take in their away fixtures will probably decide the exit.

No more early Christmas gifts from Pool. I expect Burnley to feel how hard is Premier league life when they visit Anfield today in what should be a home banker. I see no value in the fixed odds and will try a shot on the first Goalscorer market. Gerrard looks back in his best and hungry for goals. He performed well against Croatia in the midweek international duty and will probably find it easy to repeat that in the league. As the whole defense of Burnley will keep a very close eye on Torres up front I bet on Gerrard to break first with one of his stunning shots from distance. Over 2.5 goals is a likely exit also but I will try to hit it big.

Vuelta 09 Cycling Picks Stage 13

This will be the stage that will decide on the GC, I have this feeling. Gesink was flying yesterday with an outstanding final meters which helped him earned few seconds and Basso, Evans and Valverde were happy just to follow. No legs to attack? I don't think so - the style of the chasing group was so smooth, calm and confident - I had the feeling they just did not want to get mad on the top. This means all three probably preserved power for today, for the real climb and a massive finish on 2380m. The profile of stage 13 is hard enough even for a climber - 5 categorized climbs and Alto de Sierra Nevada waiting to squeeze every drop of power at the end of all. Recovery will be the key and I think Gesink won't make it.
Evans, Valverde or Basso? Last two have better chances as their teams will support hardly on the way to the last climb and I just give a small advantage to Liquigas-Doimo. However I did not see a single attack from Basso in this Vuelta as he was so defensive minded so far. The profile suits him - the tempo should do the job.

I will take Basso to collect the victory and climb the GC table alongside with Sierra Nevada- bet365 offers 9.00 for such a glory.

Betting Verdict
We are back on the core business of this blog to warm a bit before NBA starts to heat. On focus is EuroBasket 2009 hosted in Poland and we took more to upload first picks as day 1 was needed to evaluate team's form.
Serbia are all around the headlines after they produced a massive upset yesterday beating Spain 66:57. As you can probably see from the result it was the defense that secured the win against the world champion. Serbia acted as a team and a whole mechanism till minute one and kept that way till the end of the game. I bet this team will leave a track in the tournament and what is for sure, yesterday were not just fireworks but a result of a hard preparation work. Novica Velickovic and Milenko Tepic were the heroes and I expect them to repeat the performance and secure a group exit early tonight when they meet Slovenia.
Slovenia managed to break Great Britain yesterday but it was hard enough for them in the first half. Britain missed important players and the fact that Slovenia experienced such difficulties wakes me up for going against this team. Bookies are walking with me and the price for Serbia is dropping down but still looks like a shot worthy.

bwin is offering 1.67 for Serbia to build upon their outstanding victory against the world champion of Spain and I will take it for granted.

Vuelta Betting - Stage 10 Prediction

Vuelta will cost no more pain for a day at least as the race leaves the mountains today and offers sprinters friendly condition on a relatively flat profile. Alicante to Murcia, 171 km - this is the well deserved desert that sprinters might take after two exhausting days up there. What is for sure - do not bet on any of the general classification contenders - they will be on safe in the peloton, bike to bike, thinking about what follows next.
There is a kind of a climb before the final but it is followed by a flat final meters that will probably cost another sprinting madness in the group. Considering the profile and results so far bookies should be mad to open the coupon with such a prices for top sprinters -Boonen and Farrar are 15.00 and 21.00 in bet365 this morning and believe me, this is going to be changed quickly. Both are my favorites to gain the win today as have everything to prove after a nice prologue but a disappointing stages to follow. But who has more power in his legs? Boonen was so close twice in the early stages - I watched him yesterday in the mountains and, unbelievable, but it seems he was doing fine.

I will take Boonen to finally rebuild some pride- bet365 are more than generous for a flat stage profile and 15.00 for him is a must shot to take today.

Basso was not even close yesterday despite the brilliant job done by his mate Szmyd in the closing minutes of the stage. So we need to recover few dollars today and secure our Vuelta bankroll growth. That is why I am looking again at the much easy match-ups market to pick few safety bets and compose what should be an unique cycling accumulator bet.

Velverde v Cunego
The Italian was outstanding yesterday and used properly favorites defensive tactics. I saw one Cunego completely different from the rider who ruined his Giro reputation this season. However I bet he will find it too difficult to recover after such a final storm he produced on stage 8. Valverde rode calmly, confidently and it was obvious he had power in reserves. I saw a kind of a champion style riding by Valverde - I bet he knows he is the best yesterday or looked like one, indeed. No doubt the Spaniard will keep his tempo up and enjoy another successful mountain stage. I was even about to place a bet on him for a likely winner.

Safety tactic today - I will take 1.33 for the accumulator in bet365 and hope Cunego is drinking only water these days.

Basso v Gesink
Ok, this Italian owns me something and I intend to get it back today. The price is not exactly for an accumulator bet but I will take the risk as Basso has no really choice now. Gesink experienced few difficulties yesterday but somehow managed to recover and perform top class riding in the last km. I expect him to stay with the leaders today but probbaly to miss the train in the last kms. Basso took it easy yesterday, just following all the stage and left the donkey work for Valverde's team and then he was perfectly positioned for attack by Szmyd. Basso tried to make it with tempo but it didn't work that way - too easy for Valverde, Evans and company to follow. Another unsuccssful mountain stage for him means no title this year.

I gave last chance to Ivan Basso today and take 1.90 offered by bet365. Gesink should stay away of this deal.

Vuelta 09 Cycling Picks Stage 7

Finally the boring stages are done and it is likely to see how cards will be reshuffled for the GC after today TT in Valencia. I will skip the winner part as 30kms on such a course fit perfectly to Cancellara and it will be a huge surprise if someone steals the top place from his hands. Grabsch of Columbia will be a strong contender but I won't bet on him as the route is too short for his legs.
Scrolling down the betting coupon I found the very last match up offering - Fuglsang vs Tondo.
Schleck’s team-mate Jakob Fuglsang finished 23 seconds down on Cancellara in the Assen prologue and it was an impressive result that can be developed after 30 kms around Valencia today. I even bet Fuglsang could be the surprise package of this stage - I expect him to give a fight to GC contenders, of course, no chance against the TTT specialists on that course. Tondo is not shining and so far is in "the others" group.

I will take Figlsang in bet365 and 1.71 for him against Tondo is a well deserved price for scrolling down the coupons. WON

For those of you who prefer sitting on a League one bench while clicking ignore over all the international noise this weekend, I have a desert to offer - bookies are still generous enough when it comes to Charlton home games and this will not last long.
It appears Charlton finally found steady ground below their feet and Phil Parkinson should be satisfied with five successive league win in a row. The Valley looks like a fortress if we search deep in the history between this two - Brentford have only won once in 20 league and cup visits to Charlton and it came over 83 years ago on March 3rd, 1926. I am afraid this record will last a bit longer with Charlton flying on the wings of successful run.
Team news follows my thoughts closely as Brentford captain Alan Bennett is still sidelined with a groin injury and left-back Ryan Dickson is missing with a knee problem. On the other hand we have deadline-day signings Leon McKenzie and Luke Holden available for Charlton - a fact that may result in changed line up and more attacking mind.
You may say Brentford haven't lost a single game in the campaign so far but I bet the home side will keep the Valley's image and ends their visitors run.

Vuelta 09 Cycling Tips Stage 3

It will be so flat as you will be probably able to see Venlo from Zutphen today when Vuelta continues in what should be another warm up for the real tour. Finally the race is live on Eurosport International and will dominate the program starting from 3 BST.
Who will be the lucky winner of the final sprint here? Breakthrough group sounds impossible considering the profile so this one should be another final 100 meters severe battle between the sprinters. Ciolek took stage 2 and Boonen was close but made a mistake when started so early.
I think he will do anything to stay in touch again till the end despite the fact his team mates were a bit shaky on Sunday. It is tough to decide on the winner and I will need to choose blindly from Tom Boonen, Daniele Bennati, Oscar Freire and Farrar (Ciolek won't repeat the success, that's for sure). Hm, Boonen looks stronger than a month ago so i will follow my strategy and hope for the best. Prices are tasty!

I will take Boonen in bet365 and 9.00 for him is a tempting price on a flat course.

As Contador is taking his well deserved rest and Armstrong is mainly planning and "sharking" (talking to Eurosport, too), the peloton will face its final severe race for the year - Vuelta a Espana 2009 starts today with 4.8 km individual effort around Assen’s “TT Circuit”, Netherlands.
A bunch of flat stages follows so we have all the time in the world to preview, tip and predict before Stage 8 starts in this year Vuelta and the mountains test riders power left in the legs after a cruel season.

GC betting market
I know I will need to tip the winner now but also should emphasize that we can build up a smarter strategy when the peloton reaches the Pyrinees later. However prices will drop down from their current tasty status. Talking about odds I will announce bwin as my preferable bookie for this year Vuelta as i found fair prices there on the start (of course, first rule of betting will be kept - i will back up my bets with some bet365 offerings). Opposite to some tactics I will browse teams first in order to ellect my winner. I can easily see two teams with best chances of winning the Vuelta this year - Saxo Bank are here with their first choice line up - this means massive support for Schleck brothers with Andy on the table; Liquigas are also coming with the best possible selection and Basso or Kreuziger, at last (depends on the performance), will have strong legs on their side, specially in the mountains (Szmyd is my favorite "labourer" this season).

Valverde is a huge favorite after being banned from the Tour and has everything to prove at home ground. Bookies just love him - 3.00 and 2.75 for him, respectively in bwin and bet365 - come on, those are not cycling prices for GC at all. I really do not see any value in taking Valverde now at that rates - I am also too suspicious about Caisse d'Epargne skills to support and defend a jersey. I tip Valverde to leave a track in this year Vuelta but it will be more like few stages fireworks than a CG real contender.
Basso is priced at 6.00 - saw he is not the same rider on Giro and Tour of Poland - and Andy at 7.00 - he is young and top climber but after an exhausting Tour is he steady enough to survive even more severe Vuelta - I don't think so. Again, I expect huge performance by both of this riders but it should be not enough to win the general standings at the end of all.
Evans, come on - no jokes any more.

My most likely Vuelta 2009 Winner
...is Samuel Sanchez. People can miss him on the bookies list - but he is there, on the top actually, Priced at 7.00 in bwin Sanches will have suficient support from one mad and strong team of patriots. Just look at Euskaltel - Euskadi line up - Anton, Martinez, Alan and Ruben Perez, Isasi, Hernandez, Irizar, Txurruka - these guys are tough and when we reach the mountains they ill probably expload in attacks and breakthrough groups, as usual. I can not see a weak point in this group and bet on them to produce a massive upset and lead the race after the first mountain stages. Sanchez is mainly known with his downhill skills but I see him as a completed rider with very well balanced power - perfect for a GC contender.

I will take S. Sanchez to win Vuelta 09 in bwin at 7.00

It is hard to find some value in this one as the odds are dropping down on every market. Considering the start of Burnley and the performance against United and Everton at home it looks like a bit under priced home win. I was thinking of Chelsea-Chelsea on the HT/FT market but 1.40 is for an accumulator bet only.
No fresh injuries for both teams. I expect Chelsea defense to start performing on a higher level as they did during the last couple of seasons and keep more clean sheets against visiting teams of Burnley quality. Owen Coyle will probably name an unchanged line up. No lucky goal to defend to death this time, folks.

Third in a row for Sam Allardyce? I think no way to recollect those 1947/48 campaign memories for Blackburn as the team will switch in a must win mode today at home. Benni McCarthy should return after an ankle knock and score goals. Speaking about goals, Zola has just one fit favorite striker and the injuries and what happened in the crowd will cost his team concentration.

Wolves v Hull

I am tipping Wolves for scoring goals on every round but it went all wrong - 0:2 against West Ham at home on the start, followed by 1:0 loss to City, 0:0 in the 90 minutes in the FA Cup. Too many zeros so far! I believe it is time Molineux to see an open battle between quality leveled sides. Doyle is back and this guarantees some action in front of Hull's net. Stephen Ward and Greg Halford are both fit and that means the formation will start to look as sharp as last season when hit the Championship table. I was thinking of a home win here but both teams to score looks more safety option as Hull managed to produce one even on the opening day at London.
