So Carrie Bradshaw, the New York newspaper columnist who writes about relationships and sexual independence for women, is getting married? Right away there’s conflict for fans of the show - now that she’s settling down, does that mean the woman’s liberation she made to be so important, isn’t? Is she folding on her standards of living the bachelorette life because of cultural pressure? Not too far into the movie, we find out it all starts from a point of financial responsibility; if they split up, she doesn’t want to be left with nothing.

That’s all well and good, until Carrie gets caught up in the culture she fought against, growing the small wedding to a full blown celebrity wedding, putting her now fiance in a pressured situation he didn’t sign up for. When the big day comes, he realizes it’s not what they talked about and bailed, leading to a dramatic fall out and a honeymoon in Mexico with Carrie and her girlfriends.

After getting back on her feet, she goes back to the sacred walk in closet in the penthouse she would have shared with Mr Right to get an expensive pair of shoes; not only does she find the shoes, but Mr Big as well. They realize the problem wasn’t that they weren’t right for each other, it wasn’t that they didn’t love each other, the problem was they tried to get married the wrong way for them.

Ok, now that I’ve re-summarized the movie you already saw, what does all this have to do with diamonds? Diamond stores will tell men to spend two months salary on an engagement ring. They’ll imply that if men don’t buy a big enough diamond, she might say no, or at least be disappointed forever more. They’ll say she’s been dreaming of this day since she was five years old, and has had the exact diamond ring picked out in her mind this entire time - and it’s the man’s job to figure out exactly what that is, or the whole relationship is off.

Men, although size does matter, it doesn’t matter if it’s not right for your specific relationship. When Carrie Bradshaw started looking at wedding dresses, she found a simple, vintage, no-label dress for her small, private wedding. It later grew to a unique Vivienne Westwood designer dress for her public wedding of a couple hundred, which is where things fell apart. In the end, she got married in the humble no-label dress.

Regardless if you’re proposing to a Fashion Week runway model from your private jet, or from the tractor you first made out with her on behind Bubba’s Tavern, don’t get carried away by the commercialism. She’s probably giving you clues. If she’s close to her family, it might be a good idea to go the traditional route and ask her parents for permission, and if they say yes, ask if they have a tradition of a family engagement ring. If not, her mom probably has a pretty good idea of what her daughter wants, be it a designer Natalie K or something more obscure and rare.
