In early February Beverage Digest's John Sicher tweeted that Dr Pepper Snapple Group was rolling out a new beverage called Sunkist Solar Fusion.

Sunkist has always stood as a flavorful energy. Building on this base will launch Sunkist's Solar Fusion — a powerfully delicious blend of tropical and citrus flavors, combining the great taste of Sunkist with Caffeine and Vitamin B for energy. Priced in line with CSDs, this is a great example of how we're bringing value to the consumer.

Sunkist Growers, Inc. filed for a trademark on the name back in August 2009 under the "light beverage products" category, with the mark being published for opposition in January 2010. No other description is associated with the filing.

Sierra Mist Natural and Diet Sierra Mist Natural are closer to becoming reality based on two recent trademark filings by PepsiCo. This activity is dated February/March 2010 and includes image mockups of these new products.

When Pepsi Natural hit the market in March 2009, we started doing some research on trademarks to see if any follow-up beverages were also planned. At the time, we noted the following:

Oh, and just between you and me, back in 2006-7 there was also talk about another "sugar" beverage being delivered from Pepsi. Trademarks for the phrases Sierra Mist Essence and Sierra Mist Natural were filed December 18, 2006, with updates in status September 24, 2008. Might we see a sugar-sweetened Sierra Mist eventually? I bet sales of Pepsi Natural will answer that question…

It looks like Sierra Mist Natural is closer to becoming reality based on two recent trademark filings by PepsiCo.

Sierra Mist Natural and Diet Sierra Mist Natural
(Name Source: US Patent and Trademark Office)

Along with the original "Sierra Mist Natural" trademark (#77066208, December 18, 2006), there is an additional "Sierra Mist Natural" mark associated with a design (#77943694, February 2, 2010). The status on this trademark changed on March 1, 2010 to "New Application - Record Initialized Not Assigned to Examiner." Along with this application is the following artwork:

Sierra Mist Natural trademark design
(Name Source: US Patent and Trademark Office)

This description is used to in regards to the attached design: "The mark consists of a stylized drawing depicting a splash design with carbonation bubbles. The top of the design depicts stylizations of a cut green lime and a cut yellow lemon. The background blends from white with a gray outline at the top to light green at the bottom of the mark. The words SIERRA MIST NATURAL in green stylized letters are imposed over the center of the background. The shape of the bottle is shown in dotted lines and is not claimed as a feature of the mark. In addition, the shape and proportion of the label to the bottle is not claimed as a feature of the mark."

Comparison: New Sierra Mist logo vs. Sierra Mist Natural

Of course, this description and logo design might be irrelevant, given that Sierra Mist is going through yet another redesign, with the new look being completely different from the mockup of Sierra Mist Natural in the trademark filing.

Additionally, there's a filing for a "Diet Sierra Mist Natural" (#77927915, February 4, 2010), though not much additional information is available. One wonders how you could have a diet drink that is also natural if one of the elements of making a drink like Pepsi Natural is the use of cane/beet sugar.

Last time I checked, aspartame, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium weren't exactly natural. This could be an opportunity for Pepsi to rollout a stevia-sweetened beverage, given that Pepsi uses the PureVia brand with Sobe Lifewater that markets itself as a "natural sweetener."

Things are getting interesting here!

Mello Yello is coming back. Well, it actually never left.

According to discussions taking place at Salute to Soda, BevNET, and Beverage Digest, Coke is going to be breathing new life into their long-neglected citrus brand.

New Mello Yello 20 oz. design
(Source: Beverage-Digest. Used with permission)

The new designs for packaging have been spotted in a couple places on the 'net, including some official Coke websites.

New Mello Yello packaging
(Source: MyCokeRewards.com)

This citrus soda was introduced in 1979 and has had its own ups-and-downs throughout history. Anyone remember when it was featured on Tom Cruise's car in the film Days of Thunder?

Mello Yello, Mello Yello Cherry, Mello Yello Melon
(Source: Coca-Cola Media Downloads)

In the early 2000s, Mello Yello Cherry was introduced in response to Mountain Dew Code Red… and was followed by Mellow Yello Melon.

Mello Yello Afterglow
(Source: BevReview Photo Archives)

In 2004 we saw the introduction of peach/tangerine-flavored Mello Yello Afterglow, which we really didn't care for.

By 2005 Coke had their next Mountain Dew-killer lined up — Vault — and Mello Yello once again took a backseat, seeing regional distribution in the United States and disappearing completely from some areas.

Given all the discussion taking place lately, it would seem that Coke is once again bringing Mello Yello to the frontlines with a package redesign and additional marketing support. The company revised their trademark on the brand earlier this year. Vault is still around, but it's been a few years now and frankly hasn't taken off despite the heavy promotion Coke gave it upon launch. The Mello Yello/Vault combo is an interesting strategy, pushing two citrus flavors with varying amounts of caffeine into the marketplace.

1979 Mello Yello logo
(Source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/slieschke / <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/"target="_blank">CC BY-NC 2.0)

The new packaging has been leaked via Coke's MyCokeRewards.com website and closely resembles the original 1979 look of the drink. While the packaging is retro and Throwback-like, it seems like the same HFCS-based formula will be used. We'd be more than happy to be proven wrong on that!

The scuttlebutt has Mello Yello returning in April 2010… stay tuned!

What's this? Is Pepsi expanding their Pepsi Max line? Are they finally stepping up to the plate against Coke Zero and its spinoff flavors Cherry and Vanilla?

Well, not quite.

The company has rolled out Pepsi Max Cease Fire as a limited time beverage, something that Pepsi loves to do for some reason — can I get an "Amen" from all the Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback fans?

Officially, the zero calorie cola "with a hint of lime flavor" will be available for 8 weeks, starting February 22. For those of you without calendars, that puts the production run ending around April 19. The drink will be available in both 20 oz and 2-litter plastic bottles.

Now, I do give the folks at PepsiCo credit for cross-promotion, however. It seems Pepsi's Cease Fire is designed to "complement a new line of Doritos - Doritos Burn, which will be available for a limited time" — which just happened to be made by sister company Frito Lay. So you have a really hot and spicy chip, thus you need to wash it down with a beverage. Gotta love corporate synergy!

Incidentally, the Burn series includes these 3 flavors:

Doritos 1st Degree Burn Blazin' Jalapeno

Doritos 2nd Degree Burn Fiery Buffalo

Doritos 3rd Degree Burn Scorchin' Habanero

The bottle of Pepsi Max Cease Fire features a black label with the red/white/black logo introduced with the 2008 Pepsi logo redesign. The color scheme is accentuated by green highlights to visualize the addition of lime to the flavor, including a green cap. A small half-lime icon can be found below the product name, as well as a 'fire' graphic with the phrase "Cool the Burn" that ties into the Doritos Fire cross-promotion. The previous "0 cal/car/sug" callout that was found towards the bottom on regular Pepsi Max as been shifted towards the top, simply highlighting "0 calorie cola" in a more visible location.

A large part of label real estate is also devoted to the "Cool the Burn" callout for the Pepsi Max Cease Fire/Doritos Burn marketing plan. Next to a Doritos logo, the text reads:

Cool the Burn

New Doritos Burn Flavors and Pepsi Max Cease Fire are the perfect combination of tempting heat and calming cool. With the fireproof formula of Pepsi Max Cease Fire, you'll keep on coming back for more. So prepare your mouth for the pleasure of two highly reactive flavors."

Upon opening a bottle of Cease Fire, you'll note that there is a slight hint of citrus smell on top of the generally-expected Pepsi scent. The color is the same as traditional Pepsi Max.

When I finally took a sip of this beverage, frankly, I was disappointed. With all the hype about a "hint of lime flavor," I expected that in the taste. But to be honest, there was little to no lime actually detectable, with any trace of it only being in the front part of the sip, completely disappearing in the middle and aftertaste portions of the tasting. The lime could have been so much stronger, more on par with the flavoring found in Diet Pepsi with Lime or Diet Coke with Lime.

Also keep in mind that this is a diet beverage, sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium (Ace K), so you will have an "fake" aftertaste to deal with. In some ways, I may actually think that Pepsi Max Cease Fire may have a more negative aftertaste than the flagship Pepsi Max itself.

Ingredients:

Pepsi Max Cease Fire
Carbonated water, caramel color, natural flavor, phosphoric acid, aspartame, caffeine, potassium sorbate (preserves freshness), acesulfame potassium, citric acid, calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor), panax ginseng root extract

Cease Fire contains 5.875 mg/oz of caffeine, slightly more than Pepsi Max. In contrast, traditional Pespi contains 3.2 mg/oz., while Mountain Dew Throwback contains 4.6 mg/oz. Ginseng has also been added as a stimulant. A 20 oz. bottle contains 0 calories, 0 g of sugars, and 62.5 mg sodium.

Given that Cease Fire is being marketed as the liquid compliment to the Doritos Burn franchise, we picked up all 3 flavors of the chip lineup and tasted them alongside the drink. Granted, we aren't a snack food resource here at BevReview, but we are more than glad to offer some comments about these chips.

First off is Doritos 1st Degree Burn: Blazin' Jalapeno, packaged in a yellow bag. I love the naming convention on these chips, following the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree burn labeling. Clever! These chips match the bag color somewhat, being more yellow/gold in visual look. They definitely smell like jalapeno is involved. As for taste, they start out pretty mild but then kick in with the hotness on the backend. As more chips are eaten, the heat just builds.

Next up was orange-packaged Doritos 2nd Degree Burn: Fiery Buffalo. The chips themselves looked a lot like standard Doritos, maybe with a few hints of redder color thrown in. And yes, they did smell like buffalo wings, which was tempting. Personally, I liked the flavor quite a bit, even if they didn't taste exactly like the sauce associated with wings. The average taster may find them slightly hotter than the 1st Degree Burn flavor, but I felt they were on par with the heat. I expected a great increase in flavor temperature, but this seemed like a milder increase. Not a problem, however.

Finally we have Doritos 3rd Degree Burn: Scorchin' Habanero, which comes in a red bag. The red continues when you look at the flavor of the chips, hinting visually that these are hot. It almost looks like the type of coloring you see added to Cheetos Flamin' Hot snacks and the flavor tends to be on par with that as well. Are the chips hot? Yes… on a time delay. When you first sample them, they don't seem too hot. But then things get warm a few seconds later. They weren't intolerable, but they definitely warmer than the 1st and 2nd Degree Doritos Burn options. I'm not sure much flavor actually comes through in that hotness; personally, I probably would select the 1st Degree option if I actually wanted to enjoy taste.

But how did Pepsi Max Cease Fire compliment these 3 types of chips? Well, after tasting a few chips of each flavor, we drank Cease Fire to see what happened. The result was pretty much the same in every situation, no matter the "hotness." Yes, your mouth is soothed somewhat, but the burn comes back. Of course, let's be honest here… a soda is not a neutralizer when it comes to spicy, hot foods… for that you are going to need a base like milk (which is exactly what my wife did after the testing was over).

While I like the idea behind the combination of Pepsi Max Cease Fire and the Doritos Burn line of chips, execution seems to be primarily on the marketing side rather than actual taste experience. Cease Fire is barely an improvement to the Pepsi Max line, despite the hype associated with the lime. Doritos fans should be happy with another 3 flavors to add to the zillion already available. As far as the "compliment" angle, that's questionable. It's a gimmick.

Guest reviewer and natural beverage enthusiast George Tsakiridis returns with another review.

For a while now, Honest Tea has been a well-known name in heath food circles, with a large variety of flavors and using limited amount of sugar. In addition to the many great tea varieties, Honest Tea also offers various flavors of "Honest Ade," drinks that are not teas, but are naturally flavored drinks. Today we look at Honest Tea Limeade.

Aesthetically, I discussed the Honest Tea bottles in my review in my review on the Organic Peach White Tea variety, so I won't rehash it here. Suffice it to say, they are nice aesthetically pleasing bottles that you can see more of at the Honest Tea website. I particularly like this bottle as it features a juicy wedge of lime prominently on the label.

Regarding health benefits and nutrition, Honest Tea does not tout a bunch of specific health benefits on this particular flavor, and I for one, really appreciate that. The main reason you would be drinking limeade is to have a tasty drink or to fight off scurvy. Speaking of scurvy, there is a fun tidbit on the label about where British sailors got the name "Limey." They were given a daily lime to fight scurvy. So that is a fun fact for those who didn't know that. They do specifically mention that the drink is "Caffeine-Free," which I feel is a tad unnecessary because most of us don't expect caffeine in our limeade.

The drink contains 100 calories per 16.9 ounce bottle, and the ingredient list is as follows:

Honest Ade Limeade
Purified water, organic cane sugar, organic lime juice, natural lime flavor, organic lemon juice concentrate, and organic lemon extract

Clearly drawing on organic products and cane sugar, the ingredient list passes the "eye test." In fact, the label does state that this is an "Organic Thirst Quencher" and the usual "Just a Tad Sweet."

As far as the actual drink itself, it looks much like a typical lemon- or limeade -– kind of a light yellowish, milky opaqueness. There isn't a strong aroma at all when I open the bottle. Maybe a slight hint of the citrus, but mainly a hint of cane sugar, if that is indeed what I smell. Upon first taste, I have to say, it is a bit more watery than I was expecting. Perhaps that is because I am used to the typical sugary flavor in limeade. There is a slight sourness to the aftertaste, but it clears the palette fairly cleanly. I do not taste any pulp; it is a pure liquid experience. Honestly, it is less than I expected as far as taste, but again, I think part of this is the way limeade is typically made.

As a side note, and as with the previous review on Organic Peach White Tea, there is a saying on the inner label of the bottle for the plastic bottles. It reads, "'First things first, but not necessarily in that order.' – Doctor Who." So we have a Doctor Who saying after an Aristotle quote last time. Kind of a fun bonus.

Overall, I could definitely see this used as a thirst quencher on a hot day or a refreshing boost while playing sports. It could also be an understated accompaniment to a meal, but not necessarily a drink to be savored as a sweet treat. The flavor is really not the main focus here, which is why I can see it being used more as a straightforward thirst quencher. A solid drink as long as you know what to expect. At least we know that Honest Tea hasn't strayed from their philosophy by loading up a drink on sugars, but I would like a bit more sweetness in this drink.

For a while now, Honest Tea has been a well-known name in heath food circles, with a large variety of flavors and limited amount of sugar. Here's a look at Honest Tea Organic Peach White Tea.

Aesthetically, the Honest Tea bottles have undergone a change over the past few years. Previously Honest Tea came in glass bottles (at least most places I purchased it), and each flavor had its own sort of artwork on the label. They were very nice and the shape had a bit more of an old-time feel to them.

Currently, Honest Tea bottles are more uniform in design, with both glass and plastic bottles having a large "T" on the front with a picture inside representing the flavor. In this particular bottle we see a peach inside the "T" with additional peaches next to it. You can find different varieties and see the uniformity of design at HonestTea.com. The aesthetic is crisp and professional and does nothing but enhance the enjoyment of the drinking experience.

Furthermore, the plastic bottles have taken on a more prominent role in the Honest Tea lineup. There is a little note on the side of the label addressing this basically saying that plastic "requires less energy to produce and ship" and is fully recyclable in addition to other qualities. If you happen to drop the bottle, I am sure you will be glad that it is plastic. On the other hand, there is something "classic" about a nice glass bottle.

As far as health benefits and nutrients, white tea has many health benefits, and as the label states, this tea contains "EGCG. SuperAntioxidant 150mg per bottle" followed by a nice little graphic bar. On the other side it reads, "Studies have shown that EGCG helps maintain a healthy heart and neutralize free radicals that damage cells." White tea is composed of tea leaves that are plucked earlier in the maturing process and contains less caffeine than black or even green teas. The label states that this tea has "about 1/8 the caffeine of coffee" and that "white tea is the least processed" tea.

This particular variety of Honest Tea contains 40 calories and 10 grams of sugar per serving, with a 16.9 ounce bottle containing just over 2 servings. The ingredient list reads as follows:

Honest Tea Organic Peach White Tea
Purified water, organic cane sugar, Fair Trade Certified organic white tea, organic peach puree, natural peach flavor and citric acid

Health food fans will like that it is both organic and uses fair trade tea.

Moving on to the actual drink, the tea looks very tea-like, sporting a rich, caramel brown color. Upon opening the bottle I am greeted with a slightly bitter, slightly fruity tea aroma. You can see the tea particles floating around the bottom of the bottle and the drink definitely gives you an "earthy" feeling.

But what about the taste? Well, it tastes fruity, and slightly bitter, in a "tea" sort of way. I don't know that I can describe the taste as clearly peach, but it is good. It is not overly fruity, but the flavor is distinct and clear. The tea is the main attraction here, with the sweetener and the fruit flavor the supporting cast. I don't think tea lovers will mind it at all, and it is only slightly sweet, and finishes cleanly.

With each gulp you want more, because this tea feels like it quenches thirst almost better than anything else I know. One of Honest Tea's tag lines is "Just a Tad Sweet" and that is definitely how it tastes. If you are looking for the typical sugary sweet taste of commercially processed teas, Honest Tea may not be for you, but I suspect, like myself, most of their customer base is looking to avoid the chemicals and over sweetened taste of "mainstream iced tea."

As a little bonus, there is a nice saying on the inner part of the label that you can see after you are done drinking your tea. Just as there was/is a saying on the inside of the cap on the glass bottles from Honest Tea, the plastic bottle has the saying on the backside of the label. The particular quote I got was "'In all things of nature, there is something of the marvelous.' – Aristotle." Just like a fortune cookie, it is a little something to look forward to reading.

Overall, I think this is a great product and an excellent drink for quenching thirst on a hot day, or accompanying lunch at the office. In my opinion it is quite versatile and for those looking for health benefit, taste, and even fair trade, Honest Tea Organic Peach White Tea is a home run.

Guest reviewer and natural beverage enthusiast George Tsakiridis returns with another review.

Previously here at BevReview, we have looked at a couple varieties of Sunkist Naturals: Strawberry Dream, Glorious Greens, and Golden Mango. In this review we look at Sunkist Naturals Lemonade.

As previously with the Golden Mango flavor, Lemonade comes in a 15.2 oz bottle with a similar aesthetic design. Cross sections of lemons are the featured artwork. The only critique I would have is that the yellow is a bit light on the white background, but it is a solid design.

Nutritionally there is not a lot to say, but the label does state that it is a "good source of vitamin C." This is a bit overblown in my mind, as it contains 10% of your daily vitamin C in every serving. Not that this is unusual, as many companies do this sort of marketing. In addition, there are 120 calories per serving and 31 grams of sugars. The nutritional information is based on 8 ounces, so you can extrapolate that out a bit. It is a bit of a pet peeve of mine that servings are divided like this, because I'm guessing the average person who drinks this will not drink half the bottle and save the rest for the next "serving."

Anyway, the ingredient list is as follows:

Sunkist Naturals Lemonade
Water, cane sugar, lemon juice, lemon essence oil

Very basic and straightforward, I like that. It also contains 10% fruit juice for those keeping track. Being that this is a lemonade and not a "juice" drink, I wouldn't worry about that.

Let's move on to the beverage itself. Opening the bottle I smell a nice, chilled "state fair lemonade" shaker-type aroma. Remember when you were a kid and you went to the state fair and they made lemonade by mixing a bunch of lemons, ice, and sugar in a cup and shaking them all together? That is the smell of this drink at first exposure. As I pour it into the cup, I see a semi-clear liquid with lemon bits floating around. Looks very much like lemonade, so no surprise here. Taking a sip, the drink has a nice sweet quality with more lemon in the aftertaste, but not really that sour at all. It does taste similar to a lemon shaker at the fair, but maybe not quite that fresh. The lemonade is clean and not very pulpy, which some will like and others not. It also clears the tongue fairly quickly, and I can see this making a great compliment to a hamburger or any kind of sandwich.

Overall this is a very good lemonade. I would definitely drink it again. Is it better than other fresh lemonades? I don't know that I can say that it is that it is head-and-shoulders better than other fresh lemonades I've tasted, but it is clearly better than mixes or more chemically based ones. I can recommend it, but I will leave it up to the buyer whether the price warrants buying it versus other lemonades on the market.
