(Harrisburg) -- Architect Bob Hoffman works at the firm Beers and Hoffman, but his mark is all over Lebanon.

He's received a lifetime achievement award from his alma mater, the Lebanon School District, and designed the renovations for 5 of its 7 schools in the past decade.

Hoffman, who works at the architectural firm Beers and Hoffman, is also a former President and CEO of Good Samaritan Hospital, and serves on the Board of Directors at the United Way of Lebanon County.

But he actually was lured back to Lebanon County after spending years in Philadelphia at a large architectural firm.

Below is a video with Bob Hoffman which includes stories about taking a Spanish class with former President George Bush at Yale, and his long-time friendship with Dick Winters, leader of the Band of Brothers.

Below, some excerpts:

What did you learn as President and CEO of Good Samaritan Hospital that carries over to your work as an architect?

"I think the thing that was very important in that position and certainly something that I enjoyed immensely was learning to interact with people of a variety of constituencies. Being in a hospital leadership position is a challenge because you have such diverse constituencies. You have the physicians, the board of trustees, the employees, volunteers, and most importantly, the patients in the community. And sometimes, all those interests are not perfectly aligned. It can be occasionally a challenge to make sure everything comes to a common focus."

What do you want people to think about when they look at a building you designed?

"The most important thing for me is that the client thinks the building is what they want. It is irrelevant to a great extent, in terms of what I think, as long as the client is happy and as long as our firm has done the work to make the client happy and functional in their new environment. That's the key thing. We don't have a style. There isn't necessarily at all the ability to see buildings that Beers and Hoffman do that are recognizable as Beers and Hoffman buildings, because our role is not to have a signature style. Our role is to approach every project individually, on its own merits, solve the problems that are inherent in the program and the site etc, and create a design that is going to represent the program and the desires of the individuals."

How does an architect get involved in their community?

"The environment that I was in, that certainly was one of the guiding principles. My family was very much involved in the community, and I grew up understanding that was a really good thing to do. And I did see the fruits of that in my own family, and I really understand at an early age, in communities it's important to be involved, to really give back in very positive ways to sustain the strength of a community."

What is the driving force of that for you?

"Returning to a community, the success of that community is directly dependent upon the people that are willing to make the effort to make it a strong place to live. And there's so many different ways that you can do that. Whether it's working through your church, whether it's working through the United Way, through the Chamber of Commerce. There's so many opportunities to volunteer. I have always looked at volunteering as a sequential thing. There are very few home runs you hit in that world. It's a day by day, small effort by small effort that is a cumulative effect. And when you have many people doing those small efforts on a daily basis, the sum of those are what makes a community vibrant and strong."

But one thing is clear: the arts can capture people's attention.

As part of our monthly Beyond the Bio series, I talked with Kevin Lenkner, Executive Director of York Arts.

In our conversation, he outlined how arts is such a broad and ranging term, from visual arts to musicians, to graphic designers.

"The case we want to make is creativity is important in sports, business, math, and science, no matter what you do."

Lenkner detailed how York Arts has tried to get a foothold in the community through events for kids focused on educating visitors about art. When he was growing up, he started going to museums like the Museum of Natural History in New York City, but eventually moved on to art museums. He says it's important to start kids on that track as well.

"Keep them being creative and artistic and in love with the arts," says Lenkner. He says kids often drag their parents to events, and those parents end up developing an appreciation as well.

With a small community like York, Lenkner acknowledges they can't necessarily draw the big names (although Wayne White is in residency at York College), but he says it also draws the artists closer, and everyone often chips in to help others out. As he says, "We're a phone call away."

They do more than farming though - they raise cows and chickens, and a whole cavalcade of other animals.

I talked with Coach Smallwood about why he made the move to Rodale, some of the most surprising misconceptions he's heard about organic, and how his life as a basketball coach translates in his current career.

On the job at Rodale:

"It was to be more impactful...I don't know how much higher you can go.

"This was the birthplace of the organic movement, and I'm the leader here now, making good impact."

On misconceptions:

"One is that organic can't feed the world. We hear that all that time. We've totally disproved that. Our farming systems trial started in 1981, the longest trial of its time in North America, growing conventional crops right next to organic. After now 32 years, this is what we know: in terms of feeding the world, the yields are the same. No scientist in the world would ever dispute the numbers.

"What we think is if the conventional growers think they can feed the world, then so can we. The difference is we can feed the world and feed them well."

On coaching's application in business:

"I had a lot of great players, and was successful with it. After 20 years, the whole nature of coaching evolved, and it was time for me to leave. It really is no different. It's pretty simple stuff: everybody has a role to play, and you have to make sure the right person has the ball."

Jennifer Storm is praised for her work on behalf of victims of crime in Dauphin County.

After all, she was once one herself.

Now, she calls herself a survivor.

Storm is expected to begin her new job as acting head of the state's Office of Victim Advocate on December 2nd. Her nomination must be confirmed by the state Senate.

I sat down with Storm to talk about her journey, and I first asked how her past influenced her work.

Field of Screams in Mountville, Lancaster County has been scaring kids, adults and everyone in between for 21 years. The haunt, known as one of the scariest in the country, has been featured on the Travel Channel, and attracts more than 50,000 people a year. Of course, it has a haunted hay ride, but it also has a Den of Darkness, Nightmare Asylum, and more. Behind the happy faces outside the attractions is screaming, jumping, and hollering once people step inside.

WITF's Morning Edition host Ben Allen recently sat down with Gene and Jim Schopf, brothers and co-founders of Field of Screams. The brothers started the attraction almost on a dare, never intending to build it into what it's become. For the full story, click below.

The Green Urban Initiative is an organization focused on helping the residents of Harrisburg build more sustainable urban communities. Currently it’s working on developing a community vegetable garden program to provide assistance to urban communities with the development of these gardens. The group has been officially in existence for five years and is led by the organization's President Jason Zubler, who grew up in Hershey and attended Penn State. While he never considered himself a leader, his reading about sustainable living and the birth of his first child led him to organize a group to try and improve the Harrisburg community. As part of our Beyond the Bio series on people who’ve made significant contributions to the region, WITF's Joe Ulrich sat down to talk with Zubler about his life and work.

(Harrisburg) -- When Jay Snyder was a high school senior in Selinsgrove, legendary Susquehanna University football coach and athletic director Amos Alonzo Stagg, Jr., came out of his house to talk with Jay and his friends.

"He said, 'you know, when you get old, you're not going to be able to play baseball, you'll never find enough people to play baseball, you can't play football, you can't play basketball,'" Snyder remembers, recalling Stagg's high-pitched voice. "'There are some sports you can play,' he said, 'tennis, golf and bowling.'"

(Gettysburg) -- For nearly 34 years, Scott Hartwig has worked for the National Park Service - spending most of that time telling the story of the Battle of Gettysburg.

His interest in the Civil War began as a child, when he came across a 1963 copy of Life Magazine that featured the three-day clash in Gettysburg.

But on his first visit to the battlefield before starting the seventh grade, Hartwig got a critical fact wrong about one of the Union's most storied military units, while shooting a children's film.

"I remember I thought I knew a lot about the Civil War," Hartwig says with a smile. "We came out to Gettysburg and we actually filmed out here, and I remember talking to a Park Ranger here, and telling all of the kids who were with me on this about the exploits of the 21st Maine on Little Roundtop. Of course, the Park Ranger told me, there was no 21st Maine."

The regiment Hartwig meant to reference is the 20th Maine, which legendarily repeled Confederate attacks on the southern end of the Union line during the second day of the battle.

As part of our Beyond the Bio series, Hartwig tells witf's Craig Layne how relating stories of the three-day battle to visitors is almost like acting.

(Mount Wolf) -- Children with special needs are finding unique ways to learn and grow at a York County farm designed with them in mind.

Louie Castriota founded Leg Up Farm in Mount Wolf in 2010, based on plans he drew up in 1997.

"What I wrote on paper 15 years ago, we built, and I think what I did was I looked as far forward at the biggest vision I could take on," Castriota remembers. "Then, I stepped all the way back and I said, 'What do I need to do next?'"

As part of our Beyond the Bio series, witf's Craig Layne speaks with Castriota on one of Leg Up Farm's patios, overlooking the therapeutic horse riding barn.

Castriota explains the idea for the farm came to him during a time when he was working in a career in TV station sales and management, but the project soon developed into a much more personal calling...
