Most Greeks know that the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. are celebrating 101 Years of Sisterhood and Service today.  But are they not allowed to celebrate it with their ear-piercing, high-pitched call?

The following, written in an official newsletter to AKAs, says that Skee-Weeing shall cease and desist, “effective immediately:”

Additionally, all sorors are asked to cease with “skee-weeing”, holding pinkies in the air and using any kind of animals, i.e. rabbits or mice, as means of representing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. These symbols and callings have no meaning and no place within our esteemed sisterhood.

While the case can be made that  Skee-Weeing,  pinkies in the air, etc. were not present in the sorority at the time of its founding back in 1908, everyone knows that these are the common characteristics of Alpha Kappa Alpha culture for the past 30 years (at least). Are the AKAs too good to skee-wee, now? Will they really be silent at step shows when greeted? What’s next? No more pink and green?

Nevertheless, congratulations ladies on your 101st Anniversary. If you hear an AKA Skee-Weeing today you might want to kindly remind her that such behavior has no place in her sisterhood. Actually, your eardrums might be thankful for this memo.

Wanda Sykes

Comedian, Actress, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority member, Wanda Sykes said she feels “attacked” by the passing of California’s Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage in the Golden State.

“You know, I don’t really talk about my sexual orientation. I didn’t feel like I had to. I was just living my life, not necessarily in the closet, but I was living my life,” Sykes told a crowd at a gay rights rally in Las Vegas on Saturday.

“Everybody that knows me personally they know I’m gay. But that’s the way people should be able to live their lives,” she said.

Sykes appeared at a Las Vegas protest of Prop 8 today, announcing that she had recently married her wife on Oct 25th. There were protests across the country today by gay rights activists and supporters.

“I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay.”

Sykes is a graduate of Hampton University, where she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

Schlemmer had to know the same amount of information to join the chapter and had to take the same tests as the other sisters, but more than everyone else, she had to know exactly why she wanted to do it.


“More people asked me — because of my color — why I wanted to do it.”


Schlemmer said her membership in Delta Sigma Theta was accepted by Vandy students, many whom even considered her decision fascinating.


Most opposition came from black students at surrounding schools.


“I had to prove myself,” Schlemmer said. “Girls would look at me and think, ‘You don’t look like me, so why are you here?’”

 Word on the e-streets is that Barack Obama is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. If this is the case, this is news to us here in the BGLO Blog newsroom. The story comes from WBLS radio personality and comedian Steve Harvey, a famous member of Omega Psi Phi. According to our sources, on Monday, February 4th, The Steve Harvey Show claimed on his show that Barack Obama is indeed a Kappa. Others say no, he is not a member and confirmed it with Kappa Alpha Psi Headquarters. What do you say? Has anyone seen Senator Obama  twirling his Kappa Kane? Is this a case of people trying to claim the great Senator as one of their own? Or is this just a bad round of the telephone game? Let us know!
