The first term of the MSc Digital Libraries is about digital library management and starts August 25th.

I am about to order the books I need to read as we don’t have them in our own Ingressus library yet. As some books are sold out, please contact me if you have one or more of the books which I can use/borrow/buy from you.

Now many libraries have implemented a link resolver and a federated searchengine, for many the next step is looking for an Electronic Resource Management (ERM) solution to get some grip on all available titles, overlaps and different holdings, embargo’s etc.

Just found out via the IGeLU newsletter (the International Group of Ex Libris Users) that Ex Libris ’shifting further development of Verde to the URM, scheduled for 2012′. ‘…the Verde PWGs and the Steering Committee are working with Ex Libris on best possible transition strategies for curren Verde users.’

As far as I know there are no Verde users in the Netherlands, so the libraries here are lucky an a way:-)

Good news, a little unexpected after previous messages that my Library School education was not sufficient for application….

“You have applied to the Master*s study programme in Library and Information Science: Digital Libraries and Information Services and have received the notification of admission to the programme. We welcome you cordially to our program and hope that you will enjoy it as well as communication with the teachers as well as with your fellow students from around the world.”

Why was I now admitted access to the course?

“You have been granted an exemption from the general requirement of a completed academic degree comprising of at least 180 ECTS credits or equivalent. The decision only applies to this programme/course, this term.”

Wauw. I’m still happy and confused.

The program starts at August 25 with a module of Digital Library Management. From 12-17 October the first residential period is planned, so I will start planning this trip. I can hardly wait…

Via The Distant Librarian:

Dartmouth College Library in New Hampshire is samen met de Universiteit van Calgary beta partner van Serials Solutions om Summon te testen. Dartmouth is nu live met Summon, ook van buiten de school kunnen mensen nu deze discovery layer uit proberen. (Zonder toegang tot de fulltext natuurlijk).  Er is een link vanaf de home page, of je kunt direct naar de search page.

Sinds ik beschik over een iPhone luister en bekijk ik regelmatig podcasts en video opnamen. Mbt bibliotheekzaken luister ik oa naar de Library 2.0 gang van Richard Wallis (Talis). Qua algemene onderwerpen zijn de TED talks een aanrader. Daar zitten af en toe pareltjes van onderwerpen, presentaties en persoonlijkheden tussen.

De podcast van de Library 2.0 gang die in zojuist beluisterde ging over de aankondiging van OCLC mbt cloud computing. Een aanrader voor bibliotheken die nu in het GGC catalogiseren, er over denken om dat te gaan doen in WorldCat, maar ook voor bibliotheken die nu het LBS gebruiken.

Verschillende vertegenwoordigers van andere bibliotheeksystemen (Ex Libris’ Carl Grant, Nicole Engard van LibLime/Koha, Talis’ Rob Styles en vanuit Europa namens Axiell, Boris Zetterlund) speculeren over de voors en tegens van de belangrijke stap van OCLC.  Carl Grant van Ex Libris noemt deze stap zelfs een gamechanger, een gebeurtenis die de hele markt voor leveranciers en bibliotheken op zijn kop zet.

Niet dat eea direct morgen al in bedrijf is, maar toch goed om ook zelf over na te denken. Daar leveren dit soort podcast letterlijk food for thought.

Vanavond tijdens een informeel etentje met EAHIL gangers werden er ansichtkaarten uitgedeeld als uitnodiging dat van 5-8 juli 2011 de EAHIL workshop in Instanbul wordt georganiseerd door Koc University.

Het afsluitende galadiner schijnt dan op een cruiseschip op de Bosporus gehouden te worden…

Vanmiddag goed aangekomen in Dublin met vlucht EI605 van Air Lingus. Terwijl ik in de rij voor de douane bij de gate D10 stond te wachten, zag ik net een bericht op Twitter langskomen van Guus (DigiCMB) dat hij ook in de rij stond. Waar Twitter al niet goed voor is.

Aangekomen in Dublin, met de Aircoach bus naar het centrum gereden, even samen wat gedronken en toen ieder ons hotel opgezocht. Guus heeft een afspraak met de mensen van de Web 2.0 TaskForce, ik ga vanavond uit eten met een groep van zo’n 30 andere EAHIL gangers. Sommige ken ik al wel. Het is altijd leuk om nieuwe mensen te leren kennen en van gedachten te wisselen.

Sinds enkele weken heb ik een iPhone. Tot dusver bevalt het prima, alleen het overzetten van mijn KPN nummer naar T-mobile duurt belachelijk lang. 7 augustus staat de overzetting gepland. Eea heeft met contracten en opzegtermijnen te maken. Voorwaarde voor het goed kunnen overzetten is dat beide toestellen (mijn oude Nokia die staat doorgeschakeld naar mijn nieuwe iPhone) op een Nederlands netwerk zitten. Laat 7 augustus nu net de laatste dag van mijn vakantie zijn… zucht.

Ondertussen staat er allerlei muziek op het nieuwe toestel en heb ik al een aardig aantal applicaties gedownload via iTunes, onder andere dankzij de tips van mijn collega Bert.

Een van de zaken die ik nog steeds goed wil uitproberen is Twitter. Ik heb er al wel wat over gelezen en sinds vandaag ook een account, maar helemaal snappen doe ik het nog niet. Moet ik Tweetie bv gebruiken of allerlei andere tools?Misschien kan ik een keer met iemand meekijken hoe het gebruikt wordt en welke instellingen je kunt/moet maken?

Volgende week tijdens het EAHIL congres in Dublin zijn er ongetwijfeld meer Twitteraars, dus kan ik mooi mijn licht opsteken. Ondertussen zijn tips van harte welkom…

Ik heb dan wel bedankt om officieel deel uit te maken van de Taskforce Web 2.0 van EAHIL, samen met Guus van den Brekel en Oliver Obst heb ik wel een eerste opzet geschreven tbv het EAHIL bestuur. De nieuwe Taskforce, Guus, Oliver aangevuld met Lotta Haglund en Benoit Thirion, heeft nu een eigen blog in de lucht. Hieronder de aankondiging van de EAHIL discussielijst:

The Taskforce Web 2.0 Blog has just been published. You will find the latest info on the new two members that completed the Taskforce Team there.

Here is what the Taskforce is about:

The latest issue of the Journal of Eahil contains an article called ”Working, Sharing, Communicating, Learning and Teaching with others : the use of Web 2.0 tools for EAHIL Council, Board and Members”.

The original proposal was written in Januari 2009 by Guus van den Brekel, Ronald van Dieën, Oliver Obst and put to the EAHIL Board in Februari. You can read the edited version for the JEAHIL in the first post of this blog. (It is showing a pdf version in a “social publishing tool” called Scribd). 

This is what we finally are trying to achieve:

“The proposal envisioned the following environment where
    * appropriate social networking tools for EAHIL members and member organisations are introduced, explained and discussed to understand how useful some of these technologies can be in libraries.
    * experiences and reviews of different tools are gathered and published.
    * aspects to enclose are local differences and trends between EAHIL countries, to learn what the applied use and benefits could be for any medical library, it’s staff and its customers/patrons. (Comparable to Library Success Wiki)
    * EAHIL members are offered the possibility to explore and play with new technologies, as this is the best way to embrase and actually engage.
    * Working, Sharing, Communicating, Learning and Teaching from and with eachother, can be supported.”

The Taskforce Blog will be a central point where new developments will be discussed and published. A place to get into contact with the Taskforce members and others.

Like a regular web 2.0 tool, the blog is in a permanent beta-state. Content and layout will change over time. Tools to get into touch, email, chat etc will be implemented.

We need to know what YOU (as EAHIL member) think about all this.

Vorige week tijdens de voordracht die Marjan Bakker van het Medisch Centrum Alkmaar en ik samen deden over de implementatie van Serials Solutions vertelde ik al even iets over nieuwe interessante ontwikkelingen voor medische bibliotheken.
