The Ottawa Public Library will be changing the email address used to send our email notices. This is being done to fix a technical issue that has been causing diacritics (accents) to display incorrectly in our notices.

The new address will be sirsi@biblio.ottawa.on.ca. This change means that it may be necessary to update your Whitelist to include the new sending address.

Community Access Program (CAP) Funding

Late last week, the Ottawa Public Library received notification that the Industry Canada Community Access Program funding to support public internet services is being discontinued.

This funding provided minor support for capital purchases at 17 of the OPL’s 33 branches. While we regret the cancellation of the funding, the OPL remains committed to the provision of public internet services and does not foresee that this loss of funding will result in service reductions. In 2011, the OPL provided access to 903,508 PC sessions at its 33 locations.

CAP funding cuts are regrettable, but OPL will continue to provide public internet services.

Bestsellers on eBook format

Public libraries have been trying to make these available to their users but major publishers are presently not selling them to public libraries. Only Random House and Harper-Collins currently allow public libraries to buy their latest and greatest through Overdrive and make them available for borrowing purposes. In fact, some publishers do not sell eBooks to libraries at all.

Why can’t I borrow the latest bestseller in eBook format? Why does the library not buy them to make them available to the public?

Email notifications are available as a reminder for items coming due, overdue,or available for pickup. Messages are sent from Sirsi@Ottawa.ca in batches and as such can sometimes be blocked by individual email service providers or get sent to junk mail folders. If you are not currently receiving your email notices and have ensured that your account is registered correctly with the Library, please contact your service provider to have our email address added to your “trusted senders” list.

URLs and security certificates

We’ve been getting a number of questions about this lately, so here’s some friendly neighbourhood info on the subject:

Some of the URLs (web addresses) for accessing both the Ottawa Public Library site and the catalogue portion of the site have changed slightly over time. Sometimes people have bookmarked addresses in their favourites that are likely old, and therefore if they attempt to visit the site, they get a “security certificate error”.

If you have been receiving your email notices in French, or borrow and place request on items in languages other than English, you have probably noticed ongoing issues concerning the display of diacritics (aka characters with accents). Our Digital Services department has been working hard, both with our city IT staff and with our vendor, SirsiDynix, to find the source of the problem however, it has proved to be elusive.

The website has been responding poorly over the last several weeks, and we apologize for all-too-frequent downtime. While we're hard at work on a wholesale site redesign to improve the efficiency of the underlying code, we're addressing short-term performance issues as well. These efforts include steps to improve the performance of the site's database and a pending move to a cloud-based hosting solution to provide greater server redundancy and uptime. As always, we thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through these issues.
