Gov. Nixon is Canceling Tour of Missouri

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has frozen the $1.5 million in tourism funding that was set aside for the Tour of Missouri. If this funding stays frozen it will result in the complete cancellation of this years Tour of Missouri.

There are several sites that are trying to get the word out about this as well.

Columbia Missouri City Council makes harassing bicyclists a criminal offense

“The Columbia City Council voted unanimously Monday night for a new ordinance that makes harassing bicyclists a misdemeanor criminal offense.”

Will Lance Armstrong Race the Tour of Missouri

Its official that Astana will race in the tour of Missouri. Unfortunately team rosters won’t be announced until August but don’t count Lance out.

The former winners of the Tour of Missouri are George Hincapie and Christian Vande Velde. Alberto Contador helped Hincapie to his win of the inaugural Tour of MO.

Competition is up this year

Lance is back, and teams are brining their “A” riders to races like the Tour Down Under (Australia) and the Tour of California. There won’t be a Tour of Georgia this year so that makes the Tour of Missouri the second biggest race in the US. Second only to the Tour of California for now.

The Tour of Missouri is basically the end of the season

This is an advantage, at least when it comes to attracting big name riders. Lance and other top riders pick and choose a lot of races they will participate in based on how it fits into their training for other races like the Tour de France, Tour of Spain, and Tour of Italy.

Since all of these really major races will be done by the time the Tour of Missouri rolls into town, the riders don’t have to worry about how it fits into their training. They can have fun and try to put another win on the resume.

Lance’s Livestrong Campaign

Lance is using his comeback to promote cancer awareness and finding cures for and preventing cancer. Cancer is a major issue all over the world and its just as important in the Mid-West and Missouri as anywhere else.

Everywhere lance is racing he is meeting with officials and policy makers to try and get them to provide more funding for research and prevention.

Missouri Averages Over 12,000 Cancer Deaths Per Year

The Tour of Missouri provides a perfect opportunity for Lance to spread the word to the Central United States. Missouri is home to two of the Mid-West’s largest cities. Washington University in Saint Louis and the University of Missouri in Columbia are both involved in cancer and other medical research as well.
