The card drawn for this week is the Nine of Cups.

The wish card! What a great card to see this week!

The Nine of Cups indicates that this week, you will feel very happy, satisfied and content with the way it works out. You know that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when everything is working out just as you want it to? Well, that’s the Nine of Cups!

The Nine of Cups reflects happiness in all areas such as health, finances, work, luck, love or relationships. After the difficult choices of the Seven and the stagnation of the Eight, the Cups suit starts to balance out with the Nine. It is no wonder that many Tarot readers refer to this card as the Wish Card as its appearance is often taken as a sign that, whatever your heart’s desire, it shall be granted in the coming days or weeks. Know that you have paved our own way on the path to success.

The Nine of Cups is also about counting your blessings, living in the moment, and enjoying the good things that life has to offer. Start or end each day this week by creating a mental list of the three things you are most grateful for. You will find that over time, you indeed have a lot to be happy about and it may increase your feeling of deep contentment and fulfillment.

This week, Jennifer from the UK has sent in a Celtic Cross reading for our Tarot Circle interpretation.

As with all Tarot Circle posts, I’ll provide my initial thoughts and then I’ll hand it over to you, the reader, to use the comments section to write what you see.

Remember there’s no right or wrong and you don’t have to be an experienced Tarot reader to comment.

The Question

Jennifer asks, “What will happen if I contact someone by Facebook?” Jennifer asked this back in mid-January and noted that she had already contacted the person. She’s still curious to see what may eventuate.

Jennifer’s Tarot Reading

Jennifer used the Celtic Cross Tarot spread and drew the following Tarot cards.

Me now / Heart of the matter – Two of Swords

Challenge/ Blockage – Seven of Cups

Conscious Goal – Empress reversed

Unknown Influence – Queen of Pentacles

Past Influence – Five of Cups

Approaching Influence – Page of Cups

Inner resource or talent – Knight of Cups

How others see you – Hanged Man and Eight of Swords reversed

Hopes or fears – Ten of Wands

Outcome – Seven of Wands reversed

Before we get to the Tarot reading interpretation, isn’t it great to see so many different versions of the Celtic Cross Tarot spread? I haven’t seen one like this before, have you? The diversity is fantastic.

My Interpretation of Jennifer’s Tarot Reading

I am going to go straight to the Tarot cards that grab my attention…

With the Two of Swords, Jennifer, at the time of the reading, was clearly in two minds about what to do. The Seven of Cups shows that she was concerned that she may have been living in fantasy land about this person and the potential of their connection.

It is interesting that the conscious goal is the reversed Empress as this typically reflects a lack of communication or holding in one’s emotions. However, the other side is dependence on someone else’s emotional state at the expense of one’s own personal power. So, at that point in time, it seems that Jennifer was quite worried about making contact and whether she would get the response she wanted. A lot of her emotions were reliant on what would happen with this friend when and if she made contact.

The Queen of Pentacles as the unknown influence suggests that there may already be another woman on the scene – someone who this person lives with, has children with or is married too. This isn’t someone who is going away! Interesting to jump down to how others see Jennifer – Hanged Man and Eight of Swords reversed. This just screams bad timing to me. This person may already be involved with someone else and may not be willing to put that relationship on hold for the sake of starting something new.

Nonetheless, Jennifer has a fighting spirit. The Knight of Cups reflects an inner, romantic mind that she has. She will happily pursue matters of the heart, even if the circumstances are not 100%. She is also aware that it’s going to be a tough journey, with the Ten of Wands. And with the Seven of Wands reversed, she is prepared to go to battle if she needs to and fight for what she believes in. However, she also knows when to give up. If she contacts this person, finds out they are involved with someone else, then she will give in. But at least she gives in knowing that she has tried.

Summary

Overall, I suspect that Jennifer will find out that this person is already involved with someone else and the timing is not right to start a friendship on Facebook or anything else. This person may still be very friendly, but the boundaries will be very clear from the outset.

I admire Jennifer’s courage in taking action to get in touch with this person, and to find out for herself whether this will work out or not.

What’s Your Read?

Over to you! How would you interpret these cards and the spread overall? What is your advice to Jennifer?

The Knight of Swords charges forward with great momentum and apparently without any regard to the dangers he may encounter. He is filled with ambition and fierce energy, and once he sets his sights on a goal, there is no stopping him.

Reversed, this Knight is incredibly impatient, impulsive and bursting with energy. He has so much energy but so little direction that this results in them making rash decisions and pulling down others with them. His thoughts are scattered and all over the place.

This Knight may represent yourself this coming week. Be mindful of rushing into things without thinking them through. Be careful of what you say in the heat of the moment and avoid making snap decisions.

Alternatively, this Knight may represent someone in your life right now. If you encounter this type of person, you need to be very wary and make sure that you do not get caught up in all the hype and energy that surrounds them. It will be easily done for this person is a greater talker and is full of ideas and thoughts about future opportunities. Do not get sucked in to their whirlwind of activity and energy!

As with all Tarot Circle posts, I’ll provide my initial thoughts and then I’ll hand it over to you, the reader, to use the comments section to write what you see.

Remember there’s no right or wrong and you don’t have to be an experienced Tarot reader to comment.

The Question

Evan asks,

“Should I do this course to become a medical receptionist?”

Evan’s Tarot Reading

Evan used the Celtic Cross Tarot spread and drew the following Tarot cards.

Significator – Four of Cups

Crossing card – Ten of Pentacles

Past – Nine of Pentacles

Future – Ten of Wands

Sub conscious – Nine of Wands

Conscious – Temperance

Inner feelings – Eight of Wands

External influences – Seven Wands

Hopes and fears – Eight of Pentacles

Outcome – Six of Cups

My Interpretation of Evan’s Tarot Reading

What a nice, clear reading!

So, the Four of Cups shows that Evan is currently in contemplation phase where there is the offer of becoming a medical receptionist but he is taking this time to really think it through and decide whether it’s the right path.

He may be worried about whether he’s going to make enough money from it or if this type of job will set him up well for the long-term (Ten of Pentacles). It also looks like there is still a lot of hard work ahead of him before he will be able to reap the rewards of getting into this field (Ten of Wands).

However, I would be encouraging Evan to just go for it. Why? Look at how many Wands cards are in this reading. This isn’t just about the money (Pentacles) but about where Evan’s passions lie. Wands are very spirited, passionate and enthusiastic cards and in a career reading, they can indicate more of a ‘calling’. Becoming a medical receptionist is something that Evan feels passionate about and even though there may be some concerns about money, he will make it work because he has passion behind him.

On the inside, he is feeling a lot of energy and movement around this potential career path (Eight of Wands). There is an impetus to act and to do something, and this feels like the right path. Consciously, it also feels like the right decision with the Temperance card showing a good balance between passions and reality (Wands and Pentacles).

That said, there may still be some fears around the amount of work that is required between now and getting a job in the field and whether Evan can get through it (Nine of Wands). But with the presence of the Eight of Pentacles, I sense that since Evan’s heart is in this, he will work hard and will accomplish what he needs to. This is also confirmed by the number of Eights, Nines and Tens in the reading. These numbers signifying nearing completion, as opposed to Aces, Twos and Threes which are about new journeys.

The Six of Cups is also a very positive sign that he will feel at home doing this course. There may even be an opportunity to join old school friends or move back to a place where he grew up in order to do the course.

Summary

While Evan naturally has some concerns about this possible career path and course, I feel that his passion is there and that this is his ‘calling’ right now. He knows that it is not going to be an easy path, but he is prepared to work hard and commit to the course so that he can start work as soon as possible. He seems very committed to that end state given all of those Eights, Nines and Tens in the reading. So, my advice from the cards would be – Go for it!

What’s Your Read?

Over to you! How would you interpret these cards and the spread overall? What is your advice to Evan?

Post your response in the comments below. Use this as an opportunity to hone your Tarot reading skills or to get your opinion out there!

Have you ever gone to do a relationship Tarot reading, only to find a layout full of Pentacles cards? Or what about a work-related Tarot reading where half the reading is made up of Cups cards?

Often, when we read on a specific topic, we expect to see Tarot cards that confirm or emphasise certain messages. But what happens when the Tarot seemingly throws a curve ball? What happens when we get a bunch of Tarot cards that just don’t seem to match up to what we’re asking about?

Rest assured, it isn’t the Universe trying to confuse you! Instead, the appearance of ‘unexpected’ Tarot suits in your reading holds special significance and is something which needs your attention.

Back to Basics – The Tarot Suits

One of the first things we learn when we explore the Tarot cards are the general meanings for each of the Tarot Suits. We learn that:

Cups = Emotions, feelings, relationships and matters of the heart

Pentacles = Career, work, finances and practical matters

Swords = The intellect, conversation, truth and matters of the mind

Wands = Motivation, energy, inspiration and matters of the soul

So, when we do a relationship reading, it would make sense to see lots of Cups cards. Or when we do a personal development reading, it would make sense to see lots of Wands cards.

But what often happens is that it doesn’t work this way. Instead, we end up with a relationship reading full of Pentacles cards or a personal development reading full of Swords cards.

Deciphering the Tarot Suits in Different Readings

The beauty of the Tarot is that it often highlights issues or concerns that we are not yet aware of. It brings to the surface that which is sitting within our subconscious mind, so that we can then be more consciously aware of what is influencing us and shaping our thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

So, when you see a lot of Pentacles cards in a relationship reading, stop and ask yourself how money or career is impacting your relationship. Is there something you have been missing here? Why is money taking precedence over your deeper feelings for one another?

Or, if you see a bunch of Swords cards in your personal development reading, ask yourself how your intellect and your mind may be affecting your spiritual connection. Are you trying to rationalise and critique your life when you really need to be tapping into your inner psyche? What truths do you need to find as you develop and grow yourself?

Don’t be put off when you see an unexpected Suit come up in your Tarot readings. Instead, see it as an opportunity to think differently about your situation. Ask yourself (or your client) some challenging questions about how these unexpected factors may be impacting you. Bringing these issues to a conscious awareness will be very powerful in helping you to make the changes you want and need.

Your Task: Brainstorm the Meanings of the Tarot Suits in Various Situations

If you are struggling with how to interpret unexpected Tarot Suits in your readings, then why not dedicate some time now to mapping out your ideas.

Print and complete the following table and feel free to share your insights with other readers below in the comments.

Upright, the Ace of Swords is about mental clarity, decision-making and moving forward with ideas. Reversed, this card reflects a lack clarity around your true goals and aspirations. You may not have a complete understanding of the task at hand, and as such, you need to spend more time clearly defining what it is you want in life. Set yourself SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound) so you can become much clearer on what it is you want and how to get there.

The Ace of Swords reversed also reflects an idea or concept which you have not yet put into action, perhaps because you are unsure about whether or not it will bring the results you want. You are having difficulty with the early stages of formulating an idea, a plan or your goals. You may have too many ideas on the go and are unable to make a decision, creating challenges with completion.

Finally, be aware of the potential for clouded judgment and lack of mental clarity around a specific situation. You may be missing important information or evidence that will assist you in your predicament, so invest your time and energy into seeking out the truth, rather than simply taking things at face value.

As with all Tarot Circle posts, I’ll provide my initial thoughts and then I’ll hand it over to you, the reader, to use the comments section to write what you see.

Remember there’s no right or wrong and you don’t have to be an experienced Tarot reader to comment.

The Question

Annabelle asks, “What guidance can I have about the guy at work that is on my mind that I have chemistry with, what to do next as a tricky situation?”

Annabelle’s Tarot Reading

Annabelle used the Celtic Cross Tarot spread and drew the following Tarot cards.

The present – Five of Wands

The immediate challenge/blockage – Tower

Conscious Goal – Six of Wands

Unknown Influence – Ten of Cups

Past Influence – Strength reversed

Immediate Future – Fool reversed

Factors or inner feelings affecting the situation – Hanged Man reversed

External influences – Nine of Pentacles

Hopes or fears – Ten of Pentacles

Final outcome – Hermit reversed

My Interpretation of Annabelle’s Tarot Reading

With the Five of Wands, Annabelle is feeling a lot of internal conflict when it comes to this potential relationship or love interest. She may be battling inside her own mind about whether or not to pursue this, knowing that there are many complexities involved. In fact, with the Tower, she’s quite worried that getting involved would mean some significant changes and shake-ups that she may not yet be prepared for.

Her conscious goal is to do what’s right by both herself and this guy in order to protect their reputation and image at work (Six of Wands). She may be catching wind, however, that he is involved with someone else or perhaps even married (Ten of Cups). While she knows inherently that she should wait until the situation is more favourable, she is growing restless (Hanged Man reversed). I wouldn’t be surprised if Annabelle has already acted, impatient about having to wait around for the right time (Hanged Man reversed and Fool reversed). Trouble is, though, she may regret doing this because she didn’t really think it through and has now found herself in an even more complicated situation.

If Annabelle hasn’t acted, yet feels the impulse to do so, my advice would be to wait because acting now is likely to lead to unintended outcomes.

The work situation is also playing on her mind with both the Nine and Ten of Pentacles. She may be concerned about how this potential love interest may impact on her stability and reputation at work. He may be more senior to her since we’re dealing with a Nine and Ten, not a Two or Three. Or she has already established her career and reputation such that she doesn’t want to put this in jeopardy.

At the end of the day, the Hermit reversed indicates that Annabelle is inclined to do something without thinking it through. I get the feeling that she is not listening carefully enough to her inner voice, her moral compass and her spiritual self. Instead, she is prone to reckless behaviour that may not lead to the best outcomes in the long-term. Again, my advice would be to resist the temptation to act, and to spend the next phase reflecting inwardly about whether or not this is the right relationship to pursue.

What’s Your Read?

Over to you! How would you interpret these cards and the spread overall? What is your advice to Annabelle?

Post your response in the comments below. Use this as an opportunity to hone your Tarot reading skills or to get your opinion out there!

If you are interested in having your own Tarot reading interpreted, you are welcome to send it in, but please note there is currently a 6+ week waiting period.

Step 1: Select a Tarot Card

This is the easy bit! You might want to randomly select a Tarot card or you may want to take a more structured approach beginning with the first card of the deck (the Fool) or the first card in one of the Suits.

Step 2: Study the Tarot Card

Look at the Tarot card and study it in detail for 5 minutes.

What is your first impression of the card? How do you feel when you see the card? What thoughts or feelings immediately come to mind?

What images stand out to you? Are there people in the card and what are they doing, thinking or feeling? What symbols are represented? What colours do you notice?

Take note of your initial thoughts and observations – we’ll use them later for the Tarot Card Profile.

Step 3: Read about the Tarot Card

Look up the Tarot card in at least 2 or 3 resources (e.g. books and websites) and read about the traditional meanings of the cards.

You may notice that each resource has a slightly different angle. What meanings resonate best for you? What make the most sense?

Again, take note of what stands out to you from reading these resources.

Step 4: Complete the Tarot Card Profile

Now it’s time to prepare your Tarot Card Profile. Here are some tips on how to complete each section.

Card and Date

Write down the Tarot card you have selected and what date you are reviewing the card.

Element

Take note of the element associated with the card and what it means for that card. You can find out more about elemental associations through my online Tarot card meanings.

I haven’t covered the elemental associations for the Major Arcana as these are complex and often a point of contension between readers. If you want to read more, I recommend Raven’s Tarot website.

Numerological Association

Note the number associated with the card and what it means. Read more about Tarot and numerology.

Keywords

Record 3-4 keywords for your selected Tarot card. Read more about how to generate your own Tarot card meaning keywords.

Key Phrases or Favourite Quotes

Exploring and reflecting upon common quotes can be a great way to bring the key messages of your Tarot cards alive.

I recommend working with your keywords and even key phrases associated with each Tarot card. Then, head on over to a quotation website such as www.brainyquote.com or www.thinkexist.com and start searching for related quotes!

Alternatively, you may choose to let the quotes come to you. As you read various books, keep a note of inspirational quotes that add meaning to your Tarot cards, and jot them down in your Tarot Card Profile over time.

Story and Description

The Tarot card description is your opportunity to explore the symbolism and imagery in a specific card. Furthermore, the Tarot card will often depict a ‘story’ that then informs the general meaning for the card. So, it is important to pay attention to these visual elements.

Study the specific Tarot card again for a few minutes. What do you notice?

Is there a person in the card? What does their expression tell you? What direction are they facing? What are they doing?

What symbols are used in the card, and what do these symbols mean?

What colours are used in the card, and what do these colours signify?

Now, look at what is happening in the card. What ‘story’ is being told?

General Tarot Card Meanings

This is really the ‘core’ of your Tarot study – understanding and interpreting the Tarot card meanings.

Begin with your own observations of the card that you noted earlier when you first looked at the card. What was your first impression of the card? How did you feel when you see the card? Which images stood out to you? What do you think these mean?

Take an even closer look. What characters, symbols, or colours have you missed? How do these change your view of the card?

Next, research the Tarot card meanings in your resources (books, eBooks, online, etc.). What card meanings stand out to you? What feels most relevant?

Consider, too, the positive side as well as the negative or ‘shadow’ side of the card. All cards have both sides to them (yes, even the Tower can be a positive card!!).

Finally, consider a personal experience, a Tarot reading or a person you know who reminds you of the card you are studying.

Jot down your initial thoughts. Then, throughout the day / week / month / year, spend some more time reflecting on how the card relates to your personal experiences over that period of time.

Use your Tarot readings, too, to explore the meaning of the card. What significance does the card have in a particular reading, or a series of readings? For example, I found that the Three of Cups reversed nearly always came up in readings where there was an affair or a third party involved in a relationship. I now attribute that specific meaning to the card.

Context-Specific Meanings

Generating context-specific meanings for each card can enhance your Tarot reading skills immensely. For your specific card, write down what that card means for career, work, finances, relationships, personality types, health and well-being, spirituality and any other area that is important to you.

Career, Work and Finances:

What does the card mean if you are searching for work? What does it tell you about your current work situation?

What career paths may be associated with the card?

What does the card tell you about your financial situation?

Personality Types:

Imagine you ‘are’ the card. What does it feel like to be this card?

Write a 1-2 paragraph ‘bio’ of the card, or even write a letter to the character in the card

What would it be like to meet this person/card?

What are the positive and negative qualities?

Relationships and Love:

What does the card mean if you are searching for love? In a relationship? Trying to fix a relationship?

What does the card tell you about other types of relationships in your life (e.g. friends, family, colleagues, etc.)

Spirituality:

What is the deeper spiritual message or lesson of the card?

What does this card tell you about your own spiritual journey?

Wellbeing and Health:

What does the card tell you about your general health and well-being? What might be some specific health issues associated with the card? (Remember, though, that if you are not a health professional, do not give specific health advice, unless qualified.)

Step 5: Review

Review your card profile. Know that you can continue to come back to it to refer to it and to build on it.

Over to You!

Select up to three cards from your deck and write up a Tarot Card Profile for each. You’ll be amazed at how much more deeply connected you feel with each card after such an exercise and your readings will benefit immensely.

Three cards not enough? Why not use the Ultimate Guide to Tarot Card Meanings Companion Workbook to help you work through each of the 78 Tarot cards?

When the Wheel of Fortune is reversed, luck is not on your side. There may be a turn of events this week that are not in your favour, sending you into a tail spin and changing your world significantly, seemingly for the worst.

Oftentimes, the reversed Wheel of Fortune indicates that there are negative forces at play that are outside of your control, leaving you feeling helpless and powerless. However, while there have been some unfortunate circumstances that are outside of your control, the run of bad luck that you are experiencing may also be as a result of poor decisions you have made in the past. Think about what actions you have taken recently and whether these may have contributed to your present circumstances. What can you do to improve your luck and regain control of your destiny? Despite the setbacks, learn from the cycle of life and be prepared for such ups and downs in the future. Accept responsibility for your current and future situation, and look for ways that you can create more positive outcomes.

The reversed Wheel of Fortune can also reflect resistance to change, particularly if change is being forced upon you. The appearance of this card suggests that change has become a source of significant stress for you and you may be trying to consciously or subconsciously stop events from running their course.

How do you anticipate the Wheel of Fortune reversed will play out for you this week?

As with all Tarot Circle posts, I’ll provide my initial thoughts and then I’ll hand it over to you, the reader, to use the comments section to write what you see.

Remember there’s no right or wrong and you don’t have to be an experienced Tarot reader to comment.

The Question

Alwin asks, “Will there be a reconciliation between myself and this other person?”

Alwin’s Tarot Reading

Alwin used the Celtic Cross Tarot spread and drew the following Tarot cards.

Present – Temperance

Crossing Card – Devil

Above – Four of Swords

Below – Ten of Wands

Recent Past – Ten of Pentacles

Near Future – Six of Wands

Advice – Six of Cups

External Influences – Page of Pentacles

Hopes and Fears – Empress

Outcome – Lovers

Alwin adds, “Well, what does it really mean? Number six seems to connote some form of pleasantry in relationships as it seems to signify union, while the Four of Swords, something negative. Why are there pentacles coming in readings with regards to relationship? Does this suggest money comes into the way as well?”

My Interpretation of Alwin’s Tarot Reading

Let’s start with the Past – Present – Future timeline. At a high level, this looks quite positive and there is a nice flow of energy here. In the past, the relationship has been very solid and well-established (Ten of Pentacles). What may have come in the way, however, was the energy of the Devil – being overly possessive, jealous or obsessive. Sometimes we can fall so madly in love that we lose sight of there being two individuals and we hungrily search for bondage and connection that is over the top. Perhaps things got out of hand and Alwin’s ex wanted some freedom.

Currently, however, Alwin is trying his best to be patient and to take a moderate and balanced approach (Temperance). He may be forever fighting, though, with the devil on his back, being tempted to force the connection again yet knowing that patience and moderation is required. This is like two side of the coin, two mindsets that are operating in combat with each other.

In the future, the Six of Wands beckons positive outcomes and a feeling of success and victory – no doubt a positive sign for the relationship. With the Lovers as the Outcome card, this too is a positive sign that Alwin may be able to reconcile with his loved one. However, the Lovers also indicates important choices, so he may need to make some firm commitments to changing his mindset or his behaviour and releasing the influence of the Devil which may cause him to become obsessive or jealous at times.

In his day-to-day life, the Four of Swords reflects that this relationship is lying dormant right now. Alwin is also using this time to rest, relax and re-energise. He is reflecting on the relationship before taking action. Underneath, on a subconscious level, he may still be carrying baggage from the past (Ten of Wands) and he needs to continue work in releasing this baggage.

The Six of Cups is about nostalgia and the good memories of the past. When he feels ready to take action, he may want to invite his ex to reminisce on the good times they had, to visit their favourite places and to remember what an amazing relationship they had. I see this, also, as a green light to try to reconcile in the near future.

With the Page of Pentacles, the person Alwin is interested in may be pursuing a new job, career or field of study. Her attention may be in this space, so Alwin needs to be respectful of her time and her other responsibilities.

With the Empress, Alwin clearly wants this person to be a key part of his life, and potentially even the mother of his children one day. He appreciates the nurturing and caring element of this person’s personality and wants her to be a part of his life moving forward.

Will There be a Reconciliation?

Let’s cycle back to the original question – Will there be a reconciliation? Well, I feel that the possibility is there and that Alwin is taking the right steps to get there. So long as he can manage the temptation to become overly possessive or obsessive about this relationship and he can create a more balanced and moderate mindset, he will give himself the best chance. He needs to show that he has made an important choice in his own mind to change his ways and to give only the best of himself to the relationship. To connect with her, he needs to take a walk down memory lane with her and remind her of all the wonderful aspects of the relationship that once was.

What’s Your Read?

Over to you! How would you interpret these cards and the spread overall? What is your advice to Alwin?

Post your response in the comments below. Use this as an opportunity to hone your Tarot reading skills or to get your opinion out there!

If you are interested in having your own Tarot reading interpreted, you are welcome to send it in, but please note there is currently a 5+ week waiting period.
