Sounds like a pretty nice

In reply to Vancouver: route planning:

Sounds like a pretty nice ride! You could do some of the Yellowhead highway (ride further North than I did)?

I crossed paths with a number of people heading west, and only a couple heading east as i closed in on the Rockiies/Banff—a few doing the Banff-Jasper-Radum loop.

I read a lot of blogs, and relied on Paul Wood's (2006) Cycling British Collumbia for most of my route (I followed Highway 7 north of the Fraser to Hope). Having vertical profiles is something I would highly recommend for anyone riding across BC—they helped with planning greatly. I hope to post a list of sites i looked at soon... (perhaps after I write-up daily logs from my trip).

Hi! I will be riding to Vancouver and back from Edmonton ... too bad we will miss each other, as I am thinking to leave here either Aug 27 or Sept 7th. I am having difficulty finding info to read from. What books are you accessing to define your ride route?
I am super looking forward to the adventure. I think it will be awesome!

In reply to a decent ride yesterday…:

In all, about eight hours in the saddle - time was affected by a strong headwind on the way in and rain on the way back. It was not too bad a time though. Rain was forecast so i didn't take the camera. Now that i am a gear h0r i will be taking the camera in my trunk bag... :)

For a few years, I observed

In reply to Day 4: The final stretches:

For a few years, I observed many people (waiting for buses) under the shade of the young maples and ginkgoes in the centre of Guelph. When the city built the Quebec Street shopping area, they chopped down a few of those trees. The lack of thanks - shown those trees - was awful. I arrived one morning, and the city had cut those trees, which had provided shelter for homeless people, and sparrows, to ground level. I reached under the construction site fence and grabbed a wedge of one. Homeless people had sat under that tree, in the summer. (I still have the wedge.) I took the bus, and did not cry about it. I felt like crying because the city showed no respect at all to the trees that had served the people so well. However, as soon as I got off the bus, some old friends pulled up in a car and offered me a ride, and as soon as I got in their car, I was not able to tell them where I wanted to go. It means a great deal to me that you appreciated the trees in Guelph. During the drought a few years ago, many of them died.

That's my favourite

In reply to An afternoon ride...:

That's my favourite route!!!! I used to take ridge rd to mountain rd to fly rd to victoria rd, turn left on 8th rd which turns into pelham rd and that'll take you past the vineyards into st catherines.. sooo gorgeous. Even after all this way (I'm in Courtenay on Vancouver Island) it's *still* my favourite route, which is surprising since it doesn't offer anything overly exciting as far as landscape variety.

If you take that route, to Victoria and 8th rd, it's beautiful and yah, I'd suggest taking the same road back 'cause the alternatives aren't as nice.. and you'll go past Ball's Falls park which is worth checking out.
