Is it just me or does it look as if like a few of the

I was also disappointed by the study, which is very vague in its goals and covres a huge area all the way to the corner of Lake Shore and Fort York Blvds. I didn't feel very engaged at the open-house yesterday, either, and not sure how getting a biased sample (those who bothered to show up to Metro Hall) sticking stickers on maps will guide the results. A lot of the focus seemed to be getting car traffic to the Gardiner faster. I can see the Dundas/Yonge scramble eliminated as a result of this study. After all, Denzil Minnan-Wong, who hasn't yet found a downtown street project not to interfere with, wants it gone. Chris:I find it interesting that vehicles with disabled parking permits are not only allowed to park for free, but they can also park in any no-parking zone, provided that there isn't a superseding stopping or standing restriction (or in front of a driveway or fire hydrant, of course). It's interesting because those permits are notoriously abused. Where I work there are some very expensive flashy cars with these permits parked by individuals who don't seem to have any trouble getting in our out of their Ferraris and BMWs and walking down the street.Steve: When I look at Dundas Yonge, it almost feels as if it is set up to fail. One problem with the Toronto scrambles is that they still allow pedestrians to cross with through traffic. This can work provided that the intersection has no turns permitted (ie there is no conflict between pedestrians and cars), but there is still the problem of stragglers in the intersection at the end of the phase. Conversely, if pedestrians could only cross on the all walk phase, then there might be problems with sidewalk capacity. This sort of thing is specific to each location. The fact that this is also a streetcar line with busy stops complicates things a lot because typically a streetcar eats two cycles: one to reach the stop, and another one to serve it.

I dearly recall my Glider coaster bike, I was about 8 or 9 when I got it for my birthday. It was metallic red and as you say you could really lay a patch of rubber with the brakes, in fact I wore a hole in my rear tire that way.

The best spam copy yet?

Spammed the comment (linked to a commercial venture), but thought this was funny:

"I’m impressed, I have to admit. Rarely do I encounter a blog that’s
equally educative and entertaining, and without a doubt, you have hit the
nail on the head. The problem is something not enough people are speaking intelligently
about. I’m very happy I found this in my hunt for something concerning this."

Works as a comment for any subject matter you can think of.

Though the trails are meant to simulate actual XC riding outdoors the feeling is much different than I anticipated. I got onto the trail and attempted to hop a log but snagged it and took a slight tumble but within a few minutes I was slowly adjusting and even took on the intermediate trail.

Thoroughly enjoyed your article! I turn 55 at the end of this month and have been seriously cycle commuting for 2 years. I do notice some “older” cyclist commuters out there and a number in our age group (please note that “older” does not apply to us) who, no doubt, gain the same benefit. I like the stats! I have you beat on some (will hit 4,000 kms this week from a 0 start in April. But your average speeds knock mine out of the ball park! I average (on a 28 kms round trip) 21-23 kms/hour depending on winds etc. What kills my averages though – I may come off the Martin Goodman trail with a 29 km average but a lot of it in my trek through the city up to Bay and College…and then the walking the bike down the hall to my office! I consequently start the trek home at an average of 19 - 20. Coldest commute – last Wednesday -7 (great ride!), earliest start to the season – last Wednesday (January 4, 2012). Go figure riding this early but will drag this out for as long as I can!

Jeez, you're right Pat - I completely omitted the Eastern Avenue Bike Lanes from my take!

I've never ridden the Eastern Avenue Bike Lanes - except from Loblaws to Rushbrooke - and that was frightening. Perhaps that experience resulted in my 'Freudian' omission? :)

Your point is well taken; I'll go for that ride and write a follow up.

Admittedly it's only a short walk from Eastern down to the Martin Goodman (at the southeast corner of Leslie and Lake Shore), but if we're serious about preventative health, sustainable transportation, and good quality of life - we need to find a way to connect these Lanes and Trails with something other than that dim of noise and speed and car exhaust at Lake Shore. I think a bridge at Knox Ave. is the cat's pajamas in this case - it will add the needed pedestrian/cyclist Gateway to the Water Front, and it will also be a beautiful symbol of a rejuvenating, hip, modern Leslieville.

Good summary of the issues. I live on Caroline. When people (incl. cyclists) say they don't understand why bike lanes are needed on Eastern, I enlighten them that some of us live between Queen and Eastern, between Leslie and Carlaw, and the only way to access those lovely bike paths along Lakeshore are along Eastern. While the Lakeshore bike path isn't the most scenic (indeed, I much prefer taking the Martin Goodman path when I'm out for a good time) it is a faster way to downtown (albeit, screwed up this year with all the construction on sewage lines). You seem to have omitted this dedicated (and separated) bike path completely from the above.
Also worth noting that the bike path along Eastern doesn't exist east of Leslie.

I had the same problem, with the gears not changing. Turns out the kids had been standing on the guard that protects the clickbox at the hub, twisting the guard and clickbox dow but 45 degrees. After straightening it up ie making the guard and clickbox level, it worked fine. Hope that helps.

PS I'm selling my Nihola if anyone is interested (we're moving overseas)

I have a blue and white T Eaton Deluxe Glider with coaster brakes. I was given it in 1977 by a lady who bought it in 1940. I used to ride it but not in years, the tires are more than a little past their prime. Love the ride of that bike.
Original balloon tires, all the logos are intact, just needs a little cleanup. It has the mount for the original basket but the basket is missing. So is the tire pump. Love to find those.
So now it is safely displayed in my office.

Good to hear fro you Stephen. Thanks for the encouragement.

I've been having problems with my internet connection - the local network isn't allowing me in for some reason - so I've been writing these at the local Jones Branch of the Toronto Public Library. New computer, none of my bookmarks available - but I managed to get some content up.

Today I moved my computer across my study close to the window so the Wi-Fi antenna was as close to the Jones Branch as possible, and wouldn't you know, I got a signal! Only 20 kbps, but stable - so good enough.

Tomorrow morning I hope to be up at 6:00 AM and run a Live Blog from start to finish. Hope to see you there! :)

I disagree with waiting to the far right and allowing right turning cars to pass. Very few streets in Toronto are wide enough to accommodate this move and it requires drivers to monitor your position, look for oncoming cars and crossing peds to their left while also checking the lane to their right to ensure it is still clear. When I arrive at a red and there isn't a car ahead of me in the right most lane, I stop in the middle. Cars trying to squeeze past cyclists waiting to the left are often stopped by crossing pedestrians once the light turns green anyway.

The route was perfect, no incidets until Church and Carlton, where a jogger was running on the road beside some construction barriers that were blocking the right lane - then out of no-where, several pedestrians walking against the traffic flow, on the street! I stopped got off the bike and walked to the end of the construction area.

Other than that, the trip was relaxing and efficient.

On the way down to Beline Caroline Azar's show at the Cameron House I had to go one way - wrong way around Dundas on Huron. Those streets should be signed two way cycle-traffic! Spadina Ave., with it's separated Street Car right of way forces north, south cycle traffic east or west of Spadina - those parrallel streets should be enabled for cycle traffic. They alternate one way and then the other way the next block to reduce automobile traffic volume and coincident noise. As they are - quite, local traffic only - these streets could be enabled as cycle-ways so we can avoid the urban architect hell that is Spadina Ave. between Bloor and Front

"..when you are riding and there is a car in front, do you try and squeeze beside?"

Interesting that you should ask that Major Major, A post written as part of this, then split up the next day answers that question precisely. :)

Can I ask, when you are riding and there is a car in front, do you try and squeeze beside?

When a car is stopped at a light or a Stop Sign, why is it that bicycles try and squeeze between the car and curb?

Shouldn't cars also be given the full lane, just like cyclists expect?

Great IDEA!

I would like to know the degree of difficulty of each route. I want to bring our children, 7 and 8 years old kids whom are not so experienced at long bike rides.

Thanks!

A great allegory! I get it. Complainers about 'banana prices' being fixed by 'banana companies' should just stop buying bananas. Then banana prices would go down. Maybe we would even look for an alternative edible - their are plenty of renewable edibles out there.

Yes, you are right Lori - the shuttle bus does do that.

That area between University and Bay seems to always have a few parkers, but it's usually courier trucks (Fedex, Purolater and Canada Post)... taxis are a close 2nd. :)

The second video gets the cyclists looking back and then darting for dear life across to their little 'pathway through the horror'.

I was thinking you could try shooting from the sidewalk at the end of the bridge - looking east. Might be a better POV to get a better take on the cyclist's experience there. Although this angle really get the terror of it all.

I still like your idea of a 5-way intersection at Broadview/Danforth that makes the on-ramp the fifth street. All traffic directions could then access the on ramp with the proper traffic light signal set up.

randi@maddeal.com working for an ad content aggregator called "Maddeal" ponited to a neat indoor cycling space in Markham, "Joyride150" (http://www.joyride150.com/). I was going to email this to him but I thought, 'That's dangerous, I'll get murdered with spam.' - so here:

Randi,

I cannot accept links to commercial ventures on my blog because it will lead to an avalanche of spam - even if I appreciate the content at the link you posted.

If you want to spread the word about the indoor bike park do it in a conversational way, in appropriate spaces - no links - use keywords.

Some free Social Network Advertising advice:

I see via your email address you're working for MadDeal and not Joyride150. I don't think that's going to work - you need to be passionate about the park and cycling, enough that you become a member of this community - and as such people will begin to trust the things you point to. Third party ad aggregation is a dead end going forward I think.

Have a good day.

Glad you liked it. Great idea, well executed.

I am thinking of a Live, 'Day in the Life' production - cyclists wear Telemetry Devices (http://bit.ly/e7TEIe) and a helmet cam.

Riders telemetry and cam stream would appear LIVE on a web page.

Any thoughts?

Comment on “War on the Car” about faces into a “War on the Bike” by michael holloway

misslynx,

Thanks for commenting. I've been gathering my thoughts for a couple of days before I responded.

I agree there is a problem. When I dove messenger at the turn of the century (sic :) I saw couriers using the sidewalk as if they were Masters of the Universe - one mistake someones hurt - and messenger becomes an instant schmuck. But, I question the writers motives. A call for more safe cycling infrastructure (like pointing to the proposed Richmond Bikeway, and calling for more of the same) AND targeting unsafe use of the sidewalk - by all users - could have been a progressive tangent to this story - but I believe there is a hidden agenda here; the Toronto Sun and the brain trust in the Mayor's Office and reactionary Tories are attempting to demonize cycling - playing off their victory-over-truth in the Darcy Allan Sheppard case - towards more car lanes, more car sales and more unsustainable economy - which will be the death of us all.

It cannot stand; I don't think I was overboard - I don't think that's possible here.

I have to say - I think you're being a little bit too harsh on her. While I certainly don't agree with her anti-cycling stance or her rather bizarre contention that we're somehow secretly in control of everything, the problem she's talking about is not nonexistent by any means.

The unfortunate fact is that while yes, there are more sensible and well-behaved cyclists than the anti-bike faction want to admit, there are also more irresponsible jackasses on bikes than most of us want to admit. As a cyclist who has also been known to actually walk places, I have, many times, run into exactly the sort of thing she describes - idiots on bikes (I don't want to dignify them with the term cyclists) blasting down the sidewalk at top speed, narrowly missing pedestrians and apparently not caring whether they give anyone a heart attack.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to be an avid cycling and advocate for better cycling infrastructure, etc., without feeling the need to defend everyone everywhere who rides a bike no matter how badly they behave while doing it.

While there may be a few situations in which we're forced onto the sidewalk due to suddenly running into construction or other road hazards, the vast majority of the time there is no good reason to do ride on the sidewalk, and most of the people who do it only do because they can't be bothered to actually learn how to ride in traffic safely. So honestly - I don't mind the idea of a crackdown on that, and don't see it as a "war on the bike" any more than expecting car drivers to behave responsibly is a "war on the car" like the conservatives seem to think.

The flip side of rights is responsibilities - if we want to fight for our rights (and I do), we also have the responsibility not to be - or defend - inconsiderate jackasses.

Dave - It's not a quibble when you are right. Thanks for putting the facts straight on that very important point - I have changed the blog entry. You're right, Alex Steida had quite a day: first North American to wear yellow AND all 5 Tour de France jerseys in one day! Wow.
