Get to know: Swimwear designer Skinny Bikini

By Christie Moeller, Bikini.com

Sex sells, at least when it comes to ultra-luxe swimwear and nothing is sexier than the alluring silhouettes of Skinny Bikini.

With their opulent itsy bitsy bottoms this sensual, sophisticated and elegant swimwear line aims to become the bespoke tailoring of swimwear.

"For years I had been in search of a perfect bikini that would not only enhance my figure, offer incredible comfort and support target areas, but also be an expression of my individuality, high-fashion taste, and sensual style.”

Focusing on a comfortable fit without sacrificing the sexy look Aida Takyrbasheva, founder and designer of Skinny Bikini, launched her sexy swim line.

“I want to push the traditional boundaries of the swimwear industry and sex it up a notch”!

Standouts from the line: Narrow, Brazilian cut bottoms with rouched backs and tie sides to adjust for the perfect fit.

What is the most important thing for women to look for in swimwear?
Aida: Besides the aesthetic beauty of a swimsuit, which is typically the first thing that our eyes see, the next main thing that women look for is the FIT. It doesn't matter how beautiful the actual garment is—if it's not flattering, the customer will not buy it. I believe it's important to perfect the fit of the customer you're selling to and allow them to feel as gorgeous on the outside as they feel on the inside when wearing your bikinis.

Three words to describe Skinny Bikini?
Aida: Glamorous, luxurious, timeless

If you could dress any celebrity in Skinny Bikini who would it be?
Aida: Rihanna, Jessica Biel, Beyonce, Jessica Alba

Web: www.skinnybikini.com
Video: www.skinnybikini.com

Cover Credit:

skinnybikini.com

Smell good: The best fragrances for summer

By Jimmy Im, Bikini.com

Want to feel sexy? Powerful? Flirty? Take on the season with a new favorite fragrance. From florals to sweet honeys to woody greens, these eight new releases have irresistible notes.

L'Occitane Eau Captivante
This popular French skincare company may be all about their hand cream but the brand new scent collection has been attracting both loyal fans and new customers alike. The Eau Captivante is a soothing unisex fragrance with green and woody aromas. Think a lush garden next to the Mediterranean Sea thanks to mint, lime and lavender. www.loccitane.com

Maison Martin Margiela (Untitled)
One of the greenest scents on our list, Diesel-owned fashion house Maison Martin Margiela (Untitled) is a favorite for the fashionably artsy, the chic beatnik and the lovable girl-next-door types. It's clean, yet fragrant, with notes of lentiscus, galbanum and boxwood, and a powdery, coco-y finish. www.maisonmartinmargiela.com

FLASH: Jimmy Choo
Need a scent to accompany your $800 heels this summer? Jimmy Choo unveiled a new fragrance that's all about power and sexiness. Flash has bold character with seductive notes that include pink pepper, white woods and heliotrope. Channel your inner diva and take charge with this unique fragrance. www.jimmychoo.com

Ralph Lauren Romance Summer Blossom
Ralph Lauren went ultra-sweet with his women's perfume for the summer. Romance Summer Blossom is light and breezy with scents of fresh tropical fruits like mandarin and guava. You'll also detect notes of jasmine petals, coconut water and vanilla. Wear it to a rooftop evening cocktail party. www.sephora.com

Pink Friday NICKI MINAJ Special Edition
Some celebrity fragrances make you want to gag rather than take a whiff. But we have to admit, Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday is a crowd pleaser. Launched this year, Pink Friday has notes of water lily, honeysuckle and jasmine petals. Live vicariously through a rock star with this fragrance. www.sephora.com

Jo Malone Limited Edition Plum Blossom Cologne
Nothing brings to mind an elegant, outdoor garden soiree like Jo Malone's Limited Edition Plum Blossom Cologne. The smell of yellow plum and succulent honey is sweet and sexy though the undertones of sandalwood and musk extract the "girly" and give notes of confidence and earthiness. The musk and sandalwood makes it suitable for your boyfriend to use as well. www.jomalone.com

Flora by Gucci
There's a burst of floral-based scents in Gucci's Flora, and it screams "summertime" in the South of France. You'll be enticed by the magnolia and violet but what gives it a summery, outdoor-in-the garden appeal is the undertones of green leaves and earthy woods. Buy here.

Vera Wang Lovestruck Floral Rush
Nothing captures a glitz and glam moment like Vera Wang's Floral Rush, a favorite of celebrities. It exudes romance and spontaneity—a tribute to the love of Romeo and Juliet. There are notes of mandarin, pink guava and, behind it all, woods and sheer musk. It's a modern scent that's intoxicating and lifting. Buy here.

Cover Credit:

Thinkstock

Beauty and the Beach

How to: Stay healthy seaside

By Erin O’Neil, Bikini.com

A trip to the beach seems like a pretty carefree excursion: warm, sunny weather, a golden tan, fresh sea air, plus a big blue ocean where you can cool off when things get hot. But there are dangers lurking where you least expect them. Good beachside habits are a must to stay healthy from head to toe. Here are some expert recommendations on how to with the perils that may lie in wait.

Skin

The sun isn’t entirely villainous toward human skin; moderate sun exposure helps the body produce Vitamin D, which research indicates may help protect the body from cancer. The Vitamin D Council says the nutrient can also help reduce the risk of hypertension, blood pressure, asthma and many more conditions.

Still, it’s no secret that prolonged exposure to the sun poses risks. Premature aging, skin cancer (including melanoma, the most serious form), eye damage and potential damage to the immune system are a few of the risks, according to girlshealth.gov.

To protect your skin, The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends hitting the beach when the sun isn’t as intense (before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.), wearing a wide-brimmed hat, (Vince Camuto hat) using a broad-spectrum, high-quality sunscreen that provides UVA/UVB protection, (Juice Beauty SPF 30 Sport moisturizer)—and applying that sunscreen liberally 30 minutes before you hit the great outdoors.

Hair

Protecting your hair’s health at the beach isn’t as critical as shielding your body from the sun and heat, but if you value your locks, it’s best to be prepared to prevent damage. Strategies to protect hair from the brutal effects of saltwater, sun and sand range from unorthodox methods like spritzing your hair with tap water before heading into the ocean, to more traditional options like hats and updos.

Oprah Magazine suggests using a product with a built-in SPF to protect locks, available from many major beauty brands in the form of convenient sprays (Fekkai Advanced Cooling Shine mist and long-lasting gels) and moisturizing hair oil (Kiehl’s Color-Protect Shine Infusing Hair Oil Treatment).

It’s also a good idea to stash a trial-size deep conditioner (Klorane Conditioner with Quinine and B vitamins) in your beach bag (O’Neill Beach Girl tote), which you can slather on after swimming to moisturize and smooth tresses.

Heat

The sun’s rays don’t just take a toll on your skin—excessive exposure to high temperatures can wreak havoc on your body as well. When your temperature reaches 104-degrees or higher, you’re at risk for heatstroke, which can cause cramps, rapid breathing, nausea, vertigo and weakness.

If you’ve been out in hot weather for a significant period of time and begin to feel tired, nauseous or cramped, drink cool beverages (Agrolabs Coconut Water Hydration shots) to keep hydrated, rest in a shady area (preferably with air conditioning) or take a cold shower.

Note: Make sure you hydrate with something other than tequila, since alcohol dehydrates the body.

Sea Creatures

Unfortunately, the creatures under the sea are actually not adorable members of a crustacean band. Some native ocean inhabitants can be quite unpleasant when disturbed.

Most local news outlets will warn beachgoers on reports of jellyfish or rays in the area, so make sure you stay up to date.

Stingrays are usually easy to spot, but jellyfish are another (more painful) matter. These gelatinous creatures can deliver quite a painful sting. Even creepier, many jellyfish are somewhat translucent, making them difficult to spot. When they appear in large groups, they’re easier to see, but pretty much ruin your chances of heading into the water.

While some people are allergic to jellyfish stings, for most a sting is just uncomfortable. Rinse the sting with saltwater and use topical creams to control symptoms. In the event of severe pain or an allergic reaction, seek medical attention.

Cover Credit:

iStock

Armed and Dangerous

How to: Tone up a difficult area

By Lacee K, Bikini.com

CrossFit, spin class, Pilates, hot yoga, paleo, Atkins, gluten free—with so many exercise and diet options, where does one begin? With the countdown to summer fast approaching, guys and gals are in a frenzy to get fit so they can reach into their closets and dust off that tank top, halter, summer dress and bikini without any fear.

And speaking of reaching … what has happened to your arms? The rest of you looks fab, but honey, those arms just say "flab." Have no fear, we scored some serious sit-down time with West Hollywood-based celebrity fitness guru Allison Barenbrug and asked for her advice on how to get A-grade appendages. Follow these quick, easy and affordable tips to get the arms you’ve always dreamed about.

Exercise

Nothing looks better than arms that are sleek, firm, shapely and feminine. Stay consistent and you will see change. Target shoulders with overhead shoulder presses and lateral and front arm raises. Target biceps with curls, and triceps with dips or pushdowns. Use resistance equipment, and choose the right weight to challenge muscles while maintaining the correct technique. Perform enough sets and repetitions to fatigue target muscles. And be sure to vary the angles to keep your look balanced.

Nutrition

Keep it "clean" and alkaline with whole grains, fresh vegetables, limited fruits, lean protein, healthy fats and proper hydration. Allison recommends drinking QURE alkaline water instead of other beverages. In order to see that great new shape in your arms, you'll need to strip away extra body fat.

Get outside

Working out in a different environment is a great way to change it up. Use Mother Nature as your gym and gear up for an intensive round of outdoor cardio. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen. The pay off is a golden glow to help show off your fabulous new arms.

Try a shake

As a variation on Allison's plan, I've been drinking Shakeology daily for breakfast. I absolutely love this rich and decadent superfood chock-full of good-for-you ingredients like sacha inchi, chia seed, flaxseed, spirulina, spinach and maca, just to name a few. Shakeology satisfies my sweet tooth since the flavors are delicious (chocolate is to die for!), and when you drink it for breakfast it helps curb late-night snacking.

In summary, keep your diet clean and challenge those muscles by using slightly heavier weights. Get out of your comfort zone. Hydrate, and don't forget to squeeze that cardio session in. By July 4, your arms will be well on their way to improvement.

Learn more about Allison at her website and find her on Facebook.

Cover Credit:

iStock

The long and short

Wear this: What style cover up is right for you?

By Christie Moeller, Bikini.com

You may think beach cover-ups are just for those with something to hide, but they are so much more than that.

Cover-ups bring an extra level of chic to your swim look. They can add bohemian ease or European sophistication in an instant, plus they limit sun exposure and are required at many resorts when traveling to and from the pool.

Ready to become an undercover expert? Check out the five basic cover-up styles.

1. Pareo

The most popular and frequently spotted swim cover-up is called a pareo — a long rectangle of body-wrapping fabric. It's super versatile and can be worn many different ways — short or long, printed or solid, sheer or opaque. Vitamin A Silk Pareo, $85. Roberto Cavalli Long Pareo, $485.

2. Tunic

Nothing says "resort" like a sophisticated tunic. Picture a light, oversized top that falls just below the thigh. Melissa Odabash Laura tunic, $189. Guess Knotty N Nice long-sleeve tunic, $65. Girl on Fire Tunic, $158.

3. Caftan

Effortless and ultra-bohemian, a caftan is an oversized free-flowing dress/top that can be short or long with wide sleeves. Feel Again Caftan, $158. Elif Crochet caftan, $98.

4. Poncho

The latest trend in swim cover-ups, ponchos are typically sheer and sleeveless. They drape effortlessly over the shoulders and have a light, airy feel. BGBGeneration Sheer Poncho scarf, $68. Etro Paisley Poncho, $665.

5. Dress

Dress cover-ups come in many forms. From maxi-dresses to short, flirty sheer and lacey, they easily make the transition from beach to brunch. Purple Tie Dye maxi cover-up, $64. Letarte Salt Water Taffy dress, $380. Mara Hoffman Luau spandex maxi dress, $231.

Cover Credit:

everythingbutwater.com

Dot” performed in Las Vegas for the first time since his debut show at Hard Rock Café in October 2012 and what a difference six months makes. With the enormous success of his major-label album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, Lamar went from rapping in a limited-capacity venue populated by college kids to packing a poolside show at the Strip’s hottest resort, where a diverse fan base rhymed word-for-word along with the Compton-born rapper.

Kicking off his set with “Hol Up” from his Section.80 mix-tape, Lamar wanted to show new fans his musical past. “Backseat Freestyle” and “The Recipe” proved to be crowd favorites as he slid playfully back and forth across the stage before performing the last 10 or so bars of each song A Capella. “B**** Don’t Kill My Vibe” had almost every single hand in the air (by my personal count) and “Poetic Justice” left the ladies in attendance swooning as the track’s sexy vibe coupled well with the breezy, Las Vegas summer night.

Lamar has skipped a few steps in his rise to fame, but his undeniable talent is the reason for the big jump. At this rate, he’ll be headlining a major tour before we know it.

Cover Credit:

Erik Kabik

All Made Up

Try it: The right makeup mix for a day at the beach

By Nedra Rhone, bikini.com

Historically, when it comes to makeup and the beach, many women just say no. But just like those skinny ciggies of decades past, we’ve come a long way, baby.

It is possible to wear makeup to the beach or pool and not look overdone. That doesn’t mean you should hit the water with a face full, but you don’t have to go all Bobbi Brown bare either.

A good rule is to stick with lighter, sheer shades that enhance your look, but there’s also room for a bright kick of color here and there.

The first step is to make sure to protect the skin with a hefty dose of sunscreen. Wait 20 minutes and follow that up with tinted moisturizer.

If you’re aching for the total coverage of a foundation, water it down with a bit of sunscreen and then apply. A mineral powder formulation is also a good beach option that can help you avoid looking greasy after hours in the sun.

While most women are going to the beach to get bronze, it doesn’t hurt to wear a little bronzer to the beach. This is one case where bronzer is always a winner. Use a matte bronzing powder in a shade similar to your natural tan. Dust it lightly on your eyelids, the top of your cheekbones, your forehead and chin.

You may think beach beauty is all about waterproofing, but while using smudge-proof products can help, be careful which ones you choose. Some waterproof makeup can appear very harsh, particularly in bright sunlight.

Waterproof mascara is always a safe option, as are newer waterproof products that mix staying power with subtlety. The new Aqualillies collection from Tarte was tested by members of the synchronized swim team of the same name, and the colors look great in and out of the water.

One of the Tarte products is a perfect bright coral for lips. For the beach, nothing beats a bright lip. Consider using longwearing stains and mattes instead of glosses, which are more likely to melt in the heat.

An alternate to a bright lip is a bright eye in tangerine or peacock blue. Just be sure to only apply the bright shade to lids. Again, consider using eye paints that last longer in the sun and water.

The focus may be on your face, but don’t forget the rest of you. There’s nothing like a brightly colored pedicure to top off a beach look. Toes are a great place to wear trendy colors like sea foam, bright yellow and electric blue. This added detail ensures a beautiful appearance from head to toe.

Cover Credit:

iStock/Mikalai Bachkou

Pretty Palette

Buy it: Trendy products for the cheeks, eyes and lips

By Lacee K, Bikini.com

Whether you glam it up with lush lashes and bold lips or go for a more neutral look, summertime is the time to shine. Makeup artist extraordinaire Mikal Sky shares her beauty tips for this season, on and off the beach.

Cheeks

What the beauty editors are saying: The shade of the season is peach. Opt for subtle peachy hues to highlight dewy, flawless skin. Mikal's take: "I agree: Peach is in—as is pale rose. I'm happy to say clean, organic, chemical-free makeup and skincare products are on the rise as we become more aware of how we nourish our bodies. 100% Pure is my favorite vegan, nontoxic line of cleansers, moisturizers and cosmetics. I know we are talking makeup, but I have to say the body butters are so rich and yummy; you'll want to ice a cake with them! For a fresh-faced glow, dab on some of the fruit-pigmented Pink Champagne Luminescent face powder.

Eyes

What the beauty editors are saying: If there ever was a season of lashes, this is it. A self-proclaimed lash addict, this is a no-brainer for me. The runways of Gaultier showed a Twiggy-like fringe variety, while Gucci curled and combed them. Shadow shades come in jade, turquoise and aqua with liner in silver and gold metallic. Swoosh eyeliner along the rim and smudge color underneath the eyes. And of course, go bold on the brows. Mikal's thoughts: "Yes to big and bold lashes! This creates a dramatic look that works both day or night. Apply a ton of lengthening mascara (like this one from 100% Pure) to frame your pretty peepers. For a simple day to night changeup, glide on a cream eyeliner like MAC's Blacktrack to create the perfect Dita Von Teese cat eye. I recommend a liner brush by Make Up For Ever.”

Lips

What the beauty editors are saying: Full lips! Bold, rich lips are all the trend now. Matte. Plump. Bright. What Mikal has to say: "I am loving the bold lips look. Choose a rich hue and generously coat your lips with YSL's Vernis à Lèvres Glossy Stain. This has the texture and shine of a gloss with the longwear of a stain and is formulated without parabens, sulfates and phthalates.”

For more beauty tips, bookmark laceek.com and mikalsky.com.

Check out LaceeK on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/pages/Lacee-K/480690068646438?ref=hl.

And Mikal on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mikal-Sky-Makeup-Artist/169614460717

Cover Credit:

Courtesy of Mikal Sky

Sun Worship

Protect yourself: The facts on sunscreens from a renowned dermatologist

By Lacee K, Bikini.com

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States with more than 3.5 million cases diagnosed annually.

Though melanoma may be less common than other types of skin cancers, it is much more dangerous if it's not detected early. Melanoma causes 75 percent of deaths related to skin cancer. Worldwide, doctors diagnose about 160,000 new cases of melanoma yearly. With these scary stats on the rise, more and more men and women are grabbing their sunblock.

Growing up a pale-skinned Angeleno, I dreamt of bronze skin. I tried time and time again to achieve it. Mystic tan, tinted body moisturizers, airbrushing — I have truly done it all. I threw in my tanning towel a few months back and decided to embrace my peaches-and-cream complexion. After all, maybe my lack of outdoor tanning contributed to my current lack of wrinkles.

I also finally began to listen to dermatologists everywhere and started to lather up. With an overwhelming selection of sun protectants at my fingertips, I am certainly not without options. But what really sets different products apart? What is the difference between the aisles and aisles of options?

I sat down with in-demand L.A. dermatologist Tanya Kormeili who helped shed light on the subject and taught me how to read between the (SPF) lines.

Physical Blockers versus Chemical Absorbers.

Physical blockers have zinc and titanium and reflect the light. They do not absorb energy, in contrast to chemical blockers. Examples of chemical blockers include sunscreens with the following ingredients: glyceryl PABA, dioxybenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, ecamsule (terephthalylidene dicamphor sulfonic acid; Mexoryl SX), avobenzone and others with big names. Recently, it has been suggested that these chemicals (especially used in the long term and in large amounts) can mimic certain female hormones once absorbed and potentially lead to certain cancers. Therefore, using physical blockers might be a safer alternative.

Know the Rules.

It is important to know the changing rules of sunscreens. The term "broad spectrum" is used to describe "good" sunscreens that both protect against UVA and UVB rays. The term "water resistant" is only used if the sunscreen was tested for 40 to 80 minutes in water. Terms like sweat proof, sunblock, suntan crème and waterproof are being eliminated from products."

Bottom-Line Tips from Dr. K.

1. Steer clear of the sun's strongest rays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

2. Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more.

3. Make sure to use sunscreen when swimming, sweating or laying out.

4. Use sunscreen despite the weather! On a cloudy day rays are still very strong.

5. Cover up with shades that protect from UV rays. Use hats and clothing to cover your skin and face from excess radiation.

See these few additional tips from the Skin Cancer foundation:

1. Avoid tanning and tanning booths

2. Do. Not. Burn. This is worth repeating: Do. Not. Burn.

3. Examine your skin from head to toe each month.

Learn more about Dr. K at drkormeilidermatology.com and on Facebook.

It’s how I dress. It’s how I coordinate my own wardrobe and jewelry. I love the building upon building of different colors and creating a palate,” she explains.

Inspired by her world travels, her love for her friends and family, and a desire to give back, Lowe has created Sheryl Lowe Designs — a line of beaded bracelets and pendant-adorned necklaces all designed to be layered — and a portion of its proceeds are donated to charities focused on women and children.

Constructed from rare and hard-to-find materials with an earthy appeal and spiritual influence, Lowe’s style advice for wearing her pieces is, of course, to layer, layer and layer! Purchase Sheryl Lowe Designs in-store at Neiman Marcus or online at sheryllowedesigns.com.

Cover Credit:

Sheryl Lowe Designs

A New You Right Now

Shape up: Tips from fitness expert Adam Steer

By Jimmy Im, Bikini.com

Because it’s always summer somewhere, there’s no better time than the present to get in shape to wear a sexy bikini. We sat down with fitness expert Adam Steer, co-owner of Body Weight Burn, and he shares his five simple tips on how to strip away fat while strategically toning and shaping the underlying muscle. Translation: look good in a bikini.

1. Limit starchy carbs to one meal per day preferably dinner.
Stick to whole-food carbs like sweet potatoes, white rice and sprouted grain bread. This lowers insulin levels throughout the day to keep burning fat.

2. Perform one 24-hour fast per week.
Stop eating after dinner, then start again 24 hours later. Drink as much water and non-caloric beverages as you like, including coffee and tea—but no milk or sugar. Fasting reduces total weekly calories and upregulates fat-burning hormones.

3. Work out late in the day, right before dinner if possible.
This increases insulin sensitivity before you eat that evening higher-carb meal, sending more nutrients into your lean tissues rather than storing them as fat.

4. Use high-intensity interval training to ignite your fat-burning metabolism for up to 36 hours after your workout. Twenty minutes of all-out intervals interspersed with periods of rest are all you need.

5. Focus your weight training where it matters most—strategic sculpting and toning.
Your glutes, shoulders and upper arms give your bikini body those seductive curves. Get the most bang for your buck with isolation exercises that put these muscles under tension for 4 to 6 sets of 45-60 seconds. Good options are sumo squats for a well-rounded butt, dumbbell lateral raises for sculpted shoulders and dumbbell kickbacks for tight, toned triceps. Do these resistance exercises 3 times per week.

Adam Steer is a bodyweight exercise specialist and fat loss expert. His company Shapeshifter Media creates innovative programs based on the latest research to completely transform people’s lives. Steer has worked with clients in dozens of countries around the world, both in person and online. Readers can download a free six-day training plan from his website, bodyweightburn.com.

Chow Down

Eat Well: Airport dining at its healthiest

By Jimmy Im, Bikini.com

Airports are notorious for failing to offer a vast assortment of healthy foods. And I should know best, considering I travel three to four times a month. Like a cartoon character dangling a carrot, airport restaurants know we'll crave and cave. Part of this can be attributed to our "vacation mode," where we neglect structured eating habits and make a beeline to Dunkin’ Donuts. Also, the stress of traveling gets the best of us. When our mood is low, we crave something that will make us feel better, like carbs and sugar. Thankfully, I've re-strategized over the past few years and have five rules to abide by to eat healthier on a layover. Take these tips to the terminal and you (and your belly!) will be grateful.

Cut Your Portions
If it's not a big bottle of water, cut it in half. Airport stalls are known to give heaping portions of food and beverages. Simply cutting portions in half reduces your calorie intake. It's a battle of small fries versus large fries, 42-oz. Cokes versus smaller sips. If you're absolutely craving junk food, you don't necessarily have to hold back — just moderate intake.

Eat Before You Arrive
Avoid the food stalls completely by eating healthy before you hit the road. In fact, pack your own lunch. I have gotten in the habit of eating a full meal before arriving at the airport, and if I have the craving to munch, I grab a bag of trail mix or nuts.

Fruit Is Your Savior
Get in the habit of buying fruit. Fruit is almost always sold at every restaurant and food stand, and it's your best low-fat bet. Obviously, it's also good for you and fills you up. If you're in a rush to make a flight, grab a banana or fruit cup — or go crazy with a cup of low-fat yogurt. You’ll feel better about yourself when your fellow passengers are gorging on Cinnabon.

Pick The Healthiest Option at Fast-Food Restaurants
If you simply can’t avoid fast-food chains and need a reason to chow on calorie-heavy foods, go for the healthiest option. Virtually all the restaurants have a healthy menu item. Get a bean burrito rather than a taco at Taco Bell, or a grilled chicken salad rather than a spicy chicken sandwich and fries at Wendy’s.

Eat To Hydrate
This may come as a surprise, but to feel full, stay low fat and be hydrated, go for a salad with tomatoes and cucumbers. Cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce are almost 90 percent water, so not only do you get full, but also you don't feel bloated by chugging gallons of water to stay hydrated on a flight. I always get a Greek salad when boarding a long-haul flight.

Cover Credit:

Thinkstock

Painted Lady

Trend watch: Nail blogs

By Laura Coronado, Bikini.com

Women are investing time and money in nail art and this trend is sweeping Pinterest boards and Instagram streams. The polish-buying public can’t seem to get enough of posting and/or peeking at pictures of manicures, either showing off or seeking inspiration for their own digit delights.

This nail fascination goes beyond the classic red polish and square shape. It’s all about glamour, originality and making a statement. Here’s a round up of five current nail trends and the blogs you should be reading to stay on top of it all.

Trend: Texture
Blog: EnamelGirl

With a sugar-like effect, the textured nail trend features a sparkling granule finish that can be left matte or topped off with a clear polish for a glossy appeal. Blogger EnamelGirl seems to be a big fan of Zoya’s Pixie Dust Collection, featuring colors from crimson to silver to periwinkle blue.

Trend: Gradient
Blog: The Nailasaurus

Call it gradient or call it ombré, this mani look takes two (or more) complementing colors and stylishly blends them together in a mystical and fantastic kind of way. The Nailasaurus generously shares how to master the look with a little patience, a cosmetic sponge and meticulous cleanup.

Trend: Glitter
Blog: A Polish Addict

Glitter nails have been around, but the trend has transformed to a less juvenile look, including confetti glitter and gradient. Nail blogger A Polish Addict has perfected the art of the glitter nail by keeping it classy and cool.

Trend: Taped Designs
Blog: Nailside

When painting a wall, you tape off the edges to create clean lines, right? So why not do the same with your nails? The Nailside walks nail art fans through the process of creating taped designs with easy-to-follow tutorials, like her laser-design tape mani.

Trend: Moon Mani
Blog: Nailing Hollywood

Who knew the human nail could be so much more than a bed and a tip? Don’t neglect the moon. When painted right, it can add a nice nonplus emphasis. Nailing Hollywood is actually a management agency that represents top nail experts, and the company’s Tumblr is filled with images of their clients’ work. Nail artist Madeline Poole recently posted this pretty pic of a moon manicure.

A Day in the life

Experience: 24 hours with Sarah Stage

By Christie Moeller, Bikini.com

You may think being a swimwear model is all glamour, fabulous beaches and mimosas, but nothing could be further from the truth. Swimwear models work hard for that perfect body, flowing hair and flawless "no makeup" look. Here's proof.

Ever wanted to spend the day with a swimwear model?

Well, the gorgeous Sarah Stage — who you may recognize from Jack in the Box and KIA commercials, Beach Bunny Fashion Shows or as Sacha Baron Cohen's red beret-wearing companion during his appearances as "The Dictator" — takes us along for a peek at her bikini-clad life.

Burbank, California

7 a.m.: Quack, quack, quack. My alarm goes off and it begins. I toss on my gym clothes, then make a healthy breakfast (oatmeal). While I eat I fantasize that it's a fully packed plate of pancakes smothered in sugary syrup topped with a chocolate croissant.

8 a.m.: Pilates class. Time to sweat and stretch.

9 a.m.: Back home, quick shower. Dry hair, apply tinted moisturizer, mascara, lip balm and body lotion — we keep it simple in SoCal. Get dressed; grab my model bag and a protein shake for the road.

10:15 a.m.: Stop off at my agency to take Polaroids and pick up comp cards. Taking Polaroids is a monthly, and sometimes weekly, stop. Clients want to know what you look like "right now" in unretouched Polaroid-style photos. This lets them know your current hair color, length, weight, etc.

11 a.m.: Casting for a lingerie campaign. I sign in and fill out a casting sheet/size chart with my measurements, give the waiting room a quick scan to size up my competition and wait to be called in. And wait. And wait. Then finally "Stage, Sarah Stage." Yay! That's me. The client has me enter a dressing room to try on three sets of the line's lingerie. Then the photographer takes some "test" shots of me for the client to review. Then I'm back in the car.

11:45 a.m.: On the 110 freeway going downtown for a fitting. Traffic, traffic, traffic. Honk, honk, honk. Can't find a radio station I like. Grrr.

Noon: Fitting. I try on all the possible looks for my upcoming shoot to make sure everything fits correctly — yes, this is like the eighth time I have undressed today.

12:30 p.m.: Ugh, back in the car on the road to a studio in Hollywood for a bikini shoot. More traffic.

1 p.m.: Arrive at location and start hair and makeup. My favorite part. I can relax, tweet, instagram, and text ahhh #socialmedia while the glam team makes me fabulous.

2 p.m.: Mmm, craft services. Snackity snack snack.

2:15-2:30 p.m.: Feel guilty about that snackity snack snack — then resolve that I have burned it off with all the running around today.

2:30 p.m.-10 p.m.: Shoot bikini campaign.

Midnight to 7 a.m.: Sleep, then repeat.

For more, visit Sarah's website and see video here.

Cover Credit:

sarahstage.com

Sand-cation

Where to go: Top 5 beaches in the southern hemisphere

By Abby Tegnelia, Bikini.com

While the Maldives and Central America have received worldwide acclaim for their beautiful beaches, the southern hemisphere offers some of the best sandy respites. From pristine turquoise water to untouched islands and tropical paradises, here are five beaches that will take your breath away.

1. Chile is becoming known worldwide for its wine country, but it also boasts gorgeous white sand beaches such as Bahia Inglesa. A quiet getaway, Bahia Inglesa is a favorite among locals looking for a real vacation away from it all. www.bahiainglesachile.com

2. Easter Island’s monolithic Moai statues are recognizable to history buffs, but beach junkies also fall in love with its gorgeous Anakena beach. Although most of the famous island features rocky coast, Anakena is a white sand paradise with shallow coves for exploring. www.easterislandtourism.com

3. Rio de Janeiro has staked its claim to some of the most famous beaches in the world, but Brazil’s lesser-known ones offer breathtaking beauty as well. Fernando de Noronha, a UNESCO World Heritage site off the country’s easternmost tip, is one of the most exotic, with a lush green coastline and 21 islands to snorkel around. www.fernando-de-nornha.org

4. Australians brag that Whitehaven Beach in Queensland has sand so white it could blind you. Stop there on your way to the Great Barrier Reef, or relax there before hitting up Down Under’s famous nightlife. Added bonus: the silica sand doesn’t heat up, so you can walk barefoot on its silky surface even during the hottest part of the day. www.tourismwhitsundays.com

5. For an untouched coral reef, visit the Los Roques peninsula in Venezuela. More than 300 islands and islets invite a diversity of activities, even though the area has yet to be discovered by throngs of tourists. Los Roques only recently started to build up a bit; expect charming posadas, traditional food and plenty of boat captains to take you out to their favorite private islands. www.losroques.org

5 Beachside apps

Our 5 favorites this week

By Jessica Vozel, Bikini.com

True, unplugging is an essential part of any beach getaway, but there are times when the right iPhone app can only add to the experience.

Just do yourself a favor and ignore those work e-mail notifications as you put these 5 beachy apps to good use:

1. An app for your destination (usually free)
Many beach hot spots design their own travel apps, which offer an e-guide of things to see, do, eat and enjoy. Many also offer additional features like full menus, hotel bookings, navigation to nearby beaches, guided walking tours and insider tips on saving cash and avoiding peak crowds. Apps put together by your destination’s visitor’s bureau are a great place to start.

2. SPF (free)
This app allows you to calculate — by plugging in your skin type and the SPF in your sunblock — exactly how long you can stay in the sun without crisping. The app also uses your GPS to find out where you are and determine that day’s UV index.

3. Monterey Bay Seafood Watch (free)
When you sample the ocean’s bounty on your trip, use this app to determine the most sustainable choices based on your location.

4. MultiTide (free)
For seashell gatherers, surfers and worriers who think their beach gear will be swept away while they’re distracted by beach volleyball, this app lets you know what time of day to expect the high and low tide. It also estimates the sunrise, sunset and moonrise so you can craftily stage a perfect romantic moment.

5. Reef Fish
Planning a snorkeling trip? For this app, marine-life experts and photographers compiled hundreds of pictures and field notes of gorgeous tropical fish in destinations like Hawaii, Florida and the Caribbean. Get to know the beauties you might encounter underwater.

Cover Credit:

Thinkstock

Pack for the Weekend

Pack it: Smart looks for a 72-hour jaunt

By Christie Moeller, Bikini.com

For the globetrotting fashion lover, summer travel is a sure bet. And whether it's a spontaneous weekend or a well-planned getaway, what you pack can make or break the trip.

With airlines charging by the piece and by the pound, deciding can be stressful. You don't want to have too much or too little — kind of like Goldilocks, you want it to be just right.

To ensure packing success, check the weather forecast for the area you will be traveling to. Don’t fall victim to the classic mistake of taking items that are inappropriate for the environment. Packing a parka for 90-degree weather would be an insta #fail.

Remember that on any good getaway you will be doing a variety of things so think multipurpose clothing. A maxi dress is a winner because it can be paired with sandals, sunglasses and a tote by day and jewels, heels and a clutch by night.

A well-planned weekend bag should look something like this:

Friday Evening: This is an anything-can-happen kind of night. Go with a cute “little black dress”, heels, jewels and a clutch. Warehouse Necklace halter dress, $80.

Saturday Morning-Afternoon: A maxi dress for brunch with swimwear underneath and sandals. This helps for an easy transition from brunch to pool. Alice + Olivia Kiernan Floral Strapless maxi dress, $484.

Saturday Evening: After a quick shower, freshen things up with dark denim, a wow-factor slinky top and heels. Give it a little oomph with a long necklace and a few bangles.

Sunday. Travel day. A loose skirt, drape pant or denim, an easy chic t-shirt and a summer scarf paired with some comfortable "feel good about them" TOMS.

The Essentials: Pack sunglasses, a cover-up and a beach tote — you never want to be forced to carry your gorgeous leather designer bag to the pool or beach (eek, water damage). Plus, a beach tote can fit everything you need — sunscreen, a tablet, a camera, water and, of course, your phone. And two words: travel steamer, travel steamer, travel steamer. The fastest way to take a look from revved up to rumpled is wrinkles. A great travel steamer fits easily in your bag and will keep you looking crisp and put together.

Seventy-two-hour jaunts can make for a fast-paced thrill ride if you are prepared, but bad packing can instantly put a halt to your fun. Stick with our tips and you'll be packed like a pro. Hurry up, Friday!

Cover Credit:

istock

From Miami to New York City, nightlife culture rolls over to weekend afternoons for boozing, cruising and dancing. We round up the hottest, sexiest and wildest hotel pool parties in the U.S., where celebrants are known to cool off in a scene that does nothing but heat up during the summer.

Shore Thing at Shore Club Hotel, Miami, Florida

It's all about the pool scene in South Beach, but no one really matches the party vibes at Shore Club on Sundays. The party kicks off at 1 p.m. and lasts until sunset, where young, sexy locals and tourists alike party to the tunes of Miami DJs Mateo DiFontaine and DJ Gunars, plus guests. Throwing back a shot while gyrating next to a hundred strangers in the infinity pool is not uncommon here. Website. Facebook. Twitter.

Pool at Ace Hotel, Palm Springs, California

This hipster hangout in the desert is the stomping ground of an eclectic crew: trust-fund babies, artists, celebrities, celebrity wannabes, models and urbanists. The hotel hosts weekly events and dance parties with live DJs, and the parties are known to go well past midnight, where the hot tub overflows with scantily clad boozers and a separate sky deck gets naughty under the desert sky. Website. Facebook. Twitter. Instagram.

Wet Republic at MGM Grand Hotel & Resort, Las Vegas, Nevada

Now that Hakkasan has officially opened at MGM Grand Hotel, making it the largest nightclub in Las Vegas, you can bet the hotel's Wet Republic pool parties will be even wilder and more notorious with DJs such as Steve Aoki and Calvin Harris. Wet Republic has always been a favorite of high rollers with five pools, several Jacuzzis and beautiful people galore. Website. Facebook. Twitter. Instagram.

Summer Splash at Gansevoort Meatpacking, New York City

The outdoor hotel pool scene in New York City is a burgeoning affair, thanks to see-and-be-scene staples like Thompson LES and Soho House. Gansevoort does it best — everyone from socialites to arty gays swarm the indoor/outdoor Plunge Rooftop on “Gansevoort Summer Splash” Sundays, dancing to house music with the sweeping city views in the background. Among the fist-pumping and boozing everyone manages to get a tan under the hot California sun. Website. Facebook. Twitter. Instagram.

Cover Credit:

MGM Grand Hotel & Resort

Gluten no more

7 simple ways to adopt a wheat-free lifestyle

By Marie Gentile, Bikini.com

If I hear one more person utter the words “gluten-free,” I’m going to eat them.

This no-wheat movement once practiced only by the gluten intolerant is gaining mainstream momentum. Gluten-free proponents tout health benefits ranging from reduced blood sugar to weight loss to improved sleep, though the jury is still out on the actual effects.

For my part, I decided to go gluten-free out of a combination of curiosity and peer pressure. A good friend of mine raved about the dramatic improvements to her overall health. I was curious about what effects cutting out wheat would have for me, so I decided to give it a go.

The diet took some serious adjustment, but it wasn’t as difficult as I had imagined. A little creativity and a bit of extra padding to my monthly grocery bill was all it took to get me over withdrawals. However, I found that whenever I mentioned the fact that I was going gluten-free to someone, their reaction was always something along the lines of, “Wow, I could never live without [insert wheat-based product here].”

I won’t attempt to proselytize for a gluten-free lifestyle, but I will say that many of those “can’t-live-without” products are easier to substitute than you might think.

Here are some smart, simple swaps that I made.

If you can’t live without: Bread
Try: Rice flour, flaxseed or almond flour bread

I’ll be honest with you—it won’t be the same. Some brands of gluten-free breads come close, but many of the ones I’ve tried are gummy, crumbly, bland or some combination of the three. While not exactly bread-basket material, these loaves serve well enough for a sandwich or breakfast side. In my experience, bread is typically just a vehicle for other things, so even if the slices themselves leave something to be desired, you can just pile them high with delicious eats and call it good.

If you can’t live without: Pasta
Try: Brown rice or quinoa pasta

Growing up in an Italian household where our three main food groups were spaghetti, lasagna and more spaghetti, this was a big one for me. There’s nothing worse than a bowl of mushy, gummy or slimy pasta, and based on my bread experiences (see above), I didn’t have high hopes for the gluten-free options. However, many of the wheat-alternative brands I tried left me pleasantly surprised. Personally, I prefer the more al dente texture of the brown rice brands, but the quinoa- or corn-based offerings are perfectly adequate. My biggest complaint is that the noodles tend to stick together and they don’t expand as much as wheat noodles, but overall I was pleased.

If you can’t live without: Crackers, pretzels and other snack foods
Try: Rice-/nut-based crackers or popcorn

As an avid cheese enthusiast, I understand the value of a good cracker. While most traditional offerings are wheat-based, many grocery stores carry gluten-free options as well. Nut-based crackers are typically a little crunchier and, of course, have a nuttier flavor compared to traditional crackers. You can also get them in a variety of flavors, from cheddar to cool ranch to curry. Popcorn is another easy gluten-free snack option, though it doesn’t support the weight of a slice of sharp cheddar nearly as well.

If you can’t live without: Pizza
Try: Tapioca flour, rice flour or cauliflower crust

Frozen brands and restaurant chains alike are offering up more wheatless pizza options. Many of these crusts are thin and crispy, a perfectly satisfactory vehicle for toppings and cheese. For a chewier texture, try Mellow Mushroom, whose gluten-free option has a consistency more akin to cornbread.

If you can’t live without: Cookies, cakes, brownies and other sweets
Try: Flourless chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, rice pudding or certain ice creams

Fortunately, there are plenty of options out there for you sweet tooths, many of which don’t even have to come from gluten-free brands (though you should always check the label). Several of these are also easy to make at home without having to buy a bunch of obscure gluten-free ingredients. A word of caution with ice cream, though: Make sure you watch out for mix-ins like cookie dough, candy bars and other treats that may contain wheat.

If you can’t live without: Cereal
Try: Rice or corn Chex, or gluten-free oatmeal

Skip the pricey gluten-free brands at Whole Foods and opt for the equally delicious, much more affordable Chex options at your regular grocery store. Chex’s rice and corn varieties are both gluten free and come in a number of flavors, from honey nut to chocolate to cinnamon apple. For those who prefer a hot breakfast, plenty of gluten-free oatmeal options have hit the market recently and generally have the same taste and consistency as regular oats.

If you can’t live without: Beer
Try: Gluten-free beer (yes, it exists)

Your typical brew usually contains ingredients like rye, spelt and barley, all of which contain gluten. However, several super-smart beer companies have come up with ways to use alternative grains and grasses to craft gluten-free ales, stouts and lagers without sacrificing on flavor. Gluten-free alternatives include ingredients such as sorghum, buckwheat, rice and millet. You can also find a number of gluten-free homebrew recipes online, though the ingredients may be tougher to find.

Cover Credit:

iStock

On Island Time

Plan a trip: Kona, Hawaii (the Big Island)

By Jimmy Im, Bikini.com

Hawaii is known as the Big Island for a reason: you can theoretically fit all the other islands onto this mother. Needless to say, there's plenty to do here, especially in Kona, one of its two major regions. Luxury resorts abound, great restaurants serve up fresh fish all day, and gorgeous beaches are at your beck and call. Outdoor enthusiasts wanting more than a cocktail by the pool travel to the Big Island for all its natural glory. The island's night sky is legendary (one of the largest observatories in the world is based here), a volcano still spills lava and hiking trails are seemingly everywhere. Unlike the other Hawaiian islands, the Big Island contains eight of the existing 13 different climate zones in the world. So whether you want to don hiking boots or flip-flops, here are the best of the best on this awe-inspiring destination.

STAY

Four Seasons Hualalai. It's all about service at this 243-room property that practically brims past full occupancy throughout the year. The staff knows your name, unexpected treats end up in your guest room and there's no shortage of amenities. The decadent spa has separate men and women's lounge facilities with an outdoor Jacuzzi and showers, not to mention a gym with a separate weight room and cardio room (and a separate Pilates studio and yoga room to boot!). There are seven swimming areas, including an adult pool, infinity pool and King's Pond, a natural pond "aquarium" with 75 species of fish and a spotted eagle ray to frolic with. www.fourseasons.com/hualalai/

Holualoa Inn. While it's slated as a bed-and-breakfast, this six-room, 30-acre intimate estate is more like a chic, luxury boutique. It's tucked away in Holualoa town and has some of the most breathtaking, sweeping views of the Hawaiian coast. The inn has rustic cedar wood flooring, wood-paneled walls, Southeast Asia-inspired furnishings and tons of lush foliage surrounding it. Breakfasts come equipped with fresh produce plucked off their gardens, and the sunset views are unforgettable. www.holualoainn.com

EAT

Coffee Shack. This unsuspecting restaurant is like a retro dollhouse perched on a cliffside in basically the middle of nowhere. Employees are young and hip and the vibe is old-school Hawaii at its best. The highlight, however, is the massive sandwiches, from chicken salad to fresh blackened ono, that come with that million-dollar view of the coast. www.coffeeshack.com

Lava Lava Beach Club. The newest buzzworthy restaurant on the island is Lava Lava Beach Club. The outdoor eatery in Waikoloa is right on the beach, so you can take a dip before diving into some of executive chef Ken Schloss' island dishes. There's free, live entertainment most weekends, and the cool crowd sets a lively atmosphere. www.lavalavabeachclub.com

DO

Kua Bay. Just a short drive from Four Seasons is Kua Bay. This sliver of a beach is screensaver material. Aqua-blue waters, pearl-white sand and a whole lotta surfers and easy-on-the-eyes boogie boarders make it a "must" on our list. Plan on spending the entire day here. We did. www.konakohalacoast.com/beaches/kua-bay/

Place of Refuge (or Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park). On the drive to the volcano, this 180-acre historical site feels more like a movie set. Swaying palms, beautiful lava-rock coves and centuries-old artifacts make it worth the visit alone. But its importance is steeped in its history. It was the stomping grounds of royalty, and ancient Hawaiian lawbreakers got a "Get Out of Jail Free" pass if they could somehow make it to this site, which was considered sacred. Take an audio tour for a fascinating adventure! www.nps.gov/puho/index.htm
