Gallery Exhibition Party

date: friday jul 31, 5:00 pm
location: LILOVEVE Gallery
457 Grand Street, Brooklyn NY
url: www.Liloveve.com
description: Join us for an collaborative Exhibition, presenting a series of photographs by Anne Arden McDonald and Jewelry designs by Caroline Glemann.
5:00-8:00pm
**Refreshments will be served**

Artist Statements:
Anne Arden McDonald: Diana Camera Work

"This series is about vagueness and images half remembered from the
subconscious. Each of these pieces is part of a series which, when seen
together, creates a sensation of falling or floating. These images also remind
me of a half-sleeping dream state, when we remember only parts of a dream
and the parts become symbols. We wake with a head full of half forgotten
images that we try to piece into a linear story line—with this series I am
trying to build mood without a specific narrative.
I am using a plastic Diana camera, shot on the “b” setting, to get this
hazy off-balance look. Because the camera has a plastic lens, everything is
fuzzy and vignetted, and looks like it is coming up from under water or out
of a dream."

Caroline Glemann: Jewelry Design

“I want my jewelry to reflect an intuitive design sensibility, and to create pieces that can be worn as an extension or expression of individuality. I am looking to balance two distinct sides of personal adornment; dress up that is socially inspired, for public display, and ornamentation that is a deeply personal signature of style, something worn simply for oneself.”

Rooftop Films presents The Way We Get By

date: tomorrow, 8:00 pm
location: The lawn at Automotive High School: 50 Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
url: http://www.rooftopfilms.com
description: Rooftop Films presents The Way We Get By, an award winning documentary by directors Aron Gaudet & Gita Pullapilly.

This screening includes live music and an after party with free drinks!

THE WAY WE GET BY (Aron Gaudet & Gita Pullapilly | Bangor, ME | www.thewaywegetbymovie.com | 84 min.)

The SXSW Special Jury Award winning "The Way We Get By" is a deeply moving film about life and how to live it. Beginning as a seemingly idiosyncratic story about troop greeters - a group of senior citizens who gather daily at a small airport to thank American soldiers departing and returning from Iraq, the film quickly turns into a moving, unsettling and compassionate story about aging, loneliness, war and mortality. When its three subjects aren't at the airport, they wrestle with their own problems: failing health, depression, mounting debt. Joan, a grandmother of eight, has a deep connection to the soldiers she meets. The sanguine Jerry keeps his spirits up even as his personal problems mount. And the veteran Bill, who clearly has trouble taking care of himself, finds himself contemplating his own death. Seeking out the telling detail rather than offering sweeping generalizations, the film carefully builds stories of heartbreak and redemption, reminding us how our culture casts our elders, and too often our soldiers, aside. More important, regardless of your politics, "The Way We Get By" celebrates three unsung heroes who share their love with strangers who need and deserve it.

The Way We Get By will hit theaters in New York and beyond in July. Check The Way We Get By official website for details

"A lovely, uncondescending look at three lives enriched by kindness."
Like the Spice is pleased to present Off the Clock, a group exhibition of works by artists who work or have worked as studio assistants to other artists, featuring works by Rachel Beach who has assisted Roxy Paine, Jason Bryant who assists Kehinde Wiley, Allison Edge who has assisted McDermott & McGough and Jeff Koons, Charlie Ledbetter who also has assisted Jeff Koons, Jenny Morgan and David Mramor who assist Marilyn Minter, Reuben Negron who assists Papa Colo, and Jeffrey Vreeland who assists Takashi Murakami. The seven artists in this show have each spent a considerable amount of time working in another artist’s studio. Here we present their personal artwork, giving viewers an introduction to the next generation of artists who may one day have assistants of their own as well as a chance to consider the studio assistant’s place in the art world more generally.
