In a microcosm of this ongoing phenomenon is the use of a site called Empire Avenue to facilitate the outreach efforts of a growing number of savvy social media managers, consultants, businesses big and small, non profit organizations, internet marketers and others.</p>

<p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; ">I first came upon the site from a man called the <a href="http://www.blogtalkradio.com/schoolofsocialmarketing" target="_blank">nicheprof aka Dr. Ron Capps</a>. At the time I took a superficial look-see and simply wrote off the site as one big game using stock market terms such as share price and dividends. I couldn&#39;t see any return on my investment of time into this site and thus its usefulness to me as internet marketer was zero.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 14px; ">&nbsp;</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; ">But something Dr Capps said on one of his subsequent podcasts motivated me to revisit the site about five months ago to give it an analysis and investigation worth its due.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 14px; ">&nbsp;</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; ">This site is an example of the concept David Meerman Scott stated in his <a href="http://www.webinknow.com/2012/10/going-off-script.html" target="_blank">article about going &quot;off-script</a>&quot; in attempting to fulfill marketing goals more successfully and cost-effectively. It&#39;s an avenue that&#39;s increasingly being explored&nbsp; by many as a viable way to get your message out.&nbsp;</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 14px; ">&nbsp;</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; ">Now an <a href="http://www.troymedia.com/2012/11/09/social-media-missions-drive-traffic-and-yields-real-business-results/" target="_blank">article in the mainstream</a> is garnering attention to the site regarding its efficacy in a social media marketing plan. Real-world results are being measured and gained. The site may have now gained critical mass in warranting it being included in</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 14px; ">&nbsp;</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; ">There are a number of internet marketers on there. However, one does have to be circumspect on how to promote. Direct messaging to others about opportunities is considered taboo. A more subtle approach is in order. Members generally understand that we are all there to promote something or another. How we do it is paramount.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 14px; ">&nbsp;</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; ">I&#39;ve gained some new friends and have a learned a lot more about social media in general. I&#39;ve come across some free resources for branding and learning that I&#39;d otherwise probably wouldn&#39;t have been exposed to that I appreciate. &nbsp;</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; min-height: 14px; ">&nbsp;</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; ">Empire Avenue is definitely worth a look. It probably is not every marketer&#39;s cup of tea due to the social nature of the site and can be a time-waster, just like any social site. Overall, though, I&#39;m glad I <a href="http://empireavenue.com/billdouglas" target="_blank">joined.</a></p>

<p>Based on one of the most fundamental constructs&nbsp; in&nbsp;<a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_programming" rel="wikipedia" target="_blank" title="Computer programming">computer programming</a>, &quot;If this, then do that&quot; it&#39;s a feature whose time has come. Its moniker is &quot;Put the internet to work&quot; and you can certainly do this. In fact you need to since the time spent doing these jobs is less time doing revenue-producing activities.&nbsp; With this the internet marketer can somehow hope to stay abreast of the never-ending changes occurring on the social media landscape. &nbsp;</p>
<p>There&#39;s a whole suite of social media sites, called channels on the site,&nbsp; from the familiar twitter,&nbsp;<a class="zem_slink" href="http://facebook.com" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Facebook">Facebook</a>&nbsp;and wordpress to the more obscure ffffound!,&nbsp;&nbsp;<a class="zem_slink" href="http://zootool.com" rel="homepage" target="_blank" title="Zootool">zootool</a>, and supply.</p>
<p>The point of the site is that you can combine these channels and perform simple actions called tasks that the system can take on your behalf to help automate the more mundane yet essential tasks of social media marketing. These tasks when combined with channels are called recipes. Users create them by the truckload and share them with others.</p>
<p class="p2">Some of the more productive recipes that I use include an automatic thank you tweet to anyone who mentions or retweets you on twitter and creating a tweet or Facebook post for every new blog post.</p>
<p class="p2">There may be a possibility of more complex&nbsp; &quot;nested if&#39;s&quot;, where one recipe is inside another, although I haven&#39;t tried it nor seen any yet.</p>
<p class="p2">So give it a look-see and discover for yourself something that just may save you some time and aggravation.</p>

If you read my <a href="http://billdouglasonline.com/?p=73 " target="_blank">earlier post</a> you&#39;ll know that in business relationship management engagement and empowerment are paramount in developing and nurturing your community or tribe.</p>
<p class="p2">Well,&nbsp; while reading the twitter feed of some of my new followers the other day I&#39;ve come across something that made me sit up. It&#39;s a great free resource that&nbsp; can empower yourself to be branded on twitter. My first impression was: This is what you get when you cross pinterest with twitter. It&#39;s called<a href="http://www.twylah.com" target="_blank"> twylah.com</a>.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="p2">Becoming a member of the site is easy. One, you can request an invite from the site or two, if you are in a hurry and you have a<a href="http://www.klout.com" target="_blank"> klout score</a> of at least 30, you can simply login using your twitter handle. (If you don&#39;t have klout then you should consider getting it free to help once again with branding.) &nbsp;</p>
<p class="p2">Once logged in initially the system analyzes your twitter feed for hashtags and topics you frequently tweet. When completed after&nbsp;a few minutes depending on the number of tweets, number of followers, etc you can select up to three keywords you&#39;re tracking on twitter that will always appear on the feed for your twylah page. Other minor ones will fill in the other areas of the page. There&#39;s even music that auto plays whenever you have a visitor come to your page on the site for an added touch to the user experience.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="p2">On the resources tab there are widgets and badges you can employ elsewhere. If you have your own domain you can follow some easy, straightforward instructions to host it there to generate even more traffic.</p>

<h3 style="color:blue;">1.NOBODY cares about your products (except you).</h3>
<p>Regardless of how easily/efficiently/cost-effectively/fill-in-the-blank your product is people will not give a rat&#39;s ass about it. That is, until you show you care by how reach out to them(see number four).</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3 style="color:blue;">2.NO coercion required and 3.LOSE control.</h3>
<p>These two steps are the hardest to do since they require doing an about-face in traditional methods of marketing such as soliciting a name and valid email. Forsake these practices and allow easy, uncomplicated access to your product or service. This unconventional approach will help with point number five.</p>

<h3 style="color:blue;">4.PUT DOWN roots.</h3>
<p>Be in places where your market, your community, your tribe, if you will, are. Look for them on blogs, in forums, on twitter or other social media. Speak to your audience in language they understand, not yours.</p>

<h3 style="color:blue;">5.CREATE triggers that encourage people to share.</h3>
<p>Tell your story to an interested market. By effectively doing number four you can discover out-of-the-box ways to make outrageous triggers.</p>

<h3 style="color:blue;">6.POINT the world to your (virtual) doorstep.</h3>
<p>Once your WWR gains critical mass you will be indexed in the search engines, especially now after the Google algorithm updates that give more weight to social media indicators.</p>

<p>You can trigger a World Wide Rave too-just create something valuable that people want to share, and make it easy for them to do so.</p>

<p>Personal branding is all about connecting, creating content and engaging. &nbsp;Creating a Facebook fanpage and a LinkedIn group will assist in developing a social media marketing plan that will facilitate those actions.</p>

<p>This is one of the most powerful features within the groups. Instead of having to spend thousands of dollars each year on email marketing you could simply create a group, and send your group members a weekly message for free. The downside is you can&rsquo;t brand your emails as you could with a custom email marketing provider (affiliate link).</p>
<h3 style="color:blue;">3. &nbsp;Create Sub Groups</h3>
<p>You can drill down by adding up to 10 subgroups to have more specific targeted access to your members and will make communication with interested parties a snap. You can organize by sub-niche or by location for example. One can pursue members for quality and relevance. Common interests, affiliation, experience and goals are readily available.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Which would you include in your marketing plan? As usual, it depends. The purpose of each is different as is the demographics. <p><font color="#232f39" face="Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif"><span style="line-height: 18px; ">Developing a community of like-minded individuals around your brand is a daunting challenge; not everyone gets it right; however, with a little ingenuity and perseverance they will come to know, like and trust you. And people do business with those they know, like and trust. Obtaining wealth is all about building relationships and building up your personal and business network. Through this process comes true success because once you establish relationships with people and you get them to believe in you, the sky is the limit.</span></font></p>
<p><font color="#232f39" face="Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif"><span style="line-height: 18px; ">There&#39;s a whole science called Business Relationship Management(BRM) that concerns itself with the building, maintaining and measuring the success of brand in respect to a community. While the purpose of this blog is not to delve into the complexities of BRM but simply to shed some light on some factors that affect all marketers, big and small alike, looking to brand themselves within a community. While I don&#39;t profess to be an expert in the field there are some pointers anyone wanting to connect with like-minded people should take note.</span></font></p>
<p><font color="#232f39" face="Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif"><span style="line-height: 18px; ">One of the first things to keep in mind is that it&#39;s not about the tools nor the platform that build a community. Though the ultimate goal is to sell a product or service, it is important to know that a community does not form around a service unless a business proves that its service can empower others. A business should therefore &nbsp;take time to engage and cultivate potential customers. Rather it&#39;s the engaging, the human interaction, connecting with people on a human and personal level. It&#39;s all about them, not your product or service.</span></font></p>
<p><font color="#232f39" face="Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif"><span style="line-height: 18px; ">Find where they are. Communities or tribes are nomadic on the web. Go where the people are. Determine what they want. Decide to join or make up group. Introduce yourself. Invite them. Ask them about their goals and hopes. &nbsp;Share yours. Begin the journey to deeper relationship building.</span></font></p>
<p><font color="#232f39" face="Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif"><span style="line-height: 18px; ">Realize that community is a gift; be humble. Be thankful for the interaction. If you resonate with people there&#39;s a palpable feeling that will endear your business to them. It&#39;s a mindset change. You are there as a participant, not the owner. Listen, really listen, ask questions, take polls, take notes and take action.</span></font></p>
<p><font color="#232f39" face="Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif"><span style="line-height: 18px; ">Equip them with what they need to succeed. Empower them. Give them great content. People naturally want to succeed and will look to you for more and more success. Then give it to them, instead of that product or service you have to sell. &nbsp;Celebrate them. Seek out personal and professional successes and praise those. &nbsp;This subtle approach will garner more favor for your brand in the long run. It&#39;s a fine line in blending social concerns with selling products and services.</span></font></p>
<p><font color="#232f39" face="Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif"><span style="line-height: 18px; ">Ensure you measure the ROI of the community; important metrics need to be defined, monitored and reported on a regular basis. A business needs to define what goals it wants to achieve on social media to maximize the return of time spent on managing its presence. For example these are things that affect the sales cycle: lead generation, support, polls, R&amp;D for future products.</span></font></p>
<p><font color="#232f39" face="Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif"><span style="line-height: 18px; ">Realize that core activities for interacting with your community cannot be outsourced. Customers are your most important asset outside of employees and should be treated as such. Prompt and courteous responses to feedback will go a long way to building your social capital. Outsourcing can take over doing perhaps doing the drudge work, such as the measurement and monitoring activities.&nbsp;</span></font></p>
