Email is neck and neck, but there's some interesting activities that dominate others. I personally would of thought online shopping would be higher, however with so many ecom sites not optimised for tablet experience - i'd see this as a growth area in the next 12 months.

-----
via Business Insider

According to our survey, tablets like the iPad are most useful for surfing the web, reading news, social networking, and playing games. It's about tied with traditional computers for email. What is a traditional computer better at? Banking, shopping, creating documents, and doing work related activities.

(Also, for what it's worth 73% of the people that responded to the survey said their tablet was an iPad.)

Indoor Rain Room Where Visitors Don't Get Wet

Very interesting and cool.

----

In the exhibit, a 100 square meter grate hangs overhead in the center of the room, from which a continuously falling rain shower streams. Visitors can experience the pitter patter sound of raindrops hitting the ground and the moisture in the air without actually getting wet. As they walk through the indoor rainfall, sensors detect their motions and the water is directed away from them in what the studio describes as a "carefully choreographed downpour that responds to your movements and presence."

Fat thumbs strike again - Mobile Ad 'clicks' on the rise

It's official - mobile ads are finally on the rise, but industry leaders are puzzled on how to make mobile ads work and the 'false positives' caused by the well known Fat Thumb usability issue.

As designers of mobile apps we take this seriously and our heart goes out to fellow stubby fingers users…

------

Via WSJ

Stubby fingers may be the reason many consumers end up checking out advertisements on smartphones and tablet computers.

Facebook Inc. (FB), Google Inc. (GOOG) and other technology companies have puzzled over how to make advertising work on mobile devices. But it turns out that tablet-computer and smartphone users, when reading news sites, are more likely to click on ads than those using computers, a new survey suggested.

Consumers don't appear to be turned off by mobile ads, according to a survey of nearly 10,000 people by Pew Research Center and the Economist Group. Half of tablet-computer and smartphone users notice ads when they are getting news on their mobile devices. Of that amount, roughly 15% click on ads. "People notice ads on mobile devices and may be even more likely to click on them than they are to click on other digital ads," the report said. A recent Ad Age study, in stark contrast, found that less than 1% of people click on digital ads regardless of the viewing platform.

But tech pros said the result may be less a measure of the quality of the ads than the size of users' thumbs. "False positives--namely clumsy digits--are the real culprits here," said Jonathan Rick, a digital-communications consultant based in Washington, D.C.

Full article

Mobile: M-commerce sites win customers with speed, simplicity

Online Media Daily puts a good article together with results from research conducted by Google. The study found nearly 96% of consumers have encountered sites not designed for mobile devices.

-----

Article Highlights:

Mobile sites that load within five seconds or less have a greater chance of converting visitors into buyers, compared with ones that take longer.

Consumers want big buttons and text, less content

Quick access to business information, such as directions, phone numbers, click-to-call features, ability to send email

Brands that do not have a mobile site feed competitors clients, with half admitting they will buy from the company less often if the Web site isn't mobile friendly

For the full article.

Graph: When People Use Mobile Devices

No surprise, ppl are passing up a Desktop computer at home for something smaller like a mobile device and using it 'after work'.

---

Via BI

Ad company Kontera tracked data from 15,000 publishers to find out when people are using their PC versus iPhones, Android phones, and tablets, which are lumped as "mobile" in the chart above.
This chart shows for each hour of the day what percentage of total mobile and PC content is consumed. As you can see, mobile usage is strongest from 6 PM to midnight. PC usage is strongest from 11 AM to 5 PM.
What this tells us is that people are using PCs at work, and mobile gadgets at home. Sort of a duh, right? Maybe, but it suggests a big shift in what "personal computing" really means. If we're doing mobile computing largely during our personal time, which is when we're out of work, it means people are more likely to buy tablets than traditional PCs in the future.

The RGB Colorspace Atlas by New York-based artist Tauba Auerbach is a massive tome containing digital offset prints of every variation of RGB color possible. For you designers, think of it as a three-dimensional version of a Photoshop color picker. At 8in. x 8in x 8in. the perfectly cube book was co-designed by Daniel E. Kelm and bound with assistance from Leah Hughes. What a beautiful sculptural object.
Some insights from Google on cross platform consumer behaviour.

No surprise mobile has changed a number of industries with Smartphone devices such as iPhone / Android Apps and mobile websites enabling the shift in consumer interaction. However it's not all mobile - consumers are using these devices sequentially with websites and tablets.

Quick summary

Majority of media consumption is screen-based - 90%

Consumers move between multiple devices to accomplish their goals - 90%

Television no longer commands our full attention - 77% of viewer watch TV with another device

Online shopping is a multi-screen activity - 67% use devices sequentially to shop online.

Via Google Mobile

The rate of iOS and Android device adoption has surpassed that of any consumer technology in history. Compared to recent technologies, smart device adoption is being adopted 10X faster than that of the 80s PC revolution, 2X faster than that of 90s Internet Boom and 3X faster than that of recent social network adoption. Five years into the smart device growth curve, expansion of this new technology is rapidly expanding beyond early adopter markets such as such as North America and Western Europe, creating a true worldwide addressable market. Overall, Flurry estimates that there were over 640 million iOS and Android devices in use during the month of July 2012.

Via http://www.ted.com
Ramesh Raskar presents femto-photography, a new type of imaging so fast it visualizes the world one trillion frames per second, so detailed it shows light itself in motion. This technology may someday be used to build cameras that can look "around" corners or see inside the body without X-rays.

Agreed, the app market is saturated with over 600,000+ apps - you need a strategy that first shows value in your product, then provides customers with additional content, features… powerups (Smurffberries anyone?). Customers are willing to pay, but not upfront.

Via Business Insider

------

According to a BII analysis of App Store data, 93 percent of the top 100 grossing iPhone apps use in-app commerce. Of those 100 grossing apps, two-thirds are free.

As most the top grossing apps are games, in-app commerce is most commonly used to sell in-game currency. However, companies like Pandora and eHarmony are using in-app purchasing to sell subscriptions, while Marvel is using it to sell access to comics.

Some interesting stats and usage habits from Litmus. Apparently you only get one shot at capturing a readers attention and the percentage of 'Read it later' type behaviour by users is low.

Hightlights

Mobile opens are growing rapidly. In the last year, emails opened on mobile devices more than doubled, and have increased 80% in the last six months alone.

Just 3.3% of users have viewed a single email in more than one environment (both mobile and either desktop or webmail)

Users who have recently read email on their mobile will do so again about 45% of the time

This means that nearly 97% of emails are viewed just once.

Mobile Friendly is no longer an option... rather a requirment.

With nearly 38% of all email opens occurring in mobile devices, the portability of email has never been so crucial.

Read the full article on the Litmus blog.
