I’m having a vacation for 10 days, so I will be back to the college on Friday, 9th of July. I have a lot of plans to be done in this vacation. Having A LOT of time with the family, and hanging around with my AnGel, I will be travelling to Cairo for sometime, distributed between work and having some fun :), I will also travel with friends to the beach for a 1 day trip which we used to have every year, this should be really a good vacation in-sha2-Allah.

You will wonder, a post about twitter applications, by “Arabian” developers and in English? Umm..Yes, most of the traffic i get on my web site comes from foreign places around the world, so I hope this will be a good introduction for such applications as a proof that we can do some great applications too

   About Application:

   • The application is using Twitter’s API for all twitter based actions, Bit.ly APIs for URL shortening, untiny.me APIs for URLs Extraction and sending images to twitter using twitpic.com APIs. What is really great is that you can translate tweets using Google Language APIs.
   • It can work on Linux, Mac and Windows.
   • Searching in the latest tweets and twitter search is also supported.
   • Conversation like replies.
   • Pinned to dock, or not a property which you can set in the application’s settings.

   My Review: I was amazed when I saw such application, it has almost all stuff you will need communicating with twitter but in a really amazingly fit Arabic interface. Just go to kzalek.com and give it a try, you will totally like it.

2. TwitSot

   Developed By: Khaled Attia @khal3d
   About Application:

   • The application allows you to create your own surveys/polls using Twitter’s API.
   • Once you sign in using your twitter username and password (UPDATE!) your twitter account and OAuth, you are able to create your own poll(s) and it will be published on twitter immediately so your friends (followers) are able to see it and pickup an answer.
   • People are also allowed to comment on each poll and publishing each comment including the poll’s URL on their streams too.

   My Review: Great addition to Arabic applications with the service provided with TwitSot. More features I think Khaled can be able to add to each poll like embedding polls in other web sites, but till now the service is really promising.

   About Application: As being mentioned on TweetToEmail’s website, in a three simple steps.
   • Create a Group: It’s easy! Simply create new group and select hash tag for group from the drop down box
   • Add Contacts: Add or import the emails of your contacts who you wish to send your Twitter updates to their emails.
   • Tweet To Email: Add Group’s hash tag to your tweet to send your tweet automatically into the email inbox of your contacts in the group.

   My Review: Kinda cool for bloggers who usually want to drive traffic to their website, it’s something like optin forms but the twitter way. I think it should allow users to accept being added to a specific group or not, as currently I dun think you can remove yourself from a group you have been added to.

   

So, those are three applications I found, try spreading the word around as those services/applications are really close in their greatness to other foreign applications that are used long time ago.

The video talks as I mentioned above about how twitter *will* be able to generate revenue in the upcoming period. I really love the idea, especially that “a promoted tweet, is just a..tweet.” But I didn’t stop here, because as I said in the beginning of my post that I *wondered* how did they do this before?

I asked a lot of people about that and I got some answers that I would like to share with you. I will really be happy if I saw some other ideas about how twitter got money before or might be able to do in the future, it will really be great.

1. Investors

   For ideas that seems to be really promising and amazingly popular like twitter, big companies, or even individuals, would pay a lot to invest in such idea. So, when the twitter come to be able to make money by its own, an investor will have a share in that. It’s something like a partial ownership, but in an indirect way, or just-with-fund way, so, most employees at twitter do the technical stuff and some of them do the managerial work, and by the end, investors do cut some of the profit they gain after they are able to get money by their own. After some research, I have found that, Google, YouTube and Facebook have been through this model, before they become like they are now. Ameer, my CTO who told me about this I think, and I found that this is totally right when thinking about a service/company that doesn’t charge money for their services.

2. Analytics and Statistics

   Another suggestion I had from Ameer, is this one; twitter can generate some statistics about a specific word that people are searching for in the public tweets, and this can be even from a specific geographic location, especially after they got to integrate geographic information with tweets recently. Then, they can be able to generate statistics about such word and provide these statistics for who might need it and charge some money for that. So, say company X is in need for some data about a product they want to launch in country Z, so they see how people interact about stuff related to that product through social media, they come to twitter and ask them to generate some reports about specific keywords – it’s kinda close to RESONANCE, mentioned in the above video -, for an amount Y of money, reasonable? – I really think facebook is applying this model -

3. API Calls

   Most of us use desktop applications for updating their twitter account, so you are needlessly for twitter’s web interface, but have you ever met “API limit reached” Message before? Whenever you use a desktop application, or if you are a twitter application developer, you should know that each time your application goes to twitter’s server to fetch some data, like the latest tweets from you people you follow, you hit the API once. Twitter provide your application an initial API hits number when your application start and with every hit, this number is decreased by one. When this number reaches zero, you see the message “API limit reached” or something like that. Mostly you don’t see this much, because the API Hits (Rate) number is updated every hour, and twitter applications developers mostly put this in mind, but imagine a developer who doesn’t want his application to have this message at all? or an account owner who always wants to see his public time line so he usually finishes his allowed number of hits – actually account owners don’t have to worry about API, I’m just suggesting this -? So, what I’m aiming for is that twitter can be able to get more money by selling more API hits/hour.

4. Pro Accounts or Pay for Service Model

   We have seen this a lot, you pay for what you get. This is really popular for services that include traffic on a website or online storage for example. What I love or all of us love about twitter that it’s free, and I think they will always make it free and this is really a great thing about twitter’s founders. But imagine that one day, twitter started to charge for our daily use? or for more tweets per day? or even for more 20 characters space? and it won’t be a loss then because they will make it really cheap, so you will think, Why not?!

5. myOwnTwitter.myCompany.com

   Ever heard of Yammer.com? Yammer is a service somehow like twitter, but it’s for internal company use. So, twitter can charge money, for being able to have a domain like twitter.mycompany.com so each employer can have an internal twitter for his company, with a cool integration link between it and each employee’s twitter account if he would love to.

6. SMSs

   You can now update your twitter account by sending SMS to specific number with your tweet and it will be inserted to your timeline. Twitter can get money from companies like Vodafone, or AT&T and other carriers whose users use twitter’s short codes to update their streams. So, SMS costs X amount of money, twitter gets a fraction of that from the carrier company because carrier’s users do use such service extensively which makes the carrier itself gain more money.Think of it in another way, and actually some carriers do this nowadays; in some countries – and this was enabled in Egypt before – twitter sends people’s – I follow – updates to mobile phones, the user just has to activate his mobile phone in his twitter settings. Twitter can insert direct ads in these SMSs and charge companies behind these ads for money too.
