We took to Instagram to ask our followers what the weirdest or funniest thing they’ve done while face masking and they did NOT disappoint. Trust us.

It’s a good thing they love us

“I put face masks on just to scare my boyfriend!” – @baileyadamsss

“I forgot I had a brightly colored mask on and scared my husband when he walked in the door from work!” – @rosatremaine

“I picked up my boyfriend from the train while masking once. Wish you could have seen his face when he almost kissed me hello. That face of confusion still makes me laugh to this day!” – @abbymorganstein

“I forgot I had Collagen Rehab mask on and snuggled up behind my boyfriend in bed. I got gooey mask all over his back haha. He was less than pleased when I woke him up trying to wipe it all off!” – @amanda.utz.77

You went where??

“I mean, certainly the weirdest thing I’ve done while masking is go through the drive through for some food!” – @tequilaistheanswer1

“I was using Kerafole and forgot it was on and went grocery shopping! The store employees were rather shocked, but we all got a good laugh out of it.” – @katefranklin_esthetician

“We were on vacation and went to breakfast with 15 people and we ALL wore our masks! We couldn’t control all the laughter that morning.” – @marianalelo

“I was wearing a face mask while cooking and realized I forgot an important ingredient. I ran to the store and couldn’t figure out why the employees were looking at me strange until I got back in the care and saw my reflection. So embarrassing!” – @missypurplegirl

“My boyfriend and I went on a skiing trip and stayed at a fancy hotel right by the mountains. We decided to treat ourselves and used some overnight masks. Unfortunately there was a false fire alarm that night and they evacuated everyone! We were outside in our pajamas, in the freezing cold, looking extra ridiculous with our face masks on!” – @fromjamille

“I had to answer the door one time while masking. It was shocking to the neighbor, for sure, but we had a good laugh!” – @kwkcrial

They can still see you…

“The funniest thing I’ve done while masking was receiving a FaceTime call from my little niece and nephew while masking…..they were scared to death!” – @jgibbs924

“One time I almost forgot I have a mask on right before a Skype job interview – it was a close call!” @hales_oneill

“I definitely forgot I have a face mask on and answered a FaceTime call from my crush.” – @brittanynapior

The kids are scarred for life

“My son and his friend thought they were smart – they put on Halloween masks to scare me and jumped up at the foot of my bed, but little did they know I had a face mask on! They screamed and ran. So funny!” – @poobie67

“I took the kids to school with my mask on… Needless to say, they were not happy!” – @heidisaldivar

“I scared the heck out of my toddler… there was no way to explain to calm her down! I had to wash it off.” – @momof_4_angels

Face masks and food do not mix

“Funniest thing I’ve done while masking is try to eat with a clay mask on!” – @skincare_goals

“I made the mistake of trying to eat leftover hibachi… noodles and masks do not mix!” – @mrspewpewboom

And last, but not least

Teen skin care can be confusing at best and downright maddening. Teens today already face mounting daily pressures of school, tests, sports and other responsibilities. Plus, there is a ton of false information circulating the internet that makes it difficult to tell fact from myth. Keep reading to learn the top skin care tips for teens and the perfect at home routine.

Estheticians’ tops tips for teens

We spoke to our expert esthetician panel to find out the best tips for teen skin care:

Consistency is key

“In your teens, a basic daily cleansing and moisturizing regimen is essential. Once this regimen is in place, incorporate one acne-fighting product at a time, being sure to follow instructions for proper use. Be consistent. Commit to it. Results build over time, not overnight.

Infrequent random applications of a product intended for daily use won’t get you very far. That being said, more product does not equal better or faster results. Too much of a good thing may irritate the skin and cause a setback.” – Laura Kania, Licensed Esthetician, Snips SpaSalon

“Cleansing your face on a daily basis is huge – cleansing only when you feel too oily won’t help you achieve the skin you want. Consistency is key.” –Tina Martinez, Licensed Esthetician, Flawless Beauty By Tina

Hands off

“Don’t pick. Don’t pop pimples. Extractions are not always advisable, and when they are, it’s a task best left to the professionals. Resist the temptation. Deep down, we all know that the only thing you accomplish when you disturb a healing blemish is to lengthen its healing time!

Also, be aware that even unintentional contact can transfer dirt, oil and bacteria. Do your best to avoid touching your face with unwashed hands. Keep your phone, headphones, and eyeglasses clean. Launder pillowcases, towels and hats frequently. Wash your face after you rinse out your hair conditioner.” – Laura Kania

“Keep your hands off your face! Picking at your acne is terrible for your skin and will only make it worse – plus it could lead to scaring. Try not to mindlessly touch your face during the day too.” –Tina Martinez

Don’t fear moisturizer

“Excess oil production is a factor in acne, but making sebum enemy number one is problematic. Healthy skin requires an oil-to-water balance. Teens who try to fight acne by stripping away skin oils can end up with sensitized, inflamed, and dehydrated skin.

Bioelements Beyond Hydration and Bioelements Absolute Moisture are great lightweight moisturizer options. Both can be Custom Blended by an esthetician to specifically target your skin concerns.” – Laura Kania

Self care

“Acne can be infuriating! Effective treatment requires effort and patience. Plus, we all want to feel good about what we see in the mirror. Teen acne can make you hate your own face some days.

Pro tip? Show yourself some love! Drink more water. Get more sleep. Eat healthfully. Get active. Stretch. Breathe. Use skin care products that feel and smell as good as they work. Take the time for a facial. Take care of you. Your skin will thank you for all of this!” – Laura Kania

Find the right routine

“Finding the right teenage skin care routine is key! Basic cleansing, toning and moisturization can do so much. If you aren’t doing that properly the skin barrier can’t function the way it needs too and you are going to be fighting a losing battle.

Once you can get in a routine that is appropriate for your skin type you can go further with things like masks, exfoliation, and spot treatments like Breakout Control (my favorite!).

I really feel like regular facials and proper home care have to be in place before any progress can be made. Start with these basics.” –Rita Holland, Licensed Esthetician, Marguerite’s Skin Care & Makeup

“Teens, like everyone, should cleanse, tone, and moisturize twice daily with the right products for their skin type – no more, no less. Exfoliating and masking 1-3 times per week and using a spot treatment for acne creates the perfect routine.” –Nina Holt, Esthetician, Westwood Studio and Spa

Chemical peels are one of the most misunderstood spa treatments – many of us immediately think of tabloid magazine photos we’ve seen of a celebrity with red, flaking, painful looking skin. But those images are the result of old, outdated chemical peel formulas that can result in some unpleasant side effects.

Today, omni-benefit, modern chemical peel formulas are a game changer. They can smooth texture, improve the appearance of wrinkles, brighten the skin, increase firmness, and much more – without the flaking, redness or peeling that would make you want to go into hiding!

“A client should receive a peel if he or she wants dramatic, instant glowing results. Peels can improve fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, clogged pores, firm the skin, and so much more.” –Nina Holt, Esthetician, Westwood Studio and Spa

Keep reading to learn exactly what happens during and what to expect after a chemical peel.

What to Expect After a Chemical Peel: Modern vs. traditional peels

Traditional chemical peel formulas often believe in the philosophy that “stronger is better” and only contain one type of acid in a monster-strength percentage. Unfortunately this results in chemical peels that are ablative, result in a sunburn-like appearance and leave people to hide for several unsightly, itchy, skin-shedding days.

However, Bioelements vision has always been to “coax the skin into shape, never assault it”. So our peels detoxify, draw out aging environmental impurities, and leave skin glowing instead of flaking. These elegant formulas include a combination of multiple exfoliating acids – glycolic and lactic acids, plus extracts of exfoliating fruit acids – with natural buffering willowherb and aloe to prevent redness and irritation.

“Chemical peels are an amazing way to transform your skin, but they often have a bad reputation! I always make sure that my clients are conscious of what the expectations are with any professional treatment, especially peels.” –Amber Murphy, Licensed esthetician, Advanced Skin Care Suite

It is absolutely crucial to do your research before booking an appointment for a chemical peel. Find a spa here that uses a gentle, yet complex formula.

What Happens During a Chemical Peel

If you’ve chosen a spa that uses modern, multi-acid and omni-benefit formulas, then this is what you can expect during your treatment:

Questions from your esthetician: Don’t be alarmed if your esthetician is asking questions continuously. In fact, that means they’re doing their job correctly! There are signs of peel irritation that aren’t always visible to the naked eye, so it’s important for your esthetician to inquire about them while they’re performing the treatment. Don’t hesitate to speak up about how your skin feels throughout the treatment. Your esthetician will know which sensations are normal and how to handle those that aren’t.

“I always encourage my clients to be comfortable with communication during peels. That is how I can better evaluate if they are experiencing any discomfort with their treatment and what their long term skin care goals are. Communication is key!” – Murphy

Tingling or itching: These two sensations are completely normal, especially for those receiving their first chemical peel. However, if you are experiencing anything beyond slight tingling or itching, let your esthetician know immediately.

“A little bit of stimulation is completely normal, just means that the product is working. However, if you’re starting to feel uncomfortable, speak up!” –Murphy

Temperature change: Some describe their skin as feeling cold after the peel has been applied, while others experience a warming sensation. Both temperature changes are normal as long as they aren’t painful or extreme.

“Clients will also be feeling a lot of coolness, which can surprise them, due to using cool water to remove and neutralize the peel and not hot towels that would overstimulate the skin.” –Holt

Tightness: The activated coconut charcoal in the Ultra-Detox Chemical Peel stimulates microcirculation and draws out impurities to detoxify the skin. While these are all great benefits, that ingredient can also cause the skin to feel taught. Again, as long as the sensation isn’t extreme, this is normal.

“The tightness sensation can actually feel refreshing!” –Holt

What to Expect After a Chemical Peel

“Aftercare is extremely important so your esthetician should recommend at home products to repair, strengthen, hydrate and maximize the results from the peel. And definitely SPF!” – Holt

Worried about chemical peel recovery time? Unlike traditional chemical peels, with Bioelements there is zero flaking, zero pain, and zero downtime after your treatment. Here’s what to expect after a chemical peel:

Immediate results: The advanced peel technology removes the uppermost layers of the skin at a microscopic level. This will immediately tighten the skin, unclog pores, improve lines and leave skin with a younger, velvety-smooth texture.

No irritated, flaking or bright red skin: There is no peeling after our chemical peels. Bioelements advanced, elegant formulas not only provide a completely controlled penetration throughout the epidermis, but also soothe and hydrate so there’s no irritation.

No downtime: Bioelements chemical peels coax the skin into shape rather than assault it. You won’t have to go into hiding after your treatment, unlike traditional peels.

Professional recommendations from your esthetician: After your peel, your esthetician should provide you with product recommendations and instructions. These products will maximize the results you achieved in the treatment room, so it’s necessary to follow their advice to get the most out of your peel.

Slightly increased sensitivity: While your skin shouldn’tfeel too sensitive, it will be slightly more sensitive to certain products, like exfoliating scrubs, after your treatment. You should avoid exfoliating at all for 48 hours after treatment to avoid irritation. If you have a series of peels scheduled over the course of a few months it’s okay to exfoliate between treatments, but be sure to use a chemical exfoliant (like Quick Refiner) instead of a physical one.

“After receiving a peel, you should be told not to go out in the sun without lots of SPF. You should also avoid prolonged amounts of time in the sun right after a peel because there’s an increased risk of burning, which could damage your skin.” – Kimberly Horton, Licensed esthetician, Wisteria Spa & Makeup

Make sure to be extra gentle to your skin after your peel. Drink plenty of water, moisturize your skin and avoid the gym for 24 hours after your treatment.

Do you suffer from sun spots, discoloration or dark acne scars? You’re not alone. Dark spots and discoloration, otherwise known as hyperpigmentation, are one of the most common skin concerns in the United States, especially if you have a darker skin tone. Keep reading to learn about hyperpigmentation removal now.

Hyperpigmentation: Types and causes

“When addressing hyperpigmentation, it’s really important to understand what it actually is and that it is a journey to properly target and correct it. Your skin gets its color from pigment-producing cells known as melanocytes. Melanocytes produce melanin which gives your skin its unique color. When the melanocytes are damaged, unhealthy, or pushed into overdrive they start to produce excessive melanin in certain areas, causing those areas to darken.” –Amber Murphy, Licensed esthetician, Advanced Skin Care Suite

From tans to acne, your skin keeps a visible record of the trauma it faces, which often shows up in the form of hyperpigmentation. While it might not show up for days or even years afterward, the hyperpigmentation you see now is the result of one of three triggers that causes the excess production of melanin:

1) Hyperpigmentation Trigger: UV Exposure

UV rays (whether via the sun or trips to the tanning bed) results in a tan – which is a response to injury in the skin. High exposure over time will produce unevenly distributed patches of melanin, often called “age spots.”

“When sunlight activates melanin production in exposed skin, the skin ‘tans’. A tan is simply a visible, uniform melanin increase. Melanin is the skin’s natural protective mechanism; a defense against ultraviolet radiation.

Unfortunately, the same sun exposure that darkens the skin simultaneously damages the skin, which ultimately leads to abnormal melanin production. UV radiation has a cumulative effect, and deposits of excess melanin amass over time. Many age spots that seem to appear out of nowhere have actually been decades in the making.” – Laura Kania, Licensed Esthetician, Snips SpaSalon

2) Hyperpigmentation Trigger: Hormonal Imbalance

Hormonal birth control, hormone replacement therapy, and pregnancy can cause a surge of hormones that cause uneven melanin production, leading to what’s called melasma – or “the mask of pregnancy.” Exposure to UV radiation can make it more pronounced.

“Pregnancy is the main culprit, but birth control pills have been known to cause it as well. Melasma can be identified by its presence on both sides of the face in a symmetrical pattern. That being said, always see your doctor about any major skin changes.” – Laura Kania

3) Hyperpigmentation Trigger: Injury

Often called Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (or PIH), waxing, acne, insect bites, and razor bumps can cause excess pigmentation at the site of irritation. UV exposure can make it appear even darker. PIH occurs in roughly 65% of African Americans (1).

“Inflammation can cause PIH. A common instance of PIH is the discolored spot that remains after a pimple, insect bite, or other skin injury has otherwise mended. Even after the inflammation that initially triggered the excess melanin production is long gone, the hyperpigmentation persists, fading very slowly.

Furthermore, some oral antibiotics prescribed for acne actually render the skin more susceptible to hyperpigmentation, due to an increased risk of excess UV exposure. So those with acne need to be especially careful of PIH” –Kania

Your hyperpigmentation removal plan

“What my clients use on their skin at home daily is so important if they want to target these pigment-producing cells to transform their skins discoloration.” – Amber Murphy

1) Exfoliate

Exfoliation is necessary for all skin types for a variety of skin concerns including hyperpigmentation. It is a key step in your hyperpigmentation treatment plan as it speeds up cell turnover to remove hyperpigmented cells faster. Exfoliation also removes the upper “crust” of skin so active lightening and brightening products can better penetrate the skin.

“Skin Editor is my absolute favorite exfoliator for hyperpigmentation. This imperfection-editing leave on AHA peel creme uses a blend of glycolic and lactic acid along with kombucha in-fused organic shea butter to rapidly brighten dark damage and instantly improve clarity and color.” –Teresa Stenzel, Bioelements Director of Education

2) Lighten and brighten

Your best and safest bet to curing hyperpigmentation is to use LightPlex GigaWatt Dark Spot Corrector and/or LightPlex MegaWatt Skin Brightener. Both use a breakthrough brightening blend that brightens only the pigmented areas without lightening the surrounding skin. Neither includes hydroquinone like other hyperpigmentation products, making them safer for the skin.

In a consumer perception study, 99% of women thought that LightPlex GigaWatt Dark Spot Corrector helped to correct uneven skin tone, sun damage, and discoloration, while 100% of women believed LightPlex MegaWatt Skin Brightener increased luminosity and brightened overall skin tone after 28 days (2).

“When dealing with hyperpigmentation, I always professionally recommend Bioelements LightPlex GigaWatt Dark Spot Corrector and Bioelements MegaWatt Skin Brightening creme. Both if these amazing products have Dimethylmethoxy Chromanyl Palmitate in it which is a synthetic peptide. It helps to inhibit tyrosinase activity (the enzyme that controls the amount of pigmentation) in overall lightening and brightening of their skin tone, clarity, and radiance.” –Murphy

Not only are they effective, they’re also lightening-fast! You can see results in as little as 2 weeks and the results just get better with use:

3) Protect & prevent

At the end of the day, even the best hyperpigmentation products will be useless if you don’t protect your skin from UV damage. Prevent hyperpigmentation and protect skin by always wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen, even if you don’t plan on going outside. Further protect skin by addressing the underlying issue, whether that’s acne, hormones or injury.

4) Head to the spa

Professional treatments are a great way to speed up the effects of your hyperpigmentation treatment products.

“Chemical peels, especially the modern, no downtime ones from Bioelements, really help speed up cell turnover, which reveals the fresh skin underneath the dark spots. It still takes time to fully remove hyperpigmentation, but you should leave with instant results. The Bioelements Depigmenting and Brightening Facial is also an amazing treatment for any discoloration – ask your esthetician about this treatment.” –Kania

Next in our Expert Estheticians series, we sat down with a licensed esthetician and skin care expert, Rita Holland of Marguerite’s Skin Care & Makeup , to answer some of the top skin questions. Holland is based in Bloomingdale, Illinois and is an official Bioelements Ambassador. She is a part of the large web of skin care experts that help Bioelements provide you with world class education. Read our interview with Rita Holland below!

What inspired you to become an esthetician?

Honestly, looking back on it, I think I always knew I wanted to be in the beauty industry. My great grandmother and aunt were both in the industry so maybe it ran in my blood! There was always something natural for me to take care of other people and find ways to make them feel good about themselves. Science has also always been interesting to me, plus I definitely need a creative outlet. So, esthetics just seemed to make the most sense and appealed to me the most. I love the fact that our industry can really provide an avenue for people to find some peace, relaxation and route for finding their inner beauty.

Can you tell us a little about your career path in the esthetics industry?

I completed esthetics school in my 30s and as soon as I graduated I wasted no time getting my license and getting to work. I took a job in a salon and worked as an esthetician there for 7 years. I enjoyed being in a salon. I met a lot of great people and gained some wonderful clients. As an esthetician in a salon I did facials, waxing, makeup and spray tanning. I spared no expense on my education, took tons of continuing education classes and soaked everything up like a sponge. As grateful as I was for the experience I had there and the people I met, I knew I wanted to do more with my esthetics career.

About 3 years ago, I made a decision to branch out on my own and rent a suite. While there have been some ups and downs to being on my own, it really has been the greatest decision I have made. I am still surrounded by a network of wonderful beauty professionals but I have so much more discretion in how I handle my clients and provide my services.

Throughout my 10 year career, I have always worked with Bioelements. When I was in the salon, we maintained partnership status and I knew when I began renting a suite that would be an important goal for me to meet. Bioelements has done so much for me as an esthetician. The support system I have with this company is like no other. Not to mention the fabulous results I am able to achieve for my clients.

I still do makeup applications, waxing, and spray tanning services in my suite, but I love that I can really center those services around skin care. Because it all starts there, right? If the skin is in good shape everything else falls in line. I also love that I can explore all the new treatments and products that Bioelements has to offer. My clients are always excited to see what I will learn next.

What’s your “stranded on a desert island” Bioelements skin care pick (besides SPF) – and why?

EEK!!! I only get one? It would have to be the Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum. It does everything – hydrates, exfoliates, brightens, smoothes fine lines and wrinkles, provides a dose of antioxidants. I mean if you were truly stranded with only one item, you could get by with just Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum for quite a while.

What’s the most common skin care mistake clients make?

I think the most common mistake I see clients making is not following a cohesive system. People tend to get drawn in by big promises and flashy packaging. They use every “miracle cream” that they can find when it isn’t really backed by science. It’s hard to tell the difference, which is why it’s crucial for clients to find a skin care expert they can trust to help them navigate.

Don’t even get me started with makeup too. All the primers and layers of goop that you can start caking on your skin – it’s just too much! Stick with a good cleanser, toner, moisturizer and broad spectrum sunscreen. Maybe heighten the results with an eye cream, weekly mask, serum or exfoliator….but slow down and really research each product. More doesn’t always equal better.

Clients should also try to use products from the same skin care company as they are designed to work together, especially when it comes to active ingredients.

What’s your favorite Bioelements treatment – and why?

Right now my favorite treatment is the Collagen Rehab and Radiance Rescue facials. I feel like clients see immediate results from these facials with just one treatment. They leave less lined, more hydrated, and glowing. Plus, the results last a really long time. The Youth Renewal massage is also super beneficial and relaxing. Clients are literally falling asleep every time.

These treatments have been great for wedding season where brides need an instant tune up. They’ve also been great for summer when I tend to put stronger treatments like peels on the back burner because a lot of my clients are outdoors and extremely active. It gives them great anti-aging results without putting them at risk for sun damage from deeper exfoliation.

What’s your favorite skin care ingredient – and why?

Hands down, my favorite skin care ingredient is the encapsulated retinol Bioelements uses in their products. This microencapsulated technology that is present in both the Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum and Sleepwear allows the retinol to work slowly over time.

It makes it so much less irritating, yet still extremely effective. Retinol and retin A products are extremely effective anti-aging tools, but they can cause peeling redness and sensitivity – not necessarily the look one is going for. Sleepwear and Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum can be used long term, delivering amazing results without down time. They don’t assault the skin – they actually improve it!

What’s the one piece of advice you wish every client followed?

Oh my goodness! Wear your Sunscreen. Every single day. Even if you are outside for just a few minutes – the sun ages you, quickly and at an early age. Plus, the risk of skin cancer is rising at alarming rates. Wear it. Your future self will thank me. I promise!

On the hunt for the perfect nighttime skin care routine? Our estheticians weigh in with their top five tips. Plus, keep reading to learn the correct nighttime skin care routine order.

Estheticians’ top 5 nighttime skin care routine tips:

“Don’t underestimate the power of a nightly skin care routine. In addition to the obvious skin benefits, making time to ‘wash the day away’ and treat your skin to quality products is simply good sleep hygiene. Performing the steps of your evening regimen can be a pleasant self-care ritual that prepares both skin and mind for rest and renewal.” – Laura Kania, Licensed Esthetician, Snips SpaSalon

1) Remove your makeup the right way

“It is crucial to remove your makeup and wash your face. Skin goes into repair and regeneration mode as we sleep. You need to support this natural process by clearing away the day’s makeup, sunscreen, environmental pollutants, perspiration, and excess oils.” – Laura Kania

Double cleansing is the ideal way to cleanse your skin if you wear makeup throughout the day. Popularized by Korean beauty bloggers, this simple process helps completely remove every last trace of dirt, grime, and impurities from your skin.

To double cleanse away every impurity before you hit the hay, simply use a formula designed to remove makeup (like Makeup Dissolver Perfected) all over your face, lip and eye area and then follow with your normal daily cleanser.

PRO TIP: “Some people with ultra-sensitive skin like to use Sensitive Skin Cleanser on their face instead of Makeup Dissolver Perfected – don’t use this on your eye area though!” –Teresa Stenzel, Bioelements Director of Education

2) Use the right products

“Once you have a clean slate, maximize your beauty sleep with products that replenish moisture and feed your skin. Sleep is the optimal time for your skin to absorb topical antioxidants and peptides. Plus, the lack of UV exposure also makes nighttime ideal for reaping the benefits of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and retinol.

“Most importantly use super reparative product like Sleepwear, Sleepwear for Eyes, Collagen Rehab and more. You can even leave Collagen Rehab on overnight for maximum repair. That way, you will wake up in the morning looking refreshed, hydrated & youthful!” –Nina Holt, Esthetician, Westwood Studio and Spa

3) Change your pillow case often

If you keep up to date with our SkinReading blog, you know the importance of cleaning your makeup brushes at least once a month. Your brush may seem clean to the naked eye, but it can contain bacteria, dirt, oils, old makeup, dead skin cells, and other debris that cause acne, breakouts, and irritation.

The same holds true for your pillowcases. They come in contact with your face every single evening and can contain even more debris than your makeup brushes. Wash them frequently to keep skin happy and healthy.

“This is actually one of our huge tips for people who are acne prone – it’s surprising how big of a difference this little tip can make!” –Teresa Stenzel

4) Actually get some sleep!

“Our skin uses the night to repair, so it is VERY important that you get enough sleep. You can use all the right products, but if you aren’t getting enough sleep it’s going to be tough to achieve the complexion you want.” –Nina Holt

The time your body spends sleeping is used for regenerating and repairing the day’s damage from free-radicals, pollution, sun damage, and more. The occasional late night won’t completely upset the process, but the effects on your skin can be immediate, and only get worse if you continue to skip sleep.

Learn what happens to your skin after a day, a week, and months of not getting enough sleep.

5) Run a humidifier

“Create a skin-friendly climate in your own bedroom with a humidifier. A more humid sleep environment not only reduces your skin’s nighttime transepidermal water loss (TEWL), but also decreases chapped lips, dry eyes, nasal/throat irritation and nosebleeds.” – Laura Kania

The correct nighttime skin care routine order

Confused about what order to apply your skin care in at night? Follow these easy steps, plus learn how much you actually need to apply:

Are your biggest skin concerns caused by something you’ve never heard of? They could be! Estheticians have long recognized the importance of healthy skin barriers – but many people outside of the industry have never even heard of them. You cannot have skin that is supple, healthy and protected if your barrier is damaged.

Plus, modern day life takes its toll on your natural barriers, which is why skin barrier repair has become a recent focus in the world of skin care. Keep reading to learn how to repair damaged barriers with the right skin barrier repair products for a youthful, calm complexion.

Do you have a damaged skin barrier?

Most people certainly do. If you have any of the following concerns, it’s very likely you have a damaged skin barrier:

Dehydration

Redness

Stinging skin

Itching

Flaky skin

Lines

Wrinkles

Breakouts

Excess oil

Blackheads

If you have one or more of the above concerns, you need to learn how to repair the damage and strengthen them, so you see results long term.

What is a skin barrier?

Skin barrier definition depends on which barrier you are talking about. The skin has several “barriers” – cellular walls, circulatory and lymphatic vessels, and the walls that separate each layer of the skin.

“Each of these is a ‘barrier’ that only allows certain substances to pass back and forth. But perhaps the most important is the hydrolipidic barrier, which resides on the surface of the skin (directly on top of the Stratum Corneum), and is comprised of dead skin cells, sebum and water.” –Teresa Stenzel, Bioelements Director of Education

Why do you need a strong barrier?

Strong skin barriers are necessary to protect the skin and its contents from damaging substances that would otherwise penetrate and absorb into the skin. They also to keep in nourishment, moisture, and in some cases are what allow bodily functions to take place and necessary substances to be transferred to wherever they need to go.

“As estheticians, we have long recognized that a depleted hydrolipidic barrier is a major common denominator for accelerated aging and unhealthy skin that looks older than its years.” –Stenzel

Without the protection that our hydrolipidic barrier provides, the skin is laid bare to every attack and will become increasingly weaker and the aging process will accelerate the longer the barrier is left out of balance. Plus, without a strong barrier to protect it, any skin care benefits are only temporary.

What damages the barrier?

“Skin damage occurs in a multitude of different ways, especially in today’s world” – Alina Houtz, Senior Esthetician, Jordan Thomas Salon & Spa

Specifically, your hydrolipidic barrier becomes damaged for many reasons, both internally and externally:

Internally: Certain skin conditions can easily lead to an impaired barrier. For example, those with rosacea have skin layers that contain less moisture and a circulatory system that has an impaired ability to transfer oxygen, nutrients and eliminate metabolic waste. This leads to dehydration, which then throws the hydrolipidic barrier out of whack as the skin becomes drier and flakier over time.

Someone with acne may have a skin that produces too much sebum, which affects the hydrolipidic barrier’s balance as well. Even natural, chronological aging can cause the barrier to become weaker.

Externally: Improper product and/or cosmetic use, over cleansing, over exfoliation, pollution, stress, unprotected UV exposure, poor diet, etc. can have a dramatic effect on the skin’s surface, which in turn obliterates the barrier.

“The harmful effects of UV rays and atmospheric pollution critically damage your barrier and are often the top two culprits, along with not taking care of your body and skin properly.” – Houtz

Surprisingly, many people with oily skin damage their barrier function the worst:

“While you may be tempted to strip your skin of all oil using harsh scrubs, oil blotting papers and more, you’re actually depleting skin of its natural hydrolipidic barrier too. This thin film helps keep skin supple, healthy, protected and balanced, so it’s crucial to coax your skin into shape, not assault it.” –Rhonda Robb, licensed esthetician and Bioelements educator

As the entire population gets older and lives longer, external environmental assaults such as pollution and even stress levels increase, which is why barrier repair is now more crucial than ever.

“A damaged barrier cannot do its job – to naturally protect the skin by keeping out the bad, and keeping in the good. Rather than covering up a skin concern learn how to strengthen the barrier to solve the problem at the core – so the positive results are long-term.” –Stenzel

How to repair damaged skin barriers

The first step to repairing your damaged barrier is to follow the right daily routine.

“It’s important to identify products that cause damage. Simply ask yourself a few questions during your home routine, like does this cleanser make my skin feel too tight? If so, you could be drying your skin out and causing sensitivity. How does your skin feel when you exfoliate? Is it red, tight and warm to the touch? If it is, you are most likely stripping your skin’s natural barriers.” – Houtz

Regardless of your skin type always cleanse, tone, and moisturize twice a day and apply a broad spectrum sunscreen every morning. Find the best daily products for your skin type here.

Exfoliation is crucial for all skin types as well, even sensitive.

“When done properly, exfoliation increases the rate of cell turnover, increases lymph flow, causes vasodilation, and stimulates nerve respond to trigger the skin’s self-reparative ability.” –Stenzel

If you have sensitive or unpredictable skin, gently exfoliate with Measured Micrograins+ to strengthen your barrier and soothe sensitized skin. For other skin types, find your perfect exfoliator match here.

Just be sure to use gentle pressure when applying your exfoliator, or any other product. Don’t overdo it with products and use them as directed to avoid barrier damage.

“If your skin is dehydrated, add products to your daily agenda that have humectants in them (ingredients that attract moisture molecules and hold them within the skin). Saturate your skin with you’re a hydrating toner, don’t skimp.” –Stenzel

“With so many different aggressors affecting our skin, it’s crucial to heal your skin’s natural barriers with the right products and with professional treatments. Find a trusted esthetician near you to work with to get your skin on track.” – Houtz

The best barrier repair masks

Besides following the right daily routine, using high quality barrier repair products can help undo most of the damage. Bioelements latest barrier repair masks, Collagen Rehab and Radiance Rescue, do just that.

Collagen Rehab uses skin replacement lipids and fillers to dramatically improve lipid barrier repair. This ingredient helps prevent epidermal water loss and daily damage to help strengthen skin’s barrier, while vitamin F helps keep membranes penetrable and younger. This formula also creates a discnerable moisture barrier for up to 72 hours.

“You will feel an immediate springiness and plumpness to your skin after applying it. Aloe is one reason why this formula is so protective to the skin’s moisture barrier, protecting skin from the outside AND inside, which is why the results last for days.” –Stenzel

Radiance Rescue, on the other hand, uses murumuru and shea butters to deliver fatty acid-rich moisture to keep skin soft and elastic while strengthening skin’s barrier.
Help – my skin looks dull! Unfortunately there are many different dull skin causes and it can be difficult to narrow down the culprit on your own. Don’t fret – keep reading to learn the top 10 surprising dull skin causes and the best dull skin remedies.

10 Dull skin causes

Ever wonder why your skin looks dull? Dull skin is skin that has a drab, sallow appearance, or a lack of healthy color. It can often feel rough, due to a buildup of dead skin cells, milia and poor circulation. There are many different factors that can cause dull skin:

1) UV damage

This is number one on the list for a reason: Nothing is more damaging for your skin than the sun. UV damage is one of the main reasons your skin looks dull. In fact, up to 90% of your age signs (like dullness, wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots and skin sagging) come from sun exposure.

At the end of the day, even the best dull skin treatment products will be useless if you don’t protect your skin from UV damage.

That’s why it’s so important to wear an advanced broad spectrum sunscreen daily, 365 days of the year. RayDefense SPF 30 and SPF 50 FaceScreen each protect skin from UVA and UVB rays. Plus, they decrease the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging caused by the sun when used as directed, and are dermatologist and clinically tested to be non-irritating, non-allergenic and non-sensitizing.

2) Dehydration

When skin is dehydrated, it’s lacking needed water. This can be caused by a poor diet or poor water intake, medications, smoking or UV exposure. If you have dehydrated skin, you may see premature aging lines, and a thin texture.

Any skin type can become dehydrated – even oily skin! So it’s essential to find the right dehydrated skin treatment that will infuse it with H2O in multiple ways – serums, toners, masks and more – to keep it younger-looking, comfortable and healthy. Learn more and find your perfect hydrator here.

3) Skipping exfoliation

Exfoliation is a VITAL step in treating dull skin. It is a necessity for all skin types, even sensitive, if you want healthy, happy skin.

Dull, lifeless skin needs to be “revved up” to boost microcirculation and cell turnover. Exfoliation and active mask treatments are an ideal way to transform dull skin back into bright, healthy and radiant skin.

Exfoliating 1-3 times a week (or even daily if it is a mild exfoliator) ensures dead cells are swept away, revealing a smoother, glowing complexion.

4) Sluggishness

Sometimes, your skin can hit a phase where it just seems “stuck,” and results are less visible. This is due to skin becoming resistive and stubborn over time.

“Resistive skin tends to show signs of dehydration, sluggishness, and congestion below skin’s surface. It is skin that you and your esthetician need to ‘wake-up’.” –Alina Houtz, Senior Esthetician, Jordan Thomas Salon & Spa

We reached out to Bioelements skin care professionals to learn how they deal with resistive, lackluster skin – read their sluggish skin solutions here.

5) Pollution

Our increasingly dirty world is full of skin-aging atmospheric stressors, so much so that researchers now predict that pollution protection will impact skin care as much as UV protection. Skin exposed to daily toxic pollution becomes prematurely aged, weakened, dull, dehydrated and sensitized.

Remineralist Daily Moisture is the perfect pollution solution. This lightweight, pollution-neutralizing lotion is the answer for modern day aging skin.

To protect yourself even more from free radicals, use antioxidant skin care, like Plump Start or Advanced VitaMineral C Complex, to scavenge skin aging free radicals and prevent inflammation.

6) Not seeing a professional

The right esthetician can be the difference between great skin and not-so-great skin. They are licensed professionals who have spent hours studying the skin. Think of them like your personal trainer for your skin. The pros know how to transform dull, sluggish skin with a spa facial.

“No matter the reason, I recommend a facial as your first step to tackling dull skin. A professional treatment can do so much INSTANTLY and can really help get you on the right path with product to address the issue.” –Marguerite Holland, Licensed Esthetician, Marguerite’s Skin Care & Makeup

A Bioelements facial reveals fresh, new skin with professional exfoliation. They also can rapidly revive dullness and boost tone. This is the best way to quickly counteract current, visible damage as well as any unseen skin damage that can be causing dull skin.

Find a spa near you.

7) Aging

In today’s modern age, between UV damage, pollution and more, skin is aging faster than ever. As your skin ages, dead skin cells build up quicker – leading to skin that is rougher with more pronounced lines.

Your circulatory system’s ability to transfer oxygen, nutrients and waste slows down causing skin to lose its vibrancy and appears drab, lifeless and rough.

Avoiding skin aging triggers, like UV damage and pollution, is the number one way of preventing prematurely aging skin. For many of us, however, it is too late for prevention. It is becoming increasingly common for skin to behave older than a person’s age, but there is good news.

You can minimize the damage and even help skin heal itself with these 4 steps.

8) Poor lifestyle choices

“Dull skin can occur as a result of many things, like lack of sleep, poor diet, improper skin care, etc. Lifestyle choices can make a huge impact on how your skin functions.” –Marguerite Holland, Licensed Esthetician, Marguerite’s Skin Care & Makeup

There are some obvious bad habits that cause skin problems FAST, like tanning and smoking, but there are some surprising ones too, like using makeup wipes to remove makeup. Learn what bad habits to ditch and which to keep for youthful, glowing skin.

9) Hyperpigmentation

Dull skin’s lack of healthy color can show up in the form of all-over discoloration and sallowness, or even isolated dark spots, called hyperpigmentation. There are three main causes of hyperpigmentation: UV exposure (the usual culprit!), hormonal imbalances, and injury.

Like all forms of dullness, regular exfoliation and sun protection are two of the main remedies. However, with hyperpigmentation in particular, it’s critical to pinpoint and obliterate the isolated dark spots with LightPlex GigaWatt Dark Spot Corrector and tackle all over discoloration with LightPlex MegaWatt Skin Brightener.

10) Using the wrong products for your skin type

Are you using the right cleanser, toner, moisturizer, etc for your skin type? Your skin should feel great after using all of your products – never tight and pinched after cleansing or overly greasy after moisturizing. If your skin doesn’t feel good, it’s a sign that you should switch up your routine.

Using the wrong products for your skin type will absolutely damage the skin over time.

This is another area that an esthetician should be able to help you in – a good esthetician will always professionally recommend an at-home skin care agenda to follow. You esthetician is like a detective – she will your skin and look for clues as to what it needs. She’ll ask you questions to gather even more crucial information, so she can choose the most effective treatment protocol and product choices.

Don’t live near a spa? Take our skin type quiz and choose your products accordingly!

Think you don’t have the time or patience for a complete, effective skin care routine? Think again – our skin “hacks” make it easy to get great skin. Plus, they actually make the rest of your daily routine easier, too. Read on for 7 easy skin hacks from the skin care pros:

#1: Create a double-duty exfoliating cleanser

No time to fit in your regular mask? Get a small dose of your favorite supercharged ingredients by mixing it in with your cleanser!

You can create an effective exfoliating cleanser at home just like professional estheticians use in their treatment rooms. This skin hack delivers deep skin cleansing plus smoothing and brightening exfoliation in one, and speeds up your skin care routine without sacrificing any benefits.

Simply combine your cleanser with an exfoliating scrub or mask (like Measured Micrograins or Kerafole) in your hands and apply using small circular motions. Rinse with warm water.

“My favorite way to do this skin hack is with Kerafole and Moisture Positive Cleanser – it creates a wonderfully stimulating, creamy cleanser.” – Teresa Stenzel, Bioelements Director of Education

#2: Mask your mouth

Your favorite face mask can also double as a lip treatment! Massage over your lips for a few seconds and then rinse off.

Collagen Rehab is our favorite mask to use on the lips because it is formulated with an ingenious fusion of collagen-supporting amino acids, softening mango and moisture builders that help rehabilitate aging, lined and exhausted skin – on both your lips and the rest of your face. This is the one Bioelements mask you don’t have to rinse off, simply apply and let it soak in.

You can also use Kerafole, Restorative Clay, or Measured Micrograins + to exfoliate any dead skin cells away and reveal smoother lips. Need extra hydration for dry lips? Apply Ultra-Rich CremeTherapy on your lips and let it sit for a minute or two. Then rinse off with warm water.

“Personally, my favorite skin care trick is to use Kerafole on the lips to exfoliate away dead skin and then follow it with Collagen Rehab as an intensive, overnight treatment. It leave my lips smooth, moisturized and plumped – I swear it lasts for days too!” – Alina Houtz, Licensed Esthetician, Jordan Thomas Salon & Spa

#3: “Depuff” under your eyes

Struggle with puffiness under your eyes? There’s no need to buy pricey marble rollers or other useless tools to reduce puffiness under your eyes. Instead, apply a couple swipes of Radiance Rescue under your eyes! This white truffle, caffeine and murumuru butter creme mask helps increase skin’s elasticity and moisturization as it reduces the look of lines and puffiness under the eyes.

Glowing skin hack: apply Radiance Rescue to your whole face, not just your under eyes, and leave it on for 10 minutes (or longer!) to emerge glowing, less lined and with an intensively enviable luminescence.

Bonus tip: place your eye cremes and gels in the refrigerator until you are ready to apply. The cool temperature will help reduce puffiness as potent ingredients deliver real results: less puffy, brighter, smoother skin under the eyes.

#4: Take a superior shower

Want the smoothest, softest skin neck-to-toes? Upgrade your shower with one of our fan-fave skin tools:

PRE-SHOWER SHED: Brush away dry, dull skin cells and renew texture with the Bioelements Dry Brush. This is the essential tool for smoother skin and energizes you and your skin in just minutes a day for a healthier-looking glow!

IN-SHOWER SWIPE: 100% natural cactus fibers in our cult-fave Cactus Cloth will polish your skin to perfection. Its unique cloth pattern ensures dead skin is sloughed off, revealing smoother, healthier skin from neck-to-toes.

“Cactus Cloth is my go to – especially for getting a close shave in the summer. I use it about three times a week in the shower to help alleviate ingrown hairs. It makes skin SO soft!” – Alina Houtz, Licensed Esthetician, Jordan Thomas Salon & Spa

#5: Hit ‘refresh’ on your skin

Want to instantly refresh skin? Perform the Kerafole Purge. Simply apply Bioelements tingly 10-minute face mask, Kerafole, for 7 days in a row for a total purge of impurities. This intensive treatment helps stimulate circulation in the skin to move toxins up and out to reveal skin that is fresh and clear.

“I did the 7 day purge and now use this product about 1-2x per week. It is like I hit the reset button on my skin and leaves my face feeling so soft! Amazing.” –Jennifer S., Bioelements.com 5 Star Review

Another way to refresh your skin is to apply a toner. Modern toner formulas (unlike the drying, alcohol-based version of the past) are an essential step to return your skin back to a comfortable pH and replace essential nutrients that tap water can strip away during cleansing. Always tone after cleansing, and take it with you to mist your skin throughout the day to replenish lost hydration, add a dewy glow and refresh your complexion.

#6: Soothe skin

“One of my absolute favorite skin tricks, especially during allergy season, is to keep my eye creams along with Calmitude Sensitive Skin Moisturizer in the fridge. The eye creams are so soothing when they’re cooled. Plus, this moisturizer formula is already designed to soothe skin fast, but keeping it cool in the fridge helps it instantly reduce puffiness and redness. This is one of the best summer skin hacks too – the coolness feels SO refreshing on your skin when it’s hot and muggy outside.” –Rita Holland, Licensed Esthetician, Marguerite’s Skin Care & Makeup.

Does your skin get irritated post-wax? Apply Stress Solution to your skin after waxing to soothe and prevent irritation and then follow up with the Calmitude Sensitive Skin Moisturizer from the fridge.

#7: Crease-proof your under eye concealer

If you’ve looked high and low for a concealer that doesn’t crease, the trick is to properly prep, hydrate and smooth the under eye skin first. Follow these 4 easy steps to get smooth skin and crease-free concealer here – this is one of the best beauty hacks for skin care!

What inspired you to become an esthetician?

I was fortunate enough to grow up in the beauty industry, so my passion for esthetics started when I was a little girl. My mother has been a cosmetologist and salon owner for over 30 years. I have very fond memories from spending time in the salon, but I always knew my love wasn’t for hair, but skincare.

Can you tell us a little about your career path in the esthetics industry?

It wasn’t until my junior year of college that I followed my heart and switched career paths. So, between my junior and senior year of college, I also attended esthetic school on top of my other education.

I attended National Beauty College, where I was introduced to Bioelements. To actually have the opportunity to use a professional skin care line while in school was an absolute blessing. I fell in love with the products, the results and the science behind Bioelements.

I graduated from esthetic school in 2004 and joined Westwood Studio and spa shortly after, where I currently remain on staff as the Master Esthetician. The evolution of my career has been fun to look back on. I’ve been fortunate to grow as an esthetician and most recently have been chosen as a 2018 Bioelements World Class Spa.

I absolutely love educating myself about how the skin functions, and how I can better everyone’s skin health using Bioelements.

What’s your “stranded on a desert island” Bioelements skin care pick (besides SPF) – and why?

If I was stranded on a desert Island and had only one Bioelements product to take, although difficult to choose just one, I would choose Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum, to help resist the signs of aging. That way, when I’m rescued my skin will look as time hasn’t passed!

Seriously, I love the instant results it does for my skin, and what it has done for my clients’ skin. It is my go-to all in one product. The way it minimizes my pores, firms & smoothes, diminishes fine lines. The clarity and healthy glow it gives my skin has made it a necessity for me. It has also been a fun product to study – there are so many innovative ingredients in the formula, like the time-released microencapsulated retinol and more.

What’s the most common skin care mistake clients make?

Over the years the most common skin care mistake I continue to see repeatedly, is a client abusing their skin – whether it’s use of the wrong product, a fad, or an unnecessary, harsh utensil, people are way too rough with their skin!

When the skin is abused, over time the protective barrier becomes weak and in most cases nonexistent. This leaves the skin unprotected and opens the skin to all kinds of issues, like dryness, redness, breakouts, burning, and irritation to name a few.

The first step in helping clients repair their skin is to get that protective barrier back strong and healthy. That way their skin can function properly, leading to healthy, glowing skin. This is attainable with the right Bioelements professional treatments and the correct prescribed Bioelements at home agenda.

What’s your favorite Bioelements treatment – and why?

My favorite Bioelements treatment is the Custom Blend Facial. It allows me to customize every step of the treatment depending on the client’s skin care needs for that day. There are so many avenues and options to achieve the results and goals I’m striving for.

There is never one Custom Blend Facial that I perform the same. It’s the only brand that allows me design it specifically for my clients skin, not for the mass. So, my clients know that the facial treatment they are receiving is designed specifically for them. And again, the results are just outstanding. Bioelements makes that easy.

What’s your favorite skin care ingredient – and why?

Again, the retinol with the time released microencapsulation technology that Bioelements has brought to the game has captivated me. It ensures the formula works over time instead of being delivered all at once. This helps reduce the irritation often associated with retinol, which allows many of my clients who have had previous negative experiences with retinol use it comfortably. Plus, it helps firm up the skin beautifully by helping the connective tissue weave together and become tighter, stronger, and denser.

What’s the one piece of advice you wish every client followed?

One piece of advice I wish every client followed would be to trust your esthetician. They know skin, the anatomy of the skin, how it functions and can evaluate your skin and recommend the correct treatments and products that are best for YOUR skin. When an esthetician works with skin day in and day out for years, that experience plus all their required education is truly second to none.

The skin tells us all about one’s health, so it is important for estheticians to know the anatomy of the skin and how it functions, not just push a product.

Seek out an educated and passionate skin care specialist to put together a regimen and routine for your skin. We are like your own personal trainer, but for your skin.
