Microevolution on macroevolutionary islands: accelerated evolution of colonize
rs on phylogenetically isolated host trees? (EVOLANDS)
 
A major paradox in biology is the speed of adaptation and diversification of t
raits, which is very slow on average in nature, but can be very fast in the la
boratory. Are there thus particular situations in nature when traits diversify
 rapidly? In fact, oceanic islands may trigger fast trait evolution due to: (i
) ecological radiations in the absence of antagonists or of optimal niches, pe
rmitting and forcing species to use suboptimal niches, (ii) founder effects an
d genetic drift. However, most extant species have likely evolved on mainlands
 and not on islands.
Plants, in particular mature trees, are distinct host patches for colonizers a
nd may be phylogenetically separated from their local neighbors since many mil
lion years of evolutionary history, representing “macroevolutionary islands”
. We hypothesize that macroevolutionary-island trees (MITs), or other long-liv
ed hosts, are a major and widespread trigger of fast microevolutionary trait d
iversification of their colonizers by similar mechanisms as on oceanic islands
.
To test this we will compare phytophages of different degrees of specializatio
n between MITs and non-MITs regarding resource tracking, individual and popula
tion-level niche breadth, phenotypic diversification (stoichiometry, metabolom
ics, rates of development and metabolism) and genetic diversification as indic
ators of microevolutionary radiation or drift. We will also study consequences
 for regional diversification of colonizer faunas on MIT species and non-MIT s
pecies. Community and behavioral ecologists will collaborate with ecophysiolog
ists and population geneticists within France and across Europe, benefiting fr
om large-scale, highly replicated experiments that foresters have set up for m
any decades.
The project challenges the mainstream in evolutionary biology of identifying c
enters of diversification by comparing spatially distant regions, by instead s
tudying diversification within local mosaics of hosts separated by large evolu
tionary distances. Identifying such types of hot spots of diversification is o
f pivotal importance for sustainable protection of biodiversity.

Subject 2:
 
Leaving its ancestral niche to respond to environmental change: a problem of r
ecruitment?
 
Humans currently modify niche conditions of species at an unprecedented speed,
 while species in general shohw a tendency to maintain their ancestral niche p
refernces (niche conservatism). We have recently shown that individuals that "
leave" their ancestral niche might be favoured due to a release from their ene
mies and hence a decrease in predation pressure. It remains hence unknown whic
h mechanisms maintain a species in its ancestral niche, and hence how man migh
t facilitate the phenomenon of "leaving the niche" and hence the response of s
pecies to global change. We here suggest that the ability of a species to leav
e its ancestral niche is controled primarly by its capacities of colonisation.
 We will test the role of recruitment in the evolutionary landscape of forests
, a land-use type that is strongly expanding in Bretagne region and represents
 hence a major challenge for biodiversity conservation.
 
Two complementary quesitons are being asked:
1. How can leaiving the ancestral niche be limited during the recruitment phas
e?
Hypotheses: dispersal limitation, reduced availability of mutualists for seedl
ings, low production of seeds within the new niche
2. How can leaving the ancestral niche be favoured during the recruitment phas
e?
Hypotheses: reduction of competition pressure on seedlings, reduction of preda
tion pressure on seeds and seedlings, strong natural selection during the recr
uitment.
 
The thesis will study the recruitment of trees (notably oaks) in different for
est communities The study will be conducted in collaboration with Office Natio
nal des Forêts. The first step will consist in choosing different study sites
 representing phylogenetically proximate or distant neighborhoods and hence ph
ylogenetically ancestral or novel niche conditions. We will then study each ke
y step of recruitment: (i) seed dispersal: direct observation of dispersal (no
tably zoochory) and indirect reconstruction using molecular markers; (ii) surv
ival of seeds: analysis of survival rates and of predation rates of seeds, par
allel to studies of populations of seed predators; (iii) germination: observat
ion of germination rates of seeds, parallel to studies of the interactions bet
ween seedlings and mutualists (mycorrhizae); (iv) survival of seedlings: obser
vation of survival rates, parallel to studies of seedling predators;  (v) seed
 production within the new niche. The final step will be to develop predictive
 models identifying the conditions facilitating individuals to leave their anc
estral niche and a phylogenetically proximate neighbourhood to respond to envi
ronmental change.
 
Methods: In situ observation of recruitment (seed traps, tracking seed germina
tion and seedling growth, demographic and genetic analysis of populations) // 
in situ experimentation excluding predators and mutualists // molecular analys
es of mycorrhiza // statistical analyses, null models of phylogenetic communit
y assembly // simulation models of recruitment success.

Subject 3:
Phylogenetic diversity of vegetation - impacts on assemblages of decomposer an
d on decomposition
 
 
 
Plant functional traits determine the functioning of ecosystems, and they are 
the result of evolution, with different traits in different phylogenetic linea
ges. Local plant communities can be assembled from many or few phylogenetic li
neages. We propose that the phylogenetic diversity of plants may determine the
 functioning of communities and ecosystems, particularly with respect to decom
position. The precise role depends on the competitive or facilitative interact
ions between plants. Moreover, phylogenetic diversity can be sensitive to anth
ropogenic impacts, such as nitrogen fertilization. Phylogenetic diversity may 
therefore be a common denominator to detect anthropogenic impacts and understa
nd their consequences. We will discuss two major and innovative aspects. For e
ach of these aspects, a wealth of data and materials are already available.
 
(Q.1) Ecosystem consequences of phylogenetic diversity of communities: Differe
nt plant lineages may have complementary nutritional qualities for decomposers
. Is phylogenetically diverse litter hence colonized by more diverse decompose
rs assemblages? Do these decomposers provide diverse functions and does this r
esult in a faster decomposition than phylogenetically aggregated litter? (Q.2)
 Anthropogenic determinants of phylogenetic diversity of communities: Nitrogen
 is a key resource in ecosystems and often in surplus due to fertilization, wh
ich can strengthen the competitive exclusion among species. Does nitrogen chan
ge the phylogenetic diversity of plant communities and their decomposers?
 
For (Q.1) we will explore how the phylogenetic position of plant species is co
rrelated with the phylogenetic position of their decomposers, using meta-analy
sis of published data. We will then study whether the litter of phylogenetical
ly diverse plant communities is colonized by diverse assemblages of decomposer
s, and whether the decomposition is faster in such communities. We will use la
rge databases and existing long-term experimental manipulations of grassland m
anagement to establish, for the first time, phylogenetic treatments on plant c
ommunities established under different constraints, and explore the consequenc
es on multiple  taxonomic groups of decomposers. For (Q.2) we will analyze dat
a for the Brittany region, combining estimates of the phylogenetic structure o
f vegetation and rate of litter decomposition. We will use geostatistical appr
oaches to test how a surplus of nitrogen in particular Breton soils is changin
g the phylogenetic structure of vegetation and decomposer fauna. This will hel
p to test theories on the role of resources and competition for phylogenetic s
tructure.
 
Methods: Meta-analysis on litter and its decomposers, their functional traits 
and their phylogenetic positions. Manupulating the phylogenetic structure of p
lant communities through selective exclusion of species (under different stres
s and disturbance). Geospatial analysis of the effect of nitrogen fertilizatio
n and land use on vegetation and decomposers.

    有人送了我这么个植物，据说是檀香木，店主说是活的，只需要喷水保持湿润就可以
了，我怎么觉得不太靠谱，不过确实有浓郁的檀香。求版上大神答疑。

左右脑分工问题是否已经明确确定？或者部分分工已经明确确定？（不考虑那种说现在确
定，以后说不定研究深入又发生改变的情况，只考虑当前认知的情况下）
左脑是否就是处理所谓的低级逻辑，以线性处理事情？
右脑是否是以跳跃思维思考等貌似高级的问题？
左耳听到的信息传递到右脑，右耳听到的信息传递到左脑？
眼睛，手，脚等是否也都一一种方式工作？
如果右耳失聪或者右眼失明，除了听力结果不好（听右边的不如左边清晰）或右边的视野
不够宽等不良后果，是否对人接受信息以及对信息的理解处理会有偏差？
人是不是真的有属于左脑型思维或者右脑型思维这种情况存在？

在网上看到一些言论，不过非学医学、生物类的，不知道这些言论的依据是简单的几个试
验然后就大胆假说，还是有一定依据的？
了解太少，不知可有有兴趣的同学多聊聊啊~
