Geotaggers who were familiar with GPSPhotoLinker will recognize the family resemblance, but will also appreciate the magnitude of changes this new app brings. It's no longer dependent upon use of a GPS track logger for a start, as integrated mapping now supports a manual geotagging mode (hence the dropping of 'GPS' from the name). There are improvements to workflow, a map viewer, a facility for track and waypoint management, and the pi&#232;ce de r&#233;sistance&#8212;EXIF metadata annotation. And yet it retains the incredible flexibility and the same precise control over automatic geotagging parameters that I appreciated in my review of GPSPhotoLonker. This post takes you on a visual walkthrough of the many new and refined features.

Disclosure: A single user license for PhotoLinker was provided by Early Innovations for the purposes of this evaluation (v2.0.1). I have a personal interest in the success of the Geotag Icon.

Offset

When you first click on the Geotagging Console button a HUD prompts you for the time zone your camera was using when the photographs to be geotagged were taken. As a general rule this is easier if your camera is always set to UTC (GMT) which is what your track logger will also be recording. The HUD helpfully prompts you to use a date and time-shifting tool if the images and tracks you load don't appear to match.

Adding tracks and photos

You can add GPX tracks, single or multiple, ...

Many telephoto shots appeared out-of-focus despite the well-regarded image stablilization (vibration reduction) built into the Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR DX attached to my new Nikon D90 body on it's debut outing. As was my habit, to protect my investment the lens was fitted with a screw-on skylight filter. I couldn't believe how poor my shots were when viewed on a 24" display: Was the camera (still in warranty) malfunctioning? Had my photographic skills regressed? Could something be wrong with the (now out-of-waranty) lens? Why was the centre of some images sharp, with progressive blurring or even 'double vision' towards the peripheries? These were questions for Nikon to answer.

The image below illustrates the problem nicely (showing why I discarded 4 in 5 images I shot). It was taken in bright sunlight while standing still, handheld with VR active, on Auto program mode at f7.1 with a shutter speed of 1/200th of a second. AF lock was confirmed in Nikon View and corresponds to the central circle overlaid on the image:

The bannisters in the central circle are in sharp focus; the bannisters in the peripheral circles are blurred, perhaps even double, with the amount of blurring seemingly worsening as you move towards the image edge. Each circle is the same focal distance from the sensor.

I was at a loss to understand the optics behind such a result, and my local camera store recommended I speak ...

I have an iPhone 2G which I previously unlocked and used on Vodafone UK, but found myself drawn to O2's offer of unlimited O2 to O2 calls&#8212;not to mention avoidance of the need to unlock the device and the hassle around firmware updates that doing so entails. I had to dig around the Interwebs and make a support phone call to discover all I needed to know to get up and running with O2 Simplicity; that knowledge is summarized below. Feel free to contribute any further tidbits!

Know the limitations of your phone

As a glance at this chart from Apple will show, tethering and MMS are not supported on 2G iPhones:

&#169; Apple

Despite the implications of this chart, you can receive picture messages on 2G iPhones, in a roundabout way (see below). Incidentally, MMS will apparently work fine on iPhone 3G but tethering requires purchase of a bolt-on plan from O2, although can be enabled without easily enough&#8212;but doing so risks disconnection.

Know the limitations of your tariff

A Simplicity tariff isn't the same as an iPhone tariff; O2 couldn't really make the former too attractive or they'd cannibalise sales of iPhones on contract. For the clear benefit of a month-by-month contract at a lesser price, you have to give something up. Not a lot, to be ...

Exploitation has downsides too and these seem to be manifest when you look at the growing epidemic of iPhone apps pertaining to swine (novel, Mexican, or H1N1) influenza that you can pay to download from Apple's iTunes for use on your iPhone. As of today I count nineteen paid apps (in the UK store) and thirteen provided free-of-charge (although these may include paid advertisements). Do we need so much choice? Do we need flu updates on mobile devices at all? What are the risks associated with this expeditious development?

'Greedy pigs' priced from 0.59p to &#163;2.99.

Some of the apps, such as Swine Flu Tracker Map (free), appear to be fairly well implemented, often merely aggregating content from online information sources but sometimes paraphrasing static material such as FAQs:

Other apps are very clearly rush-jobs, some even turning what is a serious global threat into a game. None of these applications are produced by authoritative official information sources such as WHO or the CDC, and most have the audacity to charge for information they had no hand in producing but have extracted verbatim from freely available sources. Information that is constantly changing. Can these authors maintain the motivation to constantly update the static advice within their applications? Can Apple's App Store approval process, with it's virtually non-existant quality assurance standards, possibly keep up? Some apps&#8212;specifically those incorporating Google Maps&#8212;are in violation of the data provider's terms of use (others are using OpenStreetMap, presumably ...

We did the Disney thing (twice was enough), fulfilled a childhood ambition to visit the Space Center at Cape Canaveral, damaged our hearing on an airboat, went kayaking with American alligators, and got some experience driving in the US.

What we got up to in pictures

We rented an apartment in Bella Piazza, located in Davenport, Polk County, Florida. The location made an ideal base for exploring the attractions of Central Florida, with a nearby supermarket and adjacent eateries.

Disney's Epcot theme park occupied us for a full day. Lots of animatronics. Each ride or pavillion supplements a sales opportunity (shouldn't that be the other way around?). It's one of those things you (almost) have to do, and probably works best if you have/ borrow children.

The Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral was a highlight. The shuttle Atlantis was already on the pad, ready for mission STS-125. Being able to walk beneath the Saturn V rocket (used in the Apollo moon landings) was awesome. We went back to KSC on our last day (tickets are valid for re-entry within 7 days) and watched a 3D IMAX movie about the International Space Station; 45 minutes of the most riveting footage I've ever seen.

The ST585v6 could create a wireless distribution system (WDS) to extend my home LAN to the attic iMac, but only over insecure WEP. So we bought a new dual-band (2.4 and 5GHz, 802.11b/g/n) Apple Time Capsule, thinking it would simplify connecting to an AirPort Express and at the same time provide wireless Time Machine backups with shared network-attached storage (NAS). In the event fully integrating this new device consumed hours, with victory arriving only after the discovery of occult keystroke trickery&#8212;not at all the Apple experience I have come to expect.

Bridging WAN and LAN

The first step was to get my BeBox working in bridge mode, functioning as a DSL modem only and handing over my public IP address to the Time Capsule. For the record (in case I need to repeat the exercise), Be sent me this advice:

If you would like to, you could switch the BeBox into bridged mode, it would then behave entirely as a modem without routing function. To do this, please follow this procedure:

	Access the SpeedTouch configuration page by opening a web browser and typing in the Address Bar 192.168.1.254;
	Click on SpeedTouch &#62; Set up;
	Click Next, then choose Multi IP 3 Data Ports;
	Click Next, then Start.

After that your BeBox will no longer be accessible through the web interface and telnet server. This will set your be box in bridge mode.

Things actually proved more ...

My personal preference is for a mix of older and contemporary tracks, with a healthy dose of variety but nothing too far outside mainstream. One such radio station is Wellington's More FM, to which you can listen live using your web browser. I'm not keen on Internet radio delivered via a browser window because I usually end up closing the tab/ window by mistake! This Saturday morning project produced an OS X app to keep in the Dock for when the urge to listen to More FM strikes; it opens a network stream and commences automatic playback, using either of the VLC or QuickTime players.

Tested under Mac OS X 10.5.6 using VLC 0.9.9 (Intel) and QT 7.6.

A browser-based player

Windows Media Player 10 content as streamed by More FM won't playback via your Mac within Safari unless you have downloaded and installed both Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X and Windows Media® Components for QuickTime from Microsoft:

This Automator application for OS X uses the Play Movie from URL automator action by Jason Prell, available from Apple here. You'll need to have installed this action and of course the veritable VLC to use it:

If Play Movie from URL is not pre-installed you'll see an error:

QuickTime is installed with Mac OS X by default. This app uses the default Run AppleScript action included with Automator, but QuickTime needs the help of Flip4Mac WMV to handle the WMA2 audio ...

At a recent iPhone OS 3.0 sneak peak event Apple unveiled a new developer API with accessory support that was exemplified by two biomedical applications.

Tricorder evolution (images &#169; GeekAlerts, Apple)

Existing options

Prior to OS 3.0 iPhone users have had access to a number of "soft" tricorder options, albeit with somewhat limited functionality. There are several excellent medical knowledge management applications for iPhone, as noted here previously and recently in the British Medical Journal. One novel app, iStethoscope (video demo here), uses the microphone of your iPhone to auscultate your heart beat; there are also entertainment value-only eye candy tricorder apps.

Coming soon

The potential for telemedical applications to upload real-time data to remote clinical information systems could revolutionise aspects of clinical governance&#8212;the right provider (your own) offering the right advice (based on actual biometrics) to the right person (authenticating with your phone) in the right place (wherever you happen to be) at the right time (now, not next week when there's a free appointment). Apple's March 17 keynote event (787MB .m4v) introducing the iPhone 3.0 OS offered a glimpse into this future. Developers can now write applications that "talk" directly to hardware accessories, such as medical devices, via the dock connector, bluetooth, or WiFi/ Internet. For example, if the iPhone were connected to a sphygnometer it could read and store blood pressure measurements, providing historical charts and trend identification. According ...

This recipe uses a WordPress theme functions.php file and the excellent Geo Mashup plug-in for WordPress. One advantage of this method is that you don't need to add custom location tags to each tweet (as you do for example here using Pipes). This method simply reads the location as set in your Twitter profile until you change it (and tweet again).

The code given here tested on Geo Mashup 1.1.3 and WordPress 2.7.1.

Setting your location in Twitter

You can manually update the text of your Twitter profile location on the web via Settings &#62; Account &#62; Location, but an easier way to do this is via a location-aware client such as Tweetie or Twitterrific for iPhone, either of which can optionally update your profile location in conjunction with a tweet:

Alternatively if you want to update your location without tweeting use a client such as Sparrow for iPhone (which will simultaneously update Fire Eagle to the same location):

Note, however, that the following code extracts your location from the Twitter user timeline so you do need to tweet before this method will reflect your new location.

You should be aware of the potential privacy issues around real-time location sharing via services such as Twitter, Yahoo!'s Fire Eagle, and Google's Latitude. Best to keep your location approximate if you publish it at all.

A function to get your location from Twitter

Create the following function in the functions.php ...
<p><a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/YDguS2zP4v3tVUeg3o_8OpeHygk/0/da"><img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~a/YDguS2zP4v3tVUeg3o_8OpeHygk/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"></img></a><br/>

I created the Quicklinks category on my blog for sharing things that didn't warrant a full post, but even that's too much effort sometimes&#8212;especially if it's just sharing a link. You might argue that's what bookmarking services like Digg and Delicious are for, but even then it's a multistep process. I've only recently become aware of just how well suited the Twitter API is to sharing links or updating your status message to multiple services with minimal effort. This post shares some PHP code to integrate your tweets within your WordPress blog, and code to simplify getting your WordPress posts into other people's tweets.

The interconnectedness of tweeting

A few examples:

	I use the Twitter updater plug-in to notify Twitter of new posts on my WordPress blog.
	Darkslide on my iPhone can post a Flickr image link via the iPhone Twitterrific app.
	Most of my links are discovered in my preferred RSS reader NetNewsWire, which can send these to desktop Twitterrific (News menu).
	The Twitter app for Facebook will update your Facebook status using your tweets.
	Twitter offer an RSS feed which can be used in conjunction with the SimplePie PHP library to bring tweets to your WordPress blog.

This last example is the focus of this post. I will assume that you have already downloaded and correctly installed SimplePie for WordPress from here.

A SimplePie template for Twitter

Create a text file called tweets.tmpl containing the following:

	{IF_ERROR_BEGIN}{ERROR_MESSAGE}{IF_ERROR_END}
 {ITEM_LOOP_BEGIN}
 {ITEM_DATE_UTC}{ITEM_DESCRIPTION}#
 {ITEM_LOOP_END}

Upload this file to the following directory on your server:

/wp-content/plugins/simplepie-plugin-for-wordpress/templates/

Now for a little ...
