In the third round, the Eagles drafted Bennie Logan, a defensive tackle out of LSU.

Scouts have mixed emotions on him. He has a strong upper body and has played very well at times. However, he is known to lack a ton of consistency at times.

Logan stands 6-3 and 295 pounds and it seems that he may be the type of player the Eagles like could he could show a lot of versatility. With his stature, it looks like Logan could potentially line up in both the middle and the outside. Regardless, there is no clear cut spot for him so I think the Eagles will like the options that he creates for them.

The Eagles approach on defense should be very interesting this year. They’ve looked to acquire a number of players who fill a lot of holes they have. Along the defensive line, they’re looking at a very different system that they’ve had in the last few years. It seems like they’ve taken the approach where they’d rather not lock any player into a particular position. Instead, they are bringing in players who could potentially fit into a number of different positions.

Logan seems like a guy who may need an extra eye on him to ensure that he stays focused. However, he looks like the type of player that can have a big upside if he performs to his full potential and plays that way consistently. I think the Eagles have a coaching staff in place that will be able to get the most out of him.

With their second round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Eagles have selected tight end Zach Ertz out of Stanford.

Ertz stands at 6-6 and 249 pounds and should be the red zone threat the Eagles have lacked over the years. Many gave him a first round grade and many ranked him higher than Tyler Eifert, the Notre Dame tight end who went in the middle of the first round.

Ertz is an athletic tight end who creates mismatches with opposing defenses. During his senior year at Stanford, Ertz racked up 69 receptions for 898 yards and six touchdowns. Oddly enough, his best game came against Chip Kelly’s Oregon Ducks where he recorded 11 receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown in an overtime win.

Many believed the Eagles may look to bulk up the tight end position in the draft this year, it was a matter of when they would do it. With a talent like Ertz still on the board early in the second round, it looks like the Eagles found it hard to pass up on him.

It will be interesting how Kelly fits him into the offense with James Casey and Brent Celek on the roster. Ertz’s athleticism should be a great pairing with Casey who is also extremely athletic and allow the Eagles to get a ton of production out of the tight end position.

There’s no doubting that Ertz will see a lot of time on the field as a rookie and I think Kelly is very high on the weapons he will have as he heads into the 2013 season.

Although it was a very interesting day for the way the draft shaped up overall, the Eagles didn’t have anything too exciting happen to them in their camp. They were tied to Lane Johnson a lot recently and ended up taking him fourth overall. This isn’t to say it wasn’t a good pick, but there weren’t any surprises around it.

Come day two, the Eagles have a lot of different directions they could go. To review, the Eagles have the 35th overall pick (second round) and 67th overall (third overall). With drafting an offensive lineman in the first round, I’d think there would be more emphasis on defense in the second and third round for the Birds.

Although they’ve added some depth to the secondary, I still think there is a lot of room to upgrade there. In the second round, they could consider Phillip Thomas out of Fresno State or John Cyprien out of Florida International at safety. At corner, Jonthan Banks could be an option out of Mississippi State. They could potentially add some depth to the defensive line here as well.

One of the interesting things at 35th overall will be the quarterback position. I’m not very high on any of these quarterbacks but it is somewhat surprising that only one of them went in the first round. Maybe that’s not surprising. The surprising part is which of them went in the first round, EJ Manuel. With Geno Smith and Ryan Nassib still available, will the Eagles be more enticed to make a play for one of them? It’s possible, but I’d rather not see them take either of them.

One position I still think they need to address is the nose tackle position. They need a young player that can plug up the middle for a number of years. There should be a number of options that are available in both the second and third rounds. Some of those players include Johnathan Jenkins out of Georgia, Jesse Williams out of Alabama, and Johnathan Hankins out of Ohio State.

In terms of other plays who are still left on the board, the Eagles may consider a few guys who they may not have expected to be on the board. Some of these players include tight end Zach Ertz out of Stanford and wide receivers Justin Hunter (Tennessee) and Robert Woods (USC).

Overall, it was a very intriguing first round and there are a very large number of options on the board for the Eagles. They added a great player and will have the opportunity to add a few more great players in the second and third rounds.

With their first pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Eagles drafted offensive tackle Lane Johnson out of Oklahoma.

It was no secret that the Eagles were interested in drafting an offensive tackle at fourth overall. They had been linked to Johnson a lot as of late and it looked for a second like they may not have the opportunity to take Johnson. After Eric Fisher and Luke Joeckel went first and second overall, Miami traded up to the third overall pick and it looked like they may take Johnson. However, in a surprising move, the Dolphins took Oregon pass rusher Dion Jordan.

This opened up the option for the Eagles to take a solid player in Johnson or trade back. They let plenty of time run down so there’s no denying that they wanted to see what phone calls they got. We can only assume no one was offering anything they were overly interested in and decided to take Johnson.

This will provide them more flexibility on the offensive line for the upcoming 2013 season. With the return of Jason Peters and Todd Herremans, they can line up Johnson at right tackle and move Herremans back inside to right guard.

Johnson has the skill set to come in and start from day one and will really solidify the line. He has plenty of athleticism and has played a lot of positions during his football career.

When you have a pick as high as the Eagles did this year, you don’t want to draft a player who can be a bust. I think Johnson was a safe pick who should pan out as a solid player.

The much awaited first day of free agency has come and the Eagles didn’t waste much time in making some additions to their roster. In just the first few hours, the Eagles have already added five new free agents: Texans TE/FB James Casey (3 years), Patriots S Patrick Chung (3 years), Rams CB Bradley Fletcher (2 years), Panthers LB Jason Phillips (2 years), and Niners NT Isaac Sopoaga (3 years).

Casey is the headliner here and was noted as a guy the Eagles had a lot of interest in. Although he wasn’t a super flashy player in Houston, he should be able to do a variety of different things for the Eagles. His main responsibilities for the Texans were as a fullback and tight end, but Chip Kelly will likely use him in an H-Back type role. It’s unclear exactly how Casey will fit into the offense but you can be sure that he’s another weapon that Kelly will utilize in a number of different packages.

Outside of Casey, the rest of the players the Eagles added were on the defensive side of the ball which should come as no surprise.

First up is Chung who could definitely have an immediate impact if he can stay healthy. He has had some injury issues recently, but is a talented and versatile safety when healthy. Chung is best known for his ability to play in the box and could be the physical force at the safety position that the Eagles have lacked since Brian Dawkins left town. If he can stay on the field, I think this will be a great addition.

The Eagles need bodies at corner after releasing Nnamdi Asomugha and letting Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie walk. Although I’m sure there will be more down the road, Fletcher is the first addition to the unit. At 6-0 and 200 pounds, he has pretty good size. He may not be the shutdown corner people are looking for, but he should be able to come in and compete for a starting spot on the roster.

Another not so flashy but helpful signing came when the Eagles added Phillips to the roster. He has been a solid special teams player which is very valuable, and I think he can add some depth to the insider linebacker group. Talented special teams player tend to be overlooked, but Phillips should definitely help improve the coverage units.

Last is the old man of the group, Sopoaga. He won’t be a guy asked to come in and be a starter on the defensive line, but he’s the first addition to the line that fits the scheme the Eagles intended to run. They need to add bodies along the line, and Sopoaga should be a solid role player as part of that group.

It was a busy day, and as many predicted, the Eagles went for a quantity of mid-level guys rather then trying to land a couple big fish. You may not be super familiar with all of these guys; I know I’m not. However, we can all remember what happened the last time the Eagles made a big splash in free agency.

The Eagles added some nice pieces to the roster today and they’re far from finished.

The Eagles need help in the secondary. There’s no denying that. Whether it be the corner or safety position, there is room for improvement. They definitely need to use the draft to help themselves out. An option they may have in the second round to strengthen the cornerback position is Mississippi State product Johnthan Banks.

Although Banks was recruited as a safety, he only played there for one season. After his freshmen year, he moved over to corner and stayed there the rest of his collegiate career.

At 6-2 and 185 pounds, Banks is a tall defender but doesn’t have a lot of meat on his bones. However, he is a very physical player and does not shy away from contact. It seems that a lot of this has to do with the fact that he may have never left that safety mentality. Mississippi State seemed to not forget his roots, allowing Banks to blitz in a variety of different packages.

When it comes to coverage, Banks has a pretty wide skill set. A knock on him has been his ability to play in man coverage, as he seems to be more comfortable in zone. This is true to an extent, but I think it’s because he just hasn’t as much experience in man coverage. Although he turned in a 4.61 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine, I’ve seen him run with faster receivers without an issue. Part of this is because he tends to play with a good cushion at the line of scrimmage and he has the ability to read receivers and open up his hips quickly when they want to go deep.

His ball skills tend to be above average. Although he doesn’t always make the most athletic play on the ball, his reach allows him to make up for that. He’s also a threat when he gets the ball in his hands as he returned punts for Mississippi State.

One thing Banks definitely has issues with is bigger players due to his thin frame. This includes big receivers or tight ends who may be on the outside blocking him as well as larger running backs. He’s not shy to make contact with anyone, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to bring down a 220 pound running back by himself.

Check out this video of Banks against Tennessee, via DraftBreakdown.com.

Banks could be taken late in the first round but could also come off the board early in the second round. If he is on the board when the Eagles come up in the second round, he may very well be a guy that they have on their radar.

He has the ability to cover at a high-level but isn’t limited just there. He can be a physical guy on the outside in the run game and also has the ability to be effective in blitz packages. Unlike a lot of corners the Eagles have seen recently, he doesn’t shy away from contact.

After being asked to cover a lot of talented wide receivers in the SEC, I think Banks is the type of guy that could come in and start from day one. He would be a nice addition to the Eagles’ secondary.

In releasing Mike Patterson and Cullen Jenkins, the Eagles have limited options along their defensive line. Add in the new defensive scheme that will be put in place and there are even more questions about who will end up playing where come Week One. Regardless, the Eagles are going to need to add some depth in both the draft and free agency. One option in the draft may be Alabama nose tackle Jesse Williams.

Williams stands at 6-3 and 323 pounds and is relatively new to the game of football. He is originally from Australia and only started playing football at the age of 15. Not only that, but he actually spent two years at Arizona Western Junior College before heading to Tuscaloosa.

In 2011, Williams played the five-technique in Alabama’s defense before spending the 2012 season at the nose tackle position. He could potentially be a guy that could play a bit of both at the next level, but most teams will likely look at Williams as a nose tackle.

Williams has a very strong upper body but tends to be known as a top heavy player. Many believe he could afford to add strength to his lower body. However, I believe Williams holds his own pretty well. He doesn’t tend to get pushed around and has plenty of power to drive blockers into the backfield. This caused him to see a lot of double teams during the 2012 season, and you want your nose tackle to eat up as many double teams as possible.

Another thing I liked out of Williams was how he seemed to never give up on plays. He’s a real hustle guy and I noticed him making a lot of tackles down the field, not something you always see out of a big defensive lineman.

When you look at Williams, you see a strong kid who is raw but has been slowly adding more and more technique to his game. At the next level, he’s going to need a lot of coaching, but I think it leaves his ceiling very high as he tries to develop his raw abilities.

Check out this video of Williams against Tennessee, via DraftBreakdown.com.

If the Eagles are interested in Williams, he should be there when they pick in the second round. They definitely need to add a body or two to the defensive line during the draft. It’s just going to be a matter of where they want to do it.

As far as the nose tackle position goes, the Eagles are hoping that Antonio Dixon will be able to play well there. However, there going to need to add a true nose tackle, and it wouldn’t hurt to add a solid one through the draft that can clog up the middle for many years.

Williams could be a strong option for them. He has a bunch of talent already and I think he can really improve with some solid coaching. I think he’s the type of guy that can get better and better as time goes on and the Eagles need a player they can rely on in the middle.

The corner position is one that is going to need to be addressed. There are some decisions that need to be made on Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, but it looks likely that the Eagles will need to bring in a corner or two who aren’t currently on the roster.

The Eagles could be interested in Dee Milliner with the fourth overall selection, but if they don’t go corner in the first round, Xavier Rhodes could be an option early in the second round.

At 6-1 and 210 pounds, Rhodes has the ideal frame you look for in a physical press corner. I’ve always preferred the type that can get up in in a receiver’s face and force them out of route rather then those who consistently sit back and let the receiver get off the line clean. An effective press corner can really through a hitch in the timing between a quarterback and receiver.

Rhodes lives at the line of scrimmage and plays in a receiver’s personal space from the snap all the way to the completion of the play. He has an effective one-handed jam move he uses from time to time, but it’s something I’d like to see him work on at the next level to get in the receivers chest quicker and maximize how he uses his long reach.

During his time at Florida State, Rhodes was a starter as a redshirt freshmen in 2010 before splitting time in 2011. He was back in the starting lineup in 2012 and had a solid year overall, recording 39 tackles, a forced fumble and three interceptions. After recording a 4.43 40-yard dash and a vertical leap of over 40 inches at the NFL Combine, Rhodes has shown that he has great athleticism that he can pair with his physicality.

Outside of pass coverage, Rhodes has room for improvement. He is a mediocre tackler and doesn’t provide strong support in the run game. From time to time, he can get off blocks pretty nicely but it’s something you’d like to see him do with more consistency. He generally tends to be uninterested in plays that aren’t heading his way as well.

Check out this video of Rhodes against Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl, via DraftBreakdown.com.

Of course, the biggest deciding factor around the value at cornerback will be what they do with the current guys on their roster and whether or not they add anyone in free agency. I don’t think retaining both Asomugha and DRC is a possibility, so if they don’t add anyone in free agency, it seems likely they’ll need to add one through the draft.

Rhodes is a guy that some believe could go in the first round. However, there is a real possibility that he could end up coming off the board early on day two. For the Eagles, this could be a guy they could pick up and plug into the defense from day one. Rhodes’ combination of speed and size allows him to effectively cover a lot of different types of receivers. He can run with faster receivers when he needs to and can get physical with bigger receivers at the line.

If the Eagles aren’t comfortable with their starting corners when draft day comes, I think Rhodes is a guy who could give them a lot of value in the second round.

Ever since Brian Dawkins left down, the Eagles have had a huge hole that has not been filled at the safety position. They’ve made multiple attempts to fill this hole via the draft and no prospect has stepped up. If they’d like to try again, Florida safety Matt Elam may be on their radar.

Elam stands at 5-10 and 208 pounds. It’s not overwhelming size but he plays very hard and knows how to deliver a big blow. His speed isn’t overwhelming either, but his 4.54 40-yard dash put him in the top five at this year’s NFL Combine among safeties.

When watching Elam play, you can see that he has a very well-balanced skill set. He has the ability to come down to the line of scrimmage and play in the box but also has the ability to play center field and make plays on the football. When playing around the line of scrimmage, he has shown that he can blitz, play the run, and also play in coverage.

In 2012, Elam accounted for 76 tackles, 11 of which were for loss. He also recorded two sacks, a forced fumble, and four interceptions. He also put up strong numbers the year before, recording 11 tackles for loss, seven pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.

You really have to like the versatility Elam has. In coverage, he is able to press and play physical but can also run and keep up with faster receivers. He also has good instincts when playing deep and reads the quarterback pretty well. These instincts and his speed allow him to help over the top when necessary and make plays on the ball.

Elam is a pretty sure tackler and can also hit with power. When he finds himself in one on one situations in the open field, he makes the play more often then he misses. This is more then can be said about a lot of players on the Eagles defense as of late.

Check out this video of Elam against Texas A&M, via DraftBreakdown.com.

A big deciding factor on the Eagles and how high they value the safety position come draft time will be whether or not they pursue a veteran in free agency. You have to believe the team would rather not use a high draft pick on a safety again if they don’t need to. However, it is definitely a position that needs to be addressed so if they don’t do so in free agency, they may very well have to resort to drafting another one.

Elam currently projects to be taken anywhere from the early to mid second round. The Eagles will pick early on in the second round so it seems fairly likely that Elam will be on the board when the Eagles pick. At the same time, they may be able to potentially trade back a few spots if a team is interested to pick up an extra pick and still have the opportunity to draft Elam.

Elam’s versatility will likely be desirable for the Eagles. With the attacking style defense that Chip Kelly says he’s interested in running, Elam would all them to bring a safety down into the box who has the ability to block and can also play well against the run. He also has the ability to come down into the slot and get physical with receivers or tight ends around the line of scrimmage.

If the Eagles are indeed interested in using another high pick on a safety, Elam looks to be the type of guy that could step in and be a good fit.

Although offensive tackle Luke Joeckel has been getting a lot of attention, small school product Eric Fisher is making a strong case that he should be the top offensive tackle off the board in this years NFL Draft. Out of Central Michigan, Fisher stands at 6-7 and 306 pounds. Despite the prototypical offensive tackle frame, Fisher showed some versatility, playing guard at times.

At the next level, Fisher will line up on the outside, but again teams should be aware that he has versatility. The majority of his tenure was at left tackle, but Fisher also lined up at right tackle for a handful of games.

What allows Fisher to succeed most at the tackle position has to be his footwork. For such a large guy, he is very quick on his feet and doesn’t let defenders beat him to the edge. He’s also able to shift and stay on defenders when they try to break off in another direction. Fisher does all of this while keeping a wide base that makes it very difficult to get around. Defenders who try to go through Fisher don’t have much success either. He keeps a fairly low center of gravity despite his height.

In the run game, Fisher uses that same low center of gravity to get underneath defenders. His long arms allow him to get a good push on smaller defenders, but he sometimes struggles to get a good push on bigger defenders. As tall as he is, he could afford to put some weight on his frame.

Fisher has decent speed for his size, recording a 5.05 40-yard dash time at this year’s NFL Combine. This gives him the ability to pull and get to the second level with effectiveness. His big frame allows him to swallow linebackers or safeties and spring big plays. He doesn’t have elite run-blocking ability, but he is more then serviceable.

Check out this video of Fisher against Michigan State, via DraftBreakdown.com.

If Joeckel is the first tackle off the board, it seems like Fisher may be available for the Eagles with the fourth overall selection. Although Joeckel has shown that he can be very successful in a read option type offense, I believe that Fisher is a better balanced tackle. He has more talent as a run blocker and is on a pretty level playing field with Joeckel as far as pass blocking goes.

The question for the Eagles will be how high they value the offensive tackle position and who else is on the board at that time. I think another desirable quality of Fisher is his experience in playing right tackle. With the return of Jason Peters, the Eagles would likely ask Fisher to play on the right side out of the gate. He could then move to the left side further down the road.

If both tackles were on the board at four and the Eagles wanted to take one, it would be interesting to see who they would value more. Joeckel may be a better fit for the offense the Eagles plan to run, but Fisher seems to be a more balanced player with more versatility.
