This article is about the Airport Express and subway system in Beijing. You can find some useful information in it if you are planning your China vacations now. The speed of the Beijing subway train is about 73.3 km / hour. Because the subway system of Beijing is very new and lots of new technologies are used to build it, most people believe that the Beiijing subway system should be advanced and convinient. But I find that this subway system is not convinient for the passengers and lots of time is wasted in the transfer stations, especially for the Line 13. I live in Beijing for almost 10 years and I think I can get a good understanding of the subway system of Beijing. It’s only 3 minutes’ ride from Jishuitan to Beijing north railway station. From the digital map, I got this info: (1). Take the Line 2 subway in Jishuitan and get off on Xizhimen. (2). Walk 150 meters and you will get to the Beijing north railway station. I decided to take the subway for this trip. At first, I thought that it will only cost me 10 minutes to get to my destination by subway. I entered the Entrance C of the Jishuitan station. There is no down escalator here and I have to walk down by myself. I am ok with this. But it will be a horrible experience for those passengers with big luggages. I took a train to Xizhimen. When I arrived at Xizhimen, I saw a direction board telling me to go to Exit A (for the Beijing north railway station). There are a lot of passengers in this subway station and you will see many people carrying big luggages here. But they have to walk up and down too in this subway station. (no escalator for the passengers who transfer to the Line 13 subway) You can imagine how hard this subway transfer could be for these people. This railway station is not just inconvenient for the passengers, it is very time consuming too. I entered the Jishuitan station on 14:02 and get to my destination - Beijing north railway station - on 14:40. Wow! 38 minutes! I spent only 5 minutes taking the subway train and the other 33 minutes was all used in the subway transfer. (many up and down stairs in the Xizhimen station) The Xizhimen transfer station is a nightmare for most passengers but it will be nothing comparing with the Military Museum Station. You will have to get off in this station if you wanna go to the Beijing west railway station by subway. There is a subway station named “Beijing west railway station” in the blueprint of the Beijing subway system. But this station is not ready till today and all the passengers have to walk to the Beijing west railway station with their big luggages. To be honest, this is not a good choice. It is too far away from the Military Museum subway station to the Beijing West Railway Station and you will be exhausted if you choose to go there on foot. You’d better take a taxi or bus instead.(more info about the Shanghai airfare, China vacations and Beijing airfare at Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM) As I know, the Fuxinmen transfer station and Guomao transfer station are very time consuming too. In my point of view, the Beijing subway system is not very convinient if you have to do some transfers to get to your destination. These transfers will cost you too much time and energy. In this case, the taxi or bus will be better for you. The Airport Express is designed for the passengers to the Beijing Capital Airport. But most people choose to take the airport bus now instead of this Airport Express subway line. I took this Airport Express once. It is not comparable with the Airport Express in Hongkong or Paris, although these two were built earlier. There is no place for big luggages in the train and you have to put your luggages in the aisle. When I get off at the Dongzhimen station, I was disappointed again. You will have to carry your big luggages by hand because there is no escalator here too just like the Xizhimen transfer station. I talked to the security guy and he told me that all the passengers from the airport have to use the stairs and he heard lots of complains about this issue. The transfer in the Dongzhimen station is very time consuming too. Because of this, you will spend more time to get to the Beijing Capital Airport if you choose to take this Airport Express subway, comparing with the airport bus. This Airport Express is more expensive too. It costs 25 rmb. But you will only need to pay 16 rmb for the airport bus. No wonder most people choose the airport bus now. This “Express” subway line is not that fast in my point of view. Another disadvantage of this Airport Express is that the train will always get to the T3 terminal first, then go to the T2 terminal. There are things that you expect to see on Park Avenue in Manhattan - chauffeurs waiting for their passengers, the children of millionaires out strolling with their nannies - and then there are things you don’t, such as the union rally held there this week. New York’s legions of uniformed doormen are nothing if not polite, but their ultimatum was firm: if their demands for improved pay are not met by midnight tonight the city will face its first doormen’s strike for 15 years. “You would think if any group of people would not want to demonstrate what life would be like without them it would be doormen,” the comedian Jerry Seinfeld once observed. Without a doorman, “people open the door, they walk in … who’s gonna walk out next? The guys who clean your windshield at the traffic light, with the dirty rag?” But the threatened absence of the city’s 28,000 apartment-building workers would not pass unnoticed. Doormen occupy a unique and complex niche in the New York class system. The services they provide may seem superfluous - holding open the door, taking delivery of packages, hailing cabs - but for wealthier residents their symbolic value is far greater. They demarcate the boundary between Manhattan’s most pristine apartment blocks and the street outside. And they serve, quite simply, as living reminders to the tenants that they are rich enough to afford a doorman. “Park Avenue stands for money,” Mike Fishman, president of the local 32BJ union, which represents doormen, told the rally. “The rich are getting richer, and what’s happening to the middle class? The middle class is becoming the working poor.” Members are protesting against a wage freeze imposed by building owners, who say they must offset the costs of providing workers with health insurance. It is not yet a case of class war, more a civilised class disagreement, but it has thrown into relief the contradictions of the role - what Peter Bearman, a Columbia University professor who wrote an anthropological study of New York doormen, calls “too much closeness in a context of too much distance”. Doormen know everything about their tenants, Prof Bearman discovered, but tenants have a tendency to look through their doormen. Perhaps in an effort to render their role more palatable 90% of doormen say their main function is to provide security. But about the same percentage, according to Prof Bearman’s research, say they have never had to deal with a security incident. David, a doorman on duty in Park Avenue this week who did not want his full name to be used, said: “I don’t want to say they’re spoilt, but it costs a lot of money to live here and a doorman is one of the things you get for the money.” He confirmed the widespread suspicion that living in a doorman building essentially eliminates one’s privacy. “You do get to know things. I’m not gonna name names, but there was this gentleman - he’s dead now - and his wife travelled in Europe twice a year. The moment she was gone, like clockwork, his girlfriends would be round. But what can you do? You say ‘Hello, how are you? Isn’t it a lovely day?’” Some residents had worked out that having personal conversations in the building’s lobby was a bad idea, David said. “They speak real hushed here, because they know the doorman can hear. And then as soon as they’re in the elevator, they have really personal conversations.” He shook his head. “But the thing is - we have an elevator guy. What’s he gonna do? You can’t stuff your ears.”

Drive with care Like one thirds of the nations of this world, cars in the UK drive on the left side of the road so always be mindful of that, especially when crossing the road ? always look right first! UK drivers tend to be very polite.  In many countries, a driver who flashes his headlamps means ‘get out of my way’ ? in the UK it means the opposite and is  used to signal to an on-coming driver that you are allowing him to pass.  Britain is a relatively small island and the cities tend to be buys, therefore driving laws are tough and strictly enforced particularly drink driving (which is a criminal offence). 5. The Weather The weather in the UK is very changeable and it has been said that the UK can have four seasons in a single day.  Many overseas students will have heard that it rains a lot in the UK.  This is unfortunately true, and there can be quite a lot of wind, especially in Northern towns such as Manchester,  so remember to bring warm and waterproof clothing.  However, the sun does follow the rain and the UK weather is very much liked for it’s variety. 6. Security and Personal Safety The UK is relatively safe but some simple rules can help keep you safe.  Always lock all doors and windows.  Collect money during day light hours.  Women should try to travel with others.  Taxis are often the best form and safest of transport, but always use a company that is well known. “All hope abandon, ye who enter here.” Dante Alighieri. “The way down to hell is easy. The gates?stand open day and night. But to retrace one’s steps and escape to upper air ? that is toil, that is labor.” Virgil. On March 22, 2003, the Department of Defense announced the identities of two Marines killed in action in Southern Iraq. Second Lieutenant Therrel S. Childers of Mississippi and Lance Corporal Jose Gutierrez of California became the first Americans to die for the ambitions of the White House warlords and the little man with an inferiority complex who should never have become president ? even in his dreams. History is a strange and fascinating tale. What historians make of this president will be a fiercely fought battle between those with integrity and those with a political agenda. While past presidencies have been held somewhat in check by the knowledge that historians will hold them to account, the current lot believes it is immune to historical judgment. They are determined to control the pen with which the tale is told. They will discredit all accounts contrary to their interests and reduce history itself to the basest form of propaganda. If it were not so tragic, it would be amusing to observe the machinations of media in reporting the war and occupation of Iraq. In the absence of compelling distracter stories, they seem to have awakened from a long slumber (if only momentarily) to discover there is still a war going on. They pretend that the latest series of attacks represent a sudden upsurge in response to political events. In truth, the violence has been a steady rumble, geared only to opportunity, and the media treatment is a cover for their collective failure to report on the ongoing disaster. On April 20, a fifth attempted assassination of interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi fails, four Iraqis are killed and thirteen wounded in Baghdad. Three police officers are killed, nineteen bullet-ridden bodies are identified in Haditha, and fifty bodies float down the Tigres, confirming rumors of mass hostage taking and executions. On April 22, a car bomb near a Baghdad mosque kills eleven and wounds 20, the bodies of nineteen soldiers are found near Baiji, a government official in Mosul is assassinated, and fourteen mercenaries are killed when their chopper is shot from the sky. On April 23, a roadside bomb kills nine soldiers and wounds 20 outside Baghdad, another kills a civilian in Samarra, another on the road to the Baghdad airport kills one and wounds seven, more bombs kill two soldiers and injure three in Yusifiya, two civilians are killed in Baquba, and two more are killed in Basra with two children wounded. President Bush appeals to Congress in his weekly radio address for another $81.9 billion for the war effort. His voice is confident and his words are optimistic. Progress is being made. The Iraqi security forces outnumber US forces. “Like free people everywhere, Iraqis want to be defended and led by their own countrymen.” On April 24, bombs in Baghdad kill fifteen, wounding 40, while bombs in Tikrit kill six police and wound 35 unidentified others. The march of death continues unabated, unaffected by the words of the president or the latest moves of the Iraqi government. The end of April and the beginning of May bring a torrent of violence, death and bloodshed. News stories roll out a daily death toll of mostly anonymous victims: 50, 70, 120, 140, 200, 245 dead and at least twice that many wounded. Occupation forces round up the usual suspects but indiscriminate mass arrests have no discernable effect. The violence continues. The civil war is on. A reporter reveals it now costs $35,000 for a six-mile taxi ride to the airport. Lacking a small mercenary army, you cannot get in and you cannot get out. Welcome to Baghdad: The Gates of Hell are open for business. Like the fall of Saddam, the appointment of an interim government and the election, itself, the christening of a new ministry did not have the desired effect. The vast majority of casualties on the side of the occupying forces are no longer American soldiers; they are allied Iraqis, police, militia and contractors ? the euphemism of choice for mercenaries. How much is a man paid to enter the Gates of Hell and descend to its lower depths like Dante and his guide Virgil? It is a closely guarded secret and one reason for the extraordinary cost of this endeavor. There is a special place in Dante’s inferno for those who perform evil deeds for money and an even crueler place for those who paid the hired torturers, killers and assassins so that their hands would remain unstained. Iraq may not approach the mind-numbing destruction of Vietnam but it is more resembling Algiers with every passing day. For those who require historical review, Algiers was the last stop for French ambitions of a new Napoleonic era. At the beginning of the Muslim uprising, the insurgents were demeaned as terrorists and thugs. The insurgency would never last. The people of Algiers loved their French masters. The people of France, though never directly consulted, supported the continued occupation. The Battle of Algiers raged on for six years. At every turn, the French proclaimed imminent victory. At every turn, they were wrong. Indiscriminate killings, mass imprisonment, torture, bombs carried in baskets by women and children, assassinations, strikes, and the insurgency refused to die. It would calm until the occupiers grew complacent and then it would erupt again. After six years of costly failure, the endgame was clear (in fact, it was always clear) and the verdict in French public opinion finally sealed its fate. Though they left a nation torn and tattered, impoverished and divided, the occupation of Algiers failed. Historically, the only occupations that ever succeeded were those that employed mass murder and genocide (i.e., the conquest of North America). The occupation of Iraq will reach the same inevitable conclusion as Algiers. It is only a question of how long and how costly. Much depends on the verdict of the American people. We have been shielded from the daily horrors of Iraq but we cannot escape our fair share of responsibility. It would be too easy to fix all of the blame for the atrocities of this war at the president’s feet but it would be neither just nor accurate. He has had his collaborators, beginning with Tony Blair and ending with those who sold out at first sighting of the purple finger of fate. The White House has the excuse of rose-colored glasses. They were blinded by their own twisted sense of destiny. The turncoats should have known better than to believe in the value of a media controlled event. They would have known if they were not so eager to cut and run. It is difficult being right in America today. It is difficult to maintain a career in the media and oppose governmental outrage. It is difficult proclaiming the obvious: that both dominant parties are wrong, have been wrong, and will continue to be wrong as long as money is on the table. “All we like sheep have gone astray.” Isaiah 53:6. Critics of the Bush administration are wrong when they claim that the warlords are victims of their own faith. If they had any faith at all, they would dismantle the Gates of Hell now while it is still possible. If they believed in the sanctity of life and the rewards of virtue, they would have ended the suffering long ago. “Long is the way and hard, that out of hell leads up to light.” John Milton. I did not know their mothers or fathers or the enduring grief they must live with as the years of absence accumulate. I do not know the names of the first Iraqis to die in this war but I am no less certain they had friends, loved ones and families as well. I am certain that their sorrow and grief is no less enduring. I am certain that their numbers are far greater and their nightmare is the ongoing hell of their daily lives under the occupation of their native land. Jazz. One day I got a call from my credit card company asking me if I would like to increase my credit limit by borrowing up to $9000 at their special rate of 15.9%. The operator stated, “Your credit card rate will then be a low 15.9%. How much would you like to transfer today to take advantage of this offer? Do you have any high interest loans you would like to pay off and reduce your payments?”The previous day I had called them to get two bogus late payment charges taken off my statement. I also had to get my interest rate lowered back to my usual rate rather than the “penalty rate” (22.9%) they charge to anyone who is late, misses a payment or goes over their credit limit.Wondering if my rate got changed back to my usual rate, I asked the operator what my current rate was. She said that it was at 12.9%, which was my usual rate for this card.I do carry some debt on other cards (it helps with my credit rating to be making regular payments) but all the other debt I have is at lower rates than this card. I mentioned that I had no other debt that was at a higher rate than what she was offering.She then replied that I could just take the money as a cash advance and do whatever I wanted with it.So I asked her if I understood correctly what she was offering. “So you are offering to raise my interest rate if I get further into debt by getting a cash advance?”"Yes, you can have up to $9000 and do whatever you like with the extra cash,” she replied. I was amused that she said that I could “have” not “borrow” the money and it would be “extra cash” rather than “additional debt”. But after all, she is in sales and the words “have” and “extra cash” are much more enticing than the more realistic alternatives - “borrow” and “additional debt”.I politely told her that I was not interested in raising my interest rate or borrowing more money, “but thanks anyway.”I then wondered how many other people would jump at the opportunity to pocket a quick $10,000 at the “low” rate of 15.9%. I was also amused that she encouraged me to pay off my high interest debt with this money. Well, to my standards 15.9% is high interest debt. Granted it’s not the 24-25% charged by department stores but still it was more than I was currently being charged on any of my other cards.Shouldn’t an offer that would appeal to me be one that offered me money at a lower rate? Her offer seemed backwards. The most popular nightclub is under a big marquee and its catchy, rhythmic music fills the dusty street. Taxi drivers linger nearby, waiting for the late night business of ferrying the bar-goers to hotels, boarding houses and brothels. They also offer their passengers a more unusual service: condoms, along with advice on safe sex. Yesterday’s UNAids report, which shows that almost 30 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are already infected with HIV or Aids, has a particularly chilling relevance to Zambia. The country has one of the world’s highest rates of HIV/Aids infection, with nearly 20% of the adult population infected. Livingstone, a tourist centre perched above Victoria Falls, has the country’s highest infection rate: 31% of adults, according to government statistics. Despite the desperate statistics, the town offers glimpses of hope. A project to train taxi drivers to act as safe sex teachers and mentors is one of several reaching out to groups exposed to the threat of the virus. “Aids is a severe problem here. We all know people who have died and people who are suffering. A taxi driver died recently,” says cabbie David Kanandu. “We’ve learned how to protect ourselves and we are telling others. We give pamphlets and condoms to our passengers. We tell them how to reduce their risks.” Fishermen, army soldiers, truck drivers, teenagers and prostitutes are all targeted in programmes designed at Livingstone’s Sepo centre, which receives funding and training from the Brighton-based International HIV/Aids Alliance. The taxi drivers attended a two-day weekend workshop two months ago and now they are enthusiastic sex counsellors. “This has opened our minds,” says Mr Kanandu. “We’ve learned that having sex must be done with knowledge. That way we can avoid catching Aids.” The taxi drivers hope to expand their programme. They are talking about setting up an outdoor screening of sex education videos near their ranks. “People would come to see the videos and then we could have group discussions,” says Wilson Mvula, 28. A key part of the community programmes is the promotion of voluntary testing and counselling. “Everyone is a winner in the testing,” says nurse Precious Mafo, who runs the Maramba clinic’s testing centre. “Those who are negative are obviously happy and are encouraged to take steps to avoid infection. Those who are positive are counselled to live as positively as possible, to have good diets and habits, and this also helps many people.” Good diet helps, but only to a point. As the UNAids report points out, anti-retroviral drugs are desperately scarce in Africa, and Zambia is no exception. With 1 million Zambians living with HIV and Aids, it is estimated that 100,000 need anti-retrovirals immediately. Jethro Muchindu, 47, found out he was HIV positive in 1987. “I have been doing very well for a long time, but I would really love to get on the anti-retrovirals. Sometimes I get sick and I worry about my recovery. Those drugs would really help.” Out of reach The anti-retrovirals are limited to a few private clinics and the University Teaching hospital in Lusaka. Only a few Zambians can afford the ?325 a year needed for the treatment. “The cost is totally out of reach of most Zambians,” says Daphetone Siame, director of the Zambian programme for the HIV/Aids Alliance. At Hillcrest secondary school more than 100 students cram into a classroom to attend the Family Life Club, an after-class activity that concentrates on sex education. The teenage students groan in disgust when given descriptions of vaginal and anal sex and other sexual behaviour. “Don’t be fooled by their innocence,” says a club organiser. “Many of them, especially the girls, have already had sex. Yet they don’t know very much.” Kaleesh Bwalya, 17, is the head of the club. She stands in front of the group and and captures attention by mentioning headboy Henry Kalubi when describing someone who might carry HIV or other infections. “Look at Henry, he is clean, good looking, he’s a good student, he’s got cash in his pocket. But even he could have an STI,” she says to rounds of laughter. Henry says he does not mind the embarrassment of talking about sex. “As youths we must take up a role in educating one another. We are surrounded by Aids and it is only through education that we can avoid getting it ourselves.”

A family fleeing from Cuba commandeered a vintage taxi and sailed it 70 miles across the sea to the United States. Coastguards spotted the sky blue 1950s vehicle bobbing across the waves towards them as they patrolled the Florida Straits. The DIY water-taxi had been fitted with a boat prow and a propeller to help it cut through the rough seas. Hanging out of the windows were up to 13 Cubans, including two children. The refugees, some of whom are thought to have been among the so-called Truckonauts who attempted the voyage in a converted pick-up in 2003, were given lifejackets and taken ashore by the US coastguard. “Hopefully this time they won’t go back,” said Mariana Diaz, a Cuban exile in Miami, who claimed that her nephew, Rafael Diaz Reyes, was one of those aboard the taxi. Similar attempts to reach Florida in floating vehicles in July 2003 and February 2004 ended in his repatriation.

The city of Guangzhou in China, known as Canton until 1949 and still referred to that way by many Westerners, is one of the new capitals of global trade. In addition to being the home of thousands of Chinese and multinational businesses, it also hosts the world’s largest trade fair, known as the China Import and Export Fair as well as its unofficial name, the Canton Fair. The Fair is held twice a year, and the first one in 2009 will be the 105th in its history. Because of its worldwide influence and the well-attended Fairs, there is a constant influx, as well as a permanent community, of foreigners. While the hospitality and innate honesty of the Chinese people is well known, there are unscrupulous people everywhere, and Guangzhou is no exception. Foreigners are targeted for any number of scams, among which is the widespread “taxi scam.” How it works Taxi scams have become quite common in Guangzhou, especially during the twice-yearly Canton Fair, but visiting foreigners are always at risk for this petty deceit no matter when they visit. The drivers quote an inflated price, or take roundabout routes to increase their fares and find other creative ways to charge customers extra. Passengers can end up paying from three to 10 times the metered fare during Fair days, in particular, but overcharging takes place year-round. The fact is, overcharging is only one of the ways that cab drivers can defraud foreign customers. Some cab drivers will give change in counterfeit bank notes, while others will not return lost or misplaced luggage to the owners. How to handle it Almost all visiting foreigners have encountered some kind of taxi scam in Guangzhou, many of them during Canton Fair days, but normally they do not know how to handle the problem. Even if they suspect overcharging, their lack of language skills and unwillingness to cause a scene tend to make them pay the extra amount. If foreigners traveling in Guangzhou do not know how to handle this problem, and are affected by the aforementioned language barrier, they are easy targets for scammers. These travelers should not feel powerless, however, since the punishment for taxi scams is severe, and a complaint can cause immediate suspension of a taxi driver’s license by the local authorities. Just knowing this much can help suspicious travelers protect themselves from being overcharged. Ken Lin is the manager for the Canton Fair Division of Wentrip.com, one of the foremost service agents for business travelers to China. A fixed asset is typically a piece of kit purchased by a business that will be used by that business to generate a profit over a period of time, perhaps more than one year, as opposed to an item that is consumed within the financial year. Items in the category of fixed assets may be plant and machinery, fixtures and fittings, computers and vehicles. For most fixed assets the capital tax allowance consists of an enhanced first year allowance in the year of purchase and writing down allowance in subsequent years. This type of tax allowance spreads the allowance of the amount spent over the life of the asset rather than that item being expensed in full in the year the purchase was made. For small businesses the first year allowance is currently 50%, 2007-08 and in subsequent years the writing down allowance is 25% of the balance. Special rules apply to vehicles and of particular interest when preparing the taxi driver accounts. These special rules certainly affect taxi drivers many of whom will find they are not eligible to claim the 50% first year allowance on their taxi. Vehicles, including taxis are generally excluded from the 50% first year allowance and may not be claimed in the taxi driver accounts. In addition the 25% writing down allowance is restricted to a maximum of 3,000 pounds p.a. The writing down allowance continues until the value of the vehicle is written off for tax purposes or is sold. When a vehicle is sold if the vehicle is sold at a price below the written down value for tax purposes then an additional capital tax allowance can be claimed in the taxi driver accounts. The additional tax allowance is equal to the difference between the price at which the vehicle was sold and the net written down value for tax purposes. When a vehicle is sold at a price above the net written down value for tax purposes there is a deduction in the capital allowances which is called a balancing charge and is equal to the sales value less the written down value for tax purposes. Commercial vehicles are treated differently to cars. First year allowances can be claimed against the purchase price of vans that are deemed to be commercial vehicles. The Inland Revenue website has a list of vans it deems to be a commercial vehicle and the make and model of any van thought by the owner to be a commercial vehicle should check that vehicle against the list when claiming a first year allowance. The writing down allowance on commercial vehicles is not restricted to 3,000 pounds. Capital tax allowances on commercial vehicles is then the same as a typical piece of plant and machinery whereby a 50% first year allowance can be claimed in the first year with a 25% writing down allowance in subsequent years. The capital allowances act 2001 makes a distinction between cars and qualifying hire cars. Cars are subject to the restrictions on capital tax allowances applied to vehicles while qualifying hire cars are not subject to these restrictions in a similar way to which qualifying vans, commercial vehicles are treated. The definition of what constitutes a qualifying hire car as opposed to a car is crucial to taxi drivers when the taxi driver accounts are being prepared either by the taxi driver or the taxi accountant. Simply using a car solely as a taxi is not sufficient to avoid the capital allowance restrictions. Using a vehicle which is deemed to be a qualifying hire vehicle is sufficient to allow a first year allowance and unrestricted writing down allowances to be claimed in the taxi accounts To comply with the definition of a qualifying hire car the vehicle must be of a type that is not commonly used as a private vehicle and would also be unsuitable for use as a private vehicle. Hackney carriages, black cabs and limousines fall into the category of a qualifying hire car and taxi drivers using these types of vehicle may claim the 50% first year allowance and the 25% writing down capital allowance in subsequent years in the taxi driver accounts. Other vehicles used as taxis would not receive the first year allowance but would be subject to writing down allowance of 25% of the original cost in the first year and a further 25% in succeeding years all subject to a maximum of 3,000 pounds per vehicle per annum. In addition when preparing the taxi driver accounts taxi drivers should note that if the taxi is also used for personal use then a further deduction in tax allowances is applicable according to the percentage that the taxi is used for personal business.

Each April our thoughts turn to the coming of spring and the coming of the tax man. I hear a lot of people complaining about taxes at this time of year. Not just that they have to do their taxes and spend hours pouring over old records and trying to figure out indecipherable forms, but also musings and opinions about taxes in general. I often hear the opinion expressed that businesses, property owners and “rich people” do not pay their fair share of taxes. And I agree. I agree that they don’t pay their “fair share” as defined in most people’s minds. But I also think that in certain circumstances, these businesses and people shouldn’t have to pay any taxes. That may sound a bit radical for many people reading this, but allow me to explain my reasoning. First, why are we taxing businesses on their profits? A business exists, whether it is a sole proprietorship or a large international corporation, to make a profit. People create businesses and invest in stocks with the idea that they will get a share of the profits. This is the basis of our system of capitalism. It is the motivation for a free marketplace and private ownership of property. Why would anyone go to the trouble of starting a business unless they expected a significant return on their investment of money and time? Why would you bother buying stock in a company if the company never gave you any dividends (yes, stocks can appreciate, but bear with me)? There comes a point when deciding where to invest your time and money that you have to figure out how much return you need to make your effort worthwhile. If you work at a job and earn $30,000 a year, how much will your business have to make to replace your income? How much more do you want it to make for taking the risk of quitting your job and building a business? If you can’t make much more than the $30,000, it hardly seems worth it to spend all the extra time and take the extra risk of starting the business. So let’s say that you figure you can earn $50,000 with your business. And that is enough to take the risk. But now the government comes along and tells you that you have to pay $7,000 in taxes on your $50,000 business profit. Now you have a choice. Live with less or increase your business income. Living with less defeats the whole purpose so let’s look at increasing your business income. You can either increase your business income by getting more clients, selling more goods or raising your prices. When you are in a less competitive market, raising your prices is the easiest thing to do. So you raise your prices. Now you are earning the $50,000 you wanted in the first place and you have effectively passed your business taxes on to your customers. But not only are your customers paying a higher cost for your product or service but they may also be paying more in sales taxes. They get a double-whammy. If your customers are businesses, they will pass on their increased costs to their customers. This cycle continues until the cost of every business’ taxes are eventually passed on to the consumer - me and you. Let’s look at a specific and simpler example of how this works. I know a person who owns some rental units. The city in which they are located passed a tax on rental units. Some politicians and local activists were anxious to punish the “gouging landlords” and “rental robber-barons”. They figured that they could play Robin Hood and redistribute some of the rich landlord’s profits to the “needy”. Now my friend’s costs have gone up. So what did he do? Naturally, he raised the rents to cover the cost of the additional tax. And since it is easier to accept a reasonable rent increase than to move, his tenants stayed put and paid more. Ironically, most of his tenants are the same people who the politicians and activists consider the “needy”. So now the government takes an extra $20 a month out of their pockets through the “tax on the landlord”. If the tenant is on an assistance program they may get some of this money back. Of course the amount they get back will be reduced by expenses and administrative costs for the government to collect, control and distribute the money. So who really paid for this tax? The landlord? No, in the end it is always people - you and me. All taxes are paid by the citizens themselves, regardless of whether they are paid directly, as in sales and income taxes, or through increased prices of products and services, or through “fees” imposed by governing agencies. How does your car registration “fee” differ from a tax? Not only does each citizen directly or indirectly pay every penny of tax money that is collected in this country, but most people’s perception that the “rich” and “corporations” don’t pay their “fair-share” is accurate. These people and businesses can afford to pay an attorney $10,000 to show them how to save $500,000 in taxes. Most likely, you can’t. The tax laws are made with loopholes for the “rich” and for certain businesses. Part of this is because it is these people who own or control the majority of the property in this country. And no progress can be made with out a significant investment of capital. If these people and businesses are given the right reasons to invest their capital (such as tax breaks) the economy will continue to function and grow. If they are overburdened with taxes they will either move to Bermuda or start a cycle of inflation by raising prices. Either way, you, Joe Citizen, will end up paying more either directly in the form of taxes or indirectly as your cost of living increases. It is a double-edged sword. Joe Citizen wants “rich people” and businesses to pay their fair share (though Joe does not realize that he ends up paying it anyway) but the government knows that they can’t kill the golden goose (and the economy needs a good “goose” every once in a while). So tax laws and regulations are passed which seem to target the “rich people” and businesses but with enough loopholes so that no real tax increase occurs. And the politicians can blame the other party for the loopholes. But both know this is business as usual. Make Joe Citizen feel good about paying his taxes by raising taxes on the “rich” and “wealthy corporations”, but give them loopholes so that little more is accomplished than adding another volume added to the tax code. For the ultimate beach vacation there is no better location than that of “Jomtien Beach” in Thailand which is just a two hours ride in a taxi from Bangkok Airport. The Jomtien Beach is located about two kilometers from its busy counterpart resort of South Pattaya. Jomtien and the area along its beach road have now become more and more popular for swimming, water sports and activities because it has a long straight coastline and they’re being less boats anchored in its waters. There are very many good quality hotels, bungalows and guesthouses. A wide range of small and large condominiums is also available for short or long term rental and many good restaurants serving a wide variety of fresh seafood with a full range of Thai cuisine and International dishes. Many tourists come to this area to just enjoy the scenery and the beach. Chairs are available to sit with a table to have food and drink served directly to you as you soak up the sun or simply lay back and listen to the waters lapping on the sand. Go swimming or enjoy water sports such as wind surfing, ride a water scooter, parasail or take a speed boat ride, even water skiing is possible. The Jomtien Beach has good quality white sand and a very long coastline to enjoy. The beach is much more peaceful here than its counterpart of Pattaya further up the coast. The beaches are always kept in a pristine condition by the many vendors who are there to look after all your needs. Along the early part of the straight beach road you will find many souvenir shops, international restaurants, food stalls. But at the far end of the beach road there are very good seafood restaurants and it is where you can find yourself at times the only person soaking up the sun. You can also swim late into the night along a large part of the beach as the sands are floodlit which makes for a very safe environment to swim after the sun has gone down. May be you only want to simply find a quiet bar for any drink of your choosing. Many are available and the prices have to be seen to be believed. Jomtien beach simply has it all without having to travel long distances. But if you fancy a more adventurous evening and want to enjoy a full range of nightlife activities Pattaya is just a few minutes down the coast. Transportation around the Pattaya and Jomtien area is simple. The open pick up cars (Baht buses as they are locally called) are running all the time. Just hail one down and climb aboard. Effective land and rail connections to London Stansted is vital to ensure smooth passage through this iconic transport interchange. Despite its name London Stansted Airport is, like it sister airports Heathrow and Gatwick, not based on London, in fact it is some 30 miles north. I have travelled to and from Stansted Airport for the best part of 18 years, since the early days of the new terminal. IN that time transport links have improved ten fold, with the introduction of a fast direct London-Stansted rail link and regular coach services. Most notably however has been the development of raod infrastructure in and arund the airport over the past decade. So what is the best way to travel to and from Stansted by taxi/chauffeur. As many of you will already know, the market for taxi/chauffeur work is immense. This however does have a downside - with som many operators, large and small, how do you choose the right one for you? When we mention Stansted taxis I suppose the first thing for readers to note is that Stansted does not have a bonafide taxi “rank”. Despite there being signs indicating taxis in the main terminal the row of “taxis’ to the front of the airport are in fact private hire vehicles. Now readers may think, so what? If like me you have ever travelled from Heathrow Airport by london cab you will have hired the cab from the number of licensed taxi ranks at the arrivals area of each terminal - the difference being that the fare is determined by the meter in the cab, not a price from a reception desk. Now as a seasoned traveller I prefer this for a number of reasons - 1. One you can have confidence in the rate being charged as this has been set by the licensing authoirity - in this case - Transport for London 2. The price is what the meter says - no argument. 3. Rate cards on show for you to examine and understand when inside the cab At Stansted, the “taxi rank” is managed by BAA’s preferred taxi operator Checker Cars. Without any bonafide taxis we have established that this is a private hire operation. Based in the airport terminal they do operate pretty much a monopoly which is non-too pleasing to a seasoned traveller like me. They are however, quick, on time, convenient and clean cars - though you do pay a premium. Given that the market for private hire/taxi/chauffeurs is large I would also suggest investigating other locally based operations to Stansted. One local operation operates executive Audi vehicles and are known as Stansted Airport taxi & Chauffeur Services. They are located within 2 minutes drive of the main terminal building, can monitor all flight times from their office base to ensure that they are on hand to take you to wherever you want to go without you paying excessive parking fees, and their cars are always immaculately presented. Their prices are extremely keen too, on some routes almost 30% cheaper than Checkers Cars!! Stansted Airport Taxi & Chauffeur Services can be contacted on +44 [0] 1279 816901 24 hours a day. Given their close proximity to the airport, prompt, reliable service they are currently my stansted taxi choice. If you would prefer not to use an executive car service, then another local service, Herts and Essex taxi Service based in nearby Bishop’s Stortford offer excellent budget value services. Their cars are clean but basic; however their prices are extremely competitive! For those of you that require an environmentally friendly vehicle to collect you from London Stansted, I would recommend Green Tomato Cars. Based in London, their London taxi service is a convenient and clever way to reduce your carbon footprint!

Just a short 15 minute flight from the international airport of Juliana on St Maarten. The fact that St Barts airport can only accommodate small aircraft and that incoming and outbound flights stop at sunset, maintains the island€„¢s intimate and exclusive character. Especially during the heavy traffic months of November thru to April when a lot of scheduled flights from St Barts to St Maarten are over booked, delayed or cancelled.
