I have an unlimited data plan with AT&T. But here’s what happens when I use it to stream Pandora (instead of relying on my shitty home connection with Digital Path).

I called them. It’s a result of a change they made in the last year or few. They say I’ll still get unlimited data, but that if I use over 3GB, they’ll slow me down so I have a 10-12 second delay for music and video.

I don’t think that that is why its funny. I think it has a lot more to do with the fact that the guy just stops and recites these random ass tweets, almost like he is some sort of human twitter client. I mean, just imagine a construction site where every 30 seconds someone has to stop what they are doing to recite a random tweet.

No. Let me tell you as a comedian, there is a specific reason they chose a guy with a beard to read tweets from “young female celebrities”. The individual tweets themselves are selected for specific reasons, too. This is about a contrast between gender stereotypes that is played for laughs.

1. Guys are considered Serious, the ones who do the Real Work, while young girls are considered frivolous and shallow (“…stare at pictures of yogurt.” Yogurt, BTW, is also inexplicably gendered in the media).

2. Guys are considered tough, girls are considered weak. (“I feel vulnerable after a nap.”) The beard is actually crucial on this one, because it’s used as a symbol of ruggedness.

3. In the same vein, guys are supposed to like “tough” things, girls are supposed to like fluffy things. (“Nothing better than puppy cuddles”)

4. Guys are expected to have deep voices. When they do anything in a way that “sounds like a girl” it’s considered funny and emasculating, because femininity is coded as inferior. (“when I sneeze I sound like Snow White”)

Etc. Etc. Etc.

This sketch would not have been approved for airing if he just read random tweets. Guaranteed. The gag here is the intentional contrast between Burly Dudes and Petite Young Women. The contrast of archetypes is the point of the sketch, it’s the very root of the gag.

Comedy can be used to call into question the things we take for granted. It brings down people’s defenses and can get them to see another point of view. It can be used other ways as well. This sketch is a great example of how comedy can be used to point out ridiculous dichotomies of social order—in order to reinforce them instead of question them.

This exact act was part of Amaluna when I went to see it earlier this year, and I swear, I have never heard an audience so quiet in my LIFE. I remember thinking at the time, too, that I had never imagined an audience holding its collective breath to see if someone could keep a stack of things balanced that way before, but the audience reactions were very much like the ones in this video. It was amazing.

Why? Because they’ve already stopped taking women’s rights seriously.

You don’t tell people who address racism or transphobia or eating disorders or bullying or hate crimes to ‘lighten up’ or ‘take a more positive attitude’. Why? Because you acknowledge that they are addressing a serious problem.

Sexism kills. Through rape culture, through eating disorders, through the girl that didn’t have access to a safe abortion, through the girl that didn’t recognize an abusive relationship or wasn’t believed, through the girl whose naked pictures got spread over the internet and who was shamed until she kills herself.

People are dying because of sexism. So if you’re telling feminists to ‘stop being so negative’, you have your head very very far up the patriarchy’s arse.

I’m pretty sure the OP was in response to this post about the person who just bought Tumblr saying she doesn’t consider herself a feminist because feminists are just too negative.

Yeah I get that, but the part that says “You don’t tell people who address racism or transphobia or eating disorders or bullying or hate crimes to ‘lighten up’ or ‘take a more positive attitude’. Why? Because you acknowledge that they are addressing a serious problem.” is just false. Any time I’ve addressed any of those topics I get someone, or several people, telling me to calm down, telling me I’m angry about nothing and looking for a reason to argue, that I’m imagining things, that I’m just choosing to be negative and ignoring the positives. And I know that’s not just my experience because I see it all over the internet. The OP is right that people don’t take feminism seriously, but privileged/ignorant people across the board are dismissive to anyone complaining about a problem they can’t relate to or understand. The post tries to make it seem like every other cause gets the seriousness and respect it deserves, when in reality that routinely just does not happen.

Honestly I think one of the biggest distinctions with feminism, is that word, “feminism”, because it makes it easy for people to attack the people who label themselves with feminist, without attacking the values or goals of feminism (or so they think). If there was similarly a widely used word for being pro racial equality, like POCism, them people would similarly be saying “I’m of course for equality for everyone, but I wouldn’t call myself POCist, because they’re just too negative.”

Agh. See, the whole time I’ve been reading that as prescriptive, not descriptive. Like, as an instruction, not a statement of what is generally done.

Yeah, that is how I meant it. Like: “You, my sensible social justicy followers realize that racism and eating disorders and bullying are serious things and that the statement ‘just lighten up’ would be ridiculous, so you should realize that the statement ‘feminists should lighten up’ is equally ridiculous.

That’s what I meant anyway, I’ll try to state that more clearly next time. I did not mean people never get told to lighten up when they address racism or eating disorders or bullying etc. I know that happens all the time.
