There were some very interesting articles in the design blogosphere this week. The My Ink Blog post about the left-brained / right-brained paradox is a good read, although I admit I'm not in complete agreement. Also, make sure to check out the jQuery plugin linknotify() by Brian Cray. (finish reading on website)

M. Joshua Cauller is a designer working out of York, Pennsylvania. In 2003 he earned an associates degree in digital art from the Art Institute of York. He has worked in Television and video production as well as web design. Right now he is the Art Director for the Barry Group where he oversees web design and video production. Take a look at his personal portfolio site for a showcase of projects he's worked on in the past.

M. Joshua is involved in Dove Community Cell Church where he serves as a cell group leader. He has also served for the past three years as the director's assistant for Dove's Church Planting and Leadership School. M. Joshua has become a great asset to Mirificam Press in the last year, participating in conversation and adding great insight. It's a privilege to have him as a friend and I thank him for taking the time to answer these questions. (finish reading on website)

As has become the recent ritual here on 5 for Friday, I'd like to start by thanking Molly E. Holzschlag, the most recent interviewee in the Mirificam Press interview series. I have just a few more interviews to go and I have to admit, I'm nowhere near the place I'd like to be on the development of the video series. I had to scrap my first attempt, but I think all the work and frustration will be well worth it in the end. Now, here's this week's 5 for Friday. (finish reading on website)

Brooke Condolora is the the third designer to be featured in the Mirificam Press interview series. She and her husband, David, are partners in the California based creative agency The Bloc Creative. She earned her bachelor's degree in Electronic Media Production from Harding University. And, although she has a wide range of creative talents, Brooke has specialized in graphic design and web design.

In her short time as a professional designer, Brooke has built an impressive list of clients and projects and I'm sure we will hear more from The Bloc Creative as they build their business. It's my privilege to introduce Brooke Condolora to the Mirificam Press audience and I'd like to thank her for taking the time to answer these questions. (finish reading on website)

Jeff is a designer for Blue Flavor, a standards conscious design agency in Seattle, Washington. He recently co-authored two web design books, Pro CSS Techniques, and Web Standards Creativity published in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Jeff is also a frequent speaking guest at conferences and blogs on jeffcroft.com whenever he gets a chance.

Jeff has been designing web sites since 1994, and after working for two universities as well as The Lawrence Journal-World newspaper in Lawrence, Kansas, he found a place at Blue Flavor. Currently Jeff holds the official title of "designer" but wears many hats at Blue Flavor. On his site, jeffcroft.com, he says, "Blue Flavor feels like something of a 'destination job,' and it's hard to imagine myself anywhere else anytime soon."

Jeff is the second designer featured in the Mirificam Press interview series and I'd like to thank him for taking the time to answer these questions. (finish reading on website)

Thank you to all the designers who have taken the time to participate. It's been great fun reading all of your answers.
It's an honor to have A-list designer and illustrator Veerle Pieters here on Mirificam Press as the first featured designer in this interview series. As a long time reader of Veerle's Blog I was especially excited when she responded to my request for an interview.

Veerle is a graphic/web designer living in Belgium. She is the author of the immensely popular Veerle's Blog and founder of the creative agency Duoh! Veerle started her career as a graphic designer in 1992, designing mostly for printed media and has since made the transition to focus on web design and digital media. In recent years she has been working for the Library of Congress on a project called The Learning Page. If you've never been to her site, I recommend browsing through the archives. Her Adobe Illustrator tutorials are legendary. (finish reading on website)

I'm excited about unveiling the first in the Mirificam Press interview series next week. I've gotten some great responses from a group of designers with a wide range of skill sets, popularity, and life philosophy. This series is also affording me the opportunity to focus my attention on a potential Mirificam Press video series to be released later this year. I'd like to thank designer and Mirificam Press reader Tanya Nichols for inspiring me to pursue this. More details coming soon. Now, here's this week's 5 for Friday. (finish reading on website)

As most of my long time readers know, I talk a lot about how worldview affects design philosophy. I've enjoyed the privilege of writing and discussing design in a deep vein, deeper than most designers ever stop to consider. I owe a great deal to the designers—both Christian and non-Christian—who have commented, emailed, friended, and followed me over the last year and a half. So I thought it would be appropriate to run a new series on Mirificam Press featuring designers and their philosophies—philosophies of life and philosophies of design.
I posted an article this week about what I believe and why. And even though it's one of the shortest articles I've written in awhile, it took quite a bit of searching and thinking. I'm glad that I'm constantly being challenged by readers and friends to examine my thoughts and motivations. So I'd like to preface this week's 5 for Friday by thanking all of you who have read and participated here on Mirificam Press during its first year of existence. Now, here's the links.
"Tell me in detail what you believe and why." This is the request I received from an old high school friend a few weeks ago on Facebook and I have to admit it locked me up. After looking over my profile, this friend expressed surprise that I was attending a liturgical church. We went back and forth a little and finally she asked me if I would please explain in detail what I believe and why. "Oh, that's easy." I thought, and I started typing out my response. After all, I write a blog about worldview. Every week I go to great lengths researching topics, searching for truth, examining historical Christian positions on a myriad of topics. This will be a breeze. But instead of the free-flowing response I expected, I found myself in an intellectual stutter. I typed and retyped the first sentence several times and eventually found myself at a total standstill. Finally I responded, "Let me think about it and I'll get back with you." (finish reading on website)

Grunge Design: Why It's Cool to be Broken and Disheveled

In a recent 5 for Friday post I received a question from Hungarian designer Steve Herrmann:

"Why is the visual appearance of NetGen broken and disheveled? Look at their page layout, their typography, images, clothing, mismatched styles, hairstyles,...Why?"

In the past I've analyzed the worldview behind various design movements, but I've tried to stick to the ones that were very apparently berthed from a particular philosophy. It is easy, for example, to look at the fathers of the De Sijl movement and quickly deduce the connection between their philosophy and its practical outworking. But dissecting modern design trends is much more complicated. An oil-and-water-like mixture of postmodernism and pragmatism has made a tangled mess of the philosophical waters. In order to accomplish the task, we'll have to take look back at one of the cognates of postmodernism, twentieth century existentialism. But first I'm going to clear up some common oversimplifications Christians are often guilty of concerning grunge styles. (finish reading on website)

The big news this week is that the W3C has released a beta version of a much needed and long anticipated website redesign. I've included a link to the new design as one of my 5 for Friday links. Also, I'm working on a series of articles featuring interviews with influential web designers concerning design philosophy and worldview. I'm excited about getting the interviews up on the site but, in reality, it will be at least a few more weeks before they are ready. Here's this week's 5 for Friday. (finish reading on website)

We spend a good chunk of time in each new project developing layout mockups and converting them to solid web templates (or at least I do), and rightly so. We want our templates to look sharp and function well. But there's a temptation, once the sharp-looking template is set up, to get sloppy and bland with the content. It's easy to fall into this trap because the template can usually provide enough flare to get us by. That won't cut it on sites that are content intensive or require high design. But by making a habit of "pre-styling" a short list of HTML elements, you can make sure that the content on all your sites is easy to read and looks professional. In this article we'll take a look at these elements along with some effective styles that will add flare and clarity to your content. (finish reading on website)

SXSWi 2009 is now fading into history as I posted my last panel review this week. I'm excited about the things going on in the web design industry and I'm optimistic about our future (all economic downturns aside). It looks like the demand for good design will weather the storm and come out stronger on the other side. Now, I'll leave you with this week's 5 for Friday. (finish reading on website)

The recent explosion of the virtual goods market has changed the way the world thinks about economic value and has pushed our culture one step closer to a sci-fi existence unimaginable to previous generations. At first, virtual goods seemed like a mere sub-feature in a social internet sphere that has existed in some form since the computer network was first conceived. But as virtual goods grew into a multi-billion dollar industry in just a few years, it was clear that their real significance had been underestimated. This SXSWi panel featuring Susan Wu (pictured right) as moderator took a look at the current state of the virtual goods market and discussed strategies for implementing virtual goods in various types of social networks. I'm going to give a brief overview of the three social networks represented on the panel and then take a few paragraphs to analyze the virtual gifts phenomenon from a Christian worldview.
The SXSWi panel "Not the Same Old Story" was a look at how design is used to enhance story-telling and more specifically how web design is lacking in this area. With Jason Santa Maria (formerly of Happy Cog) as the moderator, I knew it would be a panel worth checking out. The other panelists included Ian Aldeman (New York Magazine), Daniel Burka (Digg), Nicholas Feltron (Feltron.com), and Liz Danzico: an all-star cast for sure. Also, speaking of all-stars, Jeffrey Zeldman was sitting in the front row just a few yards away from me. (finish reading on website)

SXSWi 2009 is over now. As always, the conference was inspiring and overwhelming. In comparing 2009 to previous years at SWSWi there has been a noticeable shift in the overall emphasis of the panels from practical web design topics to discussions centered around social interaction, internet culture, and philosophy. We may be entering the time when the web design industry really starts to define itself from foundational philosophical and worldview standpoint. I will be posting two more articles dissecting SXSWi panels over the next two week. Here's this week's 5 for Friday. (finish reading on website)

SXSWi 2009: Tony Hsieh Opening Remarks

Tony Hsieh, co-founder of Link Exchange and current CEO of Zappos.com, kicked off SXSWi with the opening remarks on Saturday March 14th. In fitting SXSW style and spirit he conveyed the story of his .com success which has touched two decades (a rare winning streak in internet entrepreneurship) and shows promising signs of continuing into a third. I say his presentation was in fitting SXSW spirit because of predictable worldview claims and a smattering of hip socio-techno phrases and themes. Unconventional hiring and firing methods, "company culture", "create fun and a little weirdness", and "the science of happiness" are just few in a long list. But I'm getting ahead of myself. There was much in Tony's presentation that the Christian worldview would find agreeable and may even fit more neatly than many of the methods of so-called "Christian businessmen". I'm going to discuss the shiny side of the coin first and then briefly explore the implications of the deeper philosophy being promoting by Tony and other "happiness experts". I apologize to all you who were expecting 5 for Friday earlier. Austin traffic can really slow a schedule down. I'm sitting at the Day Stage at the Austin Convention Center typing this out and getting ready for another great conference for 2009. Here's this week's 5 for Friday. (finish reading on website)

In recent years liturgy has become one of the primary battlegrounds of theology and philosophy.
In the first three parts of this series, I explained the core concepts of web design. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on the way you look at it), being a well rounded web designer requires more than just understanding the core concepts. There's server-side scripting, client-side scripting, animation, e-commerce, and a whole slew of additional technologies for the web designer to learn. In the title of this article I call these technologies peripherals, and I think that word is appropriate. They're not unlike the peripherals of a computer system: the printer, scanner, external hard drive, etc. Technically, you may be able to build a website without them, but you will be severely limited in the type of website you will be able to build. In this article, I will be giving a brief overview of each of the most important peripheral tools in the web designer's arsenal. (finish reading on website)
