Andrew Warhola (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987), known as Andy Warhol, was an American painter, printmaker, and filmmaker who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became famous worldwide for his work as a painter, avant-garde filmmaker, record producer, author, and member of highly diverse social circles that included Bohemian street people, distinguished intellectuals, Hollywood celebrities and wealthy patrons.

One of the strangest facts about him involves Warhol’s time capsules, archived at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. They contain 610 cardboard boxes, 40 filing cabinets and one large trunk in which Warhol stored materials of daily life.

Fun fact:
The morning of July 18 in Stockholm, Sweden, a major theft occurred. Unknown perpetrator broke the door to the Abergs Museum, stormed inside and stripped from the walls of famous works of masters of the pop art of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. The robbers also took a poster of the old film “The New Spirit”, probably thinking that this is also Warhol’s work.

The highest price ever paid for a Warhol painting is US$100 million for a 1963 canvas titled Eight Elvises. The private transaction was reported in a 2009 article in The Economist, which described Warhol as the “bellwether of the art market.” $100 million is a benchmark price that only Jackson Pollock, Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Pierre-August Renoir, Gustav Klimt and Willem de Kooning have achieved.

Sandy Skoglund is one of a kind artist who has truly brought something new to the art industry for the past two decades. What you see in her photographs is not computer generated but was rather built over a long period of time just for one single shot.

Sandy knows no boundaries for her sets and uses pretty much anything to build them, even Cheetos. The artworks you see below are both new and old, some are so old that they were created sometime in the 1980′s.

Skoglund studied studio art and art history at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts from 1964-68. She went on to graduate school at the University of Iowa in 1969 where she studied filmmaking, intaglio printmaking, and multimedia art, receiving her M.A. in 1971 and her M.F.A. in painting in 1972.

Evil Fire Text Effect – Photoshop CS5 Tutorial

Hi everybody, in this tutorial I am going to show you how to create one great looking fire text effect in Photoshop CS5.

It can be done in older versions of the program too, I am just using the CS5 version in the creation of this tutorial.

You will need to download one texture before we start with the tutorial itself. We will use it as a custom pattern. I’m going to show you how we are going to do this. Or if you want check first this quick tutorial – How to Create Custom Pattern in Photoshop.

But first let’s see what we are going to do…

If you follow the tutorial correctly, your final result will look exactly like this.

First download the texture from the link below.

Create new file with 560×300 dimensions and fill it with black. Now right click on the background layer in the layers tab and choose “Layer from background…”. Name that layer “Background”.

Now open the “fire_texture_bizarotrips.png” in Photoshop and go to Edit > Define Pattern and choose a name for this new pattern. Now go back to our new file and open the Backround’s layer blending options. Go to Pattern Overlay and select our newly saved pattern. Apply these settings:

Now your background will look like this:

Now lets create our text. Select the type tool from the tool bar and type in your text. Name this layer Text1. In this tutorial I’m using Blackletter font with 150 size. You can download the font below.

Now set the text layer’s fill opacity to 0%. Open the layer’s options window and change the settings like I’ll show you below.

Let’s start with the Shadow.

Now add the Outer and Inner Glow.

Add the Bevel and Emboss effect.

Click on the Texture tab ad choose our fire texture with the following options:

Now add Sating and Stroke.

Now your text have to look something like this:

Now duplicate this text layer and name the new one Text2. Text2 layer must be above Text1. Select Text2 layer and change all of its options like shown below:

The gradient have to look something like this:

Now we will use again our fire texture with the following options:

Now or Fire Text Effect will look something like this:

For a final touch, let’s duplicate the Text2 layer, name it Flames. Be sure that this layer is on top of all other layers. Right click on it and choose Remove Layer Style. Set the layer’s Fill opacity to 0%.

Now apply these settings for the layer’s options:

Click on the Texture tab ad choose our fire texture with the following options:

Now right click on the layer in the layers tab and choose Convert to Smart Object. Now change the layer’s blending option to Overlay.

This is how our fire text effect will to look in the end if you have followed the tutorial correctly.

Custom CSS in WordPress post using a custom field

For custom CSS within a WordPress post, the best place to put the code is right into the HTML head of that post. This is very easy to do with WordPress custom fields and a slight modification of your WordPress theme.

What are custom fields?

If you don’t know what custom fields are in WordPress then step aboard, they are another powerful tool to add to your arsenal and easy to understand. The first step is making sure they are displayed on your Edit Post admin page. Create a new post and look to the top right corner of you admin interface. You should see Screen Options. Click it and then make sure Custom Fields is ticked in the Show on screencheck box options. Now if you look below your post you should see a panel called Custom Fields.

A quick update to your theme

Either download your header.php file or use the WordPress editor to paste the snippet of code below into it. The snippet below should go right before your closing tag.

This example allows you to post any type of data into your page head and allows you to specify the type of tag such as link style or script. The code above says: is this a single page? If so get the custom field named custom_header and echo/print it out. Now you are done and can save/upload the file to your server.

Now in your custom fields panel enter a new custom field of custom_header and add the styles or JavaScript you need. In the example below you would then add .myCustomStyle to your post in the HTML tab. I find using span tags in the editor is the best way to add custom classes.

You can add any kind of custom code into the header using the same method. Read more aboutcustom fields in the WordPress codex.

My custom CSS isn’t showing up

If your CSS classes seem to be having no affect it’s probably because they are being overridden by your own theme CSS. Adding the !important declaration to any problem styles will fix this issue forcing them to override the style that is overriding your custom style, see the example below.

Here I have collected one big list of online tools that can help you improve your website or blog. Most of them are my own favorites and I use them very often. Check them out and I’m sure that you will find something useful for your own web projects.

Of course all these tools, websites and generators are free to use.

I have separated the links in categories to be more easy for you to find the best tools that suits your needs.

Design & Color

BrowserShots – this online tool makes screenshots of your site trough the “eyes” of different browsers. You can select 80+ browser/OS combinations, which is great for testing your website’s compatibility.

Color Palette Generator- here you can enter any image’s URL and this tool will generate a matching color palette. It’s very useful if you want to create a web design around some key image.

Color Scheme Designer – this application will generate several types of color schemes based on one chosen color. It uses authentic algorithm and the final results are really impressive.

Genfavicon – online tool for creating favicon files for your sites and blogs. A favicon (short for ‘favorites icon’), are litle icons associated with a particular website or webpage, shown next to the site’s name in the URL bar of most browsers.

Font Browser – with this online tool you will be able to preview all fonts that are installed on your system.

Font Tester – this is a free online font comparison tool. It allows you to easily preview and compare different fonts side by side with various CSS font styles applied to them. Very useful for developers that are looking for the right font.

Screen Size Tester – here you can check how your site looks in different screen sizes.

Hosting, Domainname, DNS

MyIPneighbors – if you use shred hosting for your website or blog, with this tool you can see what other sites are hosted on the same IP address.

WhoIsHostingThis – with this free online tool you can check every website’s hosting. You just enter the desired website’s address, press “search” and you’ll get link to the company that is hosting the site.

WhoIsTheOwner – Simply type in any domain name and you’ll get all the available informations (name, address, phone, …) about its owner.

You Get Signal – this is collection of some very useful network tools which you may find handy. Some of the tools are “Network Location Tool”, “Phone Number Geo locator”, “Reverse IP Domain Check”, WHOIS Look up Tool” and others.

Orangoo Spell Check – This spell check lets you spell check your entire website for spelling mistakes. Fast and Accurate Results. No Software Required. Absolutely free.

Spellery – Spellery the website spell checker is a fast and cute tool, really nifty to have in hand. Just submit your URL in the search field and press Spell Check and Spellery does the checking for you.

WorldLingo - this one good free online translation tool. If your blog is not in your native language this tool can help you to write grammatically accurate sentences.

Programming and Coding

Will the browser apply the rule(s)? – check which browsers support your site or blog CSS file.

CSS Optimiser – web tool for reducing the file size of cascading style sheets. In order to save more space optimized files would be messy even so you may output it as a file. Non-valid or hacked (for certain browsers) CSS files may result in error.

10 Free Alternatives of Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is widely known as the best photo manipulation and graphic editing tool available nowadays, but like every other professional software product it’s price is too high for most of the average users. Here I’ll show you some really good and free Photoshop alternatives to use in your graphic or web design projects.

I have used some of them myself in the past and I can say that they are very good for beginners and for people that create not so much complicated things. The different applications have their own pros and cons so you have to choose yourself which one suits your needs best.

Serif Photoplus

PhotoPlus SE allows you to alter and customize your photographs in an easy-to-use format for photo-editing beginners and advanced users alike.

When you install PhotoPlus SE, the program requires you to fill in a form in order to receive a free registration key. Once registered, you gain access to a myriad of basic photo-editing features, such as red-eye reduction and quick fixes such as adjustments to a photo’s brightness, contrast, and sharpness. There are also various effects in PhotoPlus SE you can play around with, like increasing blurriness, sharpening, and a distortion feature. In addition, users can work with layers to add more effects to their pictures.

Unfortunately, PhotoPlus SE’s most advanced and desirable features are restricted to the paid version of the program. This includes their various tutorials. PhotoPlus SE is consequently a good program for photo-editing beginners, but more advanced users may find the features a bit lacking as a result.

Overall, PhotoPlus SE is relatively easy to navigate and use, making it a good choice for novices or those wanting a good introduction to photo retouching and are searching for good free Photoshop alternative.

GIMP

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X. The GIMP software is may be the best free Photoshop alternative software available, so be sure to check it out. I’m sure you will not be disappointed.

GIMPshop is a modification of the free/open source GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), intended to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop. Its primary purpose is to make users of Photoshop feel comfortable using GIMP.

It shares all GIMP’s advantages, including the long feature list and customisability, while addressing some common criticisms regarding the program’s interface: GIMPshop modifies the menu structure to closely match Photoshop’s, adjusts the program’s terminology to match Adobe’s, and, in the Windows version, uses a plugin called ‘Deweirdifier’ to combine the application’s numerous windows in a similar manner to the MDI system used by most Windows graphics packages. While GIMPshop does not support Photoshop plugins, all GIMP’s own plugins, filters, brushes, etc.

Inkskape

Inkskape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format.

Inkscape supports many advanced SVG features (markers, clones, alpha blending, etc.) and great care is taken in designing a streamlined interface. It is very easy to edit nodes, perform complex path operations, trace bitmaps and much more. We also aim to maintain a thriving user and developer community by using open, community-oriented development.

Pixlr Editor

Pixlr combines image design and paint tools with photo editing and adjustment features more convincingly than any other online image editing program. Whether creating an image carte-blanche, layering one image over another or using a variety of filters, effects and level adjustments to transform photographs, Pixlr is equally capable of producing results on par with many of its software-based counterparts. Yet, despite its deep feature-set, Pixlr remains facile, intuitive and, most importantly, user-friendly.

Standout Features:

A fully customizable user interface with movable and scalable windows
Navigation-free drop-down menus featuring all filters, adjustment and layering options
Intuitive design and paint features with a dedicated history window for reference and quick undo/redo
A “Photo Express” portal for quick, simple changes to images and photographs

Krita from Koffice

Krita is a painting and image editing application for Koffice and is part of the KDE package. It has become very popular recently due to its ease of use and it is one good free Photoshop alternative. While it is not as feature-rich as the Photoshop, or even GIMP, it does contains the necessary tools to create/edit a professional image from scratch. In fact, the latest version contains some features that are not found in both GIMP and Photoshop.

Paint.NET

If all you want is a quick image retouch, Photoshop is overkill. Paint.NET, on the other hand, is an open-source freeware editor with all the essentials, including tools to crop, rotate, and resize images, adjust colors, and create collages. It supports common image formats–JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, and others–but not high-resolution RAW files. There are enough basic and intermediate effects and features to keep image-tweakers happy, including a red-eye removal tool that has seen dramatic improvements. Unlike most free image editors, Paint.NET supports layers, history, and has an actions manager. The pleasing interface boasts semitransparent windows for ease of use.

Version 3.5 addresses many performance quibbles and offers some interface tweaks for the Aero-theme users, but fans of the “dancing ants” may not like the gray-overlay changes made to the selection tools. The useful tools under Effects on the menu bar have seen many additions since version 3, including surface blurs, dents, and crystalize.

The new version automatically downloads and installs the program’s prerequisites, including the latest Microsoft .Net version and Windows Installer. It will update in the background now, too, so you can continue to use the program until it’s ready to restart. Longtime users should notice that the program starts up about 20 percent faster, according to the publisher. Regardless of minor problems, Paint.NET is far more advanced than Microsoft Paint, and given its free price, it’s a must-have for anyone needing to fix images. – from Cnet

Splashup

For its feature palette and toolset, Splashup is among the best online image editing programs available. But, for its high-bandwidth consumptive, Flash-heavy programming, it is among the worst. Nevertheless, despite its operational flaws, Splashup is a capable tool and an arguable replacement for equally stodgy software-based programs.

Splashup occupies a position center-right on the online image editing program bell-curve. Its prominent editing tools and features are progressive, advanced and are likely to remain capable for several years to come. Unfortunately, many of the backend site features, including help, support and even community and gallery functions have largely been forgotten. It is likely that, with a few key improvements to resources, technical support and the development of a community, gallery or photo printing service or affiliation, Splashup will be at the top of the online image editing program heap. – from TopTenReviews

Sumo Paint

Sumo Paint is an online, feature-rich, free paint tool and photo manipulation application. But Sumo Paint is not just a tool; it boasts an impressive online art community of over a 4 million unique users from 200 countries. The primary purpose of the community is “to create, share, remix, explore, comment, rate and fave the artwork of its members.”

If you cannot afford PhotoShop (or find it overwhelming) or some other high-end purchased application like Adobe Creative Suites, just try Sumo Paint. It is powerful, affordable (free), and easy to master and is one good free online Photoshop alternative.

Aviary

Aviary launched into public beta as A.viary.com in February 2008. The site emerged from beta as Aviary.com in November 2008. The site was the brainchild of Avi Muchnick, the creator of Worth1000.com, an online collaboration site for creative designers. The company is headquartered in Long Island, NY. Long-term plans include the addition of a font editor, audio and video editing tools. These applications will be released to premium members in beta form as they are developed.

Aviary has a very Web 2.0 look and feel. General navigation on the site is quite fast, but the applications can take as long as a minute to load over a broadband connection. Load times can be decreased using a Firefox extension that is available to premium members of the site. Navigation is obvious and intuitive, with a top menu bar containing sub-menus. The site is well organized and there is no advertising displayed on the site. The site maintains three different blogs – a Product blog, an Idea blog and a Microblog on Twitter.

Pixia

Pixia is a free image-editing and drawing program. It’s essentially the English language edition of a popular Japanese application. Like many such tools, it offers Photoshop-like capabilities such as layers, multiple undos, and plug-ins; it will even accept Photoshop’s plug-ins. The difference, of course, is that Pixia is free, something Photoshop certainly is not.
