Amsterdam tourist attractions and sights

Amsterdam has a broad spectrum of recreational and cultural sights that range from fascinating old buildings, like the Oude Kerk, to oddities such as the Hash Marihuana Museum.

Museums are the main tourist attraction in Amsterdam. Everyone knows the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum, but there is much, much more. Amsterdam has over fifty museums which attract many millions of visitors every year. Read more about the museums in Amsterdam. The following sites and monuments should also be of interest and are an essential part of the Amsterdam experience.

Oude Kerk This old church with little houses clinging to its sides, remains a calm heaven at the heart of the freneric Red Light District. Its buildings, especially the Gothic-renaissance style octagonal bell tower, was used by sailors to get their bearings.

Dam square

The Dam is the very centre and heart of Amsterdam, although there are arguably prettier sights in the city. As an historical site however, it is fascinating and worth taking the time to appreciate. The Dam has seen many historical dramas unfold over the years, and was for example, the reception area for Napoleon and his troops during the 1808 take-over of the city. The impressive history of the square is well documented in the Amsterdam Historical Museum. The Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis) which dominates the square, was originally used as the town hall and its classical facade and fine sculptures were intended to glorify the city of Amsterdam and its government. In contrast to its turbulent history, the square is now a peaceful place and is home to hundreds of pigeons and tourists resting their tired feet.

Begijnhof

A narrow, vaulted passageway leads to this charming garden surrounded by old houses. The houses in the courtyard were once occupied by devout celibate Béguine nuns and are still home to single women today. In the centre of the lawns is a medieval church and at No.34 stands the oldest house in Amsterdam. The entrance is on the Spui and is indicated by a carved sign. Entry is free, but you must be quiet!

Amsterdam’s canals The number of canals have led Amsterdam to become known as “The Venice of the North”. And thus, a trip to Amsterdam is not complete without a boat cruise. A canal tourcan be both fascinating and relaxing by day and enchanting and romantic at night when many of the houses and bridges are illuminated. The four main city center canals are Prinsengracht, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Singel. There are also numerous smaller canals in the neighbourhood of Jordaan, of which the Brouwersgracht, the Bloemgracht and the Leliegracht are especially pleasant.

Magere Brug Of Amsterdam’s 1280 or so bridges, the Magere Brug, or “ Skinny Bridge” is the most famous. It is a traditional double-leaf, Dutch draw-bridge connecting the banks of the river Amstel. Approximately every twenty minutes, the bridge opens to let boats through. The original bridge was built in 1670, but as the traffic on Amstel increased, a wider bridge was built to replace the narrow one.

Jordaan Once a working class area, Amsterdam’s Jordaan has become greatly sought after. The converted warehouses are especially popular, and the Jordaan is now inhabited by a colorful mixture of students, well-to-do businessmen and creative professionals. The Jordaan oozes atmosphere with its narrow streets, picturesque canals, brown cafes, art galleries and unique shops. You can easily lose yourself in a pleasant stroll in through the enchanting streets that connect the 3 main canals.

Rembrandtplein (square)

Rembrandtplein is lined with pubs, restaurants, cafes and hotels and is thus a tourist magnet. A popular centre for nightlife, it also includes traditional Dutch pubs which play real Dutch music. In summer, the terraces are packed with people enjoying a drink and watching the world go by. In the centre of the square is a small but pleasant park where you can relax or pay homage at the statue of Rembrandt. Around the area you’ll also find quality night clubs, gay venues, respectable diamond dealers and the inevitable tacky souvenir shops.

Leidseplein (square)

The Leidseplein or Leidse-square is one of Amsterdam’s most popular centres for nightlife. With many restaurants, clubs, coffeeshops, cinemas and theatres in the area, the Leidseplein is vibrant and colourful. On warm summer evenings, tourists and locals alike take advantage of the pubs’ outdoor seating for a long, lazy drinks with friends. Street musicians, jugglers, fire-eaters and other performers liven up the square, often till the early hours.

Red Light District

Beer and party atmosphere, sex for sale, and limitless people-watching. The stores are full of hardcore videos, magazines and sex toys. The Red Light District is somewhat of a sexual amusement park and often not taken too seriously by the hordes of tourist who frequent it. The famous red window lights are striking against the quaint, old canal houses and even the fairy lights that line the bridges at night are coloured red. Although it is generally considered to be a very safe area, care should still be taken when walking through the quieter streets of the area. There is a strict “no photography” policy.

Albert Cuyp market

The Albert Cuypmarkt is arguably the best-known and busiest outdoor market in Europe. It attracts thousands of visitors every day, and is especially popular on Saturdays. There are over 300 stalls and goods range from fresh produce, to clothes, to odds and ends, with prices among the cheapest in Amsterdam. The market is located in the Pijp district, surrounded by many pleasant cafes and small shops. There is another number of regular street markets in Amsterdam.

Artis ZOO

Right in the center of Amsterdam, you can also find the oldest Zoo of Holland. It consists of four main areas: Zoo, Planetarium, Botanical Gardens and Geological and Zoological museum. In the zoo itself you will find animals from all over the world. In addition, a unique canal aquarium shows you which animals roam the canals of Amsterdam. The planetarium offers children a trip trough the universe. In the peaceful gardens, you can find many old trees and statues of contemporary artists and aswell as an impressive, tropical rainforest greenhouse. The Geological museum shows you how the planet has evolved over the past 4 billion years.

Vondelpark

The Vondelpark is located in the south of Amsterdam, just five minutes walk from the Leidseplein and in walking distance from the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum and Van Gogh Museum. With 10 million visitors a year, the Vondelpark is the most famous park in the Netherlands.Hortus Botanicus – the Botanical Garden Amsterdam has a big and attractive botanical garden called Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest in the world (est. 1632). It has more than 6000 plants and some of the plants are really unique as 2000 years old agave cactus. In the recently renovated Orangery of Hortus Botanicus, a beautiful café with a large outside terrace open to the garden welcomes the visitors. Located in a short walking distance from the Rembrandts House, very close to Artis – Amsterdam ZOO, the Jewish Historical Museum and the Resistance Museum, Hortus Botanicus remains a pleasurable oasis of peace in the busy and crowded Amsterdam centre.

Squares in Amsterdam The city squares symbolize the whole areas of the city with their activity and the character. Big and open Dam square with the Palace of the Queen and the best department store has a central role in town; Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein are entertainment and tourism centers while the Museumplein name speaks for itself. Nieuwmarkt, Westermarkt and Noordermarkt are old markets, which found today a new function, each of them different. Even a small square called het Spui has its own special character, making it a real fun to visit.

Amsterdam parks Amsterdam has a number of beautiful, quiet parks where you can relax during the busy day in town. The largest of them – Vondelpark is located in the very centre of the city. Other parks as Beatrixpark, Frankendael, Sarphatipark, Amstelpark, Westerpark are quiet, well-maintained community parks. An artificial forest just South of Amsterdam – Amsterdamse Bos is today a big nature reserve, with many attractions.

Amsterdam windmills A trip to Holland just wouldn’t be complete without a visit to a windmill. Believe it or not, there are 8 stunning windmills in at the heart of the city just waiting to admired. Don’t forget to take your camera.

Landmark hotels of Amsterdam

Finally, Amsterdam has a number of the landmarks hotels, which stand out above the hundreds of buildings in the town. Among the there are the old and dignified historic hotels as Hotel Krasnapolsky and Amstel Hotel, and the modern, international hotels as Amsterdam Hilton and Okura Amsterdam, along with several other excellent, five-star hotels.

While staying at the Shangri-la Hotel in Dubai, I was pleasantly

surprised to see the worlds tallest tower directly in front my suite.

It is as magnificent as anyone can imagine and makes Dubai a

must visit business destination. The entire city has a vibe that I

have not experienced before. It is a calm yet busy city, with

breathtaking architecture (an architects dream) and smooth flowing

roadways.

You feel transformed into the future.

Despite current financial difficulties this city will flourish and should

be a model city for the future.

Conducting business in Dubai is professional and interaction is extremely

calm, and courtious. Services are top notch and everyone aims to please.

It has a multi-cultural feel and makes you feel at home even upon arrival.

Dubai promotes itself as the city of the future, striving to offer everything

in one place. Things that other cities cannot offer – and at the same time

everything that is builds needs to be the best, the biggest, the shiniest,

the most expensive, and the first-of-its-kind.

This city now boasts the world’s tallest tower: the BURJ DUBAI

(burj is the Arabic word for tower).

Artists concept

Burj Dubai has now hit its maximum height at

818 m (2,684 ft)( spire is completed)& is set

for September 2009 “soft” opening.

I loved my stay in Dubai and so should you!

There is a new concept emerging and gaining acceptance in today’s marketplace that offers the best of both worlds – the Virtual Office.

Profitability, scalability, efficiency. These are key words every business owner must embrace. In today’s market, as independent business owners transform the marketplace with their ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit, such applied concepts are increasingly important. No longer do the mega companies dominate the market with their huge campuses, massive pools of employees or complicated processes. Today’s businesses must be agile, adaptable and increasingly savvy.

On the same front, today’s workers must be flexible, creative and dynamic in their workplace to keep up with the demands of the changing times. Yet, with the rise of gas prices and the shifting emphasis to achieving quality of life, you’ll find workers today are looking diligently for improved models of relationship with their employers. They want freedom and stability in one package.

The Best of Both Worlds

There is a new concept emerging and gaining acceptance in today’s marketplace that offers the best of both worlds – the Virtual Office. In particular, through the recruiting and coordination of a large pool of skilled, dedicated Virtual Assistants, hiring a Virtual Assistant firm makes business success possible by eliminating overhead, centralizing customer service and maximizing potential.

It Pays To Evolve

Virtual Assistant firms know that time is money, and the more you can leverage time, the better guarantee of success. A business offering such as theirs, gives the business owner an opportunity to capitalize on the Information Age. What are some of the cost benefits of establishing a Virtual Office?

No Overhead
When a business operates virtually, a business owner avoids the costs associated with leasing space to house employees, paying high rates for employee benefits, establishing a complex HR department, and even investing in equipment and supplies. More so, by working with a Virtual Assistant, the talent you work with are independent contractors, meaning your tax requirements fall on their shoulders, not your business. These savings multiply the more your business grows.

No Lengthy Hiring Process

By utilizing a Virtual Assistant firm, the hiring process goes from cumbersome to easy, offering access to thousands of skilled professionals in as little as one week. The savings are thousands of dollars for every time you need to hire someone. Furthermore, this company becomes an intermediary for the management and growth of its skilled professionals, offering a business security, exceptional service, and quality.

No Risk

With access to thousands of carefully screened and skilled professionals, a business truly gets what it pays for. What once was a permanent risk in hiring someone suitable to helping a business grow and profit, is now a pool of choices for finding and keeping the right talent – without the fear of making a mistake.

More Time and Flexibility

Seeing that a business owner plays the role of employer and employee, their time is valuable in the sense of not only creating a quality life, but also in maximizing the use of their talents and skills. The benefit of a utilizing a Virtual Assistant firm is clear when a business can focus itself on its strengths and lean on others to complete the tasks less likely to bring them direct gain.

The Life You Create

Why move from brick and mortar to the virtual office? Because the cost savings inherent in such an approach will ensure that your time is spent doing what you do best. Making success more than just the money you make, but also the life you create.

Tuesday night’s free Rocksteady blowout show – the Jazz Fest’s third huge free show so far this summer – was, without a doubt, the concert of the year, and has forced its way into the top Montreal International Jazz Festival concerts of all time.

Sharing the stage tonight were some of Rocksteady’s most towering stars: Stranger Cole, Ken Boothe, Leroy Sibbles, Hopeton Lewis, and former members of the I-Threes Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt. The music – a transitional genre between Jamaican ska and reggae – was joyful and familiar as the night’s guest singers rejoiced at being reunited once again.

Accompanied by a flawless band – including a rhythm section, 3-part horn section, backup vocalists the Tamlins and percussionist “Bongo” Herman Davis – the performers sang a veritable greatest hits of Rocksteady, from Take it Easy to Stop That Train and everything in between. Griffiths and Mowatt – as Bob Marley band alumni – even sang a brief one-two punch homage to the reggae king with back-to-back performances of No Woman No Cry and Could You Be Loved.

Keeping with the family spirit of the night, the VIP singers were humble enough to yield their spotlight to the backing band, who performed a mesmerizing dub instrumental by reggae guitarist Lynn Taitt, as well as a short run of songs with lead vocals by percussionist Davis and sensational singers the Tamlins.

The music was tremendous, the crowd colossal, and the vibe one of love and friendship.

But above all, the night proved to be more than a performance: rather, it was a celebration of Jamaica, of this wonderful genre, and of the special festival that brought it to this great city.

The Society of Incentive and Travel Executives (SITE) said Dubai is one of the most popular destinations in the world for companies organising overseas meetings and incentive travel.

Endorsements by international organisations add enormous significance to the forthcoming 8th Global Travel and Tourism Summit to be held by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAEand Ruler of Dubai, from 20-22 April at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai.

The summit is a stage for businessmen from around the world to discuss latest trends in travel and tourism.

The choice of Dubai for the summit affirms major strides the emirate has taken in travel and tourism, endorsing the vision and policy of the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015.

Many Fortune 500 firms have made Dubai their base due to its excellent infrastructure and business environment.

Dubai’s leadership is further augmenting the emirate’s status as a major regional business core.

Hundreds of thousands of business visitors and exhibitors increase the demand for accommodations, restaurant services, as well as transportation and other related conveniences’.

Today, meetings, conferences and exhibitions have become a key component of the Dubai’s business and tourism expansion.

Dubai hosts over 100 major international exhibitions making it the leading destination for conferences, and events.

Stress is an integral part of our world. There are techniques to handle stress in our lives, but it’s difficult to find time to meditate for hours. This technique will teach you how to meditate in just five minutes to feel better for the remainder of the day.

Look For A Quiet Place

You can find a quiet place anywhere you are. The bathroom is the best place. Go into a stall and shut the door behind you. The world can wait five minutes for you.

Tune In Tune Out

People will be coming in and out of your quiet place. You may hear toilets flushing and people talking. You need to tune out these distractions and go deep inside your head. There is nothing going on out there that you need to worry about at this moment. The world goes on with or without you.

Play a song in your head. If you have an iPod or iPhone, put in your earphones and listen to relaxing music. Do what it takes to filter out distractions. This is your time, let nothing distract you.

Get Cosy

You don’t have to sit down to meditate. If you’re in a bathroom or somewhere you don’t feel comfortable sitting down, find a comfortable place to stand. Drop your shoulders. Roll your head around to loosen your neck muscles. Drop your arms to your sides.

If you are standing, don’t lock your knees. This prevents blood flow to your brain. Some people have been known to pass out. Bend your knees slightly until your body feels comfortable.

Close your eyes. Relax your facial muscles. Be aware of any tension you may have in your body, your face, your neck, your stomach, or your shoulders. Release the tension. Relax every muscle.

Focus Focus Focus

This is the healing part of meditating. Focus your closed eyes on a spot between your eyes above your eyebrows. This is called the third eye. Sometimes you can see a small spot behind your eyes. Focus your vision and you will be able to focus your thoughts.

Take in a slow, deep breath. Imagine breathing in all the positive energy around. Think relaxing, positive thoughts. Breathe in strength, power, energy and life. Your body is renewed with essential oxygen and nutrients. Feel the power of your breath in every part of your body, from your head to the tips of your toes.

Slowly let out your breath. Imagine you are letting out the tension and stress in your body. The negative energy is now released. Anger and frustration is floating away. It’s draining from your body, and you feel your body relax.

Notice your body with just one complete breath cycle. Keep focusing on your third eye, and repeat the breath cycle five to 25 times. Stay focused. Don’t think of anything except the positive energy flowing in and the negative energy flowing out.

After five minutes, slowly open your eyes. Notice that the world looks calmer, peaceful, and your body will move a little slower as you get back to work. This feeling will stay with you for the rest of the day. It’s that simple.

What Is Jet Lag

Jet lag refers to a combination of symptoms that occur as the result of travel through three or more time
zones. Everyone has an internal clock that is set to correspond with the external changes experienced in a
24-hour period; primarily relating to the day/night cycle. Traveling through several time zones can disrupt
the body’s internal clock; your body may think it’s time to sleep even though it may be the start of a new
day.

Symptoms of Jet Lag

Jet lag can affect different people in different ways. Some people have little problems with jet lag and can
recover rapidly while others find jet lag to be very disruptive. Typical symptoms of jet lag include daytime
sleepiness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, headache, irritability, gastric discomfort, and trouble initiating
and maintaining sleep.

Factors Contributing to Jet Lag
There are factors associated with travel that can contribute to jet lag. Traveling can be a stressful and
tiring activity, causing fatigue by the time you reach your destination. Just being in a new environment can
produce a feeling of disorientation. Many people find it difficult to sleep in a strange bed, and it may take a
day or two to feel rested. The direction of travel can also influence the amount of jet lag experienced. Jet
lag is more severe when traveling east than when flying west. It’s easier for your body to extend the day
rather than shorten it. Jet lag can last for several days.

TIPS FOR AVOIDING JET LAG
• Decide whether to stay on your “home time” or adjust to your new environment.
• If possible arrive at your destination in the early evening (local time).
• Anticipate your new time zone. Sleep on the plane if arrival is in the morning and stay awake if
arriving in the evening.
• Get plenty of sleep before you travel. Being rested will make the adjustment to a new time zone
easier.
• If possible, start adjusting sleeping and waking times to your new time zone days before leaving on
your trip. For example, if travelling west, try going to bed and getting up an hour later each day
for three days before leaving. If flying east, reverse the process.
• Prevent dehydration during the flight by drinking plenty of water. Dehydration contributes to
fatigue.
• Avoid alcohol and caffeine during the flight.
• Exercise during the flight by stretching and walking.
• Eat several small, light meals throughout the days before, during, and just following your flight.
• Avoid using sleeping pills. They can cause a hang-over effect.
• If a nap is needed, keep it short (10 to 30 minutes) and nap only in the middle of the afternoon
(local time), once you arrive at your destination.
