Problems preventing academic reforms

Academic excellence has always been the dream of every UP official and faculty member. Effort has been directed to improve teaching and research as far back as many alumni can recall. Programs include curriculum revision, institution or abolition of academic degrees, providing incentives through honorariums and chairs, policy reform, opening of campuses throughout the country, and giving equal opportunities for admission of students from all sectors of society.
Updated: 2009-06-22 19:57:58

Doing research for development

Development depends on the quality of the research output, which in turn relies on correct research practice. Two ways to improve research: (a) by leaving to scientists the job of performance evaluation or (b) by using the established and objective indicators (e.g., journals and publication citations in Science Citation Index or Social Sciences Citation Index).
Updated: 2009-06-04 19:38:26

Happy birthday Darwin: lamentations on science and religion

Darwin gave us a scientific paradigm by which we can understand the origins of the biodiversity that sustains our own species. Filipinos live in a country known throughout the world as a center of biodiversity - the product of millions of years of evolution. Sadly, the Philippines is also known worldwide as an ecological disaster.
Updated: 2009-04-23 19:23:02

Prevalence of monodon baculovirus in wild shrimp Penaeus monodon in the Phils

Viral diseases are considered as a major problem in shrimp aquaculture industry in the Philippines and have caused severe losses to the shrimp farmers. Among the economically important shrimp viral pathogens is monodon baculovirus (MBV). MBV should be eliminated in the culture system because its infection can slow the growth, especially in intensive culture systems thereby decreasing productivity.
Updated: 2009-02-27 21:01:19

Diagnosis of blistering diseases of the skin and other dermatologic conditions

Immunofluorescence techniques and other immunopathologic diagnostic techniques in dermatology involve the detection and localization of specific autoantibodies against various antigens within the skin. Since the 1960s when the lupus band test was utilized to diagnose lupus erythematosus, diagnostic immunopathologic techniques, when interpreted alongside clinical and histopathologic findings, have become a part of the diagnostic criteria in the diagnosis of many skin diseases.
Updated: 2009-02-02 21:20:10

Single laser for manipulation and microsurgery of cells

A collaborative research venture between the Philippines and Japan has shown that a single laser can be used to manipulate and perform microsurgery on cells. They manipulate cells using the principle of optical trapping where gradient forces of light attracts the cells towards the focus.
Updated: 2008-11-22 19:09:48

Realities in RP science

During my recent Balik Scientist visit to the Philippines, a very dear scientist friend said she had gotten tired of reading articles such as this because, after issues have been debated and so many words exchanged, nothing ever changes. But even Marx, who pointed out the need to change the world, analyzed it first.
Updated: 2008-11-13 22:56:21

Myths in RP science

Much has already been written concerning the low productivity of the Philippine scientific community. A quantitative measure of this, for example, the number of papers published in journals indexed by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI), reveals that the Philippines has already been overtaken by Indonesia and Vietnam.
Updated: 2008-11-13 22:55:08
