Did you know there are several meanings for the English phrasal verb "stand up"?

1) to lift oneself to a standing position
Example: You have to stand up when the bride walks down the aisle to honor her.

2) to support something
Example: Jose says he will stand up for his country during times of war.

3) to not follow through with a plan to meet someone
Example: I had a date with Dave but he stood me up and never came.

English Tip for Spanish Speakers

In English, the verb "agree" can often cause a little confusion for Spanish speakers. I have heard native Spanish speakers say in English "I am agree" since they say "Estoy de acuerdo".

This is a pretty common mistake, although in English this is not the way we say it.

When we use the verb "agree", we say:

I agree.
You agree.
He/she/it agrees.
They agree.
We agree.

1) "Needless to say" meaning: obvious
