During periods of enslavement and Jim Crow segregation, Black folks were systematically stripped of their material wealth. They were also often denied their dignity. We are talking about people who had to break into a space that was never exactly welcoming in the first place.

Charlie Sifford

Charlie Sifford has to be near the top of any list like this because he is the trailblazer. After a year of being excluded, he became the first Black golfer to compete on the PGA Tour, then went on to win twice on Tour and later became the first Black golfer inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. More than anything, Sifford belongs here because a lot of the names that came after him only got a real shot because he forced golf to deal with its own hypocrisy.

Here’s a question all Americans need to be asking themselves right now: How bad does a U.S. president have to be for the president of Iran to be the leader standing on the moral high ground?

On Wednesday night, President Donald Trump delivered a speech that was supposed to serve as an “important update” on his completely unprovoked war of choice in Iran. The speech provided no such update. Instead, those who tuned in got to listen to the president shower himself with undeserved praise, claim victories that, clearly, no one can see but him, and generally repeat the same self-contradicting nonsense he’d been saying about the conflict in the weeks leading up to his utterly useless address.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has shared some of his own thoughts on the conflict, and asked some questions of his own to the U.S. populace, specifically: Is the president really putting “America first”?

“Exactly which of the American people’s interests are truly being served by this war?” Masoud Pezeshkian wrote in the letter, addressed “to the people of the United States of America” and posted on X hours before Trump gave his speech.

“Is ‘America First’ truly among the priorities of the US government today?” he continued.

Pezeshkian noted in his letter that Iran has “never, in its modern history, chosen the path of aggression, expansion, colonialism, or domination, and never initiated any war” and that the perception of his country being a threat is “the product of political and economic whims of the powerful.”

He asserted Tehran’s actions – which have included daily drone and missile strikes that have hit civilian and military infrastructure across the Gulf – have been “legitimate self-defense.”

It was not clear whether other elements of Iran’s leadership were involved in drafting the letter. The highest authority in the Islamic Republic, supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei, has not been seen or heard in public since the US and Israel launched their war on Iran more than a month ago.

Pezeshkian went on to imply a distinction between the US government and its people, saying his country has been misunderstood and that “Iranian people harbour no enmity towards other nations, including the people of America, Europe, or neighboring countries.”

“This is a deeply rooted principle in Iranian culture and collective consciousness–not a temporary political stance,” he said.

Let’s be clear about one thing: Iran certainly has a deep history, including a recent history, of oppression and human rights abuses against women, protesters, and innocent bystanders. Still, in this instance — with our current president being the corrupt, authoritarian, Constitution-defying wannabe dictator that he is — much of the world, including most of the U.S., is looking at Iran like it’s a victim fending off a bully.

To be fair, what recent polls have also indicated is that most U.S. citizens just want the war to end, whether Iran gives in to U.S. demands or not — and, so far, it has not.

Unfortunately, Trump’s speech Wednesday night gave no clear timeline for when the war might end; just vague promises that the operation will be completed “very shortly,” in “the next two to three weeks,” whenever the Strait of Hormuz is reopened, or some other time.

It’s exhausting. We’re all exhausted. And that exhaustion will continue as long as our current so-called leader remains in office, regardless of how things shake out in Iran.

Last week, it looked like the monthlong shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was set to end after the Senate passed a spending bill that funded every agency within the department except ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). 

House Republicans rejected that bill and instead passed one that fully funds DHS, which everyone knew would be a non-starter for Senate Democrats. While House and Senate Republicans announced on Wednesday that they had reached an agreement to pass legislation that would reopen DHS, the House made no effort to pass the bill on Thursday.

According to the New York Times, the agreement was supposed to see the House bring the shutdown to a swift end on Thursday, but House Speaker Mike Johnson didn’t bring the proposal to a vote during a brief, ceremonial session on Thursday morning. The House isn’t scheduled to reconvene until mid-April, making it unclear when they will move to end the shutdown.

“I don’t know the particulars around what the House will do with it, but my assumption is at some point, hopefully, they will move it,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and the majority told reporters on Thursday.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) was quick to place ownership of the shutdown on House Republicans for refusing to pass the bill. “The deep division and dysfunction among House Republicans is needlessly extending the D.H.S. shutdown and hurting federal workers who are missing another paycheck,” Schumer told reporters. “The Senate did its work twice to fund key parts of D.H.S. without funding the lawlessness of ICE and Border Patrol.”

What makes this whole situation exceptionally stupid is that Senate Democrats pitched this legislation two weeks into the shutdown, but Senate Republicans didn’t go for it. Now, after a month, it’s House Republicans refusing to compromise, despite President Donald Trump signaling on Wednesday that he approved the spending bill. 

ICE and CBP already have billions in guaranteed funding due to the Big, Beautiful Bill, making the lack of further funding more of a symbolic victory than anything else. 

While the legislation could potentially end the DHS shutdown, neither Republicans nor Democrats are getting what they wanted. Senate Republicans wanted a spending bill that entirely funds DHS. Senate Democrats refused to pass a spending bill unless it included significant reforms for how ICE operates. 

The shutdown began only weeks after Alex Pretti and Renee Good were fatally shot by federal agents during ICE and CBP’s Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis. Senate Democrats pushed for ICE agents to no longer wear masks, to not conduct operations near schools and hospitals, and for ICE to use judicial warrants to enter people’s homes and workplaces. 

Truly radical left policies. In fact, they’re so radical that nearly every other law enforcement agency already follows them. 

The ongoing DHS shutdown has been felt most at the nation’s busiest airports. As a result of going weeks without pay, a large number of TSA agents called out or even quit. This led to lines at TSA security checkpoints at several airports that stretched for hours throughout March. While an executive order signed by Trump led to TSA agents receiving back pay and returning to work, it’s still unclear when they’ll receive pay for the work they’re currently doing. 

I simply find it maddening that Republicans are causing all this strife for an agency that the majority of Americans have soured on. With the midterms looking to be particularly brutal for Republicans, you’d think that reaching a bipartisan agreement on ICE reforms would just be common sense. 

For a party that claims to love winning, they sure move like a bunch of losers.

An active investigation is underway following the death of Coral Springs, Florida, Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, who was found dead in her home on April 1 in what authorities have described as a “domestic violence incident,” according to WLRN. Her husband, Stephen Bowen, has been charged in connection with the case, CBS News reported.

What happened to Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen?

According to Coral Springs Police Chief Brad Mock, Metayer Bowen’s body was discovered at her residence in the 800 block of Northwest 127th Avenue around 10 a.m. Wednesday, after officers were asked to conduct a welfare check. 

Per CBS Miami, a fellow commissioner in the community “suspected something was off” when Metayer Bowen, 38,  missed a meeting Wednesday morning. She served as the chair of the City’s Charter School Board. 

Officials have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding her death.

“This is an active investigation, therefore, [we are] unable to provide any further details at this time and cannot answer any questions,” Mock said during a press conference Wednesday.

Mock added that the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Fort Lauderdale police, and Plantation police assisted in the initial response. Later Wednesday, Coral Springs police asked for the public’s assistance, urging anyone with information to contact the department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit or Detective Daniel Powers. There are no other suspects and no threats to the public, he said.

Family members of the Democrat also confirmed the heartbreaking news on Instagram, asking for privacy as the investigation continues.

“On behalf of our entire family, we are deeply saddened to share the passing of my beloved sister Nancy Metayer-Bowen,” the family’s statement read in part. “She was not only a cherished member of our family, but also a dedicated public servant who committed her life to improving the lives of others.” 

They added, “Throughout her years in public office, she led with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering sense of purpose. She believed in bringing people together, listening to those she served, and working tirelessly to create positive change in her community. To us, she was a source of strength, wisdom, and love—someone who always put others before herself.”

Stephen Bowen has been charged and is in police custody.

Stephen Bowen has since been taken into custody and charged with premeditated murder and tampering with or fabricating evidence, CBS News reported. CBS News Miami and the Sun-Sentinel noted he was in custody at the Broward County main jail.

On April 2, Stephen Bowen reportedly appeared before a judge for a bond hearing and was ordered to be held without bond.

“I have reviewed the probable cause affidavit. The court does find probable cause for the charges,” the judge said, per NBC Miami.

His attorney invoked his right to remain silent, stating he would not be questioned by law enforcement.

Who was Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen?

Metayer Bowen was first elected as a commissioner in 2020 and won reelection in 2024. According to her official city biography, she was the first Black and Haitian American woman to serve on the Coral Springs City Commission.

Her career in public service reflected a deep commitment to environmental advocacy and community resilience. Before her time in office, she led environmental justice initiatives across Florida and worked to strengthen communities facing climate and disaster-related challenges. Her passion for leadership began early, when she served as president of her high school’s Student Government Association.

As an environmental scientist and former member of the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District, she brought her expertise to both government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Her work addressed water crises and supported recovery efforts following major storms, including Hurricanes Irma, Michael, and Dorian.

State politicians sent their condolences.

News of her death sent shockwaves through Florida’s political community.

Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz shared his disbelief on X, writing: “I’m in shock. I was just with her on Saturday.” Moskowitz said the political star had been dealing with grief from the loss of her brother, whom she “buried” recently and claimed she was gearing up to “announce she was running for Congress.” 

He also described her as “one of the nicest people” he had worked with, adding that she was “always fighting for her community” and “always pushing to help.”

Her colleague, Commissioner Joshua Simmons, spoke emotionally during a Wednesday press conference. 

“ That was our battle buddy. She had such a good heart. She truly cared about people,” said Simmons. “Our commission is incomplete. And we know that time is gonna move and time is gonna do its thing. But for us that are in this city and in the city hall that have been touched or impacted by Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen — that is a loss that is gonna take a lot of time to deal with.”

State Rep. Dan Daley of Coral Springs also expressed his grief and remembered her legacy of service.

“Nancy was someone who truly cared about people and about this community. Her commitment to public service and her belief in the future of our community were clear in everything she did,” Daley said in a statement. “Anyone who spent even a few minutes with Nancy remembers her smile and enthusiasm for public service,” he said. “She lit up a room and made you feel like you mattered. That is a rare quality, and it is something our community was better for.

“This is a tremendous loss for Coral Springs,” Daley added.

Welp, another devoted, thoroughly MAGA-fied member of the Trump administration has bitten the proverbial dust, as President Donald Trump has fired U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Not long before it was made official, mainstream news outlets, including CNN, the New York Times, and NBC News, had reported statements from Trump administration officials, saying Trump had been growing increasingly frustrated with Bondi and is considering her termination — and, as we all know, the last time something like that happened, now-former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem was out like her husband’s cock-eyed balloon breasts. (OK, that was mean. Obviously, Kristi didn’t Noem very well. Nah, but I’ma stop, though.)

Well, now, it has been confirmed that Bondi will no longer serve as the U.S.’s top legal authority and, according to Trump, will be replaced for now by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who will serve as acting attorney general. Much like when Noem got the axe, Trump didn’t say he had outright fired Bondi, but that she is simply “transitioning” to some new position after praising her for bringing crime to an all-time low, even though crime in the U.S. has done almost nothing but decline over the past few decades.

The president wrote on Truth Social that Bondi would be “transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector,” praising her for her work in his administration and offering no specific reason for why she would be leaving.

“Pam Bondi is a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General over the past year. Pam did a tremendous job overseeing a massive crackdown in Crime across our Country, with Murders plummeting to their lowest level since 1900,” Trump wrote.

So, now I have a few questions?

Why is Trump getting rid of all of his most prominent stupid white women? Is Karoline Leavitt safe? Should Linda McMahon update her resume? What does Druski have to say about all this? Is Bondi about to become the Special Envoy of Neo-Nazi Narnia, or whatever? Who TF is this Todd Blanche guy, and has the president run out of MMA-fighting plumbers to fill his Cabinet with? Has anyone checked Bondi’s husband’s online activity? (OK, I promise, that was the last one.)

Seriously, when Trump starts cleaning house like this, I always have to wonder what the last straw was that got a top official thrown under the MAGA bus. Was Bondi not loyal?

Besides working tirelessly to repeatedly and embarrassingly fail to prosecute his political rivals, Bondi has thrown temper tantrums before Congress on behalf of the president.

She essentially claimed roughly two-thirds of the U.S. population was on drugs until Trump saved them like some deranged MAGA cultist.

Trump’s ever-loyal lap-dog-at-law was seen traveling with him when he stopped by the U.S. Supreme Court as justices heard arguments on his bid to end birthright citizenship before reportedly leaving in a huff because the discussions with his Bargain Basement-ass solicitor general weren’t going well. Bondi also stood with Trump on Wednesday night, when he wasted America’s time by providing us with an “update” on his Iran war, which was more of a lazy rehashing of all the contradictory nonsense he had been tweeting and telling reporters about the conflict for weeks.

So, why is she getting a pink slip a day later? What did she do?

Before anything was confirmed, CNN reported that Trump’s seemingly sudden sourness towards Bondi largely stemmed from her and the Justice Department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein debacle, which has been a PR nightmare for the president since nearly the start of his second term, and has largely resulted in him looking more and more like he has something to hide.

But, again, Bondi ain’t been loyal to Trump when it comes to Epstein? She hasn’t served honorably as his redactor-in-chief?

Hell, in February, when Bondi was asked on the Senate floor if she would apologize to Epstein’s victims for her department’s alleged negligence, she responded by shouting with her whole chest that it is Trump who is owed an apology for all the hate he has endured.

Bondi went hard for Trump like somebody who really, reeeeally wanted to keep her job.

Oh, well. Tariffs and prayers, blessings and balloon titties. (OK, that was the last one.)

The Trump administration hasn’t had a lot of luck with federal judges as of late, but it got one to rule in its favor regarding allegations of on-campus antisemitism at colleges — for which the administration, apparently, needs to solicit potential victims that may or may not exist.

According to Politico, U.S. District Judge Gerald J. Pappert has ordered the University of Pennsylvania to comply with a subpoena from the Trump administration, specifically the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, demanding information about alleged harassment of Jewish employees, including a full list of Jewish individuals and Jewish-linked school groups and organizations. The EEOC  issued an administrative subpoena to the university in June 2025 to gather evidence and identify potential victims of alleged acts of antisemitism in the wake of the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, which the Trump administration has been doing its best to conflate with general support for Palestine since the start of President Donald Trump’s second term. 

Of course, the administration’s subpoena had prompted school officials to argue that demanding a “list of Jews,” well, sounds like Nazi sh-t.

The university asked the EEOC to revoke or modify the subpoena, but the agency denied that request. After the EEOC moved to enforce the subpoena, the school — alongside a coalition of organizations including the American Association of University Professors — filed a motion challenging the request in January. The school and the coalition expressed concerns that the request could infringe on the rights, safety and privacy of Jewish members of the university by mandating the creation and compilation of a list including ties to their religious identities.

But U.S. District Judge Gerald J. Pappert, an Obama appointee, rejected those concerns, saying the university and the coalition “significantly raised the dispute’s temperature by impliedly and even expressly comparing the EEOC’s efforts to protect Jewish employees from antisemitism to the Holocaust and the Nazis’ compilation of ‘lists of Jews’.”

“Such allegations are unfortunate and inappropriate,” the judge wrote.

But is it “inappropriate” though?

Actually, let’s start with this question: if on-campus antisemitism and harassment at the University of Pennsylvania is so abundant and out of control, why does the EEOC need a judge to reinforce a fishing expedition to find victims?

This is, after all, the same EEOC that recently launched an investigation into Nike over vague anti-white discrimination claims that didn’t seem to be made by anyone in particular. Last year, the same federal department put out a video advertisement, literally soliciting white men to come forward with reverse-racism claims that may or may not be (but very likely are) imaginary.

In February, the Trump administration’s thoroughly subjugated Department of Justice requested to join a federal lawsuit accusing the Los Angeles Unified School District of discriminating against white students that had absolutely nothing to do with the administration at all.

It’s almost as if the administration is a bloodhound, and any whiff of a potential anti-white discrimination case — which could easily include cases about alleged antisemitism — is enough to put its nose in the air.

“While we acknowledge the important role of the EEOC to investigate discrimination, we also have an obligation to protect the rights of our employees,” a University of Pennsylvania spokesperson said in a statement. “We continue to believe that requiring Penn to create lists of Jewish faculty and staff, and to provide personal contact information, raises serious privacy and First Amendment concerns. The University does not maintain employee lists by religion.”

The university also said it plans to appeal the court’s decision.

The actress and her The Drama costar, Robert Pattinson, appeared on an episode of The New York Times’ Modern Love podcast released on Wednesday, April 1.

During their interview on the relationship-based podcast, Zendaya opened up about why she hasn’t confirmed or denied her rumored marriage to Tom Holland. Though the pair went public with their engagement in January 2025, Z’s longtime stylist Law Roach claimed a month ago the pair secretly got married—which neither party has directly commented on.

“I just feel like for me there is a level of a parasocial investment in my personal relationship, which I understand,” Zendaya told Modern Love host Anna Martin. “I’m aware that I’m a public person and so is he, and I’m also aware that we’ve grown up in front of people and we’ve done movies where we fall in love with each other, so I really do understand that, and I don’t want to dismiss that like, ‘Stay out of my business’ or whatever.”

She continued, “In a lot of ways, I’m also a very private person and I try my best to be able to have things for myself and for him as well.”

The actress went on to explain that she and Holland are not trying to “hide [themselves] from the world,” but rather, trying to “preserve things” for themselves in order to “maintain that joy” between the two of them and their families.

Zendaya, who has been further fueling the marriage speculation by wearing a wedding band, insists that she gets why there’s a lot of public interest in her relationship, but she still refuses to share some details with fans.

“I hear it, but I also [have] my own little boundaries of what I like to bring up and talk about, but then also what I’m also willing to share, you know?” she said. “I just try to find the balance in the middle there.”

Despite wanting to keep more intimate details of her relationship under wraps, Zendaya did get deeper about their connection during the podcast.

“I knew this is my person because I don’t feel nervous around them,” she explained. “I feel really peaceful, and I feel really calm like, oh, I actually feel more nervous when I’m away from you than when I’m with you.”

While talking about how she “first met” Holland at an audition, Zendaya went on to say, “I was pretty nervous anyway, but he did make me feel calm…Just by being a nice person, you know? By making me feel comfortable. I mean, it’s like having to do a chemistry read for a big movie like that. It’s like, oh, you really want the job, and all these kind of things. And yeah, he was really lovely then.”

She gushed over Tom further while talking about them growing up with one another, referencing the fact that they first met while auditioning for 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, going on to reprise their roles in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“I feel like I’m biased because I’ve been able to grow up with the person that I love and get to know them through being literally a teenager to now,” Zendaya said of knowing Holland for nearly a decade. “So it’s like, of course we’re going to change and we’re going to grow and life is like whatever, but I still feel like there’s a bond or a connection that you feel like you know someone, at least enough to feel safe with them.”

Here’s the thing: When President Donald Trump gives a speech, it’s never for the American people; it’s for himself.

Whenever Trump schedules some random, nationally televised address, it’s virtually always because he can see how increasingly unpopular he and his policies are, and he’s hoping that babbling behind a podium for an hour or so will turn everything around for him, which these speeches never do, because they never include any substance.

On Wednesday night, Trump delivered a speech his administration had announced earlier that day, saying he would provide an “important update” on his war in Iran. Predictably, there was no update. What we got was all we should’ve expected to get: the president repeating all of the same barely coherent thoughts he had been posting on social media all week, and more of his delusional praising of himself and the job he has been doing as president, which, of course, is a job like “no one has ever seen before.”

So, basically, the most insecure president we have ever seen made himself feel better temporarily by boring us with self-gratifying lies, while saying nothing new.

Let’s get into it…

“In these past four weeks, our armed forces have delivered swift, decisive, overwhelming victories on the battlefield,” the president said Wednesday night. “Victories like few people have ever seen before.”

Since nearly the start of his and the Israeli government’s strikes on Iran, Trump has been claiming the war is virtually won, that Iran has been decimated, and that its government has been “begging” to make a deal with the U.S. to end it all. And that might make some of the American people feel better about his aggression in the Middle East if not for the fact that he has consistently jumped back and forth between saying those things and saying that Iran’s nuclear capability still needs to be stopped, that our NATO allies need to help, which they have refused to do, prompting the president to change his withering mind on the spot and say we don’t need them. He has taken a similar approach to discussing the Strait of Hormuz, which he said “we don’t need” and that it would “open up naturally” after the conflict is over during his speech, despite the fact that, earlier that same day, he posted on social media that he would only consider ending the conflict “when Hormuz Strait is open, free, and clear.”

Of course, he also said in that social media post that the Iranian government ” just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE!” which the Iranian government denied, as it has every time Trump has made a claim about negotiations with the nation, and how they’re falling in his favor.

But fine, the war is going great. So, that means there’s an end to it in sight, right? Maybe an exact date? At least an approximate timeline?

Please just don’t say two weeks.

“We are on track to complete all of America’s military objectives shortly, very shortly,” Trump said. “We are going to hit them extremely hard. Over the next two to three weeks, we’re going to bring them back to the Stone Ages, where they belong. In the meantime, discussions are ongoing.”

*sigh*

It’s always in “the next two to three weeks.” He said the exact same thing about the complete, comprehensive healthcare plan that would replace Obamacare and save the nation from our failing healthcare system. He said repeatedly that such a plan would manifest in about two weeks — during his first term as president. Since then, that complete, comprehensive health plan became “concepts of a plan,” and now, the president of “no new wars” and great healthcare is saying that because of his new war, the country can’t afford to take care of people’s health.

“We can’t take care of daycare. We’re a big country. We’re fighting wars. It’s not possible for us to take care of daycare, Medicaid, Medicare, all these things,” he said.

Mind you, during that same speech, he spent significant time lying about how well the economy has been doing under his presidency, how there’s been “no inflation,” and, of course, how much better he’s been doing than “the last administration.”

But, whatever. When TF are we getting out of Iran, Trump?

Again, he didn’t say how long it would be before the conflict is over, but he did make an effort to make us feel better by essentially saying, “Hey, at least it probably won’t be as long as World War I, World War II, Vietnam or the war in Iraq — nah, it definitely probably won’t be as long as those.”

OK, so the war is going great, the economy is great, Trump is great. Anything else you want to talk about, Mr. President? How about your completely irrelevant thoughts on Somalia and its people? You still hate them? Still think they’re “low-IQ”? Wanna tell us about that for no discernible reason?

Again, who was this speech even for, if not himself? What did we learn that we hadn’t already heard? What reason is there for us to believe any of it?

Don’t bother trying to answer any of those questions — because the president sure as hell won’t.

Vice Mayor Metayer Bowen was found dead in the morning hours inside her home after police were called to the residence to perform a wellness check. Upon entering the home, they discovered Ms. Metayer Bowen’s body and moved the case to an active investigation. Details regarding the matter have largely been kept scant.

Metayer-Bowen was elected as a commissioner in 2020 and reelected in 2024. According to her bio, she is the first Black and Haitian American woman to serve in the role for the Coral Springs city commission.

Rep. Jared Moskowitz of Florida shared a statement on X regarding the vice mayor’s passing.

Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bown’s family also posted a statement on social media regarding their loved one.

HBCU football players keep proving they belong at the highest level. But when draft night comes around, the numbers tell a different story.

There’s no shortage of talent coming out of historically Black colleges and universities. That’s been true for decades. But according to reporting from HBCU Sports, that talent isn’t translating into consistent opportunities in the NFL Draft. At this point, the pattern is hard to ignore. Every year, fans tune in hoping to hear at least one HBCU name called, and the fact that it’s even a question says everything about the level of visibility these athletes are getting.

The 2025 NFL Draft made that gap even more obvious. Only one active HBCU player was selected. Just one. And while some might try to read that as a reflection of talent, that’s not what’s actually happening. The talent is there. The problem is how often it’s being seen—and who’s being prioritized.

And now, with the 2026 NFL Draft just weeks away, that same question is back on the table. Because this next class isn’t short on ability. It’s full of players who’ve already proven they can compete. The real issue is whether the system will finally recognize it. Whether scouts, front offices, and decision-makers will expand who they see as “draft-worthy,” or whether HBCU athletes will once again be pushed to the margins and forced to prove themselves after the fact instead of being valued from the start.

Because while Power Five athletes move through a well-established pipeline, many HBCU players are forced to take a different route. Instead of hearing their names called on draft night, they’re signing as undrafted free agents, fighting for roster spots at rookie minicamps, and having to prove themselves all over again just to get the same shot.

That’s part of why events like the HBCU Legacy Bowl matter. The NFL has started putting more attention on these showcases, giving standout players a chance to perform in front of scouts and decision-makers. It’s a step forward, but it’s not the same as being fully integrated into the traditional draft pipeline. These players are still being asked to go above and beyond just to be considered.

And here’s the contradiction: the interest is there.

According to HBCU Gameday, multiple HBCU players continue to draw attention ahead of free agency, with teams recognizing their potential and bringing them into camps. So the league is clearly seeing the talent. It’s just not consistently translating into draft-day opportunities. That creates a frustrating reality where HBCU athletes are respected—but not prioritized.

At the same time, the landscape of college football is shifting. With the rise of the transfer portal and NIL deals, players with NFL potential are often incentivized to leave HBCUs for larger programs that offer more exposure and resources. And while that may make sense individually, it raises a broader question about what it means for HBCU programs in the long term. If the system rewards leaving, how do these programs continue to build and keep the talent they develop?

Maybe the question really isn’t about ability, but access. HBCU players are producing. They’re showing up. They’re earning opportunities wherever they can. But until the draft reflects that reality, the pipeline will remain uneven.

And that means too many of these athletes will keep taking the harder path to the same destination and working twice as hard just to be seen.

However, Goodell made it clear that while he will engage with the attorney general, the Rooney Rule remains the absolute law of the league.

D.L. Hughley’s Notes from the GED Section, he tackles a heavy issue that directly impacts our community and our values: who society chooses to celebrate. Hughley broke down the deep contrast between genuine public service and the toxic figures who often receive the loudest praise. By examining the actions of top political figures and media personalities, he challenged us to look closely at the true character of the people put on pedestals.

Hughley reflected on a man who spent his life serving our country in the military and law enforcement. By all accounts, this individual was a decent human being who dedicated his life to service. However, his legacy took a dark turn when he made the unfortunate choice to align his work with Donald Trump. Hughley used this story to remind us how proximity to an amoral leader can overshadow a lifetime of good deeds. It serves as a stark warning about the company we keep and the leaders we choose to support.

The conversation then shifted to a hard look at Trump’s own track record of deep disrespect. Hughley held nothing back, listing the offensive and hurtful things the former president has said over the years. He reminded listeners of the time Trump depicted former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama as apes—a deeply racist trope that strikes at the heart of our community. Hughley also pointed out Trump’s habit of celebrating the misfortune of others, from wishing illness on Joe Biden to disrespecting military veterans like John McCain. This pattern of behavior completely ignores the dignity we work so hard to build and protect.

Hughley aimed his focus at the ongoing push to reward deeply problematic media figures. He brought up Charlie Kirk, a man known for making disparaging remarks about Black people. Despite these harmful comments, political leaders still want to lionize him. They push to dedicate special days in his honor and even name highways after him. For our community, seeing figures who actively disrespect diverse voices get rewarded with public monuments is a tough pill to swallow. It shows a clear disconnect between the values of inclusive representation and the reality of modern politics.

Hughley closed the segment by calling out the desperate desire of these same figures to be immortalized on coins and airports. He left the audience with a heavy, unfiltered thought. If we choose to celebrate and memorialize men with such a clear history of disrespect, where do we draw the line? As Hughley pointedly asked, if these are the heroes we look up to, who exactly are the villains? It is a call to action for all of us to stay culturally connected, empower our own voices, and demand better heroes for the next generation.

Things got a little too close for comfort at Nicki Minaj’s Calabasas, Calif., home this week after a man was arrested for trespassing on her property.

According to reporting from NBC Los Angeles, the incident unfolded early Wednesday morning (April 1) when the suspect entered the rapper’s property and refused to leave when confronted by security.

Law enforcement identified the man as 36-year-old Leland Adams. Authorities say private security at the residence quickly intervened and detained him until deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrived on the scene. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident and remained there as of Wednesday afternoon. Officials confirmed that while the man made it onto the property, he never gained access inside the actual home.

Sources also told NBC Los Angeles that this was not Adams’ first run-in with law enforcement in the Calabasas area, raising additional concerns about repeat behavior in the neighborhood. It remains unclear whether Minaj or her family were home at the time, but fortunately no injuries were reported.

Additional details shared by Complex paint an even more unsettling picture. The suspect was reportedly spotted on surveillance footage roaming the backyard in the early hours, described as wearing a gray tracksuit with long hair and a noticeable red beard. Deputies quickly responded after being alerted, preventing the situation from escalating further.

The incident adds to a string of security concerns surrounding Minaj’s Los Angeles-area property. The rap superstar has previously dealt with multiple swatting incidents, including a particularly alarming situation in 2025 when dozens of officers reportedly showed up at her home with weapons drawn while her young son was inside. At the time, Minaj publicly expressed frustration and alleged deeper issues behind the repeated calls.

It also comes on the heels of another scary situation for a fellow celeb. As previously reported, Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 35, was arrested after allegedly firing a semiautomatic rifle at Rihanna’s Beverly Crest mansion.

While the trespassing incident was handled quickly, it highlights the ongoing safety challenges that come with celebrity status. For fans, it is another reminder that behind the glam, stars like Nicki Minaj are often dealing with very real and sometimes dangerous situations at home.

The 2026 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame class was announced and let’s just say that some NBA fans aren’t too happy to see one name amongst the rest: Doc Rivers. 

On Tuesday, NBA insider Shams Charania broke the news that basketball greats Amar’e Stoudemire, Candace Parker, Elena Delle Donne, and Doc Rivers were among those headed to Springfield as part of the 2026 class. 

Parker, Delle Donne and Stoudemire were transcendent talents that had storied careers and helped elevate the game. But some felt that Rivers, an NBA head coach with several teams, who had loads of talented roster but only produced one NBA championship with the Boston Celtics didn’t belong in this mix. 

Fans online were loud, immediate, and relentless, questioning whether Rivers truly meets Hall of Fame standards.

“I mean, Doc was great in ‘08 but nah man,” wrote one user.

“Am I seeing that last name right ?” another noted. 

“Hey brother, I just refreshed my app a few times … you still have time to delete this … you CAN’T put Doc in the hall,” another replied. 

“Doc Rivers? The dude has had so much talent and has gotten one title out of it,” another responded.

Newsweek notes that “Rivers has been on an NBA sideline since 1999, building one of the longest and most durable coaching careers of his era.

He currently has 1,191 career wins, sixth all-time, and won the 2000 Coach of the Year award in his first season with the Orlando Magic.”

In 2008 he led the Celtics, with Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen to promised land. He also led the Los Angeles Clippers and the Philadelphia 76ers deep into the playoffs. He’s currently the coach of the Milwaukee Bucks who are having a down season that could cost him his job. 

Rivers is currently sixth in all-time coaching wins in the NBA, but critics of Rivers look more to the playoff games he’s lost despite having loads of talent. 

Newsweek notes that many of those against his induction in the Hall of Fame point to “multiple series collapses, most notably during the Clippers’ ‘Lob City’ era and later in Philadelphia.”
