A soft-spoken polite and intelligent man, he is at once one of the most effective fighters and instructors I have met. He generates what seems to be an unbelievable amount of power from a lean wiry frame.
I’ve heard a few things about Mr Hinkley, all of which are mentioned in awe. Here is a snapshot of what has been whispered to me: 1. He wakes up in the morning and practices forms for 1 hour every day.2. He shaves and brushes teeth with his non-dominant left hand in order to improve fine motor skills3. He took a full bo strike to the head (done accidentally) and didn’t flinch. It was mentioned that he was grinning whilst blood poured down his face.4. He was doing 100 situps a month after open [...]

Despite growing insight into neuroscience and the physical limitations of our consciousness, we have the tendency to ascribe a limitlessness to our minds. We readily accept the existence of certain boundaries in the material world, like fences, social stations, rules, laws (of physics and of states), or physical characteristics (”You must be this tall to ride the roller-coaster”), but when it comes to the inner world – the mind, our memories, our imagination, our cognition, and our social skills – we have trouble conceiving of real mechanical limits. When a word eludes us, playing about the periphery of our cognition (“tip of the tongue”), do we complain about faulty hardware? When we forget that cute girl’s name we just met at the party, do we blame the lack of available short-term memory data “chunks”? It’s only through neurological research that we’re even “aware” of the bioelectric interplay that is our [...]

Tai Chi was originated in Chan Ja Gou in China and therefore called the Chan’s Tai Chi. No one knew about Tai Chi before 1850 when Tai Chi was first brought to Beijing by master Yeung. Until 1930s when the legendary tai chi master Chan Fa Ke came to Beijing, there were already many people teaching different styles of Tai Chi. Chan has the incredible skills and techniques that not only made him a legend but also a treasure to all his students.

During that time there were some people practicing Ng’s Tai Chi in Beijing and were quite famous. They heard about master Chan and his skills, so they invited him for some cultural exchange and sharing. After they greeted each other, they invited Master Chan to show them his Taichi routines. Master Chan did not refuse and immediately started doing his routines. After that he was leaving.

Everyone else were assuming an hour for the observation but turn out he finished in a little bit more than 10 minutes. They marveled at how powerful and quick master Chan’s moves were and started discussing. Some said he was too fast which is not correct according to traditional Tai Chi theory. But the Master Lau knew that although he did the moves fast, they were executed in smooth circle motions and although there were releasing of power, he remained relaxed. He was very humble and decided to learn Tai Chi under Chan.

One of Chan’s students was Master Hung who later became a really important person is the development of Taichi Kung Fu. Hung learnt the essence of Chan’s Kung Fu and improved the whole system and called it Practical Tai Chi.

A move that Hung improved is the beginning move of the first routine of Chan’s Tai Chi. The move is called the King Kong Pounding. In 1957, Hung visited Chan in Beijing. He took the opportunity to enquire Chan about the King Kong Pounding move. He questioned whether the move can really be practically executed in real combat to handle powerful punches. Chan was positive about it due to his personal experiences. After that Hung modified to move and simplified the uses. Basically, the move is simply to direct opponents punch with right hand forearm and at the same time to twist left arm internally to avoid any possible elbow attack and use opponent’s force to bounce himself away.

Hung used to tell a story about this move. During a time in the past, Chan was employed as a martial artist to defend a city due to the robberies there. Another martial artist in town heard the news came for a fight. Chan was smoking in the house with both hands holding something. The man came in and tried to punch Chan right away. Chan used the King Kong Pounding move to contact with his wrist and stretched his fingers. Immediately the man was knocked back and fell out of the door. This is how powerful the simple move can be.

Intermediate belts to Traditional Taekwondo take a significant departure from beginners. Beginners need to learn some very specific ways of generating power, and this is often taught in a very contrived manner …. namely, one punch left dangling out and the other pulled all the way to the hip. This allows you to step forward and practice the same technique again. But is possible the best and worst thing hard style martial art systems did when creating a teaching methodology.
So intermediate belts will learn ways to use both of their hands whilst dealing with strikes from opponents. Expect to hold both hands out, and expect to use both hands to deal with all strikes coming your way. This covers both trapping, coverage, blocking, striking, and some manipulation.
Lots of joint manipulation however, still require the pull back or hikite hand to work. But this pull back hand or hikite [...]

Sometimes the path of Primal transformation includes a series of upendings. It’s in part a process of uprooting daily habits that don’t serve your well-being. Maybe it’s a re-envisioning of your identity from an unhealthy, tired, or otherwise plagued person to that of a strong, fit, confident individual. More than likely, it’s about overturning oft-taught if not long held conventional thinking about healthy living. When we embark on our Primal path, we likely anticipate at least some of these changes, but what about the conflict prompted by other people’s grappling with the Primal Blueprint as we reflect it? What is it about our Primal process that upsets other people’s apple carts and provokes sometimes exaggerated resistance? See what reader Evan has to say.
The art is very popular throughout the world, also being known as Gung Fu, Wu Shu, and even Kuo Shu. It shares some common traits with Karate, such as using both hand and foot methods.
