Hello everybody! We've made it out the other end of the wormhole and we like it here.

The Aviary welcomes famous San Francisco based photographer Michael Shindler of Photobooth to Seattle to take a tintype picture of you!

ABOUT TINTYPE: Tintype also known as wet-plate collodion process originated in 1851 and was revolutionary for the quality and affordability of the images it made. The Tintype process applies a thin layer of light sensitive chemicals to a metal plate. The image is imprinted directly on these plates creating a distinct, one of a kind portrait that accentuates everything that makes you uniquely you. Michael Shindler who owns Photobooth in San Francisco is a recognized leader in this form of portraiture. Michael just completed building a 14” x 17” camera to create the largest format metal plate images he has ever produced, and he is bringing it to Seattle to take your picture. In addition to the large format images, we will also be creating 4” x 5” portraits just like those made over the past several years at Photobooth.

The Apothecary is throwing open its doors for one last epic soiree, and we want you there.

Ellen Covey is our favorite in the "perfumers who are also neuroscientists and orchid farmers" category. The fragrances she makes are really beautiful, affordable, and strange pieces of art. We are thrilled to celebrate her night. The eau de parfum she has crafted for Blackbird is a lush, dark summery scent - blackberries getting overripe in the sun, grass as crackling dry as kindling, and the shadowy branches of fir and cedar trees.

Toss back wine by Wine World and champagne and vodka, eat small things on crackers, and sniff through all of Ellen's fragrances. There will be drawings throughout the evening for many lucky souls to take home perfume and orchid plants. Everything will be on sale next door in Blackbird. BLACKBIRD MEMORY #25... JULKARVA or JULENEK

Every year around Christmas time Nicole would have the store staff put up julenek on our garland and on our trees outside the store. Birds would come to eat the julenek and nobody who passed by could deny the Christmas spirit contained in those ties of grain. It was always fun for us to honor the Scandinavian heritage of our neighborhood, and we hope someone can carry the torch for us when we depart. Read more about julenek below.

A julenek (Norwegian and Danish) or julkarva (Swedish) is a sheaf of grain hung on a tree or pole as a Christmas treat for the birds. One of the most popular symbols in Scandinavia today, they are sold on street corners in the weeks before Christmas. Few homes are without one.

The tradition is actually from olden times, when people believed that taking care of the animals and spirits during the coldest, darkest days of winter would cause good luck and a bountiful harvest the following summer.

Like other winter solstice traditions in rural Scandinavia, it eventually became part of the celebration of Christmas. On farms, the peace of Christmas began before sundown on December 24th, when the sheaf was tied to a pole and erected in the farm yard. It was thought to be very lucky if birds flocked to it as it was being hung.

These sheaves of wheat were harvested by hand in Skagit Valley and were purchased from Stine's Scandinavian Sheaves here in good old Ballard. They are now on sale at the Field House for $3 a bunch.

After nearly 9 years of selling pants to people who need pants, I have decided to close my Blackbird stores to focus on the wholesale sales of our #1 products: Blackbird Incense Pyres, Beard Oil and Black Square Soap (and a few more).

When I started Blackbird, menswear was in a deep rut, but the signs of change were starting to spring up. I had to search far and wide to find clothing that fit, fabrics that would wear well and designs that would move us into the future without breaking the bank or our sensibilities. It wasn't easy. Sales reps frequently said I wasn't buying what all the other stores selected, but that didn't bother me. In no way did I expect that people would take notice of my store, that Blackbird would win menswear awards, and that as I traveled the world, kids I met in other stores would freak out when I said that I owned a store in America called Blackbird. The people were always the best part of this adventure. The mission started out being about the clothes but quickly the people were what mattered most; to see them as who they are, to inspire them to take one step further than the last, and to let them know it was okay to be themselves. I didn't know I would affect people. I didn't know how much you people would affect me.

Saying goodbye is difficult but my new adventure has already started. There is so much more I could say about The Field House, the Blackbird blog, being a little store in Seattle getting worldwide recognition, the customers, Ballard, the time we tried to hatch baby chicks in the store. Too many good times.

To all of our loyal and kind customers (impossible to name them all): You made Blackbird what it is. You believed in this little store. You inspired me. Thank you.

Following an impressive second wave lineup announcement, the Decibel Festival Lineup is already quite significant. For electronic music connoisseurs who know the artists that will be playing, this is a real treat. But maybe you like electronic music but you don't know much about who's who? How are you going to decide where to spend your time during the festival?

It's important to us to really broadcast the opportunity to get acquainted with some of the best DJ's and producers in the world when they come to Seattle for Decibel in September. So with that in mind, over the next couple of months we're going to be spotlighting some artists that we think can't be missed. Hopefully this will help inform you guys who are curious about some of the artists coming to Decibel, and remind electronic vets that for five days out of the year, London, Berlin, New York, and the rest of the world's electronic offering arrives right at your doorstep.

Join us Friday, June 14 for the Grand Opening Party for the Tatterdemalion Pop-Up Shop at Blackbird.

Tatterdemalion is a collection of vintage European and Japanese clothing and textiles curated by our good friend Ty Ziskis. This pop-up concept store will run from June 11th - July 15th in our Ballard store and online.

Over the past years Ty has been developing an exclusive partnership with Cosmo Wise of De Rien (London) who has been collecting, wearing, and giving value to clothing and textiles that had previously been regarded as worthless for many years. Acid stenciled cotton dresses from the early 1900's, extensively and beautifully darned. The farmers' jacket from the 1920's- the moleskin once black now a greyish purple, bleached by sun and sweat to the degree that one could make out the original wearer's body contours in the patina of the garment. The hunter's trousers, wide wale cord crudely yet sturdily held together with a mix of patches and thick stitches. Each piece reveals the repairer's character, social standing and finances in the way they cared for and fixed their clothes.

The interest is always on clothing dating no later than the 1950's. When synthetic fibers became ubiquitous, the post-war boom years and mass production led to a more disposable nature of fashion, and a drop in quality of new garments reduced need of the masses to repair and keep their clothing for several years (if not decades) rather than seasons.

These pieces are regularly rented by stylists and sold privately to designers such as Ralph Lauren and Alexander Wang to name a few. Ty's vision is to share these pieces with the public to enjoy and WEAR rather than be torn apart for reproduction research. There is much life left in these garments that were built to last a life time, and Ty hopes people will continue to wear and repair these beautiful garments.

This is an authentic vintage Belstaff Trialmaster Pro waxed cotton jacket from the late 70's. It is a size 34 and its features include a corduroy-lined collar, two chest and two waist pockets, two belt loops at each side, padding at the shoulders and elbows, a two-sided waxed cotton belt (with reflective surface underneath) and a solid layer of wax for the ultimate in water protection. Made in England.

Robert Geller - Sunglasses
