Renosyd is a Danish waste management firm who we have worked with to produce an audio unit for their recycling bins with the aim of encouraging people to recycle waste materials such as paper, tins, plastic and food.

The unit is fitted to the lid of the bin and is activated through a switch which detects movement, playing the customizable content when the lid if opened, giving a talking bin. The MP3 content can easily be changed through an enclosed USB connection. Sound is an ideal tool in raising awareness of a product and as a means of rewarding users and adding entertainment to an otherwise routine chore.

We take a green view of the world at blackbox-av, as evidenced in our U-Turn Round and solar powered products such as the Audio Solar Post, devices which are powered by renewable energy and are very long lasting thus cutting waste products and reliance on non-renewable and potentially environmentally harmful power sources.

What is audio interpretation sign?

Announcing AudioSign, our latest audio product which takes audio and integrates it into an information or wayside panel. Two models are available.

First there’s AudioSign Touch. This product integrates our solar electronics into a panel to provide up to 10 messages which can be accessed incrementally by up to 2 buttons. The great thing about AudioSign Touch is that the electronics are so slim they fit into a standard 25mm panel with no protrusion.

Then we have AudioSign Turn. This product takes our well known U Turn and integrates it seamlessly with a panel leaving a finished product that looks like it’s always been designed to incorporate a U Turn.

Panel sizes for both Touch and Turn can be whatever the client requires including the popular A0 and A1 formats in vertical or lectern style. The audio can be used to enhance your visitor’s experience by narration, interviews, oral histories, animal noises – in fact whatever audio you’d like to reproduce. These solutions also provide improved access for the visually impaired. Sign artwork can be generated by us or we’ll take your artwork and turn it into an AudioSign of your choice with approvals and sign off’s all through the design process to ensure you receive the product you want.

How does it work?

Instructions on the front of the sign communicate how to use the audio equipment.

For Audio Sign Touch,  simply press the touch sensitive button and increment through the audio tracks.

For Audio Sign Turn, select your message from 8 available using the rotary message selector, turn the handle and listen just as you would on our well known U Turn Round.

The solar system requires that a single solar panel be placed somewhere in on the face of the sign but the cables connecting it to the selector electronics are hidden in a channel within the sign laminate. The wind up product is completely self contained.

A single cup amour cabled headphone bracket is available now.

As part of an initiative to inform visitors about the park, blackbox-av developed an interactive map and timeline software package for Cosmeston Lakes in Penarth.

Built into a custom kiosk, this bespoke software utilizes touch screen technology to present visitors with a map of the area, detailing routes, areas and terrain types. The map can be magnified and orientated through using the touch screen interface providing different views and perspectives of the park and a greater understanding of its layout. The map can be viewed in either English or Welsh adding a bilingual aspect for personal preference.

The interactive timeline contains photographs of the area throughout history showing how it has changed over time. The timeline can be scrolled through and photos enlarged through a simple touch of the screen.

The use of touch screen technology allows for a more natural interface between kiosk and visitor and removes the need for buttons which can break and take up additional space. These door handles were a bespoke project carried out for Catherine Scriven Interpretation and have been installed into the new Darton Centre which has replaced the former Darton Urban District Council Town Hall.

The 1930s Art Deco handles had been part of the building since it opened in 1936 and, along with other artefacts such as stained glass windows, were saved from the demolition of the old building to be fitted into the new centre to preserve the history of the town hall.

How Do They Work?

Turning each handle will play a different audio history about the council building. These handles make use of our SB Lite as the playback device with messages being played through our Amoured Cabled Headphones, providing high quality audio with absolutely no noise pollution.

How Are They Fitted?

The door handles are fitted into a graphics panel with the SB Light behind it providing easy but discrete access to the SD card for updating audio content.

What is Video Frame 15?

Video Frame 15 is our easy-to-use media play back system. Capable of holding up to 15 videos, photos and audio tracks, Video Frame 15 is blackbox-av’s innovative way of allowing users to engage with content, giving them the opportunity to select from a considerable array of media through the simple press of a button. The front “menu card” is interchangeable, allowing you to change the design to suit your content. The Frame also allows for a standby video loop, preventing repetitive playback of content and a chance to showcase what the device has to offer.

How does it work?

Video content is stored as MPEG 4s on a CF card, 4GB maximum, inserted into the back and the device is pre-programmed to play content, meaning media files are simply dropped onto the card and left to run without the need for further setup, resulting in a very quick install and next to no maintenance.
With a VGA display output and 3.5 mm jack audio output, Video Frame 15 is compatible with a huge selection of audio and video equipment and PAL and NTSC compatibility gives the Frame international potential.

How is it fitted?

Video Frame 15 is incredibly lightweight and can be fitted into any suitable wall space, or built into a case or kiosk, both of which can be made in-house to customer specifications.

What is Audio Point of Sale Unit?

The Audio Point of Sale Unit is an innovative, cost effective, purpose-built audio playback system for talking signs or pictures. Utilizing flat speaker technology in a durable, slim-line casing, the Audio Point of Sale Unit is ready for immediate use in the promotion of:

• products and services in the retail environment
• promotion and reinforcement of health and safety issues
• fixed exhibit interpretation in museums and attractions

Flat panel speaker technology results in high quality audio and an incredibly lightweight construction. The appearance will usually be a photograph of your choice.

How does it work?

Capable of holding up to 150 seconds of audio, the Audio Point of Sale Unit is available in two sizes, 297 x 210 x 40 mm (A4) and 210 x 110 x 40 mm. Both models can be fitted with a movement sensor which will automatically play messages when a person is nearby.
The A4 unit can be supplied with up to four buttons, allowing for playback of separate audio messages if preferred. The unit is powered by 3 x AA batteries and based on a 15 second audio track you may expect to get around 3000 plays per set of batteries. A mains power supply is available as an optional extra for long term use.
Audio Point of Sale is supplied with messages installed and ready to use. It is not possible to change the messages once recorded but this is reflected in the low cost of the unit.

How is it fitted?

APSU is designed to be fitted almost anywhere you need including ceiling suspension, wall mounting, free-standing or being fixed to other units. It’s so lightweight that it can be fixed with Velcro strips to almost any surface. In panel mounting, making it almost flush, is also possible.

What is it?

A compact PIR (movement) activated MP3 audio playback device with changeable content via an easy to use drag and drop USB 2.0 feature.

How does it work?

The USB Point of Sale Unit has a PIR sensor which detects human movement. Powered by a battery or ac mains power, the speaker will play an audio message when activated. These units are ideal for use within large, cardboard cut-out stands and will be trialled in 30 supermarkets across Sweden and are also perfect for used within the museum environment.

How is it fitted?

The audio playback unit has been designed to go into a large cardboard stand, temporary features or units where the content is changed on a regular basis.

What makes the blackbox-av amoured cable headphones unique?

Not only do they produce excellent sound quality, we also attach them in a special way. At the end of each 1.2m armoured cable is a 90° knuckle which allows the cable to pass through a wall or surface and fixes the headphones in place.

Many companies use glands which allow the cable to pass straight through a material but they do not allow the cable to hang naturally, putting strain onto the cable and the fitting. This knuckle also limits cable movement to 45° providing a sound anchor point and preventing the cable from being twisted around which can quickly cause damage to the inner cable, requiring a service call to repair.

What is it?

The Audio Kiosk is a free-standing kiosk built to house our popular Audio Frame 15.

How Does it Work?

The Audio Frame has fifteen buttons to play audio content and has customizable front artwork which can be designed to suit your information and audio needs. Each button can be configured to hold from one to ten audio tracks.

Visitors select a track by pressing the desired button. Audio can then be played through one of the three following options:

3. One 4 Ohm speaker, or two 8 Ohm speakers.

How is it Fitted?

What’s my oppinion?

All interesting stuff and for the people who are into their technology this can be a great way to get more information. Like most modern technologies within museums there is a balance and its an art to get it right - accessibly is the important factor. Not everyone has a smart phone so for families this technology may not be the ideal to include all members. Know your visitors and supply options to cater for the technology hungry and also the not so technology savvy. Above all content is king – supply a small amount of interpretation not masses of information.

This is a quick video made which shows the programming procedure for our U-Turn Round.

If the programmer will not move past the ready flash this is because the file format is in-correct.

This Point of Sale Unit is designed to sit behind a cardboard display stand. As customers walk past the unit a PIR sensor detects their movement and plays back an MP3 audio file. Content is reprogrammable via a fast USB 2.0 connection, with the unit being powered by internal batteries or a DV plug connection which will also recharge the internal batteries. A useful delay option gives the unit a 30 second delay between messages.

The trail features 3 U-Turn Rounds that were installed into interpretation panels with bi-lingual Welsh and English messages. As well as being a stand alone product, U Turn Round can be specified for panel mounting as can be seen in the photograph. The trail was interpreted by Sian Shakepeare who has also kindly contributed the photograph.

The audio-visual interpretation features information about the wildlife associated with the lake and how the lake was developed.

UK Cinemas Odeon and Vue take our Message In A Speaker to help with the launch of Transformers 3.

The speakers will be placed within the entrance to cinemas. As visitors move through the entrance they trigger the PIR sensor which then activates the audio playback. The audio contains the voice of Optimus Primes….keep an eye out at your local cinema!

Our customer needed an audio player and speaker to fit into a compact space behind a light in a Victorian bathing room.

blackbox-av produced this interactive map of the world specially for The Tower of London’s Royal Beasts Exhibition at the request of KCA London. Visitors were able to explore the map through an interactive wand which would play the sound of a Royal Beast if they located one of the hotspots found across the world.

This custom built, interactive touch screen kiosk was built for the Pierhead Building, Cardiff. These polling stations sit within the conference room and allow presenters and organisers to post questions from an online interface. Once a question has been posted, the user simply hits the update button to load it to the three kiosks within the building with real-time results being accessed and outputted from the public’s response.

These kiosks are a perfect addition to the building’s mission statement to “inform, involve and inspire” their visitors.

What Are Audio Solar Electronics?

Button or movement activated through an infrared sensor (PIR), audio solar electronics are capable of storing two audio messages. We are able to supply customers with either the Audio Solar Post, or simply the internal components, which is ideal for those who wish to install the product into their own creations.

How Do They Work?

Powered by 2 or 4 solar panels, depending upon usage, Audio Solar Electronics come with 2 activation buttons or a movement sensor (PIR). Through the use of buttons, users can select which of the two messages they wish to hear, whilst the movement sensor allows for automatic play back of a message, alternating between the two messages in turn if required. Additional features include 4 volume settings as well as playback statistics, delivered in audio format, which allow customers to keep track of how many times the installation has been used. With the additional purchase of a Programmer, customers can easily load new content when they desire.

How Are They Fitted?

Solar Audio Electronics should be fitted between 90 degrees maximum and 60 degrees minimum from the vertical to allow for clear audio playback and effective drainage of water from the water-proof speaker. Recent installation examples include being fitted into statues and in the ceilings of outdoor constructs, such as gazebos.

We receive many requests to convert classic telephones and radios into working sound points. Though customer requests may vary slightly, they tend to ask for a device which allows visitors to dial a number to hear a pre-recorded message.

A project we carried out for the National Trust was special in that the phone we produced was activated through movement. The Trust desired a wireless solution for this product as they planned to move the unit around the house it was in and a motion sensor provided a great deal of flexibility and independence of location.

An infra-red (PIR) sensor in the phone detects when people are nearby causing the 1960s telephone to ring. If a visitor answers, a message is played to them through the handset, if they do not answer within 10 seconds, the ringing stops. Visitors are also free to dial a number to hear the message.

This product demonstrates blackbox-av’s ability to develop a product to meet a customer’s specific requirements.

We designed and manufactures this unit specifically for Cyfarthfa Castale which, like many other museums, is a listed building where fixing to the floor is not allowed. The solution we provided was a free-standing unit with a solid base, sturdy construction and a low centre of gravity to prevent it from being knocked over.

The finished audio playback unit makes use of our popular SB Lite Audio Player to deliver six messages. Stainless steel push buttons provide three English and three Welsh audio tracks, which are played back through our rugged Armour Core Cabled Headphones which also help to limit local noise pollution.

Our client requested a durable finish for the message descriptions which we achieved with a laser engraved face plate whilst out sustainability credentials were preserved through using local suppliers, within 15 miles, for the metalwork, engraving and base manufacture with the final product being constructed at our premises in Port Talbot.

These solid state sound stores are activated through simple push buttons and have been used to communication information about Liverpool’s ‘secret gardens’, sharing their facts about where each one is placed, unknown secrets, fantastical facts, tall tales, myths and poems through the Mythophone statues themselves.

How Do They Work?

A visitor simply pushes one of the two buttons to hear an audio message. Each Mythophone sculpture has two solar panels mounts on the top which provides a trickle charge to the solid state, lower power electronics box which is fully water-proof and custom built for these installations.

The audio content can be reprogrammed on site as well as allowing for volume control and playback statistics showing how many times the units have been used.

Within the first six weeks of installation, the total number of plays for all of the Mythophones was 14691.

This is a custom built Video Tour Guide created for Monmouth Shire Hall.

The interactive video guide displays a series of HD video and information for the visitor as they explore the courthouse. The content explores the case of three men; John Frost, Zephaniah Williams and William Jones who were part of the Chartist political movement involved in the Newport Uprising of 1839. The case ran from New Years Eve 1839 until 16^th January 1840 and is well known for its national petition on behalf of the three men, political involvement and corruption within the Government.

A bespoke charger was also designed to store the video guides in a convenient location behind the welcome area, providing ease of use for staff and a superb learning platform for visitors.

This is an interactive touchscreen kiosk custom built for the Welsh Assembly Government.

The purpose of the kiosk is to showcase projects from the Welsh Assembly Government. The case houses a 42in touchscreen with a touch-slider to display project titles in an iPod style album viewer, allowing the user to scroll through project images and titles. Clicking on a project provided the viewer with further information, images, videos, PDFs and Word Documents which would be printed from a printer also housed within the case with documents being delivered via the rear door of the unit.

What is Solar Sound Round?

How Does it Work?

The audio handset contains a compact, high quality speaker which can be connected to a playback device, such as blackbox-av’s SB Lite.

How Do they Work?

Simply connect the headphones to your audio playback device using the 3.5mm multi-jack. A mini jack converter is available if required. If you are in need of an audio device we recommend an SB Lite which contains on-board amplifier and can output to 2 ACC headphones.

The headphones are supplied with a 90° swivel knuckle which can be slotted through a panel or casing to the playback device via the jack connector. We also offer a headphone holder as shown below.

What is the PIR Solar Post?

A self powered external PIR activated talking post which is sister product of the Button Solar Post. Want movement activated sound indoors? Check out the Message In A Speaker

How does it work?

Its powered by a solar panel. In the front of the post is a PIR sensor, which detects human movement and then plays back a message which loops. A useful “delay” option means you can set a timed delay between messages being triggered – this can help to reduce the repetitiveness of the message. The repetitiveness of the message…haha.

How is it fitted?

As the product requires power from the sun we recommend its position to be south facing (if your in the Northern Hemisphere – North is best for the Southern Hemisphere). The case comes in two options a post which is fixed to the ground or a small box which can be fixed to the wall.

What is the Audio Solar Post?

Activated either by two external buttons, or an infrared motion sensor, the solar powered Audio Post is a self-powered audio sound store, capable of holding two audio messages. We also provide the option to buy the internal electronics separately. See the Audio Solar Electronics page.

How Does it Work?

The Audio Solar Post is powered by 4 solar panels, housed behind a stainless steel grille. The panels are angled in such as way as to provide optimal exposure to sunlight throughout the day. With the 2 button option, users are able to select which message they wish to hear whilst using a motion sensor means that the device will play automatically, alternating between the two messages with each use if required. Additional features include 4 volume options and the ability to obtain playback statistics, in audio format, to see how many times the unit has been used. With the additional purchase of a Programmer, customers can easily load new content when they desire.

How is it Fitted?

Smaller units can be fitted onto a wall or on top of existing way markers. Tall posts can be fixed to the floor, a ground plinth or mounted into concrete.

What is the Maximum Length of Each Message?

The two button Audio Solar Post will store up to 12 minutes of audio content, which can be split between the two buttons. For example, 6 minutes per button or 4 minutes on button one and 8 minutes on button two. This length is also determined by the audio recording level:

At 11 kHz, you can record a total of 24 minutes of audio.

At 22 kHz, you can record a total of 12 minutes of audio.

Remember though, a person’s attention span when listening to such apparatus is usually no more than 1 to 2 minutes per message.

How Does it Work?

What is it?

The SB Lite is a solid state digital audio playback device which can be activated by buttons or a PIR motion sensor.

How Does it Work?

The Content

Audio files, stored in the .wav format, are formatted onto an SD card which is then inserted into the SB Lite. The maximum card size accepted is 4GB SD (not SD HD), with a 128mb card holding 42 minutes of audio content at 22 kHz, 16 bit mono.

The SB Lite can be programmed to play one file continuously in a loop, or eight tracks in consecutive or random playback. A user variable time delay can be implemented in order to reduce the repetitiveness of the messages being played.

The Activation Options

There are a range of activation options to trigger messages from the SB Lite:

1. A PIR sensor which detects movement, or
2. A standard unit with 2 activation buttons. An upgraded model is available with 8 buttons, one per message. Please contact us for more information.

The Output Options

1. Up to 2 audio handsets. See the Audio Plastic Handset or the Audio Aluminium Handset.

2. Up to 2 Audio Headphones.

3. The SB Lite features a built in 1w internal amplifier which allows for one 4 Ohm or two 8 Ohm speakers.

How is it Fitted?

The device is incredibly easy to install due to its compact size and at 150g, is very lightweight. The efficient nature of the SB Lite’s design means it can be installed almost anywhere and its two fixing wings allow it to be fitted securely into any suitable space.

How Do They Work?

The phones below are just one example of what blackbox-av is capable of producing. Built with a PIR movement sensor, the phone would ring when visitors walked past and when answered, it would randomly play one of nine messages for them.

Other examples include allowing visitors to dial numbers on a phone to hear specific messages or dialling any number for random playback.

What is Message in a Speaker?

Message in a Speaker is our unique, space and cable saving audio device which is triggered by movement. Able to hold up to eight messages, the device is capable of continuous, sequential or randomized playback.

How Does it Work?

A PIR (Passive Infrared) movement sensor is mounted behind the grille of the speaker which, when activated, triggers the playback of audio stored on an easy to use SD card held in the back of the case. The Speaker comes with a time delay option which can be altered as required, to prevent repetition and clear distinction between different messages.

How is it Fitted?

The Message in a Speaker comes supplied with a wall/ceiling bracket and security cable, though it can also be left free standing.

What is the SD Listening Post?

The SD Listening Post is a solid state listening post that is capable of storing 999 tracks.

How Does it Work?

MP3 audio content is stored on an SD card which is inserted into a covered slot on the top of the unit. To play a message, the user simply types in their desired track number followed by *. For example, if they wish to listen to track one, the user enters 001*.

Output options:

Up to 2 Audio Headphones.

The SD Listening Post also features an internal amplifier which allows for one 4 Ohm or two 8 Ohm speakers.

What is Audio Frame 15?

Audio Frame 15 is a compact and durable listening point system for customizable audio content. With 15 buttons, Audio Frame 15 is capable of playing up to 150 messages, ten messages per button.  You can also change the front display menu to suit your needs and match the audio content used. We also have a video equivalent called the Video Frame 15.

How Does Audio Frame 15 Work?

Simply press a button hear audio content.

Button Arrangement:
Buttons can be configured to play from one to ten messages, depending on your needs and programming, allowing the Audio Frame 15 to store and play up to 150 tracks. The device also comes with volume controls and a 10 segment LED display which shows volume level, as well as which message, within a group of ten, a user is listening to.

The sample below shows the layout of the buttons on the Audio Frame 15, 3 x 5 groups with 2 volume controls either side of the LED display at the bottom, with an example of the artwork which can be overlaid. You can be as creative as you wish with your artwork and this Artwork Template provides you with a canvas upon which you can begin designing. Audio Frame 15 reads .wav files from an SD card housed in a covered slot on the base of the unit which itself is secure and easy to change.

What is Lightbox 2?

Lightbox 2 is a content management system for displaying video, image and audio files and is an excellent way to make a highly professional and interesting interface from archive photos, videos and audio tracks for visitors to view and explore.

Lightbox 2 is our second generation media browser and it now boasts an array of new features:

How Does it Work?

The software is split into two sections;

2. The Viewer or “front end” of the software displays all the content that you have input through the skin design that you have chosen to the public or visitor.

What does it run on?

Directional Speakers

Passive Infra Red Sensor

Many of our audio-visual devices can be activated via a passive infrared sensor (PIR) which detects the motion of an infrared emitting source, usually a human body, passing through a detection field. These small, unobtrusive sensors are perfect for triggering the playback of soundtracks, atmospheric sound effects or to start a video presentation. They can also be used to activate animatronic puppets or physical effects such as wind and cold air blowers.

The VS 300 provides reliable, interactive playback of high quality video files and photos on screens and monitors in demanding commercial environments such as museums, heritage sites and other attractions. The files are stored and played directly from a solid state CF memory card housed in a protected slot.

The Interactive

Our in-house team of creatives – Clocked In – have created interactive software that uses position sensitive “hotspots” to enable access of more in-depth informative on particular items or locations visible to the visitor. These hotspots are linked to the direction the GuidA Rotate is pointing and can provide text, video, animation or audio information on items of particular interest. So the 360° interactive is totally synchronised to the space around the kiosk and the direction the GuidA Rotate is facing – ideal for greatly improving the visitor’s comprehension.

Looking Back in Time

A GuidA Rotate Kiosk system has been prepared for a newly renovated Museum in Southampton. This will enable visitors to discover the “space” within the house and view the room through four different historical periods of habitation – Tudor, Georgian, Victorian and Modern. Additionally, the interactive will help visitors to explore other aspects of the heritage site; how the building fits into its surroundings, and what’s in the rooms not yet open to the public – further enhancing the sites’ DDA access compliance.

What is a PIR Sensor?

A Passive Infrared Sensor (PIR) is an electronic device that measures infrared light radiating from objects within its field of view. We use PIRs to detect human movement to activate or de-activate audio and video devices.

How Do They Work?

Apparent motion is detected when an infrared source with one temperature, such as a person, passes in front of an infrared source with a different temperature, such as a wall. When the PIR detects movement, it will send a signal to activate your audio video player, such as the SB Lite Audio Player or other media devices.

How Are They Fitted?

Large Wall/ Ceiling PIR	Small Panel PIR
The large version is a modified alarm style sensor which can be mounted onto a wall or on a ceiling.	The Small Panel PIR is a compact unit which can be hidden discretely behind a panel.

The AT 100 Audio Tour Guide is an easy to operate tour guide solution that will provide personal, interactive audio interpretation for museums, heritage and attraction sites.

How Does it Work?

As visitors walk around the site, they are able to activate audio messages by entering corresponding exhibit numbers then pressing the play button. Messages can be heard by either listening to the handset as you would a telephone, or through the two headphone sockets. Personal induction loops are also available for hearing aids.

Whilst listening, messages can be paused, volume altered and tracks skipped. Multi-language options are available and each handset is capable of holding just over 1000 minutes of high quality audio.

The programming and updating of the Audio Tour Guide can be performed by us, delivered to you ready for use or, if you prefer, we can supply you with the software necessary for the creation and updating of your own audio tours, through an easy to use drag and drop software interface.

How is it Fitted?

The Audio Tour Guide requires no fitting as they are stand alone units. The storage centre for the handsets also serves as a charging and programming dock and is available with either 10 or 50 slots.

From our state of the art studio, which includes a sound room for audio recording, we are able to storyboard, script and record using professional actors if desired.

What is Audio Donation Box?

Whenever a visitor puts a donation through the donation slot, be it coin or note, a message is delivered to the visitor via the built in, solid state playback unit. We feel that more attention can be drawn to donation boxes through the addition of sound, as well as an instant sense of reward and appreciation for a visitor’s contribution.

How Does it Work?

Behind the donation slot are sensors which detect when a donation has been made and will then play a message in response. The solid state playback unit can be programmed to play a single message, or up to eight messages randomly or consecutively. A useful delay option between messages prevents instant repetition of audio.

A built-in security system has been included which will activate if the unit is moved by an unauthorized person and a special backup battery ensures that the alarm remains active even when the donation box has been removed from mains power, deterring anyone who wishes to make away with donations.

If you already have a donation box installed, we may be able to provide you with the equipment and instructions to fit it yourself. Alternatively, we would be more than happy to design a customised donation box to your specifications ready for immediate use upon delivery.
