City – Look No Further Than Annenberg Pool for a Staycation

Ah, yes. I’d been wanting to go check out the Annenberg Pool for quite some time—beach adjacent in Santa Monica and just off the PCH—but hadn’t because I thought the whole reserving online thing sounded like a deal. Really, all it involved was making sure to be at my computer at 7am Wednesday morning to reserve for Saturday (you can reserve three days in advance), which is exactly what I did—two adults ($10/each) and a parking pass ($10) was $30. I wondered it it would be worth it, after all, I remember going to the public pool as a kid with a couple bucks in my hand with enough leftover for some sort of unhealthy snack to savor in between swimming and splish-splashing around. The answer is yes, a definitive, yes, it was worth it… (The pristine pool, lunch on the sand after the jump.)

Decors – Portola Paints and Glazes Makes Me Want a House for All Those Lovely Hues

A little while ago, I stopped by Portola Paints and Glazes at 8213 West 3rd Street (right next to Toast) to see what makes this paint shop different from say, Home Depot, when looking to refresh your interiors and exteriors. I’m not a homeowner and don’t have much experience in this area, but co-owner Casey Davis was there to educate me in his friendly, laid-back manner. First off, Portola is unique in that it creates custom colors all done by hand and eye (this is all computer automated at the chains): “A color might look different at 1pm than it does at 6pm,” Davis explains. “We account for that here”… (A look at Portola and more on the store after the jump.)

I have to say, I really like this house. I can imagine my mom telling me it’s “too modern” for her taste, but I really like the juxtaposition of the updated modern interior in a 1927-built Spanish home. Located at 118 North La Jolla Avenue, just south of Beverly, the three bedroom, 2.5 bath is 2,000 square feet on a 6,550 square-foot lot with a salt water pool and spa. Big plus in my book—I like the kitchen and the bathrooms (wonderfully tiled), which is unusual. This is definitely a dream home, however, with a hefty price and hefty price-per-square-foot… (More images and the price after the jump.)

Rose Apodaca is busy! Fresh off the heels of curating the fashion portion of PMCA’s Design Biennial and hosting the gr.dano LA debut at TenOverSix, Apodaca hosted a dinner at Calleen Cordero’s 7384 Beverly Boulevard boutique in celebration of Cordero’s participation in the Design Biennial and her new fall 2010 collection. A night filled with the designer’s daring studded leather shoes, and jeweled handbags and cuffs, plus melt-in-your-mouth black cod by star chef Nina Clemente (yes, above in the skinny jeans and heels!) made for a memorable and lush affair… (The dinner, the guests after the jump.)

On Sunset, where local artists are customizing the shoes, inspired by different parts of LA. Murgida explores different paths of life and their inherent truths about our society by entering professions ranging from busboy to locksmith to yoga teacher. I don’t remember the last time I went to Malo (4326 West Sunset Boulevard), which gave the husband and I ample reason to hit the Silver Lake spot with our 30% off via BlackboardEats. We sat upstairs for the first time, which was great—out of the fray and much quieter. I ordered the Oaxaca Shrimp ($12) that comes with plenty of sautéed shrimp in a pool of pasilla chile, chipotle and cream, which I happily sopped up with flour tortillas… (The meal after the jump.)
