The Linux-powered Nokia 770 Internet Tablet offers convenient Internet browsing and email through built-in WiFi, or via a Bluetooth connection to a compatible mobile phone. The device boasts a 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 pixel touch-screen, plus integrated WiFi, Bluetooth, and a reduced-size MMC (RS-MMC) card slot.

Although positioned as an "Internet tablet," the 770 has much wider applicability. Bundled software currently includes: web browser, email client, Internet radio, news reader, media players, image viewer, file manager, search, calculator, world clock, PDF-viewer, notes, sketch, and games. Additionally, a broad and growing range of software can be downloaded and installed onto the device from the 770's Maemo.org community website.

According to Ari Jaaksi, Nokia's director of open source software operations, the company conceived the 770 as a web tablet, rather than as a traditional PDA. As a result, the device is "more like a laptop than an embedded device," he said. "The goal was to get as close as possible to a PC experience. We probably couldn't have done this device two years ago, due to improvements in LCDs at this price point." Further insight into the 770 and it's Linux-based software, gained from a conversation with Jaaksi, is available here.

The 770 measures 5.5 x 3.1 x 0.7 inches and weighs 8.1 ounces. It's based on a 220 MHz Texas Instruments (TI) OMAP 1710, a dual-core SoC (system-on-chip) that combines an ARM926TEJ RISC processor core with a TI DSP (digital signal processor) core.

The Tablet is equipped with 64 MB of RAM memory. It lacks a hard drive, but has 64MB of free Flash space for user files, expandable through an RS-MMC slot. Battery life is approximately three hours of normal operation, according to Nokia.

Linux software and SDK

The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet runs an operating system called Nokia Internet Tablet 2005, which Nokia says is derived from Kernel.org Linux kernel 2.6 sources, a Debian filesystem, and other open source software. The user interface consists of the "Hildon" Gnome-based application framework, an on-screen keyboard, and handwriting recognition.

The growing list of application software freely downloadable for the 770 from Maemo.org currently includes ports of Abiword, GAIM (an instant messaging client), an ebook reader, and various games.

To support the developer and ISV communities, Nokia offers a complete source distribution and software development kit for the 770's Linux distribution, available as Debian source and binary packages, and as a 125MB download from Maemo.org.

Except for the hardware adaptation layer, certain user interface elements, and third-party software, the device is based entirely on open source software, according to the company.

The 770's open source software can be downloaded from Maemo.org as a complete filesystem, or managed as a collection of Debian source and binary packages. This enables enterprise developers and ISVs to easily create and test software for the device, Nokia says.

Nokia's VP of convergence products, Janne Jormalainen, said, "Linux and the Open Source development platform provide us with fast and efficient solutions to build products for this new Nokia product category."

"This is the first step in creating an Open Source product for broadband and Internet services," added Jormalainen. "We will be launching regular updates of the software. The next software release, planned for the first half of next year, will support more presence-based functionalities, such as VoIP and instant messaging."

Nokia officially unveiled the N800 Internet Tablet at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Jan. 8, and launched an N800 are on its US website.

Differences between N800 and 770 tablets

As had been anticipated, the N800 bears a high resemblance to its older sibling, the 770. Key changes include: addition of a VGA-resolution web cam; microphone moved to a more phone-friendly position; two full-size SD card slots, instead of a single RS-MMC slot; built-in stereo speakers, instead of a single speaker; scroll rocker for web page scrolling; redesigned top-mounted buttons and 5-way cursor pad; built-in stand; and a few mechanical tweaks.

One frequent complaint with the earlier 770 tablet was the device's limited internal memory capacity of 64MB RAM and 64MB available flash. The N800 ups the RAM to 128MB, and increases the flash memory to 256 MB (with around 80 MB reportedly occupied by the device's standard Linux software stack), according to Nokia's director of open source, Dr. Ari Jaaksi. Another significant change is that instead of the 770's single RS-MMC (reduce-sized MMC) slot, the N800 provides a pair of full-sized SD card slots, which Nokia says are usable with SD, MicroSD, MiniSD, MMC, and RS-MMC cards, in capacities up to 2GB. Cards such as RS-MMC require the use of a small adapter.

In addition to substantial memory increases (RAM and flash), the N800's processor speed has also been upgraded, according to Jaaksi. The N800 is based on a TI OMAP 2420 SoC (system-on-chip), rather than the 770's OMAP 1710. While he didn't specify the processor's clock rate, the N800's processor is rumored to be clocked at 320 MHz, as compared to the 770's 220 MHz. The resulting performance enhancement is sure to be appreciated.

The N800 measures 5.7 x 3.0 x 0.5 inches and weighs 7.3 ounces, as compared with 5.5 x 3.1 x 0.7 inches and 8.1 ounces for the 770. The 4.1-inch touchscreen display retains the much-praised 800 x 480 pixels resolution of the earlier model.

Despite changes to the hardware, the N800 has much in common, from a software perspective, with the 770. The N800's OS, meanwhile, is dubbed "Internet Tablet OS 2007 edition." Presumably an OS 2007 version for the 700 tablet will also be forthcoming.

In other news, a Nokia development team in Brazil recently created a nifty finger-driven music player for the 770 Internet tablet and likely the N800 also. The "Canola" application combines UPnP renderer and control point functionality, enabling it to transparently detect UPnP repositories such as consumer NAS devices, and then index and render/play their photo, music, and video resources.

Also, 802.11 specialist DeviceScape recently launched a software utility and service capable of automating WiFi logins at thousands of commercial hotspots.

Triple slider idea from Nokia ?

Two way slider, allowing to have both, numeric keypad and QWERTY keyboard in a mobile phone is nothing new these days.

Sony Ericsson and Nokia tried to patent their take on it recently. Some rumors say that Sony Ericsson P5i may actually feature one, and Samsung already has a two way slider in an officially announced, if not yet shipping, Samsung F520.

Still, the idea looks great on paper, and everyone is trying to come up with a way for this set-up to work as great in a real life too. Here’s another take on imagining a perfect dual slider by Nokia:

In a patent application called “A layered mobile device”, Nokia is actually thinking about a triple slider, with the display and keyboard/keypad “sandwiched” on one another.

The keypad part would slide in two directions just like on current Nokia N95, revealing numeric keypad on one side and music/game controls on another. Then, there would be another layer with QWERTY keyboard sliding sidewise underneath a the keypad.

Or, the layered set-up may even allow you to use both numeric keypad and QWERTY keyboard at once:

Although I doubt the utility of this particular design.

Still, looks interesting, but it’s just an idea and patent application. Let’s see if they’ll be able to come up with a real device for that. Nokia N99 perhaps?

Nokia N99 or Nokia N900 successor to N800 Internet Tablet pops up

Remember Nokia N99 phone of your dreams? You know, the one with Photoshopped picture and fantastic specs - 16 GB of internal flash memory, 16:9 3.2″ wide screen, GPS. Wi-Fi, 8 mpx camera and other goodies.

Well, when we almost convinced ourselves that this Nokia N99 was a work of overeager Nokia fan, along comes Engadget and drops this picture on us:

While Engadget says that this is the picture of the successor to Nokia N800 Internet tablet (Nokia N900?), it looks pretty similar to the original photoshop drawing of Nokia N99.

Looking at the live pictures of Nokia N99/N900 it seems that original picture could really have been made by some Nokia designer in the early stages of design concept for the new device.

The current pictures of Nokia N900/N99 device also seem to be an early prototype and do not reveal too many details about the new Nokia multimedia computer. Nokia N99/N900 will obviously have a full QWERTY keyboard and the camera with a flash is now built-in at the front of the device.

What’s interesting about this prototype of Nokia N900/N99 is the total absence of any controls on the front surface. Since it seems to be pretty inconvenient to use slider keyboard everytime you want to surf the net or listen to music, it may be an indication of significantly improved touch interface.

Still we don’t even know whether the pictures here are real and all the rest is a pure speculation on my part.

But Nokia has hinted that it is working on some new type of mobile device for next year. So if this one’s real, if Nokia will manage make a good touch interface and if Nokia N99/N900 comes anywhere near the originally indicated specs, it will give Apple’s iPhone, HTC Omni and any other future competitor a real run for the money.

Nokia N99 - Slider with QWERTY Keyboard and Numerical Keypad to boot?

Nokia N99 pictures and soaped-up specs may have been a fantasy and Photoshop skill show-off by some eager fan. But then again, it may have not.

Recent patent filing shows that Nokia is indeed working on a slider phone with QWERTY keyboard and numeracial keyboard:

As you can see, the sketch in patent application is very similar to the image of Nokia N99 we have seen earlier:

Could this really be Nokia N99?

To remind you, the claimed specs for it were:

9 way front joystick button, 16GB FLASH internal memory, up to 4GB mini SD slot, 16:9 3.2â€³ wide screen, GPS, MP3, DIVX XVID MPEG AVI video reading, WLAN WIFI, qwerty pad, 8MP camera, 3CCD 720 pixel wide 30fps video capture.

Sure, some of the specs, like 3CCD imaging system and amount of internal memory sounds pretty out there. But if you think of where the smart phones will be in a year or two, they are not that far fetched.

We already have 32GB NAND Drives, 10 megapixel camera in Samsung B600 and 800 x 320px screen in Nokia E90 Communicator. Why not put all of it into a one cool phone?

New Nokia 6 or 8 Megapixel Imaging Slider in the works?

It’s been a while now since Nokia came up with an interesting phone form factor innovation in an actual phone, instead of patent applications.

You know, something along the lines of Nokia 7380 “lipstick“, Nokia N92 TV phone or Nokia N93 Camcorder/imaging phone.

Well, it looks like we may soon have an interesting new slider among upcoming Nokia N-Series imaging phones.

In addition to ratateable camera, this new Nokia device also has a retractable flash assembly, which allows to hide/expose the phone flash within the body of the device.

And contrary to the other Nokia patent applications, the pictures in this one are not only a rough schematics, but include a rather detailed drawing of the phone itself.

Which may indicate that somewhere inside Nokia there actually is such a device already in the works,Â and we may see it announced, or at least leaked, pretty soon.

Also, and I’m not sure what to make of it, but if you enlarge Fig. 9 in the patent application, it looks like there’s a label saying 6 or 8 megapixel on the phone.

Nokia N78 is an upgrade to the existing Nokia N73, the new Nokia N78 uses Symbian S60 operating system, which is a standard operating system in other N-Series devices, making it a very capable handset with HSDPA, 3.5G and a 3.2 megapixel camera, aGPS and built-in WiFi.

Just like many other handsets where nokia has improved the GPS capabilities the Nokia N78 uses aGPS ( advanced GPS ) which delivers better navigation on foot. Another standard practice by Nokia in high end phones is the inclusion of geotagging of photographs and the new Nokia N78 also does that. It also has a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss lens and an LED flash.

It has dual-band HSDPA /WCDMA capability and quad-band GSM support, plus GPRS and EDGE data, has WiFi connectivity , stereo Bluetooth and USB 2.0, a multimedia player capable of handing MPEG-4, MP3, WMA and AAC clips. VGA video capture resolution resolution is 15 frames per second, it also has an FM radio and integrated stereo speakers. Another exciting feature is the FM transmitter which allows you to connect the N78 to a car stereo using just the radio.
