They decided to get rid of this pay phone cause it hadn’t worked in years…
And they wanted the extra wall space for more shelving…

After it had been installed YEARS ago…
No one came for support…
From what I can tell it’s not a machine
from one of the major telephone companies…
More than likely an independent service
that caters to individual businesses…
And the sales rep probably had a quota to fill
and thought nothing of it after…

When the owners decided they wanted to take it out…
I was like, “So what are you gonna do with it?”
“Throw it out. Why?”
“Cause to tell you the truth… I want it.”

Okay I know you’re thinking…
Why the hell do you want a broken down pay phone?
Answer: Nostalgia.

I remember pay phones littering the streets of New York…
Many in decrepit condition like this one…
Their receivers dangling like broken limbs signaling their demise
by disgruntled clients as a warning to those around,
stay away from this one…
The dangling receiver would flag
like a scarlet letter “A”.

But now…
With the advent of cell phones…
The idea of pay phones has become archaic…
The only time I have really seen anyone use them
has been in the subway systems…
And that may soon cease as well…
With the rumors and tidbits of info about cell phone signals
reaching into the bowels of Gotham.

The phone “booth” has ceased to exist…
Except for the select few…
And some just used for nostalgia reasons
And for refuge.
I predict the pay phone will soon follow suit.

So, I take pride in my new acquisition…
A slice of time…
An example of progress and technology stomping along…

I wonder if I can find one of those avocado colored…
rotary office phones in my travels…
It’s totally Mary Tyler Moore.
